1-0 out of 5 stars Great American Soldier -- Cumbersome Biography
This comprehensive biography of one of America's great soldiers traces Pershing's life from his middle class upbringing in rural Missouri, to West Point, to the Western frontier during the final years of the Indian wars, to the Philippines, to the Punitive Expedition to Mexico and finally to France and the command of the American Expeditionary Force. Pershing's no-nonsense personality and his insistence on discipline and training is evident throughout. But the author has difficulty achieving any balance in his reporting. A sentence suffices to explain the treaty terms with Germany at the conclusion of WWI, but endless pages describe medal ceremonies and the atmospherics of military conferences. The lengthy work is replete with platitudes, cliches and vague characterizations. It quickly becomes tiresome. Find another biography of this great American.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent biography of a great American general
I asked for this biography as a Christmas present 20 years ago.I finally got around to reading it, and I was not disappointed.Dr. Vandiver has written an first-rate biography which compares to Dumas Malone's sextet onThomas Jefferson and Douglas S. Freeman's classic four-volume opus onRobert E. Lee. John Pershing probably has languished in obscurity in recenttimes because of the events which followed World War I (the RoaringTwenties, the Depression) and World War II, which resulted from, asPershing himself warned, failing to fight World War I to a decisive finish. He is also denigrated by some as not being able to chase down Pancho Villaduring the Punitive Expedition. Vandiver sets the record of historystraight on Pershing, though, as nearly all biographers of great men arewont to do, he does lapse into hagiography and glosses too readily in manyinstances over his faults and weaknesses.Nevertheless he fairly portraysPershing as the simple, direct, honest, energetic, efficient, and dedicatedman and soldier who rose to the rank of General of the Armies, a rankattained only byGeorge Washington before him.Vandiver traces Pershingfrom his youth, his sojourn as a teacher in a small school, and his cadetdays at West Point, showing how his values and experiences moulded him wellfor the service and duty he would render his country for decades.FromWest Point, Pershing went west to become an Indian fighter, to Cuba in theSpanish-American War, and then to the Phillipines, where he conquered thewild Moro tribes of Mindanao.Pershing performed each of his assignmentswith excellence and bravery, always earning the highest praise from hissuperiors. He was a spit-and-polish martinet, insisting that hissubordinates conform to the highest standards set at West Point. He neverasked of his men anything he would not ask of himself, and he honestlybelieved that all that drill, efficiency, and discipline put his soldiersat the minimum risk when the tasks of campaigning and battle were at hand. He had no patience with slovenly subordinate officers who let theircommands slide.Pershing did have a knack for selecting excellentsubordinates, and rarely had problems getting his overall plans andobjectives executed. The best part of Vandiver's work is that whichdescribes Pershing's command of the AEF.Thegeneral did an incrediblejob of commanding themobilization, buildup of troops and materiel inFrance, and ensuring the training of his Doughboys, all the time holdingoff repeated French and British attempts to siphon off and amalgamate thearriving American soldiers into their forces.Had the French and Britishsucceeded, it is not inconceivable that they would have wasted thousands ofAmerican soldiers in the grinding, failing trench warfare the French andBritish were accustomed to on the Western Front.Pershing's doggedinsistence on an American army angered the Allies, but proved decisive andeffective in the last five months of the conflict. To their everlastingcredit, both Secretary of War Newton Baker and President Wilson also neverwavered from this course, and backed up Pershing fully whenever LloydGeorge or Clemenceau tried to press their case over the general's head.Vandiver fully portrays the human side of General Pershing, including hismarriage to Frances Warren, their brief 10 years together, and his grief atlosing her and their three daughters in a fire at the Presidio in 1915.Healso depicts Pershing's social circle as a young man, and the fortuitousfriendships with men who became extremely influential and helpful to himlater in life. Many of the subordinates he mentored and nurtured alleither proved essential to the building and command of the AEF and/orbecame the pillars of America's armed forces in World War II (Marshall,Patton, and MacArthur, for example). This biography does have a feweditorial flaws.Dr. Vandiver, who was a prodigy who never attended highschool or undergraduate school, does some excellent writing for having hadno formal coursework, but he does have a shocking weakness in writingsubordinate clauses as separate sentences.Of which this is an example.Agood editor would have caught the few dozen instances in this work andrevised the grammar. Also Dr. Vandiver sometimes drops articles from asentence, resulting in some clumsy passages.Again, good editing wouldhave corrected these. At the end of the second volume, as Pershing'sretirement approaches, Dr. Vandiver omits the necessary explanation that,in 1924, the mandatory retirement age in the armed forces was 64; thereader has to infer that from the narrative. Nevertheless Dr. Vandiver hita home run with his biography of Pershing, and it deserved far more acclaimand exposure than it has enjoyed in the past 20 years. Reading about thisgenuine American hero was a breath of fresh air in these times ofantiheroes.America today surely needs more men like General Pershing. Thanks to Dr. Vandiver, he will not be forgotten. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars "A Million and a Trillion"
After the first Gulf War, several second/third world countries made the observation that the technical and other advantages possesed by the U. S. make it imperative that any country concerned about an attack from the United States have nuclear weapons. I note that I don't see President Bush talking much about attacking North Korea. General Gary Luck offered a quick sound bite on the costs of a war in N. Korea: "one million casualties, one trillion dollars in industrial damage and lost business."
5-0 out of 5 stars An accessible yet academic look at the Korean crisis
Professors Cha and Kang come at the current and historic crisis in North Korea from different angles:Cha from a more "realist" view of international relations, Kang from a more "liberal" view. The book is a series of several chapters written alternately by Cha and Kang with each pair of chapters focusing on one aspect of the Korean problem. Both view North Korea as being entirely "rational," and make a point to discredit 30-second sound byte types of analyses of North Korea's decisionmaking process.Cha finds that it is perfectly rational for North Korea to attack or go nuclear even if the end result has a high probability of resulting in total destruction, because the status quo is so unbearable that the North is willing to bear the risk.Kang suggests that increased economic development, integration into the world economy, and the introduction of market forces will alter North Korea's cost-benefit analysis and push it away from violent military action or the active pursuit of a nuclear weapons program. In the end, both agree that the default strategy for the United States is engagement.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Expect more from a $96 book
While Mr. Adamy may be an expert, apparently these books were thrown together a little quickly.Read the text and all will be well.Follow the example problems in the back and you're headed for a train wreck. When he works the problems they are frought with mistakes, big, blatant mistakes. For someone trying to learn EW the first time these are huge confidence deflators.Find an independent source to check your answers.

5-0 out of 5 stars clear descriptions of measure and countermeasure
This book is the logically titled sequel to EW 101. The style is the same. Namely where very intricate and specialised maths and engineering is deprecated. What Adamy has done is reduce a problem down to the minimum physical model that conveys the essential information. This lets a reader, who might not be an engineer in the electronic warfare field, understand what the various measures and countermeasures are about.

3-0 out of 5 stars No Money to Fight
Gentleman, in one word Japan lost the war because of: No Money. By that I mean they don't have the resources or vision to fight a protracted war. That explains why the vaulted Zero is so lightly built in becauae they can't afford a high power engine. They don't have the money to finance the infra structure, like a fleet of bulldozers to build airstrips faster, so they have to be light to fly much longer distance to compensate for the lack of facilities. There is also not enough resource to exploit the technolgy on the horizon, like radar so their surface fighting vessels have to rely on the romantic and gallant (in their minds) night fighting skills to address the material imbalance. It is like an Indian who is skilled in shooting arrows on horseback but fails to adapt to the rapidly evolving battle scene. They fought a poor man's war against the comparatively lavishly equipped US Navy, of course the outcoming is to no one's surprise. If you ask any Japanese born before the war, most of them would maintain they lost the war on the material front, not giving an inch in their fighting spirit and prowness (maybe so). Yes they are too proud to admit or blind to the concept that Imperial Japan's intent is vile, nothing more than brutal slavery to the people in their new found colonies.

4-0 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Balance
Kaigun sets the stage of the Pacific war and essentially ends when the curtain rises in December of 1941 . It provides the context required to understand the actions of Japanese commanders and their weapons during subsequent naval battles .
5-0 out of 5 stars To Understand Modern Strategy Better Read This Book
In this day of asymmetric warfare, the history of the Japanese navy hardly seems relevant, but this book is so well-written it should be read by all strategists. It very effortlessly opens the eyes of the reader to the transformative processes that brought Japan out of the shadows of an antiquated feudal system into the forefront of military prowess in the span of less than 100 years. That alone merits the read of this book. But it clearly shows how Japan's military intellectuals adapted western thought and technology and fused western military and political rules with the classic ideals of Asian military strategy. There is a lot to be learned from seeing how the process worked in Japan. And in our ever-changing world, there is always a lot to be learned from the successes of others in adaptation and fusion of ideas and strategies. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellant Book for Sail Making Theory
I purchased this book with the sole purpose of understanding sail theory, with an very distant goal of one day making my own sail. The book is written in a very understanding manner, and explains more complex procedures in a precise and encouraging manner. The book introdues you to the tools and procedures through making a small bag to carry your tools. This is a great book for the money, and I highly encourage anyone wanting to learn about the different procedures for making various sail configurations. However wonderful this book is, I would not recommend it if you are wanting to build your own high-performance sails, as it is geared towards sailing in a more relaxed and functional manner.

5-0 out of 5 stars Vital Info
As someone who served in the Army, I have had plenty of NBC training and can say that this book is something that everyone should take the time to read. In fact I learned even more from this book because it is presented in a way that anyone can understand, and it is targeted for use by the civilian population. READ IT, it may save your life one day.

5-0 out of 5 stars Highly Recommended!
We assigned writer prepared this recommendation on a lovely, though warm summer day, while butterflies fluttered over a stand of purple thistles. Until he read this book, it seemed like a peaceful scene. Then, it seemed full of threats and hidden perils. He wondered if his building is strong enough to protect against a nuclear attack. What will his family do if someone sprays anthrax spores from a crop duster? Is there a clear spot in the basement to store enough gas masks, and which ones? This book will make you paranoid, too. It says that the threat of an attack is real and growing. You could laugh that off, except that the police just busted an arms dealer for trying to bring missiles into the U.S., except that someone mailed anthrax to strangers, except that there used to be towers at the World Trade Center. Are recommendation - buy this book, read it, then decide whether it is better to prepare or to take your chances. Feeling lucky? At least go buy some flashlight batteries

4-0 out of 5 stars This book is very terrifying and very real
As a former SEAL I have read several of Captain Couch's novels and liked them all.I thought that I would take a chance on this book because of his reputation.I am glad I did and have bought several more copies through you all for relatives. There is a wealth of great material here and I'll give the sequel five stars instead of four if it's longer! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best
This is one of the better books I've bought and read on the art of the ninja and I recommend it to anyone. The basic training drills will help any new student of the art progress. While I somewhat agree with some people that learning from a book is not the best way to learn any martial art, I believe with the right intention anyone can gain good knowledge and even master some techniques through this book and others by this author.

5-0 out of 5 stars yeah it was good
this shows some basic moves of taijitsu but thats pretty much all no advanced moves then again sometimes basics are quick and effective oh and uhhh gobli are you retarded

1-0 out of 5 stars Eh..
This book has some good notes on condiitioning. The rest is just a poor attempt at trying to teach you how to fight. You can't lean that from a book, esspecially from this "Taijutsu" fighitng system their promoting. Don't buy it, get a Bruce Lee book to make up for the fitness tips your missing. ... Read more

A book for WWII aircraft and modeling enthusiasts. Great little softcover which starts with the circumstances and people leading into the design, developement and prototype testing of the P-51, argueably the mostsuccessfull allied fighter plane of that war. Not a page without a topquality black and white photograph or funky color prints of war propagandaposters. Lots of close up shots of technical details as well as factorylayouts, assembly line photographs, windtunnel testing info, and gossip onthe people involved in this machine's inseption. 3-0 out of 5 stars A few grains of truth in a lot of chaff
Today many of Sun Tzu quotas are floating around mixed with Shakespeare and the Bible. And as with many of the quote they are out of context and misleading. The quoter usually thinks repeating the word is some sort of magic.
3-0 out of 5 stars Some contrarian remarks
This is a legendary book and has gotten a lot of play these days, from Wall St. to Hollywood types--including such notables as writer James Clavell. While I respect Clavell and am very familiar with the book, frankly, I don't see what all the commotion is about. The supposedly profound psychological principles that can be used to outwit your opponent, among many other strategems discussed, I found to be pretty elementary and not particularly astute. Perhaps for it's time this qualified as state of the art, but not anymore. Most of them are, or should be, pretty obvious.
5-0 out of 5 stars This book on audio rules!
Joe Mantegna is great. I think that the audio works better than the actual book for this piece of art because of him. If you mix both the audio and the book probably it will give you a better understanding of Sun Tzu's teachings. I may try it myself. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference
This is a very well written and informative book. The amount of research to write it must have been staggering.I stronglyrecommend this to anyone interested in the subject.I have had a little problem finding the meanings for all the symbology used by the author, but this is a minor problem.

5-0 out of 5 stars Uniform Buttons of the United States, 1776-1865
I do not know of any more comprehensive book on American uniform buttons, and I have been heavily involved in the collecting of Civil War buttons forseven years. I have acquired a number of books on the subject, but I usenone more frequently than this one. In this field of study, AlpaeusAlbert set the standard with his book, "Record of American Uniform andHistorical Buttons". Warren Tice makes a number of notableimprovements over Albert's book. Tice's book includes many buttons unlistedby Albert. Tice also often gives a short history of the button, or of themilitary men known to have worn that specific variety of button. Tice alsolists more backmarks, and makes many statements concerning the scarcity oravailability of certain buttons or varieties of buttons, this is somethingthat Albert neglected to do. Whereas Albert's book is simply a cataloguingof military buttons, Tice's book is a comprehensive and exhaustive study. At the beginning of the book Tice delves into the history of button making, giving information on all known button manufacturers- including a listingof the buttons each manufacturer produced. He then lists and pictures allknown buttons of Federal armed forces 1830-1865- including political, patriotic, and personal image, Confederate armed forces, Militia buttons ofthe 31 states and District of Columbia known to have produced buttonsduring this period, and a section on unidentified buttons of the Antebellumand Civil War period. All in all, this is a wealth of information thatno military button collector should be without. I would feel as if I werebuying and trading blindly without it.It is noteworthy that Tice doesnot list button values in this book. Tice does sell a seperate book thatlists only values; this book is of use only to the collector of non-excavated buttons. If Civil War buttons are your interest, and you collectexcavated, as well as nonexcavated I recommend the North South Traders"Civil War Collector's Price Guide. Good luck with your buttoncollecting, I know this book will be a useful and irreplaceable addition toyour personal library.

4-0 out of 5 stars correction of an error
This book is really well written, with two major errors from my viewpoint. My gg uncle was William C. Wildt, son of William Wildt of Richmond, Va, who made buttons with the imprint of W. Wildt and Son, Richmond, VA.Thecorrection is that there were two brothers who came from Prussia:Juliusand William.William had two children, William C., and Elisa Wildt. Juliushad one child, Julius, Jr. Julius, Jr. was a hunchback, and an artist.Wehave one of his paintings. He manufactured buttons for the ConfederateArmy with a Mr. Kline, in Columbia, SC. William C. Wildt manufacturedbuttons with his father, William, in Richmond, VA.After the Civil War, hemoved to Rockford City, Illinois, and married a lady named Agnes, who wasfrom Madison, Wisconsin.William C. also served as Vice Consul andConsulate Agent in Honduras for the US in the 1890's, and died in Illinoisin 1908. Julius, Jr. and his mother, Elizabeth Wildt, died of Spanish fluin Richmond, VA., in 1918. William C.'s sister, Elisa Wildt, married NumaRobert, divorced him in June of 1865, and married Ernst Kahl. She died in1941 at the home of her daughter, Mrs. O. F. Ostergren, my grandmother. 4-0 out of 5 stars Very informative
This manual is crammed full of information illustrations. It's got information on intelligence gathering, psyops, infiltration, mission planning, training, air operations, raids, ambushes, water operations, communications, logistics, demolitions, and field medicine. However, like most field manuals the reading is extremely dry - the information is given so concisely it almost makes it hard to read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great book to understand insurgency and terrorism
I have read the first edition of this book and I found it very useful to understand insurgency and terrorism. Moreover I wish I had read this book when I was in Colombia or in Haiti where we had to deal with insurgencies. In my opinion the book is an important tool for the intelligence analyst because it shows a framework to analyze the complex phenomenon of guerilla and insurgency. It was very valuable for me to learn about the four strategic approaches (conspiratorial - military focus - protracted popular war - and urban warfare)
5-0 out of 5 stars The Textbook on Insurgency and Counterinsurgency
Terrorism and Insurgency by Bard E. O'Neill, is an invaluable resource for those interested in understanding insurgency and the relevant factors that lead to its success or failure.
5-0 out of 5 stars GreatReference
This is an excellent book. The author is a well known and respected expert of the field. The book begins with an introduction that attempts to level set and baseline definitions and meanings. Although this may appear to be semantics, the differences both subtle and great is important. The book is well organized it is easy to refer to a specific chapter or section in the event you need a quick refresher and or reference. The book is well written, concise and offers a large quantity of foot notes at the end of each chapter. This book is for both the expert and the novice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Navy Wives have it easy in comparison....
All military spouses have interesting stories to tell--it's part of our uniqueness. And as a Navy spouse, I have gone through deployments; my husband would go to sea for months at a time, but I never have a fear like the kind described in Henderson's book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Must have for spouses of servicemembers who are deploying.
Kristin has written a book that could be used as a handbook for anyone who is in or about to experience a deployment. The way she describes the phases of deployment as well as the casualty notification process is incredible. It is obvious that Kristin has not only experienced deployment, but has done in depth research to provide us with all of the information she could. I've bought many for gifts. Highly recommended!!!!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Well written
This book started out as a series of articles. I can see where the content in article form would have been even more powerful than it is as a book. As a book, however, it does a very good job of explaining the emotional and intellectual aspects of the lives of families with people in a war zone. It has been over a year since my husband's return, but this book was still able to reach me and help explain some of what we went through as a family. I will be reccomending this book to others in our situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Well done, clear message
The media dwells on American actions, with their armchair quarterbarck view. We face difficult decisions but the existential threat is real - and the need to face those threats is clear.

1-0 out of 5 stars Very, very sad
Bennett's own logic undermines itself. He is in essence arguing that to be a truly patriotic American, one must check your brains in at the door and unquestioningly accept everything our government tells us. Welcome to the machine.
1-0 out of 5 stars This book is terrible
I was reading a debate between Noam Chomsky and William Bennet on their new books, so I decided to buy them both. I won't review Mr. Chomsky's book here, but Mr. Bennet's book is terrible. I thought it was bad enough to actually write a review so other people do not buy this book. The message is basically, if you love your country, agree and support what your government does. ...
