5-0 out of 5 stars (very) good questions...
Having never really questioned the official account of 9/11 until recently (this fifth anniversary seems to generate a bit more buzz than usual) I was only curious to read what one of the most prominent 9/11 "alternative analysts" had to say. Well, after reading this, I am not sure what to believe anymore, but I sure know what to NOT believe: any single word of the official account.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding organization of salient anamolies
Griffin takes a very objective stance presenting engaging reasons for demanding further investigation into the 911 tragedies.

2-0 out of 5 stars A College Students Opinion
This book was used in my American History 1865 to the Present class. Basically we followed the textbook and started post-civil war. Anyway, I found this book to differ from most High School text books. High school textbooks are usually overflowing with detail, dates, names, etc. I remember reading them and wondering "What in the world is my teacher thinking? I'm never going to remember all of this!." However, I find after reading this book that I prefer those 600 paged hardcover books rather than this. The American People Volume II should never be used as the prime textbook in a history class. It's descriptions of events are very scarce and I have often found myself seeking other sources to find out what I am reading about. For example, there were about 3 pages describing the Native American conflicts in the late 1800's (Which was also turned into a SIX EPISODE mini series called Into the West. This shows how little is told about these conflicts in the book.) and there was a mentioning of a Dawe's Act. However, the text went to say what caused this act and what resulted from it (2 sentences each), but it did not say what it actually was. This has been the case for many other Acts, Bills, and Laws that are mentioned. This is also not a note-taking book. The descriptions of events are so slim and undetailed that there is nothing to note about them, and I find myself moving on in the reading and not remembering much. Therefore, I would have to conclude that I prefer those large high school history textbooks in comparison to this brief history. At least with the detailed books you can get more of a rounded picture in your head of what is being described, rather than just basic facts such as "Wheat was farmed in the Great Plains." One last comment: the text is also a bit juvenile. Each chapter begins with a story of a family or individual and it is as though you are reading Little House on the Prairie. So before you buy this, make sure that it is absolutly required. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Navy's Finest Hour
This was a wonderful book, shedding much light on the much maligned and neglected Tin Can Navy, these men past and present do much, more with so much less and all are a tribute to the resourcefulness of the Sailor, period. So much useful history that would pass untold if it were not for this book and others like it. The story was recalled in a very fond, but firm and affable presentation. I really enjoyed this book, and as a retired Tin Can Sailor, I can relate to much in this book. Honorable men commiting honorable deeds, for self, for shipmate and for country. I thank each of these men that served for thier history and sacrifice.

2-0 out of 5 stars Overly Opinionated
I'll admit that the official story of the events on September 11 are suspect. But that's all I will conclude. The way the story unfolds in the media and the explanations for it all appear to be hiding some evidence. Why? I don't know, and frankly, after reading the author's very slanted view of events, am even less interested to find out. I was interested in reading the facts and evidence that exist, but his whole book was one big conspiracy theory strung together by edited quotes and simplified facts. And his summary about not fighting the Axis of Good was just over the top. Maybe the truth would only hurt us more than we know. Call me naive and ignorant, but I would rather live my life with a "half full" mentality. I enjoy my life and the choices I am able to make in America and since I have not the power to change the unfortunate events of Sept 11, I'll continue to live my humble life and not waste any more time worrying, fearing, and doubting the catastrophic events of that day. What will that accomplish? What I will continue to do is pay respect and remember the 2,000+ lives that were lost - people I didn't know - but sons, daughters, wives, husbands, friends, moms, etc.

2-0 out of 5 stars Painfully Stupid
Eric Hufschmid believes that Bush and Cheney and the entire government were involved in a large conspiracy to take down the WTC towers and building 7, as well as the Pentagon and another target. To believe this one must not answer the "painful question" of "Is the government's story a cover-up?" but "Is our bumbling and stumbling government capable of pulling this off?"

The sins of child molesters, thieves and murderers pale in comparison to the crimes of the Bush family and the Democrats and Republicans who turned their heads on 9/11. 5-0 out of 5 stars An elegiac last call from the greatest American author
Kurt Vonnegut has his detractors, some of whom can be found reviewing this book, but thankfully he also has numerous fans -- and you can put me at the forefront of his supporters any day. In this work (which will most likely be the now eighty-four year old author's last) Vonnegut looks back at the life he has lived, the people he has met, those who have influenced him, the world he has inhabited, and reflects on where the human race seems to be headed. Surely there will be people who disagree with Vonnegut's politics, but what he is preaching (if anything) is the importance of kindness -- and, really, who could possibly find fault with that? He challenges his readers to stand up to the political machines, the corrupt corporations, et al and to hold on to their integrity in a world that no longer rewards honesty and hard work. Vonnegut certainly has no love for President Bush and the current administration -- which naturally provokes a knee-jerk defensive position from the conservatively inclined reader, but if you take the politics out of the equation you are left with what Vonnegut recommends to a man on page 107: "There's only one rule that I know of: Go****mn it, Joe, you've got to be kind!" Again, who could argue with that? Wouldn't the world be a better place -- and wouldn't life be a lot easier to live -- if we just made the modicum of effort that it takes to be nice to each other? Perhaps, being apolitical myself, it's easy for me to put aside my differences with Vonnegut and focus on what he is trying to say. There are also those who complain that Vonnegut is overly simplistic. Well, if I've learned anything it's that oftentimes the most obvious things are the hardest to see -- and if everyone already knew what Vonnegut is saying the world wouldn't need much fixing in the first place. Turkish author Orhan Pamuk just won the 2006 Nobel Prize in Literature, and I'm sure that he deserves it, but it just stupefies me that Vonnegut has never been honored with that prize during his long career. With a canon that includes "Mother Night" (my favorite Vonnegut book), "Slaughterhouse Five", "God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater", "Breakfast of Champions" and so much more he just seems like a great choice. And at eighty-four Vonnegut has lost none of his mental prowess and signature wit. If this elegiac work proves to be Vonnegut's last it would be a fitting, melancholy note to end his career on. I just can't help but selfishly hold onto the hope that he will be around a while longer to entertain us with his unique blend of comedy, tragedy, and poignant themes. God -- or whatever is out there -- bless you, Mr. Vonnegut.

3-0 out of 5 stars A master writer but not at his best
I have long been a fan of Kurt Vonnegut.Yes, he is a socialist and, yes, his writing is not balanced. He is espousing a point of view.Nothing is masked.I accept that and appreciate the wit and originality for what it is.He has written masterpieces of American literature and this is written as the words of an aging great man.
1-0 out of 5 stars ICONOCLASM TRUMPS TALENT
Not having read any of Vonnegut's work for 30 years, I opened A Man Without a Country and remembered why I'd SO assiduously avoided him. As a natural conservative I much enjoy the thrust and parry of lively political debate. But KV, like almost every socialist I've ever met, doesn't do debate, preferring mockery, innuendo, myth and wilfully distorted facts. It's the superior sneer of the self-styled intellectual who doesn't know what he's talking about. His unwavering belief in doctrinal socialism brings to mind a line from Emerson: "Foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds."

Pratt, Bruner, and Dickinson have produced a superb field guide completely covering all the islands of the tropical Pacific from Hawai'i west through Micronesia. This is a true field guide:it gives the field marks of everyspecies, notes problems in identification with special emphasis ondistinguishing similar species, and wastes no space on matters not relatedto identification.(The exception is that Pratt, a significantornithologist as well as an expert in identification, summarizescontroversies in classification whre appropriate.)Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A book to appreciate
What an exceptional book this is. I very much enjoy the outdoors--fishing, hunting, camping, and hiking for long stretches of time in the wildest places I can find. If you like similar activities, you may come to love this book as I do.
3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting
Flipping channels a couple of years ago, I came across a show on PBS about a man building his own cabin, with no power tools, in the Alaskan wilderness.I was mesmorized watching this program. It was one of those shows that stuck with my thoughts and emotions for several days.I was awestruck with some of the things he was making with his hands.I wanted to be there myself.Wanting to get more out of this, I bought the book.I would describe the book as interesting, not riveting. It held my interest and does inspire me to start and complete the task at hand, whatever that may be.To me, the description of the cabin building process was a little too tedious, but the rest of book seemed to flow right along.I'm glad I read the book, but I think this is one of those rare instances where I liked the video better than the book

3-0 out of 5 stars Easy read, inspirational story
This book is a good read for those who feel inspired by someone who follows their "dreams" (trite, but true!).The book reads like the subject is talking, simplified but descriptive. The Alaskan wilderness plays a big part in the story, although I would've thought that life on your own would have been slightly more difficult - the subject almost makes it seem easy. The idea of someone making a life on their own from nothing (building a house, obtaining food) is tempered somewhat by the fact that the subject had supplies flown in on a regular basis.Still, living on your own for 35+ years is an interesting topic.A nice addition to an "outdoor adventure" library. For those that have seen the companion video, this book may be less important. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful
This is simply one of the best NYC historical reference work available. The book is divided into periods and will display numerous maps , photos and drawings of the buildings and landscape of the city at that time in history. Plenty of history is included to make certain you are keyed in to the era, and how the buildings fit in. Just a beautiful book. Great binding and very sturdy.
3-0 out of 5 stars Almost Great
This book includes many really nice maps of early New York.Much of the historical information included in the maps is uniquely presented here and lacking in many other publications. However, there are many editorial mistakes and misspellings that I have observed, which makes me wonder about the accuracy of the rest of the information.Additionally, the narrative text is simple, limited and sometimes disjointed and difficult to follow.Buy this book simply for its beautiful graphics and depictions of the city as it used to be. Some periods of the city's history could be greatly expanded, especially the city's role in the revolution and the siege of Fort Washington. Anyone with knowledge of the city will find it of limited value beyond the maps and illustrations.A little polishing of this book and some additional material for some historical periods in a future edition would make this book an outstanding work. For now, I would call it good but lacking in important areas. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect concise history of the Cold War
This book is a masterpiece of what Gaddis once termed "lumping," or the search for overall themes and trends in history. The only negative thing that could possibly be said is that The Cold War is not an in-depth look at a conflict full of details to explore. But those who are reading this book for such an account are missing the point entirely.Gaddis explicitly set out to write a short, thematic, but still informative book on his area of expertise, and he has done so without fault.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thumbs up for The Cold War
A very concise view of the developments that lead up to and through the Cold War.It is a book designed for those of us interested in the period without a need for the depth that academics or professional historians would need.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent thematic overview of the Cold War -- does not pretend to be a comprehensive history
When reading a work of history, one should always read the author's preface. With luck, the author has done more than merely thank the dozens of vital souls who helped make the book possible but do not share in the royalties. The author will tell you the purpose behind the book's writing -- "this is the book I wanted to write."

4-0 out of 5 stars A Dream to Keep Alive
Though Ladon-Billings leans towards idealism constructing a perfect model of societal bliss, this book does show the underlying lack of knowledge many people have regarding educational issues. Those who say that the African-Americans' educational problems are their own fault show incredible short-sightedness to the truth of history. Have we forgotten that the Africa diaspora of colonialism was a forced migration to this country that treated blacks as inferior, and thus that it was a waste of time to educate them? In order for racism to stop, people have to recognize that there is no one race better than any other. All races have value and thus all races should be celebrated. God created them all. An understanding of this will lead to advances in the educational system which often has curricula that have no connection to many of its students. Ladson-Billings book, though primarily focused on African-Americans, is still an important blueprint toward removing some of the blinders people wear when it comes to historical truth. This book is for those who have ears to hear.

3-0 out of 5 stars The education problem is never a one race or one minority problem
Author Ladson-Billings (1994) book "The Dreamkeepers", gave me valuable inside on examples of various challenging and rigorous classrooms, and the emphasis the author put in presenting the cultural and social aspects of schooling when framing education as a whole, was evident. However the author makes the problems of African American children the main issue at stake in her book. Therefore I was presented with a fact and a different point of view based on statistics while conducting my research: One cannot lobby to change the system for one type of minority, to be successful at change. One has to see the "spreading tumor' per se, as a culturally diverse illness, affecting all of us. We, as a diverse society cannot try to make only one minority the beneficiary of our input, improvement, and educational reform. According the U.S. Department of Education (2004) NCLB (No child left behind) report, it showed that among the reading and math proficiency levels of performance for 4th graders in 2003, African American children were slightly lower, by one to five percent, under performing the Hispanics, meaning Hispanics proficiencies in reading and math are slightly better, just slightly, but this does not justify viewing the problem of minority children as being only an African American one. To be successful at change, one has to be more objective and start change for all minorities, why is it so vital to start with only one? I know poverty and lack of social skills are a major factor, but imagine how difficult it is to learn with a new language too.
4-0 out of 5 stars a useful book
The Dreamkeepers isn't a necessarily groundbreaking book, but i think white teachers (or any teachers for that matter) who haven't had much experience working with african american children will find the book helpful. If you've read any other stuff that falls under anti-racist or critical pedagogy, there won't be much that is new in terms of concepts. But what i found most useful are her sketches of the eight or so teachers who are very successful with african american children. She talks about their their upbringing, how that has influenced their teaching practices, and why they are successful in the classroom. ... This collection of short essays he published in an English paper (and meant for an English audience) seem to miss the mark for American readers. It's as if he published this because he needed money. There was nothing original in this book, nothing really funny and what few authentically funny parts there were seemd trite and at times exaggerated.

Not particularly interesting or funny. None of the ridiculous turns of language of a Dave Barry column, no elder-statesman crabbiness like Andy Rooney's. Just routine bitching about airlines, office supplies, and so on. Save it for "A Walk in the Woods" or "A Short History of Nearly Everything"

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, but Bryson can be preachy
Bryson has been one of my favorite authors for years now - the first thing of his that I read was a magazine article comparing American weather extremes with those in his beloved England. This collection of his writings on things American has me confused. Most of it, as his wife points out, is griping about this and that.Bryson has a tendency to talk down anything that doesn't fit into his view of how life ought to be and a maddening myopia when it comes to understanding why things are the way they are in this modern world.Balancing that though is his self-deprecating humor and his beautiful writing skills. There is a piece on global warming in this book that all ought to read. So, basically, even though he is preachy, and a bit gripy, he is laugh-out-loud funny and writes so very well that I will keep reading him. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "Sail on, sail on, sailor..."
Weighing in at a hefty five pounds plus and almost 1000 pages long, this book is as important to your boat as its keel, and almost as dense. First published by Nathaniel Bowditch in 1802 and carried on board every U.S. Navy vessel, THE AMERICAN PRACTICAL NAVIGATOR ("BOWDITCH") is the quintessential seafarer's reference.
4-0 out of 5 stars I know nothing
I bought this book for my brother who is in the Navy. He said it is required for them to have. He said it has been very helpful. Other then that, I know nothing else about this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A 'must' reference for any serious boater
The 2002 bicentennial edition of Bowditch's American Practical Navigator is a weighty tome prepared and published by the national Imagery and Mapping Agency in Maryland. Packed with international and foreign nautical charts, details on Logan navigation, discussions of navigation regulations and ocean chemistry and properties, and logarithm charts, The American Practical Navigator is a 'must' reference for any serious boater, and for libraries where boaters congregate. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars great insight
Imagine the U.S. was occupied by another country. Then, a third country, one that purports to value democracy and freedom, comes along to liberate us. We back them up and tolerate the installation of political cronies and corporate hacks in exchange for some kind of freedom. Then, this country, instead of installing a true democracy, installs a ruthless dictator and, if it is a democracy, is only a shadow one.And then the country continues this policy for 50 years, all the while claiming it supports freedom and democracy.
5-0 out of 5 stars Insights to Iran
This is a fine read; well written and quite enlightening. It should be required reading for high school history/economics students. Also, the subject leads to dynamic discussions for book clubs.
5-0 out of 5 stars Messing with other countries businesses
More than a interesting report of specifics of the doings of the English and American governments and corporations, this book shows that there are lessons in 1953 to be learned today about messing with other countries businesses.

5-0 out of 5 stars Important political speeches from 1761 through Lincoln's Second Inaugural
The Library of America does many great things by publishing books that keep important American literature, history, and poetry in print in fine and reliable editions. This volume collects important political speeches (not papers, pamphlets, editorials, or anything other than political speeches) from 1761 through Lincoln's second inaugural address.

4-0 out of 5 stars So You Thought You Knew Your History
This is one of the better college texts for American history. The information is straight forward compared to the full text version, and no information is missed between its big brother. The second half highlights from 1865 onward into the 21st century.I would highly reccomend this book for students taking a introductory course in college or AP American History in high school.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Overview!
This book gives a great overview of the social aspects of U.S. History since 1865.It was rather refreshing to read a history book that was not so narrowly focused on the death and carnage of war in this nation. The wars are discussed, of course, in relative detail, but more weight is placed on how they affected our nation's citizens and society as a whole. The photographs and illustrations were fantastic in revealing how life truly was at a time we often have a hard time imagining, let alone comprehending these days.In addition, I found it really helpful in learning the information and doing well on my exams!

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst History Book Of All
This has got to be the worst and boring history book of all. Throughout my entire years in school reading history book this has to be the worst. It gets so boring you can't even read it if you try. If you did read it, chances are you did not understand them 10 pages. Combining with a horrible professor and book it's going to be one long semester for me. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Quilts of Gee's Bend
This book is a testament to the ingenuity, tenacity, and faith of the women of Gee's Bend who, from their lives of deep poverty and hard scrabble living, still found the inner resources to create functional, yet strikingly original art.
5-0 out of 5 stars A BEAUTIFUL REMINDER
Not only did I purchase this book, I purchased one for a friend of mine who is a quilter. The quilts and the incredible stories behind them are powerful motivators for those who wish to accomplish anything, not just quilting. It is the triumph of the human spirit and proves that deep down, each of us has an indominable core.I am envious of the skill that these women posessed and of the oral history and cultural traditions which have been created and passed down. It's a reminder of the scope of human potential.

5-0 out of 5 stars great collection of American Art
I am an Alabama native. I have visited Gee's Bend, Alabama many times, but mainly to EAT!! They have more than pretty quilts in Gee's Bend. I have seen the quilts but because I love quilts and even tried unsuccessully to make one but, not being an expert, I guess I did not appreciate how popular the Gee's Bend quilts would become until I saw the story on CBS's Sunday Morning about the quilts being on display at the Whitney Museum in New York. The current quilters visited the opening at the museum and song those old gospel songs to their many fans.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thank You!
Thanks so much for this book about Jesse Jackson. Jesse Jackson is for himself. He has exploited Black people and used them for his own good. Where ever there is a cause he's present. Not so much for the sake of those involved, but more or less for his own benefit. It's ashame that he has to speak for the common good of man for a fee. Before he speaks he wants to come to a payment agreement. He uses Black people. A Black problem is his gain. Black people please get hip. Jesse Jackson is a pimp in the worse way. He pimps and profits from Black problems.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Book about a complete Fraud!
I've always had a thought about "REVERAND" Jackson, and this book proves it! Jesse jackson isn't black -He's just a white man that's so full of s**t tha his body long ago lost the ability to absorb it!

5-0 out of 5 stars Mr Jackson is what Fela Kuti would call a pen robber
If the Abacha/Nigeria/Abiola story revealed in this book is fact, Mr. Jackson should be jailed for the part he played in Abiola's death. Concerning the son, if a congressman earning $26,000 owns 5 cars worth $300,000 it proves the truism that the apple does not fall far from the tree.

5-0 out of 5 stars A treasury of complete American political speeches from Reconstruction to Bill Clinton
About a third of these speeches were delivered in my lifetime and I am pretty aware of most of the speeches included that were delivered during 1963 and later.Yes, I was young, but I was paying attention.I grew up with the echoes of WWII and Korea in my ears and the threat of nuclear war a part of the fabric of my life. The political speeches do not constitute everything that went into the crazy and tumultuous years that made up the sixties and seventies, but they were a reflection and were themselves an important portion of those times and events. The names if JFK, Bobby Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Malcom X, LBJ, Carter, and Reagan resonate well even today.
