3-0 out of 5 stars The selection is great, however.....
While the editor has done a very credible job of selecting examples of submarine stories, each book is represented by a relatively short excerpt (usually a single chapter). The potential reader must consider that he/she may have their appetite whetted for a particular book or books, but it will then be necessary to seek out a copy of those should there be a desire to read more. Such classics as "The Boat" (The basis for the movie "Das Boot"), Beach's "Run Silent, Run Deep", "The Hunt for Red October", and Calvert's "Silent Running" are presented, but the reader should recognize that these are excerpts, and not full-length stories nor condensations.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Colledtion
The history of the sea is filled with the stories of disasters. And that's about ships that are intended to stay on the surface. Submarines are intended to sink, and hopefully come back up.

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
This book is a good read.It does an excellent job of comparing SOFs from several countries, particularly the U.S., Canada, and Australia, including discussing differences in their equipment and operating philosophies. It told me several things about SOF operations in Afghanistan and Iraq that I had not read about elsewhere, and did a better job of describing a couple I knew about than I have read elsewhere.

5-0 out of 5 stars Concise and timely- Your Situation Report on Special Ops.
David Pugliese gives you the P.D.B. (Presidential Daily Briefing) digest of Special Operations in the recent campaign aginst terror. While the closing chapters are peppered with his political commentary on America's incursion into Iraq, his reporting on operations conducted by the elite forces of the world is a nice, tiddy historical record. The photos are interesting and it is an entertaining read for the history, military and special operations enthusiast. I enjoyed this book and highly recommend it- a fine addition to your military library.

5-0 out of 5 stars An island of intellectual autonomy in a totalitarian state
D. Holloway tells us outstandingly and very detailed the gripping story of the development of nuclear weapons in the Soviet Union. He shows us that the SU success was the result of the effort of Russian scientists with I.V. Kurchatov in a crucial role, although some data were obtained via spying (Klaus Fuchs).
5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview of the Entire Period
Stalin and the Bomb is an excellent overview not only of the Soviet atomic project but of the entire Stalin period.Holloway discusses some of the disastorous policies Stalin pursued in the scientific arena (for example, when it came to biology) and shows how Stalin was able to control his ideological impulses when it came to a project that would net him real power.4-0 out of 5 stars Plenty of characters, with just a few plots.
I was most interested in who had the first hydrogen bomb (the first real plan, the ideal materials, a way to make it, and a test device) and I didn't mind reading about "some radioactive indicator which is formed with the participation of fast deuterons" (p. 304) to find out.Sorting out the physics, which can be revealed to those who care to know, with a comparison of alternate paths to the same result, reveals something far more substantial than the usual plot, based on the politics of world domination, the main concern of Stalin and the author of this book.Stalin gets some sympathy for facing a stark post-war reality, based on his comparison of what World War II did to Russia and Germany, compared to the damage which the few atomic bombs which existed in his lifetime could produce, and it might be said that he acted accordingly in attempting to maintain countervailing threats whenever he was pressured.Any notion of absolute justice, or even feasible military advantage, seems to be as elusive for the superpowers (and one still exists today) as for the petty despots and warlords that often become characters in this book about how such weapons came to be.I didn't mind the revelations about certain events:a war in Korea at a critical point in this book even makes the question of when Mao ordered the Chinese divisions into Korea an interesting question to be considered. In most of these books, I like the events which influenced Sakharov most, the best. The description of the shock wave from the November 1955 test on pages 316-7 includes, "All of this triggers an irrational yet very strong emotional impact." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Mixed Feelings...
For those who are interested in MidEast affairs (as myself) this covers a fascinating topic and is written in a fluid style, which adds up to a truly gripping read.1-0 out of 5 stars Better Spy Fiction Than Ian Fleming
After reading this book I didn't know how to react to much of it.Many of the claims are plausible, many are wildly implausible, and some of the information is just plain factually wrong.Sharon left the IDF in 1973, not 1970 as Menashe says.Shamir retired or "was retired from" the Mossad in 1965 not the "early 1970s."Ben-Menashe is the first person who claims that the IAF has B-52s--two squadrons no less--but he doesn't say where Israel hides these massive eight-engine bombers. He also claimed that the murder of an old American Jewish cripple by Abul Abbas' organization on the Italian cruise ship Achille Lauro was an Israeli plot to discredit the PLO.Ben-Menashe doesn't really document any of his claims but asks us just to trust him.His first whopper is to claim that Shimon Peres had been paid millions by Lockheed while defense minister.Since all of Israel's American fighters were built by McDonnel Douglas or General Dynamics this seems highly unlikely.Israel does use the Lockheed C-130, but the Lockheed scandal in Europe at the same time was to get the Belgians, Dutch, and Italians to purchase F-104 Starfighter interceptors. This is typical of Ben-Menashe--he seems to take bits of news and spin it into a plot like a Hollywood screenwriter.

4-0 out of 5 stars Ari Ben-Manashe's experience
An excellent well documented book by a high level Israeli agent. I have to give Sheridan Square Press's publishers Ellen Ray & Bill the Credit for the content as the author did the same. Most of us out of the publishing, or, media business are not skilled writers.Sheridian Square Press out of N.Y., N.Y. did the same service for the deceased Jim Garrison in his book "On the Trails of Assassins" documenting events leading up to the events of the Kennedy asassination that Oliver Stone made a movie of. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars High Quality Work
This is the sort of high quality work that one has come to expect from the Anatomy of the Ship series. There are excellent line drawings illustrating the variants and components of World War II Germany's Type VII U-boat, the type most in use during the war. Text is fairly sparse, but in addition to the line drawings, there are some color illustrations of individual U-boat markings and other support material. Essential reading for the U-waffe fan.

1-0 out of 5 stars Did not hold my interest
Book was written as a primer for the Uboat commander. I have read many books about the Uboat war and thought that this book would give me some insight into the Uboat commanders' thinking and training, but found the book very boring.
4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting book for U-Boat simmers
This handbook is a wartime translation of the official handbook of German U-boat commanders: it explain tactics and reveals a lot of technical details about submarine war in WWII, but some passages apears difficult to understand without a specific background (also because the translation is not up-to-date with current terminolgy). I think that some footnotes could resolve the problem.
5-0 out of 5 stars An interesting historic document
It's a real interesting historic document about u-boot tactics (navigation, attack, escape).

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Translation of a Classic
The Art of War seems to be a classic piece of Chinese philosophy that is easy to translate into a mediocre work.I've read a number of translations of Sun Tzu that are clunky and have none of the wit of the original text. Now, I don't read ancient Chinese, but when a Chinese philisophical text reads like a manual for a microwave, you know something is lost in translation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding for the serious beginner or experienced pilot
When I first bought this book I had been flying for several decades. My regret was that I had not read it earlier and the students who use the book in aviation courses have a significant advantage in their training.
4-0 out of 5 stars Well done...
This is an excellent, well priced book.I think it is especially useful for engineers who are not aeronautical engineers. It is also very useful as a companion book to a calculus-based aerodynamics book. The mathematics in this book are not difficult--which is nice since it allows the reader to concentrate on the basic concepts of flight and aerodynamics. My one point deduction comes only because more problem solving would be appreciated--but there are plenty of other texts for that.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great quality
I've just bought a special book to navy's pilot which is about how to understand aerodynamics for naval aviators. The service is good and it took not so much time as I thought it would take and the book is new in great quality paper, that's why I rate this item to 5 stars.

Editorial Review

The wars in Afghanistan and Iraq have given the U.S. Army's Special Forces, also known as the Green Berets, a central role in American military action like never before. Several hundred U.S. Special Forces operators helped a motley band of Afghan rebels orchestrate a stunning rout when they overthrew the Taliban after 9/11. 5-0 out of 5 stars masters of chaos
I thought this book was an excellent piece of literature. When you are reading it you see yourself as being one of the "operators" on the ground. She had diversity and didnt jump around like some books do. I applaud her ability to imform the reader of what the Special Operations community is capable of and shed some light if you will to those persons not aware of these types of units.

2-0 out of 5 stars Missleading title and cover
Goes to show you that you better read all of the reviews. I didn't like the author's style of writing and sure didn't care for her written opinion, which is throughout the book and primarily at the end. I made myself finish this one, but I wouldn't ever purchase another book by this author.

3-0 out of 5 stars A book written by a newbie for newbies
I was disappointed by this book. For one thing, it's one of the few cases in which I have been totally misled by the reader reviews on Amazon.com, which liberally use the word "excellent" to describe this book. The book isn't excellent, it's good, which given the exciting subject is a real shame.

4-0 out of 5 stars Too much squeezed into too few pages?
Mr. Beckett's coverage of the development of insurgency movements from the time of Napolean to recent years is a daunting goal. He covered a great deal of material and seemed to cover a lot of material in not nearly enough detail for the sake of mentioning every guerrilla movement imaginable while covering only a few in detail. In fairness, I believe his intent was to track major shifts in insurgency philosophies or counter-insurgency doctrines. But one could hardly help getting the feeling of being dragged on a guided tour where the tour guide would let you linger only at the sights he wants you to see while mentioning the others only in passing quickly by.It is a noble task but could have been shorter by avoiding the side stories or longer by providing more details on the ones mentioned. It seems too much for 250 pages to hold.Still, overall, it was a good read and gives plenty of direction for those wishing to discover some hidden corner of insurgency others might have left unnoticed. Read Mr. Beckett's Modern Insurgencies to get your bearings then head out in one of the many directions he points for a specialty that suits your interests.

3-0 out of 5 stars Questionable Credibility
The author writes an very interesting book, sometimes it races along and at other times it becomes tedious. The author also offers many quotes and what appears to be tons of background, supportive and historical evidence to support his claims; Yet the author gives absolutely no footnotes or endnotes that one might validate or verify his sources. I was able to correctly identify many of his sources, but an over reliance on one's memory is not a useful academic tool. If one is seeking a credible research source, I can not honestly recommend this book, strictly on the basis that an indiviudal can not substantiate primary and or secondary sources as the author has used them.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars A walk on the 'wild side'
An excellent first person treatise on the most delicate of subjects, Public Safety Bomb Disposal. While not revealing anything of an operational or technical nature, so as not totip the hand to the bombers, the author leads us through a whirlwind tour of many places angels fear to tread. Chock full of details of the fight to keep the streets of Northern Ireland among other places, safe to travel, there are few slow points in the text. An excellent read, looking forward to volume two!

5-0 out of 5 stars A memorial to those who took the longest walk one way.
The never-before-told history of bomb disposal in the british military and police forces. Related in a highly professional manner. The author has peeled off the thin skin of smoke from a subject rarely revealed in bookformat while not revealing any tricks of the trade which would assistpotential bomb makers. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent effort on a difficult topic
The Anatomy of Courage strives to dissect the problem of courage and give the commander a tool to enhance it in battle, to increase it in training, or to find it in recruiting. He discusses the mystery of why one person can fight in the trenches (In WWI) for days or weeks and then one day, simply break. He searches for methods to discover than breaking point and extend it - to maximize the use of that precious commodity. He fails.Instead, he seems to say that the only really beneficial thing the commander can do is recognize the man that has courage and recruit him for service.Promote him when he demonstrates it and hope for the best from the rest of his troops. It is not a happy discovery for the author but he doesn't do well discovering a solution to the problem. It is not for lack of effort and his thoroughness makes the prospects for another would be problem solver seem just as bleak.

4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of information
My fiance is in the Navy and he bought me a copy of this when I went to see him pass-in-review. He told me that it would answer a lot of my questions I might have had- well it has! I learned about differnt ships, all of the information on Tricare (the Navy's insurance), dependents...you name it, it's in there! If you've got a loved one in the Navy (child, spouse, fiance/e, girlfriend/boyfriend, sibling, etc.) I suggest this book!

5-0 out of 5 stars THE source of information about the Navy
Although everyone is issued this manual in boot-camp (RTC) it is still essential reading for several people.Read more

Editorial Review

With the possible exception of George S. Patton, is there a 20th century military figure who fascinates us as does Douglas MacArthur? Hero of Leyte, military genius, youngest brigadier general in World War I, MacArthur had a brilliant mind and an eye for self-promotion. This latest biography, utilizing substantial new research, makes a strong case for MacArthur's leadership abilities and his fierce independence without neglecting MacArthur's shortcomings as a man and as a tactician. Perret concludes that the landing at Inchon, which turned U.S. fortunes around in the Korean War, was one of the boldest and best-executed military invasions in history. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good, not great book on the General.
Obviously, the right starting place for MacArthur would be William Manchester's book. However, this one does not disappoint. As a matter of fact, of all Perret's books, this one is most likely the best, despite its flaws. Our subject is the greatest military mind this country has ever produced.
5-0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT STARTING PLACE FOR THE STUDY OF MACARTHUR
As several reviewers pointed out, this book has a few flaws.I do feel some of the criticisms hurled are a bit off the mark. This is a one volume book. There is absolutly no way a completely comprehensive sudy of this man could be accomplished in such a short space. For a one volume work though, it is very, very good.Yes, you can disagree as to the actual greatness of the man, as reflected in the various stages of his life, but the author has at least presented to us a starting point. This work, along with others, gives us a good picture of Macarthur the soldier and the man.Recommend you read this one.

4-0 out of 5 stars An interesting, well written book
