5-0 out of 5 stars ANOTHER WONDERFUL WORK BY DURANT
Durant's popularization of history, which he continues with this wonderful volume, has been and indeed, still is poopooed by many an academic.I first learned of this years ago while taking a never ending series of history courses in college.Almost to the man and woman, they, the professors, would gave collective fits if a student brought the name of Durant to class and heaven help the sudent who used a "popular history writer" to class in the form of a reference on a paper.I knew then that I had to own and read these books.I did and do now and have not regreted it one bit.Popular history, i.e. history that most of us can actually read and learn from is a wonderful thing.Few of us grow up to be accademics and works such as these open many windows for we, the common person. I have been reading and rereading this series for years and have not regreted it one bit. This particular volume of course examines the French Revolution, it's results and those involved.Durant's style continues to come through and I promise you, you will learn much in a very enjoyable fashion.Recommend highly.
5-0 out of 5 stars Durant is one of the greatest polymaths of the 20th century
Will Durant, initially by himself and later with his wife Ariel, has written some of the most readable and interesting histories of the 20th or any other century.I found these books in the early 1980s and took five years to read them all.It was the greatest intellectual experience of my lifetime, and now I am selectively reading them again.(Fortunately I then had the habit of underlining passages I found most compelling and facinating, and this is saving me a lot of time in my rereading of the Durants.)And this is perhaps the most informative of the books, especially given our present day American obscession with evangelical Christanity.Rereading Durant makes me conscious of just how destructive have been the Christian schools that so many of our students have been subjected to since the mid 60s.I think that the Durants would call today, with the eager reelection of Geo. W. Bush and his merry men, The Age of Ignorance.Would that our students of today felt compelled to read the Durants.wfh

5-0 out of 5 stars What a superb series
I remember seeing these sets of books in my University Bookstore in College--never read them, but picked up the whole set for .25 each at a garage sale.Little did I know what I'd been missing.I also just startedteaching history in Calgary--a colleague agreed with me that they arefabulous, but said the snobby professors looked down on the Durants as"popularizers."I can't think of a higher compliment.Excellentfootnotes, with quotes from primary resources, all the marks of a hallmarkhistorian.I reading these books like steamy romance novels--and they area lot more fun.Durrant is not afraid to comment on the sexual mores/andmorality of the times. His judgments are pithy and well, history isriveting.I would have paid full price for these if I'd known how goodthey were! ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good info about "Real" Pitares
This book was good for quick bio's about "real" pirates. My nephew was excited about learning the history of pirates and this book did not disapoint him.

5-0 out of 5 stars A very well rounded review of pirate biographies
This book is heavy on the illustrations. That being said, it is NOT necessarily light on information.
5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful visual impact
Angus Konstam's HISTORY OF PIRATESuses works from the Mariners' Museum in Virginia to provide a powerful visual impact. Piracy from ancient to modern times is surveyed in a series of maps, images, and discussions that cover specific events, regions, and pirates. Plenty of historical and political background to the events place each in perspective and provide an excellent survey of mariner events of the times. There are other pirate histories on the market - but none with the commitment to visuals of HISTORY OF PIRATES.

Editorial Review

Histories of the American Revolution tend to start in 1763, the end of the Seven Year's War, a worldwide struggle for empire that pitted France against England in North America, Europe, and Asia. Fred Anderson, who teaches history at the University of Colorado, takes the story back a decade and explains the significance of the conflict in American history. Demonstrating that independence was not inevitable or even at first desired by the colonists, he shows how removal of the threat from France was essential before Americans could develop their own concepts of democratic government and defy their imperial British protectors. Of great interest is the importance of Native Americans in the conflict. Both the French and English had Indian allies; France's defeat ended a diplomatic system in which Indian nations, especially the 300-year-old Iroquois League, held the balance between the colonial powers. In a fast-paced narrative, Anderson moves with confidence and ease from the forests of Ohio and battlefields along the St. Lawrence to London's House of Commons and the palaces of Europe. He makes complex economic, social, and diplomatic patterns accessible and easy to understand. Using a vast body of research, he takes the time to paint the players as living personalities, from George III and George Washington to a host of supporting characters. The book's usefulness and clarity are enhanced by a hundred landscapes, portraits, maps, and charts taken from contemporary sources. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars So THAT'S how itall started!
Like most Americans, I barely remember anyone mentioning the French and Indian War when I was in school. The focus of American history classes seemed to jump from the Pilgrims straight into the Revolution. On the subject of 1776, I came away with the impression that a bunch of guys in wigs and tight pants were suddenly injected with some high-minded ideas from the likes of Locke and Rousseau, which inspired them to rise up and smite the British. Of course the real story isn't anywhere near as simple, and is far more interesting. We have university professor Fred Anderson to thank for putting together not only the most comprehensive treatment to date of the war that shaped America--arguably even more profoundly than the American Revolution--but also the most readable. The upshot was that France was more or less expelled from the continent, an event that allowed English speakers to spread their culture and ideas of government from sea to shining sea. This war, and other events of the period, also set into motion the events and circumstances that would lead to the American Revolution two decades later. Seeds were sewn here, including the beginnings of disillusionment with the British system of heretofore loyal British citizens like George Washington and Benjamin Franklin, as well as the insistence of King George and some equally bull-headed members of Parliament that the colonies should repay the Crown for helping them defeat the French. It sounds a bit dry in this abbreviated version, but Anderson does the wonderful trick of making it come alive through his lucid prose, vivid character sketches, and innate story-telling skills. He also puts the war and the period into their true context: the long-running struggle in Europe between the French and English, and all the tangled alliances that flowed therefrom. A brilliant British prime minister recognized that the America of the 1750s was but one more theatre of that struggle, and opened his country's treasury and reserves of manpower to ensure that Britain prevailed. The French, to their great detriment, understood the truth too late. France's return to the continent 20 years later to assist its former foes, including George Washington, in their struggle for independence was inspired not by any love of Americans or of independence, but by their desire for revenge against the English. It is all made clear here by Prof. Anderson in a compelling narrative that appears to be supported by liberal amounts of fresh scholarship, especially about the crucial role in the struggle of the American Indians.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very interesting but long.
Crucible of War is a history of the French and Indian War. For those who do not traditionally read history the book provides challanges in the level of detail presented. However it was well written, interesting and provided a excellent foundation for understanding the causes of The American Revolution and the development of a uniquely "American character".

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly informative

1-0 out of 5 stars Never Purchase this Book!
I had to buy this book for a history seminar in college, and let me tell you, it is a major waste of paper. The Author tries to cover every single event that happened in Europe, the Middle East, and Asia over a span of 134 years. In order to do this, most things are given a one or two sentence description. For example, in high school we learned about the Dreyfuss Affair, but Bayly only mentions that it occured. He expects that we can remember all of this stuff from our previous history classes.I suppose that this would be a good book for people who really enjoy history, but all it does is put my entire class to sleep whenever we have a reading assignment in it.In conclusion, your money would be better spent if you just set fire to it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Ho-hum, History is complex.
Why would you like this book? If you already knew a ton about history and were looking for new comparative methods of evaluating the modern world. There's certainly an interesting argument set forth by Bayly, but I remain unconvinced that his methods of documentation (reliance on secondary sources and a self-avowed lack of references) and his choice of material (severe neglect of certain portions of the world) should permit this book to be the academic blockbuster it has been claimed.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb
This is the best book I have read on the history of globalization. It is superb. It is well written. It is sweeping in its vision. And the scholarship that undergirds the book is remarkable. Bayly has read widely in disparate fields like African, Chinese, Mughal, and British history, nationalism, economic development, the state, military history, and globalization.

4-0 out of 5 stars The World of Columus and Sons vs. George Washington's World
The World Of Columbus and Sons was the first Foster book I've read. I really thought it interesting. George Washington's World is a much better book than The World Of Columus and Sons. Why? I can't explain. I'm not so intersted in Columbus as I am with Washington. Now, this book is really helping me (George Washington's World) since I'm in a middle of doing a research report on Martha Washington, George Washington's wife. George Washington's World talks quite a bit about Martha Washington so that really helps me.

5-0 out of 5 stars Learn to love history!
I must admit, when I was growing up, I hated American history above all else.In comparison with British history or world history, it seemed so boring...all facts and no fun.Well, this book will make you enjoy eatingyour cultural veggies.First of all, the authors took the trouble toinclude the trivial details about the "players" that make themhuman and interesting. Also, because of Ms. Foster's unique panoramicapproach to history, you are better able to understand the environment thatmade our heroes and villians what they became.Although this book isconsidered a children's book, I would not hesitate to recommend it toanyone over the age of 10 or so.The text will certainly not bore you, Ipromise! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars What We Know is What He Taught Us
It's odd that (as of this writing) David Brion Davis'"Problem of Slavery in the Age of Revoution" has no Amazon reviews.Granted that it is not young: my copy bears a puublication date of 1975, which is positively Jurassic in terms of current academic writing (there is a later edition). But that is, perhaps, the point it is Davis (in company with his sometimes Yale colleague, Vann Woodward) who taught us what we know about slavery-and if we know more than they did, it is because of what they taught us.Davis is what our professors read when they went to school-perhaps even more, our professors' professors. The giveaway is in the Amazon listing of books that cite this book.At this writing, there are 145: skim the list and you see a virtually comprehensive library of modern academic writing on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars A MASTERPIECE
It is quite dificult to find a History book who is well written and also makes you think about the subject. This is the main diference about Hobswamn. He makes you think, and Ibelieve this is the main aim for a Historian. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent
The author has, with this book, achived something great. He has managed to write about one of the most complex periods in European and World history in an acurate and detailed manner, whilst keeping it throughly readable. Why past reviews have attacked a lack of mention regarding the American Revolution escapes me. I would suggest that it is the French Revolution that warrents far greater attention due to its profound effects on political systems worldwide, and this book dose just that. For anybody interested in the transformation from absolutist to nationalist Europe, this is a mst read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Man of character, man of faith whose story should be proclaimed!
Chamerlain's heroism is similar to Teddy Roosevelt, Alvin York, and Audie Murphy who came behind him, but have been better publicized.
4-0 out of 5 stars Well rounded biography
I found Alice Trulock's biography on Joshua L. Chamberlain to be quite readable, well researched and well grounded. Considering the length of the book, Trulock's book read quite well for most readers of any level. Well, it may not be good as the one written by John Pullen but it definitely is superior to the one written by Edward Longacre. I put that in just for comparison purpose.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction...
One's opinion of the book "The War That Made America..." basically revolves around whether or not one liked the PBS series that forms the basis for the book.I liked the series and so I enjoyed the book on CD. Its a good example of accesible history...good scholarship but well-written and fast moving. The book on CD is well produced and well read. Anytime you try to cover sucha broad topic in "one sitting" you tend to gloss over certain details, but there is enough meat here to satisfy the casual history reader and inspire them to look formore. A very well done job.

5-0 out of 5 stars Prelude to the American Revolution
The author, Fred Anderson, having written a scholarly account of the French and Indian War in his book Crucible of War, in this book writes a shorter account of that war that was the North American component of Europe's Seven Years War. In the Prologue, the text states "....by sheer force of numbers, if nothing else, they would overwhelm the French who claimed that territory....Anglo-American mastery in North America was effectively determined before the first shot was fired." However, defeating the French in North America was no "push-over."
5-0 out of 5 stars A great introduction or revisit.
A concise overview of an event much less studied than that which it set the stage for - the American Revolution. Well written and informative, the subject matter is presented in a manner that makes the geopolitical motives, the roles of the various protagonists, and the momentum of the war extremely clear. Of particular interest is the role played by a young and inexperienced George Washington. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Beyond the voyages of Cook; examine the brushing of cultures
When an anthropologist writes history one expects a differant perspective. Still, I was stunned by the insight Ms. Salmond exhibited. Most surprising is how densely this book is filled with small, "throwaway" insights that reveal the nature of Georgian England, the impact of the Enlightenment and even the impact of a society, like our own, where the division of wealth has become so radical.
5-0 out of 5 stars spanning the cultural divide
Salmond's superb account of Cook's Pacific exploration tells the story from the perspectives of both Europeans and Polynesians. It places Cook as a 'player' in the islands' internal intrigues and power struggles, especially of the Maori and the Taihitians, while beautifully delineating the various and changing responses of their 'discovers' to the Pacific 'paradise'. Cook's portrayal is highly convincing, and the book assembles a brilliant argument for its conclusions about his violent end. Salmond's work is informed by an impressive anthropological knowledge, but it reads also as a sensitive exploration of personality and as a compelling adventure narrative. I have read a good many historical treatments of this material, and Salmond's work is among the best. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good history
Fewer things are better than a good sea story dealing with unexplored regions of the world. Captain James Cook's British Naval expeditions in the late 1700's were some of the last expeditions to the unexplored parts of the world. For introducing the subject and telling a good story, Thomas does an excellent job of introducing the reader to the inherent problems in leading a naval and scientific expedition and first contact with Pacific Islanders.
5-0 out of 5 stars The People on the Beach
Before reading this book, most of what I knew about Captain Cook was from high school (not much) and from a vacation or two in Hawaii complete with visits to historic sites.I saw it at the library and checked it out because I am enrolled in a "Pacific Islanders in the U.S." course at my local junior college, and because I'm planning another vacation in Hawaii and want to feel more grounded in the history of the place while I'm there.
4-0 out of 5 stars A good read, strange word choice at times.
The history, anthropology and sociology presented are well written at least 90% of the time.At other times the writer seems to get bogged down in making hindsighted judgments about certain situations and injects quite a bit of his personal thoughts... but hey it's his book and it's not sold as being a dry history book.It is all about Cook and the impact his expeditions had on the local islanders.

Editorial Review

Captain James Cook's three epic 18th-century explorations of the PacificOcean were the last of their kind, literally completing the map of the world.Yet despite his monumental discoveries, principally in the South Pacific, Cookthe man has remained an enigma. In retracing key legs of the circumnavigator'sjourney, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Tony Horwitz chronicles the culturaland environmental havoc wrought by the captain's opening of the unspoiledPacific to the West, as well as the alternately indifferent and passionatereactions Cook's name evokes during the writer's journeys through Polynesia,Australia, the Aleutians, and the explorer's native England. Horwitz skillfullyweaves a biography and travel narrative with warm humor that is natural and human-scale, and his restless inquisitiveness quickly infects the reader. Whilestriking dichotomies abound throughout that journey--Maori toughs who adopt Naziimagery to symbolize their own fight against white domination, millennia-oldPolynesian sexual mores that would shame the Reeperbahn, a sense thatChristianity decimated native cultures at least as effectively as Westernvenereal diseases did--few are more poignant than the ones that abound in Cook'sown life. This fine work is an adventurous reminder that answers to historicalriddles are elusive at best--and seldom as compelling as the myriad newquestions they pose. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars entertaining (3-1/2 stars)
This account of Captain James Cook's three voyages is juxtaposed with accounts of what the author encountered two and a half centuries later at venues on Cook's itinerary. The reader switches between Cook's history (upbringing, family, strengths, faults, patrons) and the author's humorous travel impressions.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great laid back, meandering read
Though the prose wanders a bit in places, one of the most entertaining travelogues I have read.Best read on a beach somewhere in the Pacific. The style is easygoing, but the author gets his point across.Read it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Looking for an easy-going but comprehensive chronicle of Cook's journeys?
During a round-the-world trip, I travelled to Australia, New Zealand, the Cook Islands, Tahiti, Bora Bora and Easter Island. I came across lots of places visited by Captain Cook or otherwise connected with him, as well as plenty of monuments with snippets of information about his journeys. I was interested to learn more, but at the same time wanted to avoid academic histories. This book was recommended by my guidebook, and it was perfect. Tony Horwitz combines a chronicle of Cook's journeys in the Pacific with his own experiences of modern-day travel in some of the same regions. It's light-hearted and entertaining, as well as being interesting and informative. It's travel literature, not a literary classic, but it's perfect if you're after an easy-going but comprehensive description of Cook's journeys. Definitely recommended.

3-0 out of 5 stars Warfare in the EIghteenth Century
I bought this book recently and just finished reading it. Although it has many nice pictures and maps that make it easy to follow things, I take issue with some of his focuses.
2-0 out of 5 stars Improper focus
The stated purpose of Cassell's History of Warfare series is to provide a richly illustrated survey of, well, the history of warfare. Series editor John Keegan has assembled a team of distinguished historians to write this history. For the eighteenth century, he has chosen Jeremy Black, who is known for his support of the 'Military Revolution' thesis.
3-0 out of 5 stars Warfare in the Eighteenth Century
Readers familiar with Jeremy Black's work will recognize Warfare in the Eighteenth Century as another solid effort by the author. This book is richly illustrated and has several good maps to help aid the book's presentation. However, if not for the many illustrations and maps, the book might barely be half as long as it is.Black does not really challenge the reader with new theories, in fact this is essentially a continuation of theories set for in his earlier work, European Warfare, 1660-1815.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Finally, a decent book on the Beau.
I give this book a strong rating for a couple of reasons.
3-0 out of 5 stars Narcissistic OCD Man-Glam
Whew! By the tale's end, the moral is pretty clear. And what a wild, awful ride it was.
5-0 out of 5 stars A racy and enlightening story of a famous public figure
BEAU BRUMMELL: THE ULTIMATE MAN OF STYLE comes from a biographer and actor who uses the memoirs, diaries and letters of Beau's friends as well as his own writings to provide an insider's look at the man who inspired the dandy. Despite his widespread fame, Brummell has not had his own serious biography until now: BEAU BRUMMELL delves into the man and his world, providing a racy and enlightening story of a famous public figure.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding book both on travel and on women
I am delighted to be able to "live" 18th century travel through the eyes of the woman that Dolan brings to life.I am especially glad not to be travelling like they did - airport security gates are a much aggravation as I can take.
5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent representation of the ambitions of 18th Century women
Brian Dolan has created a masterpiece of historical narrative, highlighting the trials and tribulations of being an 18th Century British woman with aspirations to anything OTHER than domesticity. The characters he, in many cases, rescues from obscurity are brought to brilliant life through their own words, and immediately upon finishing this book (which I read during a plane flight from Europe to California) I wanted to run out and read all I could find on Mary and Agnes Berry, Elizabeth Carter, Lady Webster, Cornelia Knight, Elizabeth Montagu, and especially the exploits of Helen Williams and Mary Wollstencraft during the French Revolution.I admire Mr. Dolan's blending of historic documents, correspondence and a spritely, slightly unobjective narrative to create a work of nonfiction that reads with the ease of a novel.I unreservedly recommend this to anyone who is a fan of the Georgian period or of the works for Katie Hickman or Venetia Murray.

4-0 out of 5 stars Illuminating lives of women travellers
Life in the eighteenth century for women was a strange mixture of education, enlightenment and restriction. The fact that some could travel so freely seems an anomaly given their general position in society legally - yet travel many did - and write about - they did too. Dolan has used mostly diaries and letters of female travellers for this large and well-researched book.Read more
