5-0 out of 5 stars Good, basic submarine book.
If you're looking for a thorough design history, try Norman Friedman's book. If you want nice photos and drawings of all the major boats from before WW I to present this is your book. It's easy to read, has enoughdetail for all but the techno-geeks like me and is reasonably priced. Thereare a few missed details and errors, but by-and-large it's great. Niceeffort. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Every WWII unit deserves a "Bando"
Quite simply as my review title indicates, every Division or unit that served in the Normandy campaign, deserves an author of Mark's calibre.I am a working tour guide of the D-Day battlefields, and I wish that every unit was covered in the same incredible detail as Mark Bando covers the 101st Airborne in his books. If you want to really get "under the skin" of a WWII combat divsion and hear true and verified stories of young men in combat, then this book is a must have. The only danger is that after reading this author's books, works by other authors on other units will seem dull and lifeless in comparison.
5-0 out of 5 stars My Uncle Manny Gesulga
When my uncle past away last year, my aunt showed me the 101st Airborne in Normandy, a book by Mark Bando. In the section on combat experiences, the first soldier profiled was my uncle Manny Gesulga.Manny was part of the 101st paratroop drop behind enemy lines at Normandy and his combat exploits read like something out of a GI Joe comic book. After living his harrowing experiences in Normandy, he went to fight in Operation Market Garden (wounded by sharpnel) and the Battle of the Bulge (wounded by sniper fire) and came out to live a full, productive life.He never mentioned his role in WWII but I am glad Mr. Bando gave credence to him and other heroes of the 101st.This book is a must read for all history buffs and really brings home the sense of duty and committment to freedom that is the legacy of the young men of America.

5-0 out of 5 stars Retired Detroit Cop Writes WWII Tour de Force
Mark Bando, the author of this exposition of the bigger-than-life adventures of the fabled 101st Airborne "Screaming Eagles" at Normandy, is an old acquaintance and comrade from the Detroit Police Department. We spent time together years ago as writers for our police patrolmen's union newspaper, the Tuebor. We have happily renewed our acquaintance of late, and while I remember Mark as an astute and accomplished writer, my less-than-passionate interest in military affairs had, until recently, kept me from reading this fine book. Now that I have finally done so, I deeply regret that I waited so long.

2-0 out of 5 stars small photos, poorly printed
while flipping through this book i kept getting this eerie three-ring binder feeling.something about this book feels cheesy and self-published, and its not just the chapter heading fonts.for one, being that this book is supposed to be about the photographs as well as the sory, i found the paper unsuitable for printing photos.as well, though there are quite a number, they are all small and poorly printed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificant Collection of Photographs
This book is a magnificant collection of photographs. There is just enough writing to explain what the photographs show. Combined they make a pretty good history of the United States involvement in World War I.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great aviation art book with detailed info of planes
This is a great aviation art book with some big plusses. In addition to the paintings, there is a detailed analysis of 6 of the most celebrated airplanes of World War II. 5-0 out of 5 stars Different artists interpret some of your favorite planes
The text is entertaining. The art is wonderful. The writer did a very good job pulling all of this together. One of the few books of this type to actually address some of the different "how tos" in executing aviation subjects in art.The book is done very well.Leaves you wishing for a sequel.J. 5-0 out of 5 stars German Artillery of World War One by Herbert Jager
An excellent book!Herr Jager fills in an important area missing in the field of Artillery. His work on the known and many lesser known and rare pieces of Germany Artillery before and during WWI does justice on the subject that should please almost everone even Ian Hogg.He has included many rare photos of field guns and other equipment that I have never seen in books in the United States. The book has descriptions of each piece and almost all pieces of artillery described has at least one photo to accompany it.The book is easy to read and follow and should be included in anyone's collection on Artillery. The only mistake I found was the misidentification of one photo on page 205 which should read 15cm Kanon 16 by Krupp. If you are interested in Artillery then this is a must have book for your collection. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful visual presentation of arms and armaments
German Armored Warfare Of World War II: The Unpublished Photographs 1939-1945 by military historian Ian Baxter is an impressive and authoritative survey enhanced with many previously unpublished black-and-white photographs of World War II German armor, soldiers, and battles. Descriptive captions enrich the photographs with historical facts and reference information of the events portrayed. A powerful visual presentation of arms and armaments, German Armored Warfare Of World War II is a core addition to any personal reading list, as well as professional and academic World War II Military Studies reference collections.

3-0 out of 5 stars Some interesting photos, but poor quality text
This book has potential but is marred by an inexplicable number of errors.I found myself unable to enjoy the text without discovering page after page of misidentifications (i.e.: Panzer IVs labeled as Panzer IIIs, Marder IIs labeled as Marder IIIs, etc., etc.).Scenes from Africa are misidentified as "..on the Eastern Front..."Some of the vehicles are not only mislabeled, but are also put into a context that is chronologically impossible (i.e.: Panzer IV Ausf. Js during Operation Citadel).I simply cannot fathom how an author can place such facts into print without doing a minimal amount of research. Also, the author has a habit of speculating about what is happening in the photographs, to the extent that I almost expected to read what the crew was thinking when the photo was snapped. Most of this is obviously pure conjecture, and rings hollow when coupled with the factual errors that are evident. The layout of the book had promise, with different chapters devoted to main battle tanks, light tanks, reconnaissance vehicles, etc.But I was disappointed to find that the chapters do not even come close to being comprehensive in scope. For example, the reconnaissance chapter has over twenty photos of motorcycle dispatch riders, but very little coverage of the various models of armored cars used throughout the conflict. Some of the photos are of dubious quality and/or informational value, and others have been seen before in other publications (not generally a problem, but the book is subtitled "the unpublished photographs").The book earned three stars from me because I am an avid armor fan and modeler, and am always looking for new photos of interest.I guess it's because of guys like me that books like this keep getting turned out.I just wish that the people responsible would take the time to check their facts and strive for a little more quality. If the errors don't bother you and you're a WWII armor junkie, then buy this book.If you don't own "The Encyclopedia of German Tanks of World War Two," just make sure you buy that first.Actually, you should browse lots of other titles first... ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational
To say the least, this book motivates me, to become a better and more driven photographer. After reading this, i went on to look more into each of the PJ's whose work is featured in the book...One of the best photography books i've owned/read, ever.I'd fully reccomend it to any aspiring PJ out there that wants to know what the future may hold for them.

5-0 out of 5 stars The second-best present I was ever given
Shooting Under Fire is an amazing collection of photographs from 10 living combat correspondants (except for one who died while photographing the 9/11 attacks). The color images are stunning in their graphic portrayal of the horrors of war, and the black and white images are intense and gritty in their truth.3-0 out of 5 stars Talented Artists - Great Images - Awful Prose
The photographs in this book are ... well ... amazing. Most of the most famous war photographs are included in this collection, and you will seen some, if not all of them before. But, it's nice to have them all together. Most of the captioning alongside the images shows that the photograhers are self-centered, egotistical social misfits (like most great artists) with an incredible eye for light and composition. ... Great source of pictures of mamelukes for those interested. As always, this series always outshines the Osprey books in my opinion. More pictures, more concise text.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good for the photos and captions
Not the first book I would open on the Battle of the Bulge, as it is not comprehensive and a bit unbalanced. It's really a picture book, and in that respect, is worthwhile. The captions are more descriptive (and apparently accurate) than in many books. For example, the photos in a series taken by German battlefield photographers are shown to have been largely staged immediately after combat to re-enact the fighting- interesting. These photos show up in other books without that context mentioned. Those interested in the Malmedy trial will find the photos in that section noteworthy.Worth a look but not a classic for the collection unless you're really focused on the Battle of the Bulge.

4-0 out of 5 stars Photographic History of the Battle
This is a coffee table sized collection of photographs of the persons and events of the Battle of the Bulge.Although it does contain a text with information about commanders, weapons, and the overall course of the battle, the book is mainly interested in describing what is happening in its numerous photos.Of particular interest are the photos made by the Germans. The German photographers paid close attention to the large numbers of stunned American POWs, wrecked and abandoned American vehicles, and the corpses of fallen GIs.It's a different perspective from the usual pictures of advancing and victorious Americans. Also of note is that this book finally lays to rest one of the biggest inaccuracies of the photographic record of the war- proving that the famous picture of cigar chewing SS trooper next to the Malmedy sign is NOT infamous SS Lt. Col. Jochen Peiper.

5-0 out of 5 stars America's Costliest Battle
The losses of American soldiers was the greatest in US military history. With all of the attention of D-Day this may be the forgotten battle of WW2in Europe. The authors take us to the sights of this most gruesome andcostly battle. It was at the BULGE that Hitler and Company made their laststand to protect the FATHERLAND. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars It doesn't get any better than this!
This book, Waffen-SS Uniforms: In Colour Photographs is, without a doubt, a MUST HAVE for any WWII library! Although one of the earlier reviewers stated that the uniforms were mostly reproductions, he is wrong, as pretty much everything in this book is real! You won't get this kind of great colour photos in any book this cheaply -- if you don't buy it, you're an idiot!

5-0 out of 5 stars My favorite SS reference.
As an artist, finding color WWII reference material is quite tricky, and usually limited to color plates done by other artists! This is just top shelf to me! -A real visual treat. The pictures are large and in very sharp focus allowing for good appreciation of detail and color, and there is a wide spectrum of mini-eras represented. There are several other german WWII color photo books out there, but none can boast the sheer number of Waffen-SS variations depicted here.Buy it right now, for one day you will look back with disbelief when you think you ever debated about adding this to your collection. -It's that good!

4-0 out of 5 stars A photographic reference
A reference in matter of picture and colour photography. Most of the description are too succinct. In a roughly 66 pages and over a hundred photography, you get a good view of some parts of the Waffen-SS uniforms. Dont expect specific Waffen-SS portion to be exploited. Photographic reference only, but for a reference ..., it's a pleasent book to look at and at this price it's a perfect book to add in a collection...Read more

A very well put together piece of work. well worth the expense of purchasing and reading, for those interested in this type of action and history of the WW II Air War. I did.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding book
Ihave the good fortune to know someone who flew with Mr. Glen, who wrote this book. I have read the book over and over. It makes you feel as though you are right there in the cockpit with them, which is something I have dreamed about doing since I was a child. These men truly were a breed apart. This book is time well invested for the Thunderbolt enthusiast.

5-0 out of 5 stars P47PilotsThe Fighter Bomber Boys
Tom Glenn tells an exceptional story exceptionally well. Glenn brings you into his cockpit and his muddy tent. There you can inhale the horrifying, glorifying experiences of these air warriors. In their Thunderbolts, thefighter bomber pilots soar beyond incredible and dive to the brink ofimpossible. The book is insightful, riveting and an eye-opener. If you onlyhave room for one book in your current time/money budget--pick this one. Sadly, the missions, the contributions, the victories (& the staggeringcasualty rate) of the fighter bomber pilot is barely mentioned or omittedentirely from most WWII chronicles. My thanks to Tom Glenn for not lettingthis bit of history disappear and to he and his fellow pilots who riskedall for us. ... A great buy for people trying to understand the fighting order of the Hospitaller. It details the castles they possessed during the crusades and their battles against the islamic knigdoms. The book itself starts with the foundation of the order in 1080 and then goes on to explain their tactics and strategies in holding on to their claims in Jerusalem. In the begining of the book is a detailed layout of the timeline of the order and like all other osprey books it contains 10 well drawn and fully colored pages of the equipment and dress of the Knights.Read more
