5-0 out of 5 stars A quick read but slow to forget
This story, set in 1960's, concerns Ron, an affluent art collector who wears designer suits and is a world traveler; and Denver, a dangerous, illiterate drifter who left virtual slavery on a cotton farm in Louisiana. Denver's room in the slave shack is smaller than a closet in one of Ron's multiple houses. The heroine is Ron's wife, a lovely lady of faith and trust. Affluence does not jade her tender qualities. She fights a battle with cancer while they fight a battle of coming to a stronger faith and trust such as she possesses.
5-0 out of 5 stars Connect with purpose Anita Jefferson*Climb Every Obstacle*
This book is authentic in its language of spiritual love that was lived by Debbie and Ron Hall which was unpretentiously extended to those in need. It was sure providence that guided the Texas socialite Halls and homeless, illiterate, street-hard Denver Moore to mingle first at a soup kitchen but eventually around the family table.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book--a story about extending oneself for love and glorious transformations it brings
I could not put this book down. Because this is a true story, I hope to purchase many more copies to give to my friends so they too can be touched by the powerful story of transformations taken place in the heart of Ron, Debbie and Denver. It's wonderful to know that God is still moving in His powerful and mysterious way. I thank the authors for writing this book because i know it must have been a difficult book to write since the story deals with so much of their vulnerability and emotions. I believe this story will continue to change lives, bring hopes and stengthen faith in many others. This is an excellent and inspirational story about the glory of God revealed in these people's courage, love, faith and friendship. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Heart-Warming, Moving Account of the Holocaust
The story of Corrie ten Boom and her family and their work in the Dutch underground during World War II has been around 35 years but this is the first time I've sat down to read this amazing story.I am so glad I did!Built on the premise that love will conquer all, the story shows what relatively normal people can accomplish in extraordinary times.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Tale Of Love, Courage, And Compassion
In Corrie Ten Boom's book "The Hiding Place", she gives an exciting account of how during the terrifying years of the Holocaust and World War 11 her entire family strove to hide as many Jews as they could from Nazi forces.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Moving Tale
This is a beautiful, beautiful book. I could read it over and over, and feel touched, inspired, and renewed again. I first tried to read it when I was about twelve years old, but it was two heavy for me. Then I read it a few months ago, and it came alive. This is one book I would definately want to add to my library soon. I love the Ten Boom family - especially Betsy. I am looking forward to meeting them all in heaven someday. ... Read more

Editorial Review

World War II may have ended in 1945, but according to historian Tony Judt, the conflict's epilogue lasted for nearly the rest of the century. Calling 1945-1989 "an interim age," Judt examines what happened on each side of the Iron Curtain, with the West nervously inching forward while the East endured the "peace of the prison yard" until the fall of Communism in 1989 signaled their chance to progress. Though he proposes no grand, overarching theory of the postwar period, Judt's massive work covers the broad strokes as well as the fine details of the years 1945 to 2005. No one book (even at nearly a thousand pages) could fully encompass this complex period, but Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Turns a bright light on a dimly lit corner of recent history.
Postwar is truly a huge achievement. While it is a long book, it is actually short given how much ground Judt covers and how effectively he covers it.the book starts with a great synopsis of some under-stated facts and thoughts about the impact that WWII had on Europe as a whole and on its constituent parts. This book is worth reading for that synopsis alone.
4-0 out of 5 stars worthy, not perfect
I have just finished Mr.Judt's tome on modern Europe. I am a little embarrassed to admit that it took me several months. I enjoyed learning the information; the book is certainly filled with detail. It is not by any means an easy read or a "page turner, " however. Although I agree with some other reviewers that the US' role is deemphasized a bit, overall I felt the author was fairly objective. In contrast to a reviewer's comment that the French will love this book, I would argue that the author reveals the French during this periodas deeply flawed. Certainly the Soviet leadershipproperly receives a great deal of blame, as do many of the citizenry throughout Europe.I agree that the book's strength lies in the breadth of the information, which at first seems overwhelming but is kept semi-manageable. Mr. Judt is less successful in neatly synthesizing all the info, but I personally think that that is primarily a realistic function of the subject matter. I did find the epilogue discussing specifically the treatment of jews a little jarring in its placement.
5-0 out of 5 stars What is the future of Europe?
"Postwar - A history of Europe since 1945" by Tony Judt is the best book I have read on the subject. Its perspective on events since 1989 up to 2005 is remarkably good.

4-0 out of 5 stars A useful compendium of original source material
I obtained this volume of translations of Ancient Near Eastern texts and pictures along with its companionVolume I An Anthology of Texts and Pictures which was first published in 1958.This volume, which was published in 1975,includes translations of more recently discovered material selected from the 1969 anthologyof Supplementary Texts and Pictures Relating to the Old Testament.5-0 out of 5 stars A useful compendium of original source material
I bought this book along with its companion:Volume II A New Anthology of Texts and Pictures, because it was time for me to see for myself what the the original sources had to say about the Ancient Near East.4-0 out of 5 stars A Stimulating Resource
Volume II or "The Ancient Near East" is a good companion to Volume I, containing mythic, legal, and monumental information from the Middle East Bronze and Iron Ages. It really puts youback there to read actual letters and contracts, or to see the developments in poetic, narrative and visual arts. The only real problem is the lack of consistent dating infomation, particularly for the artwork. It makes it difficult to form a conceptual picture if things are presented in what appears to be a random order. ... Read more

I dont know how to rate this!! The book... I am yet to read! But I received collectorS edition within a collector edition! The book is printed upside down while the cover page is printed straight!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Life of Vladek
The combination of volume one and volume two of Maus instills emotion, unfelt by any Holocaust story.Spiegelman (hey that's me; so of coarse it's a must read) implements humor, details, and characters that allow for a stunning plot of the life of his father Vladek. The relationship between Mala and Vladek, is humorous and tragic at the same time. I don't want to reveal too much plot, but would like to end writing the animals characterizations of personalities is ingenious.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book

4-0 out of 5 stars The Hows & Whys of a Historical Tragedy
A lot of experts say that there are four periods in modern times that helped shape present-day China:World War II, the Civil War & rise of the Chinese Communist Party, the Great Leap Forward & resulting famine, and the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution.I'm not an expert, merely someone who's interested in History, but I tend to agree. This theory explains many things, including why true republicanism is coming so slowly to the People's Republic. But there is one further question everyone asks - How can something like the Cultural Revolution happen?

Editorial Review

A beloved classic since its initial publication in 1947, this vivid, insightful journal is a fitting memorial to the gifted Jewish teenager who died at Bergen-Belsen, Germany, in 1945. Born in 1929, Anne Frank received a blank diary on her 13th birthday, just weeks before she and her family went into hiding in Nazi-occupied Amsterdam. Her marvelously detailed, engagingly personal entries chronicle 25 trying months of claustrophobic, quarrelsome intimacy with her parents, sister, a second family, and a middle-aged dentist who has little tolerance for Anne's vivacity. The diary's universal appeal stems from its riveting blend of the grubby particulars of life during wartime (scant, bad food; shabby, outgrown clothes that can't be replaced; constant fear of discovery) and candid discussion of emotions familiar to every adolescent (everyone criticizes me, no one sees my real nature, when will I be loved?). Yet Frank was no ordinary teen: the later entries reveal a sense of compassion and a spiritual depth remarkable in a girl barely 15. Her death epitomizes the madness of the Holocaust, but for the millions who meet Anne through her diary, it is also a very individual loss. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars 'Anne Frank, better than ever'
'The Diary Of A Young Girl: The Definitive edition' is more or less the un-cut version of the book that was originally published in the late 1940's. it contains approx. 30% more material, and in my opinion makes Anne more relatable than ever, particularly to adolescents.

1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible
I thought this book would give me some new insight into biblical history. Its didn't. It is disjointed and much of it talks about one ruler or king or leader (none biblical) who died on such and such date in history. It gives little is any detailed information about anything pertaining to the bible. I thought that by reading this book I would have some new knowledge about biblical history but I have none. Its just a terrible book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding Historical Cross-Reference.
"Annals of the World" is a great historical reference for the most discerning of scholars.Covering the time from the beginning of creation to 70AD, James Usshur used over 2500 historical sources to ensure that he compiled a complete collection of historical facts.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Elbereth Giltoniel! - oh, sorry, wrong work..
I was so looking forward to this book! Thank you, Larry and Marion Pierce, for making one of the most important works of fiction available! Now, that Christopher Tolkien has given us the complete work of J.R.R. 5-0 out of 5 stars CLINTONS' MENTOR !
The late Prof. Carroll Quigley,of Georgetown University taught former President Bill Clinton ALL he knows-or so said Clinton at the 1992 Democratic convention.I've had this book for 30 years and its contents NEVER fail to amaze me.If yiu want to know the truth about the Cecil RHOADS sociey,Clinton was a member,or the anglophile Council on Foreign Relations(CFR),Bill was a menber of it too,READ THIS BOOK.Prof Quigley, who died in 1978,was an insiders' insider,he also had an influence on the late Sen. Joe McCarthy. The author of this review is very much a leftists.

1-0 out of 5 stars 1300 pages are too many
Quigley was a Georgetown professor who was permitted access for two years in the early 1960's to the private archives of the Committee on Foreign Relations, a Rockefeller internationalist organization that compliments the work of the Trilateral Commission and the Royal Institute of International Affairs.
4-0 out of 5 stars A fascinating perspective of history !!
Quigley has done an immense job writing the history of the world from the elitist point of view. The winner, the powerful, and the wealthy usually write the history. Biased or not, based on evidence or not, they write the history or pay someone to do it for them, either way, they make it reality and a basis for the future of the world. As a reader, you must understand the history and the context in which it was written, in order for you to comprehend the dangers of the present and to predict the urgency of the future.

4-0 out of 5 stars Zealotry With A Cause
David Mamet here displays the pugnaciousness of a Norman Mailer without the self-embellishing promotionalism.Speaking for myself, I do not need the names and behaviors of those Jews who fit the ideal type self-abnegator constructed by Mamet. They are to be found everywhere, including parts of my extended family and even in my own house. But, unlike Mamet, I don't think Jewish self-hatred is only repulsive. The true victims of Jewish ambivalence are the descendents of those Jews who internalize the self-mocking, Woody Allenesque gibes of their "wicked son" parents. They have squandered their own birthright and are too ignorant about its content and value to understand what they've lost. If anything, though he pulls no punches, Mamet does not make the case strongly enough. But for a solid opening salvo, I'd recommend this book to any disaffected Jew who doesn't at present understand the benefit of "showing up" to lead an obligated Judaic life and helping to make community.

5-0 out of 5 stars did I agree with it all?No, but it forced me to think....
As a gay Jew of Color, I often think about self-hatred.This society has taught me to not like myself for a number of reasons.Mamet forces me as Jew to look at how I have internalized these messages.Did I agree with his analysis all the time?No but I had to think....

1-0 out of 5 stars Reactionary ethnocentric nationalism from a "progressive"
Mamet is both a celebrated playwright and one of the most chauvinist and ethnocentric nationalists extant. If a traditional Catholic were to say about the pope and the Church what Mamet says about rabbis and the Synagogue in this book, he would be denounced as a reactionary bigot and hardly taken seriously. Instead, by some sleight of hand he may have picked up from his stage-magician pal Ricky Jay, Mamet's Judaic jingoism is transformed into a progressive appeal. To what? Blind faith in dogma and ideology as a path to salvation? Did anyone ever hear of the Enlightenment? Thank God for Pfefferkorn, Spinoza, Shahak, Chomsky, Kaye, Finkelstein and all the other "apostates" who had the courage and integrity to break free. Read this book as a case study in megalomania and paranoia from one of the grandees directing contemporary culture in America. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding - Helps One Appreciate What We Have in the U.S.!
Pomfret provides insight into China's Cultural Revolution through the eyes of his classmates at a Chinese university who participated. The result of youths gone wild, even abusing their own parents for trivial issues, is bone-chilling, almost otherwise unimaginable. We also learn of serious discrimination against females during that same time period.Everyone is encouraged/required to report on each other for any form of non-conformist behavior.
3-0 out of 5 stars Class Struggles
Not a bad book, but unworthy of the rave reviews given by many.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but a period piece only, and already dated
There's been something of a buzz going around the China blog world concerning this book, so I picked it up to see what the fuss was about. John Pomfret is one of the better China journalists, certainly light years beyond Nicholas Kristof, although his coverage never grabbed my attention like that of Patrick Tyler or Seth Faison. He definitely has the bona fides, however, having spent a couple of years as a student in the PRC almost immediately after it opened up to the West, and as a reporter in the country during the events of spring and summer in 1989.

THE PUNISHMENT OF VIRTUE: INSIDE AFGHANISTAN AFTER THE TALIBAN comes from an NPR reporter who arrived in Afghanistan in 2001, leaving reporting as the Taliban left to help rebuild the nation by heading a non-profit founded by the brother of President Hamid Karzai. Her reporting background, access to top players in the post-war government, and personal participation in the rebuilding of the nation makes for a powerful blend of insights.

There is a handful of books in which the paper, the words, the very physical medium dissolves in my hands, and I experience something quite other than reading.Chayes' "Punishment of Virtue" is one of them.Every evening, after work, I give myself over to a voice weaving together insight, keen intelligence, experience, courage, wit, and above all, an insatiable curiosity about the people around her and their history and culture.Whether confronting Afghan warlords to wrest stone from their grasp for the rebuilding of villagers' houses, or hunting for the treasure of obscure historical references toconnections between Kandahar and the Mongols, Chayes gives herself to the moment and to the task with joy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Poorly edited
This textbook is filled with misinformation, typos, and blatant grammatical errors. I hope professors stop requesting that students read this text. The only thing worse than the book is the compainion website. It has practice test questions that contradict the "real" test and quiz questions that they provide. If you take this course DL like I did, this really makes a big difference. I have spent the better half of the semester arguing for points from my professor (and winning) who apparently never bothered to read the tests or the text (I should get paid from him!!)
4-0 out of 5 stars Great for AP Euro!
I took AP Euro as a junior last year and actually really enjoyed this text. It was a lot better than the other book that had been used the previous year which was comprised almost completely of political history. The pictures are nice when you have a big chapter to read and the writing is simple to comprehend. The pitfalls of the book lie in the chapter on the French Revolution and it is obvioius that toward the end the deadline was coming up because numerous spelling errors and other typos were found throughout the final chapters. The formation of the E. U. and its development were almost not at all covered, but much of the material is excellent. In preparation for the AP test my class did not do very much in terms of information, but spent most of its time doing DBQ's and essays. I read the entire book cover to cover and did not even have to study for the AP test and recieved a five, so I highly reccomend this book but look somewhere else for the French Revolution or if you really want things structured in a strictly chronological formation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Overview of European History
I am a junior in an AP European History class. My class uses two textbooks, one of which is Kagan's Western Heritage. The Kagan textbook is by far my favorite of the two textbooks to read.It is very interesting and thoroughly covers all the topics of European history, many of which are skipped in my other textbook.I am even considering buying the book so I can read the chapters my class skipped and keep it on hand as a reference. The order of the chapters is not at all difficult to follow as long as the reader has a basic knowledge of European History or looks at the timelines at the beginning of each section. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in Europe. ... Read more
