5-0 out of 5 stars A Miracle to a Proud Family Past
All my life, I was aware that my father served in the "Mighty 8th as a navigator" aboard a B17. My father never talked much about his time in the service, though I heard just enough to peak my interest. I have looked through dozens of WWII books trying to find out more information to no avail. It was with this book, in just one hour of standing at the bookstore, leafing through the pages that I not only found out the Bomb Group and the Squadron in which my father served, but also the actual plane he navigated! There was even a picture of this bomber in action. This book is filled with 100's of pictures each with very specific captions. Each caption detailed the BG and squadron of each plane pictured, and in many cases the crew and the fate of both. There is also an excellent Index so it is quite easy to cross reference each picture with others that relate to like service elements. As an individual with no military background, I found that this book made for facinating reading for anyone interested in the"Flying Fortress" and the crews that flew then. More than any other WWII "B17" type books, this one put a human touch to the people who served in the "Mighty 8th" and gave enough "numbers" detail to allow for fact finding. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Awesome book
This is one of my favorite aviation books.4-0 out of 5 stars A good book
The book is a complete catalog of the X Plane developments over the years. What is a little distracting is the amount of treatment given to the aerospace vehicles that aren't "planes" at all, but merely had the "X" designation, so they ended up in this book. The more notable planes (XS-1, X-15, etc) were well documented.Overall, a good work.

5-0 out of 5 stars best x-planes book to date!
this books been a long time coming/overdue! if you like the experimental prototype aircraft that paves the way for production line aircraft, then this book is for you. mr miller does an excellent job telling this story beginning with chuck yeagers "sound barrier" bell x-1, to todays stealthy yf-22 rapter and x-45. has my favorite jet in it the north american yf-107a and x-15. us air force museum store highly recommends this book to me. well worth the money if your into aircraft and experimental aircraft from late 1940s to today. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Pictures
The reason I bought this book is because there was a picture of me holding my daughter in it.The picture was very clear and I wanted to keep it as a keep sake for her of her mom before leaving Iraq. She loves it.

2-0 out of 5 stars Operation: Publishing Coup
This could be a first: a 'history' of a war that's still being fought, thougtfully released before the end of 2003.Of course, the end of 'major' combat was announced in May 2003 (during the president's impressive photo op), so it's safe to declare the 'war' over and proceed with this coffee table book.
3-0 out of 5 stars Fine for a Picture Book
This book is consists almost entirely of pictures.Very litle is written about the men and women who fought and continue to fight this war. Also, although the 3rd Infantry division was the main effort during this campaign it seems like the Marines steal the show in this book. If you like pictures this is the book for you.I you want to read about the war you will be disappointed. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Technical Source But Not-So-Good History.
Right up front, I have to admit a bias in this review:I have been fascinated with the Mig-15 ever since I was a child growing up on Long Island (right between the Grumman and Republic aircraft factories--there were Panthers and Thunderjets buzzing my home daily) when Chicago-based Hawk Plastics issued the first plastic scale model of this fascinating little fighter in 1952.And that interest has continued to this day, so, having bought a number of previous AeroFax editions, I ordered this book as soon as I saw it.And it was money well-spent.For a paperback of this size and scope, it is one of the finest technical source materials of its kind.Replete with hundreds of photos not seen in the West before, many of which deal with one-of-a-kind experimental versions of the FAGOT, and pages of detailed line drawings and color profiles depicting most of the different versions and color schemes of Mig-15 service around the world, the book is indispensible in its depiction of how this important first-generation jet fighter was designed and built. The genesis of the Mig-15 involved considerable risk for its designers. In the mid-1940's, this was a giant leap for an aviation industry that had never before built an aircraft incorporating such new and untried aerodynamics as the swept main wing and high 'T' tail (so common on many current airliners today), borrowed Western engineering (its Rolls-Royce engine) and a whole new metallurgy. Mr. Gordon spares nothing in his description of how this was accomplished in less than three years, and, for historians, THIS is the real value of this book!If you want to know how this airplane came to be, this is the book for you! It's the finest I have seen so far on the Mig-15.5-0 out of 5 stars A "must" for military aviation buffs
In Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15: The Soviet Union's Long-Lived Korean War Fighter, Yefim Gordon provides the military aviation enthusiast with a comprehensive, profusely illustrated, descriptive history of a formidable fighting aircraft that was, in its time, a staple of the Soviet airforce. Schematics, historical photos, and a wealth of detailed aeronautical and design information is provided for all of the various versions and varieties of this combat aircraft. Mikoyan-Gurevich MiG-15 is a welcome and informative addition to any professional, and academic aviation history collection, and a "must" for military aviation buffs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Spitfire
A must have book for anyone interested in the smallest details, a great referance. This book contains so much information it will sure become your favorite!

4-0 out of 5 stars Lots of Data; Light on Organization.
I was really looking for a book with detailed data on the Spitfire. The good news is that there really is lots of data in this book. The bad news is that you pertty have to read the entire book to find things.3-0 out of 5 stars The best spitfire book, but.......
No doubt, this is the single most important book to own if you are interested in the history of the Spitfire and all its variants. But, it should be mentioned that this is a rather ugly book in the visual sense. The color illustrations are among the worst i have ever seen (artwork varies from terrible to good). An endless number of pages are dedicated to listing serial numbers and the printing quality of the b&w photos is poor. The text is interesting and offers so much more than most Spitfire books. If you buy this volume, i strongly suggest you also get a book like Spitfire:Flying Legend. This way, you will have the definitive text in one volume and great photos of numerous variants in another.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful and Interesting Study
The author has produced a slew of photo studies with incisive text on the life and times of the U.S. soldier, and his Spanish and Mexican californio predecessors also. His specialty is in gathering together contemporarysource material for the illustrations. This method has the great virtue ofshowing what was what and when. But if no photos are available, thensomething may be omitted. All of these books are vertical studies coveringa period of years. Though sometimes the illustrations serve to identifyindividual items of equipment, these works are not intended for thatpurpose. They are not catalogs intended for materiel collectors. They areof such a length and of such a level of detail that they will serve thepurposes of the general reader with a curiousity about what grandaddy didin WW II or great great great grandaddy in the Civil War and what he lookedlike and how he lived. This is not to say that the specialist such asmyself cannot find useful nuggets herein. I can. I use these for generalsurveys of periods I do not study in detail, such as the Civil War, and theWar With Mexico, etc. And to look up the odd facts. I have yet to bedisappointed with any of them. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars outstanding photojournalism
Moises Saman is a gifted photographer, and the work in this book demonstrates the unique way in which he sees the world-and the issues around him-and communicates that vision so profoundly to the viewer. Many photographers can produce adequate images, but none with the distinct style that separates Saman from the pack."This Is War" is not only a historic document of hostile environments around the world, but an often beautiful behind the scenes look into the changing lives of those who live there. For anyone interested in current issues, and how one photographer covers those (from Iraq and beyond) I highly recommend this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars So so
Run of the mill. The essays by Ryan and McAllester build up Saman's work to be of an exceptional nature. This I did not find to be true. The photography is gimmicky and leaves no lasting impressions made nor does it have much to say. More illustration than art.

1-0 out of 5 stars No substance
This book attempts to show the horrors of war, but instead shows the very shallow insights of the photographer. Not the greatest photography either. I recommend books by James Nachtwey or some Magnum photographers. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A must have for any battleship fan
I purchased this book for two reasons.First, I make models of ships. This book is an invaluable reference manual. The detail will actually go into the internal layout of the ship.Crew cabins and sleeping area will show up on the details. The very excellent plans of the ship are worth $30 to $40 dollars at any shop that sells ship plans. That is worth the price of the book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Detailed Description- Limited analysis
The book can be broken into three parts, the first is relatively brief and gives the background to how the ship came about, its costs, major issues etc.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very unusal book that you don't expect to find
In a nutshell this book is detailed blueprints for the HMS Dreadnought. There is a small amount of text at the beginning, as well as unusually in depth statistical details such as how much the ship cost to be built as well.

A nice little book on the women auxilieries of the allied fighting forces of WWII. Excellent companion to world war two allied nursing services by the same author.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Basic Resource
If you are looking for basic information and colorful pictures of many of the women's military uniforms during WWII, this book fits the bill. Most of the primary women's services are covered, with the highlights of each. You will need to buy the companion to this book if you are looking for WWII Allied Nursing Services, however. An excellent resource for basic research, and children's education of women's roles during WWII. 5-0 out of 5 stars At Last!
I first saw a collection of these justifiably famous plates - alas, only in black and white - over 30 years ago and was at once struck by the great dramatic style, artistry and accuracy of the subjects portrayed. Anyone who has travelled in Russia will at once recognize the style of the wooden houses which can still be found there today. The author has captured the scale, drama and pathos of this historic campaign in a singularly effective and immediate manner, almost with the character of a modern war correspondent`s camera. The text sets the locations for all the pictures and is an invaluable adjunct to them. This book is a show-stopper. Greenhill are to be congratulated for publishing this work and making such rare witnesses to history available to a wide public. Jonathan North is also to be congratulated for his efforts in his handling of the translation of the text. It was worth waiting all this time to have the chance to acquire such an important historical document. Well done again! Digby Smith.
