4-0 out of 5 stars Good overall general reference
This book was a very colorful, nicely laid out reference for British Airborne and Glider troops in WW2. The book was an easy read and was grouped nicely. Many of the patches appeared to be repros, and several of the rarer unit patches were not present. This book is a must for the beginner, but lacks the in depth feel I was looking for, as an established insignia/uniform collector. With that said, I would still recommend this book to other militaria collectors.

4-0 out of 5 stars Nifty Volume
Terrific work is being done by David Gordon; as a fellow author in the SOLDAT/GI/TOMMY/CANUCK series, I must say Gordon's work is much superior to my own, including much more primary research and hands on with the actual uniforms and equipment. Some minor errors of fact are present, but readers must understand that the purpose of works like this is to get the community talking and discussing. Many items that were commonplace in 1944 are a mystery to us today; thanks to the efforts of authors like Gordon, the mysteries are slowly being unravelled.Good photography and clear descriptions overcome any weaknesses in research, which are minor.Recommended to airborne collectors in particular, and priced right for the general interest reader as well.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great attention to detail and excellent value for collectors
An excellent primer on the British airborne soldiers during WWII. I have an extensive library covering all aspects of the British military's involvement during the war years and together they don't cover this subject quite as well as Mr. Gordon has done. Definitely well worth the price for such a treasure trove of airborne information. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An authoritative look at Union Flags
Mr. Cannon has produced an excellent compilation of the flags used by the North during the US Civil War.I highly recommend it as a history and geography teacher. As an author myself I appreciate the style of presentation he uses in this book.I also recommend his companion book, "Flags of the Confederacy".

5-0 out of 5 stars The perfect book for a lover of Civil War history
I own both this book and the matching one on the Confederacy. Both of these books are incredibly informative and very interesting. The pictures in this book give you a prespective on life that the people lived in the1860's.If you have an interest in the Civil War I highly reccommend thisbook and the matching one on the Confederacy. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Photos alone are worth the money.
I decided to buy this book basing on the pictures of the knives inside.Once received, the pictures are worth more than the price I have paid for. Details with each knife is the extra bonus to the owner. Very good especially for custom knife collectors, and myself as a trader on ebay's -unclevit- listing store. I will buy more from this writer, perhaps every year. Recommend. Good Value. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A good book for gun appraisers and collectors alike
This book is pretty informative. It goes indepth into the history of individual firearms as well as giving a price range per respective condition. Only thing they don't tell you is that many standard military weapons are not included in this edition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fabulous book! Outsanding period photographs!
I am really impressed with this series from Schiffer publishing. I really like the organization of the British Army book and I hope there will be a second volume like there was for the Imperial German book! If you love the First World War then you will love this series. The reason I praise these books so much is because I have long been interested in this subject but, I had no photos to illustrate how the soldiers lived. Thanks to this series now I do! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Incredible pictures
I agree with the other reviewer, not much writing here. But this book is a HOME RUN with pictures - probably one of the best WW2 uniform books I've owned or seen. There is a tremendous amount of content, more than enough to justify its cost.

3-0 out of 5 stars Great photos, contextlacking
Color photographs of rare uniform items, associated insignia, and field equipment used in the Wehrmacht's tropical campaigns are outstanding. Moreover, the selection of period black-and-white photographs is exceptional - nearly all of them are unpublished and all should be of interest to both the historian and militaria collector. Unfortunately, a number of their accompanying captions contain errors or omissions, and often fail to provide context of a respective unit's operations in the North African or Mediterranean campaigns. I realize that this work is not intended to be an operational history or order-of-battle tabulation, but found that the lack of more background perspective was dissatisfying. I haven't yet seen the companion volume, which covers documents and paper items - perhaps it provides the historical framework that is lacking in Volume 1. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Reference Book, First-Class, Basic, Olive Green, Must Have
This book was like pulling my old army uniforms out from a duffle bag of memories.Using only black & white photos and line drawings to illustrate the volume, the author still successfully describes the variety of Army uniforms of the Vietnam era. Some data could have been presented in tabular form to avoid a lot of verbiage. The safety/work clothing & related equipment are very loosely definable as a uniform clothing item of a combat, fatigue or service dress nature. The listing of items by proper nomenclature was also very helpful. A real surprise for me was to see two in-country photos of two drill sergeants from my basic training company to illustrate the tropical hot weather (boonie) hat and the tropical rucksack. Some color would have been nice but there are other publications that complement this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Definitive Developmental Study
This is a book that will stand forever. Stanton was a serving officer in Vietnam and when he did his research he had access to the working files at the Army's Natick Laboratory in Masachusetts to consult. He has used all the specifications and drawings that were published. In combination with his work on the Cold War which covers clothing worn elsewhere in the world this period is thoroughly covered. His complete ouevre includes WW II, Korea, Cold War, and Vietnam. I wish he would continue with the Modern Volunteer Army from 1975 on. Bit sparse on field equipment but then this is a uniform study.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Info
I am trying to collect a good representation of the average soldier in Vietnam. This book has help greatly in see the uniform and equipment used. There are lots of picture and great descriptions. The book is wellorganized and very useful in my search. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Collection of hard-to-find and exquisite militaria in one great book!!!
This book is a great read-through for anyone who is interested in either militaria collecting or a general appreciation of the second world war. The one aspect of this books that sets it above the rest is its documentation of GI's taking these things back up, which is shown through several example photographs. I reccomend this book, yes the price may be high, but if you are interested in seeing amazing items like Hitler's famous "brown shirt", and a very large selection of other personalities, such as Goering, Himmler, and many others!!! 5-0 out of 5 stars A sword expert who actually understood swords!
Ewart Oakeshott was unsurpassed in his understanding of medieval swords. Unlike the majority of weapons curators who focus exclusively on the hilt and try their hardest to pretend that the sword was never a practical tool, he appreciated the whole sword. Oakeshott's typology is based on blade shape, i.e. on how the sword handles and what it can be used for. Because of this Ewart was loved by re-enactors and historical swordsmen who view swords as a beautifully designed tool that comes to life in their hands.

5-0 out of 5 stars A TOP REFERENCE BOOK ON FENCING!
This book is so full of useful information, you'll be using it for both references and entertainment. It hits on so many topics, I was amazed when I purchased my copy a few years ago. I don't believe there is another book quite like it on the market today. True, it is costly, but it brings together information you'd have to locate in fifty or a hundred separate books. And it is all served up in Nick Evangelista's highly readable style.1-0 out of 5 stars Not exactly...
What a glorious mess.Perhaps it was too ambitious an undertaking. 4-0 out of 5 stars Useful for SCA members
Very useful to Society for Creative Anachronism members. It will help give you background on the medieval history of sword fighting, and the associated cultural baggage. Also useful in that it has good coverage of Asian, especially Japanese, sword culture. In case you have a persona with a samurai background, say.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Definitive Study for its Period
This book covers more than just uniforms, it covers all the items carried or worn by the individual soldiers in this disease-ridden war. Congratulations to the author and the illustrator. This is a valuablecompendium, of a size larger than octavo so that the plates are clear, andwell constructed.I have been researching the U.S.arms, uniforms, andaccoutrements of this period for some forty years now. It takes much morethan a slew of pictures and a fewgee whizzy captions to impress me. Thiswork does--not only does it cover the details of the uniforms, it alsocovers the accoutrements and arms of the contending soldiers of bothnations. I can vouch for the accuracy of the U.S. portion of the book. Thedetail shown herein on the Spanish forces, as far as I know, has not beenreadily available in English at all. Though I have not pursued detailedresearch on Spanish arms, clothing, and accoutrements, I have kept my eyesout for published materials, and I have not seen it. As much of thenon-metallic materiel of this period was subject to hard usage in thefield, and because the U.S. soldiers' clothing and equipments were burnedfor sanitary purposes upon the troops' return home, the cloth and leatherof this period that actually saw service in campaign is extremely rare. What is now available is mostly web belts sold off as surplus and firearmsand edged weapons the same. ...
