3-0 out of 5 stars A sell for "The Coldest War"
As a previous reviewer I thought that Brady's book would be more of a focus on the DMZ and perhaps show some insight into "the scariest place."I did enjoy his war time reminiscences but that wasn't why I purchased his book.I didn't particularly care for his 'how he belatedly was awarded the Bronze Star,' and chumming around with colonels and generals at galas and such as it sounded like 'how great I am after all.'Oh, and by the way, Senator Chafee was my CO.I got tired of Mr. Brady selling his earlier pub,"The Marines of Autumn" (which is a fine read) but in particular I did not like him pimping (perhaps a bit too strong) his "The Coldest War."There are sections of the book where he cites this book seemingly every other page. After awhile I started to feel a bit sorry for Mr. Brady which is too bad as I'm sure that he was a fine officer for his Marines of Dog Company. It's an ok book for what it is but it really isn't about "the scariest place."

2-0 out of 5 stars Reunion with Combat
The Scariest Place in the World by James Brady. Published by St. Martin's Press 11 April 2006. Paperback. ISBN 0312332432.
4-0 out of 5 stars A warm look back at a cold and scary place
Man... Talk about crabby... Everyone else who's reviewed this book so far here don't seem to be impressed. But I always enjoy James Brady's writing and this book was no exception. It's a memoir, of course. The underlying theme of the book is the march of time and how one looks back at -- or in this case, returns to -- a specific geographic place where youthful impressions were made, ideals died or changed... Where a young, unsure Marine officer discovered he did, in fact, have what it took to lead Marines in combat.

5-0 out of 5 stars Cold Hard, Mean and True
You have a choice with this book. You can read it like an adventure story and be stunned by the thrilling story or you can read it like the true account it is of a horrible war. It is a stunning book. It is a must read. Forget the movies read this book. This author deserves a Pulitzer Prize for his account of Korea. He also deserves a medal.

4-0 out of 5 stars Amazing tale, modest writing
As far as heroism goes Joe Owen and the men he served with are 5 stars plus. What they went through was so amazing that the story was an easy to read page turner and we are forever beholden to the sacrifices they made.I have read other first person narratives that I thought were better for writing craft but this is a book I would recommend for the close up view of this historical moment in Marine history.

5-0 out of 5 stars RECOMMEND THIS ONE TO YOUR COLLECTION
Excellent read for those interested in this particular conflict. The author is quite discriptive in his narration. He is able, somewhat, to give the "feel" of the circumstances..if that is even vaguely possible through the written word. The author has a tallent for enabling the reader to actually visualize the situation...sometimes rather difficult to accomplishe when addressing military movement on the battlefield.Again, I recommend you add this one to your collection.I makes a very nice reference book along with being a very good read. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars If you read only one book this year make it, About Face.
I read About Face several years ago now.It is a long read and you will find yourself emursed in the life of this man we come to know as Hack.I emailed this man several times and he always responded back.He has sinced died and America has lost a son. This book is the best read ever if you have a patriotic bone in you don't miss it.
5-0 out of 5 stars As a soldier, Hack is my hero
Hack told it like it is. We had a batallion commander like him a couple of years ago. If you read the Book "Heavy Metal" Then you would know who it is. In this book hack always had the soldiers by his side. Something officers in todays army dont have. He always knew how to work the system for the benefit of his men. Something today few officers or nco's are willing to do. As a soldier this is my leadership handbook. If civilians want to know how the army works today read this book. Eventhough this book is based on the 50', 60' and 70's I still find officers and nco's today doing what they did 30 to 40 years ago. Once you read this book your outlook on the Army will change. RIP Hack!

5-0 out of 5 stars A Real American Hero
If you like books about war, then this may become one of your favorites. Don't expect a flowery tale of heroism though. Col. Hackworth is not telling this tale to build his own legend. His interest is in telling the truth and in preserving the memory of Korea and Vietnam, two wars that many people don't know much about. Although he eventually became a full Colonel, Hackworth began his career as an enlisted man, and his book often looks at war from the view of a man on the ground. Overall, this book is an enthralling read, and it has about it that feeling of truth that separates it from many other war books I have read. ... Read more

Excellent book. Well written, easily read, thought provoking. Is long, but not cumbersome. 5-0 out of 5 stars should be required reading for all seving military leaders
I first came to hear of ABOUT FACE from a friend and fellow NCO in Korea. He said I might think it was good,Was that an understatement. I read About Face in one fourteen hour plane ride back to Korea. I've read itthree more times so far and recommend it to all my friends deserving thetitle Non-Commisioned Officer. I truly believe that all military leadersshould read this and take from it; Hack's wisdom and experiance dealingwith the military, Integrity and soldiering.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Great Man, A Great Book, A Great Read
I bought this book when I was about 11 years old and a big fan of "war stories".I am now approaching twenty and have read this book at least once a year since first purchasing it, to the extent that it is now in three parts and the photographs have fallen out. This book is an intense, gripping, readable but most of all honest and believable account of one of America's greatest warriors and his experiences...from the forested slopes of Trieste in 1946 to being chased around Washington DC by Army Intell goons in 1971, this book, while entertaining, will also teach you everything you need to know about duty, honour, bravery and honest patriotism, qualities that come hard to find in the era of Iran-Contra, Tailhook, Whitewater and the like... This book will make you laugh, cry and think. Please, read it. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A powerful look at Marines at war in Korea
In "The Coldest War: A Memoir of Korea," author James Brady vividly describes what it was like to be a junior officer in the Marine Corps during the Korean War.Brady notes the irony of his decision to sign up for a Marine Corps officer training program: "I'd joined up to dodge the draft and ended up being sent to war."He gives many insights into the positions he held: platoon leader, company executive officer, and battalion intelligence officer. His narrative also illuminates the culture and organization of the U.S. Marine Corps.
5-0 out of 5 stars A two night read an well worth it
I do not know James Brady and hae no connection to him. I know him mostly from his good writing in Crain's New York Business. His Memoir of Korea was simply a great and compelling read. It was like being in front of a fire with a vintage port wine, a Cuban cigar and a friend who finally decides to tell you his story. That the friend is a master racounteur (sp?) helps and that James Brady has one hell of story to tell also helps. Thanks Mr. Brady. Here's to you and your buddies who sacrificed so much. May all your nights be warm.

5-0 out of 5 stars 5 Stars.
My criteria for a book is simple. The writing has to be good: This one is well-written. A book has to capture my attention: This one does that. And a good book should never break-the-spell with crude interruptions...like gross factual errors, improbable-implausible action, and gross incongruence in the traits of the character's. There are no "What in hell was that all about?" moments in this book. Brady's experience in Korea is similar to my Vietnam experience, and it's similar to other recollections of Korea. But the bottom-line is: Is this book a "keeper" for the library? It is. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Russ book makes valuable contribution
to the universe of memoirs that came out of the Korean War but like many similar books the reader is forced to wade through lots of personal rememberances and vague references to encounters with various women to find the interesting parts about serving as a combat infantryman. Perhaps a re-editing of the book to about 100 pages would help. Also I would his 'hipster' 50s style tone rather grating.

4-0 out of 5 stars Truman's Folly
Russ hits the nail on the head when it comes to the boredom and then instant terror of war.The smells, sounds and foolishness of what we went through is already being glossed over by the liberal revisionists of our history.I was there, a good 11 months before Russ, and we had just come from Chosin and 1st Mar Div units were sectoring to the west.God (and a Navy Corpsman) kept me alive to at least read this narrative and comment on it.From where Russ begins his story he is right on, as scores of Marines I've talked to who were there in '52-'53 corroborate his view.We lost as many dead and wounded during his period as the Inchon to Seoul to the Yalu and back to Pusan period. As the "notebook" diary he kept was a no-no, at least he can quote times and places that I have long since refused to remember.A must-read book, along with Brady's "The Coldest War" narrated from an officer's perspective. Both books tell it as it was.In case anybody wants to store a trivia fact,4-0 out of 5 stars War in a Very Cold Place
This is the third first-person account of the Korean War I have reviewed here during the last year (the others were James Brady, The Coldest War : A Memoir of Korea, review date May 27, 2000, and James R. Owen, Colder Than Hell : A Marine Rifle Company at Chosin Reservoir. review date December 8, 2000), and I have enjoyed all three. No war is pretty, but the Korean War was especially ugly: Most of the fighting took place over cold and barren ground from World War I-style trenches; the enemy, North Koreans and Chinese, was tough and relentless; and the conflict ended in a cruel stalemate that essentially persists to this day.The author of this memoir, Corporal (later Sergeant) Martin Russ describes Seoul, the capital of South Korea, as "a huge trash heap," and the countryside as "a frozen patchwork of fields and rice paddies." 5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the Finest American Memoir of the First World War
Hervey Allen's memoir is certainly one of the finest personal narratives of World War One, and perhaps the best American memoir of that war.In my opinion, it is a neglected classic. The narrative covers his unit's march from the area around Chateau Thierry in July 1918 to the Fismes/Fismette area in August. The book begins with Allen's unit on an almost bucolic road march through unspoiled French countryside, and ends with its virtual decimation in Fismette. As the title suggests, the closer Allen and his comrades get to Fismette, the more intense the action, until they are literally facing the fire of a German flamenwerfer attack. The story ends abruptly; in a preface to the second edition, Allen compares the ending to a filmstrip burning out suddenly.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good read but maps would be helpful
The first impression this book made upon me was consistent with'forgotten war' nature of this bitter conflict: the book has yet to be checked out of my university library, despite 4 years onthe shelves.Rishell was a white Lieutenant assigned to the BlackPlatoon of AbleCompany, 24th IP. Like many Korean War bookswritten by soldiers on theground, it covers the year from thebeginning of the conflict to May 1951,when the stalemate beganto emerge. 5-0 out of 5 stars A Comrade in Arms
I was shipped to Korea as a rifleman and assigned to the 24th Infantry Regiment's 2nd Battalion, G-Company, 1st Platoon, 1st Squad. where I was to serve from Dec.4 1950 until Sept. 1st, 1951. The regiment originally knownas the BuffaloSoldiers, and can truely state that it was one of the mostoutstanding combat units in the Korean War.4-0 out of 5 stars War from an infratryman's point of view.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gritty and tough, told only the way Hack could
Hack did not mince words about what it was to be a leader, he led by example. With gritty humor and straight talk he shows us that leaders do not demand respect - they earn it.And when they earn it, people follow and succeed. A good leader shows those he leads how to be their best and gives them the support and tools to achieve it. That was Hack, and only he can tell it like this.

5-0 out of 5 stars I read this book twice
Fans of Band of Brothers, Fans of Platoon, Fans of Saving Private Ryan will love this book. Its an easy read, and its something you will enjoy.

This book takes you into the war and lets you experience first hand what those who were fighting in the war experience in the war each day. It takes you through the guerrilla warfare that was used and how men were fighting over in this horrible war died. This book will really makes you think about how bad war really is and that its not a joyous thing to have to fight in a war. This is what Steel My Soldiers' Hearts is about.

4-0 out of 5 stars Content makes up for writing
It's clear that the author is a doctor and not a writer. The book cries out for editing; writing errors and organizational issues permeate the book. That said, after I got about halfway through these things stopped bothering me.The story made up for it.The reality of the MASH is much more interesting than what's portrayed on the screen. It gave me a new respect for military medicine. If you can make it through the starting chapters it's a great read.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Tribute to the M. A. S. H. Units in Korea.
Dr. Appell's book "M. A. S. H.: An Army Surgeon in Korea" is an excellent tribute to the men and women of the Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals by a veteran surgeon of the 8076TH M . A. S. H. unit. My only complaint is that the book was not a little longer. For any fan of the movie or t. v. series this book is a must-read. Dr. Appell (who was a consultant for the series), tells us what life was really like in a M. A. S. H. unit. The series took some liberties with actual events, but its overall portrayal was fairly accurate-though the series lasted 10 years compared to the three years of the Korean War itself, and the average length of stay for surgeons in a M. A. S. H. was about 8 months. Dr. Appell has written a very interesting book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
This book is not about the T.V. show M*A*S*H. But the tv show did get many of its episodes from this book. From arterial transplants to make shift clamps these Doctors opened many new doors to the medical world. Chapter 6 "In the O.R." is pretty gruesome. Details of intestinal wounds abdominal wounds and pretty much everything a war could destroy on a body. Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Interesting Collection of Essays; Poor job by the Editor
There are parts of this book which are engaging reading, but for the most part it is a set of sterile-if painful-renditions of the lives of 16 POWs in North Korean prison camps from 1950 thru their release under operations Little and Big Switch. Mr. Spiller edited this book, leaving the personal accounts largely untouched. However, his editing leaves much to be desired. Consider Donald Elliot: he joined the Army on Nov. 25, 1950, but there are references to `his unit' being in action as early as August 19th, 1950 in Pusan. Even worse is Daniel Johnson's story. There are references to the Pusan Perimeter Battles...in February, 1951?? It is possible that Johnson might be confusing the several Chinese offensives of early 1951 with the steady attack by the NKPA the previous summer; but even so, for Spiller not to correct these misconceptions is ridiculous and detracts from the rest of the book. Spiller could also have more effectively and uniformly summarized the pre-war pre-enlistment experiences of his subjects. 5-0 out of 5 stars Military Magazine, August 2000
I recommend the book to any serious reader of the Korean War.To hearfrom the mouths of these men of the hell they went through at the hands oftheir captors.

5-0 out of 5 stars A story long un-told
In the world of foreign military advisors, Ben Malcom's name is not a household word in comparison to Joe Stilwell, John Glubb, Edward Lansdale, and, of course, T E Lawrence. His short memoir of life with North Korean guerrillas during the Korean War deserves to be read along with those of his more famous colleages.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Book -- 40+Years in Coming
(Note:Part of the details furnished here are based on my discussions with the author shortly after White Tigers was originally released)3-0 out of 5 stars Cloak and dagger in the Korean conflict
This is an interesting addition to the military history collection. The book is an account ofindigent intelligence gathering and sabotage operations behind the lines in North Korea. A few U.S. Army Officers and Enlisted men were tabbed as advisors to assist North Korean nationals in the disruption of the Communist forces north of the DMZ. For the most part well written, the narrative is most worthy by demonstrating the reluctance, if not downright obstructionism shown by senior Army members toward unconventional warfare in this period. The young officers selected for the mission generally had little if any training or background for the job and were given minimal support. A good accounting of the initiative and ingenuity of our young college grads when thrown in a difficult position. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Korea Between the Wars: A Soldier's Story
My interest in this book is based on my personal experience.I was a military dependent at Camp Hillenmyer, Kunsan, Korea from 1947 to 1948.I was 6 years old when I arrived at the Camp with my mother and brother. My brother and I were two of the first children to arrive, and our number grew to only a total of eight. We ate our meals with the soldiers, visited the villages with our Korean servants, were schooled in a one-room facility using the Calvert system.I was able to identify the second house where we lived from one of the photos of the Camp.I tried unsuccessfully to contact the author by E-mail.Ann Strader, Pittsburgh PA.

4-0 out of 5 stars Depressing, but it pulls no punches
A depressing book. Both because the conditions that the author described in Korea between the wars were so miserable, and because after a little while his writing style starts to drag you down. There's no doubting the authenticity of the material though, right there in the text he included letters he sent home at the time... still, only for a serious reader of this era, as nothing "historic" really took place in this time/place. At least, nothing that the author witnessed.

5-0 out of 5 stars Retired Air Force officer, Kunsan City, South Korea
This book is of great value in the sense that it is a piece of living history.I've lived here in Kunsan for a few years and this book really enlightened me about a few things. The dirt road to Kunsan is now afour-lane highway; the levee he describes in the book is still there; thedependent housing he built used to be the old ROKAF NCO houses (nowdeserted); and the base roads are basically the same routes as in 1947. Yes, things change, but at the same time they remain the same.I loved thebook. Thanks, Fred. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very good read
My cousin was a Marine from Indiana, who was killed at the Chosin Resevoir battle. It was very easy reading and interesting.

5-0 out of 5 stars A serious survey of a seemingly forgotten war
"Honoring Those Who Paid The Price": Forgotten Voices from the Korean War by Randy K. Mills (Associate Professor of History, Oakland City University, Oakland City, Indiana), is a candidly personal, movingly emotional, and informatively serious survey of a seemingly forgotten war that claimed approximately 54,000 American lives. Individual stories of those who served, those who died, and the loved ones who waited anxiously at home, fill this sober tribute. Highly recommended as testimony to the many souls who paid the highest price. "Honoring Those Who Paid The Price" is a welcome addition to Military History collections and would well serve as a template for similar books on other "minor" American twentieth-century conflicts ranging from Granada to Somalia. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Old Comrades poem
I have not yet read this book. However, I am the author of Old Comrades, a poem for which the author and/or publisher has advised the author is unknown. This poem was presented to the Mount Hope Memorial Cemetery in Bangor, Maine, in August 1995.

It hit me with the impact of a burst of burp gun fire, leaping off page406 like the dancing muzzle flash of that same burp gun in the dark ofnight. My God! I was there. Forty-five years ago, I was there. T-Bone Hill, with its valley to the east that led to the gaping "V" of theAlligator Jaws.5-0 out of 5 stars What did you do in the Korean War, daddy ???
Fascinating tales all 201 of them.Narratives which encompass a varied and comprehensive kaleidoscope of men at War. Each yarn a gem in the overall picture of combat: its lethal firefights, the macabre comic moments, and the tedium, all blended to paint America"s forgotten combat troops, the true heroes they really were. While this maelstrom raged on,back home an apathetic American populace, dulled by the [ post WW2 ] Harry-Truman and his cohorts in DC & United Nations, as they tried to sweep the true signifigance of the WAR under the rug,the sour little WAR refused to just go away. In summation, these 201 combat campaigners saw the WAR for what it was - they were in it, up to their eyeballs nite/day.Buy this unique book, read it and you tell me [ yeah, I"m one of the 201 stories ]. We can forgive, but we will never forget!!END ... Read more
