5-0 out of 5 stars Delgado and Stefancic do it again!
An excellent collection of essays and law review articles that explore the concept of "whiteness" and what it means in American Law. While the editors are well-known Critical Race Scholars, they also include essays by those who are critics of Critical Race Theory (notably Daniel Farber and Suzanne Sherry). A must have for anyone interested in the sociological implications and effects of race and/on the law. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nice book
This book is intresting because Flores was not an orginal member of the party, like some many of the biographies by former Panthers, he joined when they were already underway. He provied insight to the Panthers of the early to late 70s and what happened to the party during those years. He is honest and looks back at the actions with incredible thought and emotion which makes an excellent read and a great piece of Panther history. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE
I ENJOYED THE INFORMATION THAT WAS PROVIDED BECAUSE I DEFINITELY WAS NOT TAUGHT ANY OF THIS INFORMATION IN SCHOOL. IF YOU'RE AN AFRICAN AMERICAN, YOU SHOULD POSSESS ONE COPY OF THIS BOOK LIKE YOU MAY HAVE A BIBLE IN YOUR HOME. ALSO, MAYBE A LOT US US NEED TO START SEARCHING OUR FAMILY TREE.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great starter for facts about black history
Although Anderson unapologetically represents a black point of view throughout the book, his stories and mini facts are great gems of information.Critics who argue that the book is poorly researched becausethey claim Anderson cites has more than one figure for the number of blackswho fought in the Civil War are forgetting that some numbers represent thenumber of blacks fighting at a given point in the war--over all, his numberof 200,000 is the generally accepted number.Although he can be one-sided(I think he diminishes the suffering of Indians in some cases), the bookoverall is a must read and contains some little known dirtly little tidbitsabout American history.

3-0 out of 5 stars Not accurate, missing references to some important issues.
At first I was impressed with the book, the reading was quite easy. But then "facts" about the number of Afro-Americans serving in the Civil War were confusing. At least three different numbers were cited. Thedifferences in the numbers had a factor of three or more. That simplycannot be the case. Other inaccuracies appeared in the text which lead meto the impression that the book was researched by different people, maybestudents, I really don't know. From an intellectual point of view, thediscrepancies are glaring and leaves one the believe Claude Anderson'sefforts were disingenuous. If the author cited blacks as victims of theholocaust, then he should have cited references to support this notion. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Feminine Pride Shines in "Sugar in the Raw"
This small, paperback captures the emotional tales of young, African American girls from across the United States.Discussions of self-esteem, identity, racism, prejudice, and relationships permeate throughout Rebecca Carroll's book.Readers of all ages amd races come away with a profound understanding of what it means to be Black and female, but most importantly, the pride and strength that these young women carry within themselves in order to survive in America's society.Young girls of this culture will undoubtedly regard this book as a treasured resource since these humorous, personal and frank stories connect them to a sense of comaraderie, support and confidence.Carroll only reveals fifteen of fifty stories, which leaves you wanting and wondering about the rest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Coming of Age Stories
SUGAR IN THE RAW is an inspiring collection of essays written by 15 African American young women who, as the backcover asserts, "refuse to be ignored." 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for african-american girls

5-0 out of 5 stars One Blood:Confronting the Error of Racism
The legacy of evolutionary theory has been around for more than a century, and its destructive influence has continued to make advances, not only in our culture at large, but even in the church. If there has been any change at all, from evolution's inception to the present day, then it might be found in the way in which the church perceives and approaches this contest between evolutionism and creationism. In fact, in many ways the modern church has capitulated to several of the tenants of evolutionary theory without even comprehending that it has done so - and this needs to change. It is this very issue that is addressed in One Blood, The Biblical Answer to Racism, co-authored by Ken Ham, Dr. Carl Wieland & Dr. Don Batten.Their approach to this subject is quite simple: Racism is an invalid ideology because there is no such thing as multiple races. Instead, there is just one race and it is called the human race. Their assessment of this matter is fully developed in the book, but I would simply add here that the English word itself is often misused and misunderstood in our modern culture. According to the Oxford English Dictionary (full edition), the term race refers to "A group of persons, animals, or plants, connected by common descent or origin." Based upon that definition alone, it is better to assert that there is in fact just one race since we all have our "common descent or origin" from one man - Adam. The principle text that guides One Blood is found in Acts 17 where the Apostle Paul preached the Gospel in Athens:
1-0 out of 5 stars Say It Again... Make It Sound True.......
1.Racial genotypes are hardwired into DNA. The very divergence of racial types goes back too far to account for any of the kind of material presented here. The propogation of species types will continue until intermarriage so mixes the pool that you will have a basically homogenous pool. I doubt that we will ever see that. Asians will make asians. Whites will make whites. and the list goes on.......
5-0 out of 5 stars Respectfully presented, Well argued
The science, the timeline, all of it was well put together. Lined up clearly with the truth of Biblical history. Well done!

5-0 out of 5 stars Good book for intro courses on racial/ethnic relations
I strongly recommend this book to anyone who is teaching sociology or anthropology classes on racial and ethnic relations as one of the textbooks to use in class. This book introduces students to a wide variety of concepts and theoretical orientations that are or have been prominent in the sociology of racial inequality over the past 50 - 100 years, such as Park's race relations cycle, Gordon's assimilation theory, Hansen's three generation hypothesis, and Moynihan's "culture of poverty" paradigm.
5-0 out of 5 stars A good choice for my students!
Dr. Parrillo's prior works have been excellent; this book is a perfect fit for a class I developed, and teach, at UNLV:Racial and Ethnic Groups of the United States. With its concise sociological construction, its thoughtful analaysis of the powers of prejudice, and its exploration of dominant-minority relations in millennial America, it makes excellent and informative reading for my students. ... 2-0 out of 5 stars Wordy, Difficult to Understand
This book has an important message, but it is hidden in the extremely opaque, scientific and distractingly uninteresting writing style. In fact, I can honestly say I would not have had the patience to read past the first chapter without having been forced to finish it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good book, bad book
Lippi-Green has gathered together a large amount of linguistic material on accents as social markers and prestige symbols. That is the good part of the book. She is somewhat correct in her analysis of why some accents are high status and some are low status.Mostly, it has something to do with wealth and power. The accents of the wealthy and the powerful are seen as "more correct" than those of the poor and underpriviledged. This is true to a degree but does not tell the whole story. Accent prestige also comes about when the most educated and highly skilled (M.D.s, etc.)and not always wealthy or powerful (teachers, writers) speak in certain patterns. In some cases, accent prestige is simply a result of celebrities speaking in certain ways (this can be seen in the adoption by white middle class teenagers of the black dialect of rap stars who are often from backgrounds that can hardly be considered wealthy or powerful. In the last century, the actor David Garrick was also seen as a model of a "good" accent and set pronunciation standards for many people).Lippi-Green is a fan of social deconstructionist philosopher Michel Foucault and her analysis adheres to one cliche after another. Her dated victimology lessens the value of what would have been an excellent book. Dividing the world into victims and victimizers is simplistic. She labels every categorization that people make based on accents to be discrimination when sometimes it is nothing more than a convenient categorization with no social consequences. This process is universal and occurs even in those groups that Lippi-Green believes are being discriminated against because of their accents (ex: African-Americans are known to percieve the use of "double negatives" ("I don't need no food") by other African-Americans as a sign of being less educated and proper). I also know from my own inner city students how even the underpriviledged categorize each other according to how "ghetto" their speech is. Lippi-Green's use of the very tired and cliched language of oppression made my eyes glaze over in several spots.5-0 out of 5 stars Perfect for the linguist and non-linguist alike.
This book explores the many issues surrounding language ideology and discrimination in the United States through providing a thorough discussion and empirical examination of the subjective issues which so often permeate such a loaded topic. It is an excellent read for anyone who is seriously interested in either language or subordination or both. I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in Pluralistic perspectives in America. Well-written and comprehensive. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars come again?
This book and its various companion volumes are edited by Ivan van Sertima, a particularly extreme Afro-centrist. Now, I'm not against historians unearthing early (or late) African presences in Europe. Such a book could indeed be very illuminating. If no such books exist, Black scholars should write them. Or White scholars, for that matter.
5-0 out of 5 stars How Racists Never Want to Admit Africa Was Diverse
To the person who asked the simplistic question on why Europeans, during and after the slave trade, only found 'primitive' cultures with 'no technology' I say this:
5-0 out of 5 stars Mutatis mutandis
I've read this book along with Ancient and Modern Nigerians, and I think the sister did a great job. The last reviewer doesn't know what he is talking about and he needs to do his homework. Any true historian, which he is not, would know that Europeans were in Africa for a long period of time before slavery. Remember, it was Europeans (White people)who were the original White KNIGHTS of Africa!

5-0 out of 5 stars LBJ was the one who really freed the slaves
Just finished an outstanding book by Ira Katznelson on the untold history of racial inequality in America. Those who oppose affirmative action should get it and see who has really benefitted from The New Deal, the Fair Deal, Social Security and the GI Bill after WWII. I cannot see how anyone can read this book and not agree with me that Lincoln did not free the slaves. The slaves were not freed until 1964 and LBJ should be credited with that action.
5-0 out of 5 stars Rooseveltian politics and patricianism, Southern (and Midwestern) white racism, collude; OH, IGNORE THE TROLLS
For those who are either accidentally ignorant of -- or, more likely, willfully in denial about -- the dark side of the New Deal, many of these things have been documented before. James Loewen touches on a few of them in his well-written "Sundown Towns."
1-0 out of 5 stars Tell the Truth!
Without trying to engage in a polemic, it does need to be pointed out in reference to Mr. Matlock's review that the cause of truth would be better served if one avoids popular and media accounts and made the effort instead to access real historical data. The fact is that during the debate on the Declaration of Independence there was indeed a conflict over one of Jefferson's accusations against King George III that took His Majesty's government to task for its support of the slave trade. The issue of slavery itself was NOT seriously debated. Indeed in 1776, all thirteen states had slavery, while the New England and to a lesser extent the Middle States (New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania) based their economies in part upon the slave trade. It was on this basis that this particular point in the Declaration by Jefferson was omited. The Declaration, like the Constitution, was, therefore, in effect a pro-slavery document, which is not nearly as shocking as some would have it as the entire world at that time(with the small exception of a very few Western intellectuals and religious

5-0 out of 5 stars Issues just as important today as they were then.
Take one overwhelmingly male-centered and predominantly white society, add huge portions of power, racism, sexism, a misinformed public and gross displays of injustice, and you've got a recipe for the American way. This collection of essays written at the time of the Anita Hill/Clarence Thomas hearings holds every bit of relevance now as it did nine years ago. Highlighting earlier civil rights legal battles and connecting their influence to the hearings themselves, each essayist examines in progressive detail just how pervasive--indeed, how dangerously latent--racism and sexism are in our society. How the volatile and often avoided issue of race can blind the equally volative and often dismissed issue of sexism in any race.In these essays, we are given a shockingly clear image of the circus that was the mishandling of the hearings.Explosive, revealling, and thought-provoking, this book yanks the proverbial rose-colored glasses from our collective American conscience and dares us to think for ourselves. ... Book is a collection of narratives from perspectives of each diverse group. Not a joy to read, but not bad for a college text either. Personally I would much rather read short narratives than long and boring texts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nothing to add to any recipe
The southern recipes are accurate to a fault. This is authentic soul food cuisine.I have found that sometimes I have had to reduce some of the richer ingredients for a "healthier" meal. This is the first cook book I have used that you can just follow the recipe and you do not have to add a thing. The flavoring is just right!

4-0 out of 5 stars If you love southern food, you need this cookbook
I purchased this book years ago and recently misplaced it and just ordered another copy.I enjoy the recipes, the short stories... it's good reading and the recipes are very good.Brings back memories from the south.

5-0 out of 5 stars Don't miss this one!
This is an incredible cookbook! It is very warmly written, with descriptions of why each recipe is so special.Virtually all are treasured family favorites, which are clearly written so the reader can also achieve success.Family photos and bios are included (but pleasantly -- it definitely isn't overwhelming or in any way too much). This is a wonderful book to cook from -- and also wonderful to read.My one and only complaint is that it is no longer available in hardcover. However, any edition is a welcome addition to your home, or as a gift (and not just for African Americans -- I'm Caucasian, and absolutely love it). ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Valid points
After reading some of the reviews for this book, I was looking forward to reading it.
1-0 out of 5 stars Intresting but deeply lacking
This book is well horrible for what is claims to be trying to do. It was req. reading for my sociology class and let me just say, i have never hated reading so much before. Bonilla-Silva while presenting a intresting and no doubt helpfull view of racism in modern America, he is one sided and his claims are hypocritical to no end. By the end of the book i felt like i had read 182 pages of "all white people are racist becasue they want the benifits." There is no counter arguements and his sources are rather unconvincing since they are nothing more then like minded authors.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book!
As the author Bonilla-Silva emphasizes repeatedly, this book does not intend to blame whites for being racist. This books attempts to illustrate how whites and blacks are constructed and positioned differently in relation to the past history of slavery and the newer form of racial ideology which supports the white privilege in the age of color blindness. I couldn't agree more with many of the arguments he has made throughout the book. I think this can make a great textbook for college courses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worthwhile
African American Theatre: An Historical and Critical Analysis", by Samuel A. Hay, is a must for every theatre enthusiast who has long realized that general works on Theater History show an appalling lack in dealing with the contribution of the African American community to theatre (like so many other 'histories'!). The first two chapters of Hay's book provide a very dense history of African American theatre from 1898 to the present and correspond to the two major schools of African American theatre: the Black Experience School of Drama, and the Black Arts School of Drama, the first based on Alain Locke's philosophy, the second on the teachings of sociologist William E. B. DuBois. The classification of the two schools into periods, classes and subclasses gets very confusing very fast, but Hay provides a helpful outline of the divisions at the beginning of his book.I admit that Hay's system of classification presented a problem for me: I have never liked people putting everything into preconceived little boxes. This first part of the book is very informative, but also extremely dense. The last three chapters of Hay's book comprise the 'critical analysis' portion, which simultaneously works as a very passionate appeal to African American theatre enthusiasts/students to persevere and help keep African American theatre alive.5-0 out of 5 stars Definitely worthwhile

5-0 out of 5 stars An important work
Anyone who has travelled extenisvely in Africa is aware of the diversity of ethnic and tribal groups.Anyone who has then travelled or perhaps recalled their previous experience in the Americas is shocked to realize then that the African diaspora in the Americans must reflect this, or at least used to reflect this diversity in some way.
