3-0 out of 5 stars Land Power Military Operations Research
Jaiswal provides the most recent land power-focused military operations research volume. He provides a basic survey of the field, beginning with a very brief discussion of the origins of OR in the military. His topics include search and detection, military simulation, cost effectiveness analysis, optimization, the Analytic Hierarchy Process, Lanchester equations, and a quantified approach to intelligence analysis. The reader should be aware that his coverage of various specific military simulation models is a bit dated, as one should expect in a book, and limited in scope.Beyond that topic, his treatment is broad and therefore less sensitive to the passage of time. The book is a survey, so depth of treatment is not present. But it fills the intended role of pulling together disparate topics of land-based military OR.It also provides some perspective on non NATO defense issues. It must be challenging to decide what to exclude, but surprisingly there is no coverage of network flows, queuing theory, decision analysis, or game theory which have clear military applications. The focus is also on operations rather than the logistics of military analysis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent and Only Text on Military OR
This book is by far the only book that comprehensively deals with Military Operations Research (MOR). The OR/SA field despite its origins in Military Operations has not seen as many books and texts as the business OR or Theory of OR. This can be attributed to the confidential nature of work the practitioners of MOR carry out.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Musashi vs Yagyus: Duels In Writing
MUSASHI is no doubt the legendary Samurai hero dramatized into a number of plays and novels most famous of which is by Yoshikawa Eiji. Thomas Cleary not only translated this classic by Musashi's own writing into English, but he also introduced Musashi's archrival bushido school by Yagyus' chief Munenori's "The Book of Family Traditions of Book of War". Such coupling should cause much uproars from pure bushido followers which take sides of either ideas of the way of sword.

Editorial Review

Marines are different: distinct not only from ordinary U.S. citizens but from the ranks of the army, navy, and air force as well. The difference begins with boot camp at Parris Island, South Carolina, where the history and future of the United States Marine Corps intersect in the training of every new recruit. In Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Interesting Book
An interesting paperback that walks you through boot camp at Paris Island with real recruits. My daughter was about to start boot camp at Paris Island so I was able to see what she should expect. The book keeps track of some of the recruits from start to finish. Some make it through and some don't.

5-0 out of 5 stars A well-written look at the Marines of the mid-1990's
I enjoyed reading this book and the picture it gives of Marine Corps Boot Camp and Marine Corps culture and what makes it tick.I only wish the author would do an update, a ten-year later kind of work to see what happened to those Marines. That would be interesting.Reading this, it made me think there is a probabably a great need for the Marines far beyond their military role ("The US doessn't need a Marine Corps, it wants one!") simply because the US would not be the same without one.
5-0 out of 5 stars Making the Corps...The MARINE CORPS

2-0 out of 5 stars Scattered and loses focus
Eliot Cohen has an impressive background in policy work (OSD) and academia (Naval War College and Harvard).I had high hopes for this book because I thought his experience with the military combined with his academic work would produce a focused and well-grounded work.I was disappointed.I never really bought his argument that political leaders can lead war better than generals. He seemed to cherry pick leaders than fit his mold.I could not believe that someone who works so closely with the military would generalize military leadership in such a stereotypical way.
1-0 out of 5 stars Square peg into round hole (or, stop after the 4 bios)
This would have been 4 stars had I stopped after the individual chapters on Abraham Lincoln, Georges Clemenceau, Winston Churchill and David Ben Gurion. However, I unfortunately found out, in the subsequent chapter, that Cohen's REAL purpose was an end-around to attack American leadership during Vietnam (and, to a lesser extent, the Gulf War). For a book that focuses on leaders from England, France, and Israel, as well as the US, this struck me as a non-sequitor out of left field.
2-0 out of 5 stars Not a well thought out book.
The writer tries to generalize from the experience of four great statesmen in war times to make a conclusion that politicians should tell generals what to do!

5-0 out of 5 stars The Only Book Available on the Subject
The advent of fire arms spelt the end of the armored knight of old. Until very recently the soldier on the battlefield had no protection from being shot. The problem is that the only materials that would offer suitable protection was steel, and steel is so heavy that it is impractical to protect more than a small part of the body. Usually only the head was protected using helmets that offered some protection from the fragments of shrapnel of grenades and exploding artillery.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent technical history of the Tiger II
Thomas Jentz and artist/collaborator Hillary Louis Doyle have created an excellent technical overview of the development and production modifications of the Tiger II "King Tiger," using only originaldocumentation and actual preserved vehicles as references. There is nosecond-hand information of any kind, and no propagation of postwar myths. There is less pure engineering information than the earlier work by WalterSpielberger (i.e. don't expect diagrams of the inner workings of engine andtransmissions), but the intended audience for this book is clearly themodel-builder. The numerous drawings are to the popular modeler's scale of1/35th, and numerous detail photos will aid the would-be model builder. Incombination with such works as Wolfgang Schneider's "Tigers inCombat," you would have an ideal library on the King Tiger. However, this volume does not cover the Jagdtiger tank destroyer (Schiffer doespublish a two-volume work on this vehicle by another author).

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
Dick Couch takes you on a good look into the training of Seal Class 228.His way of writing is easy to read and the book is laid out well and informative.I did not care for his attempts at ego shots towards the Army schools that provide specialized training to the other services along with the seals.I'm sure you can tell that this is my biased opinion though :-)
4-0 out of 5 stars The Training of Winners
The Warrior Elite, written by Dean Couch, is an excellent account of the type of training that makes a Navy Seal. The author is with class 228 from start to finish, detailing how many there are (and most of the time how many are left), what they are doing, how they are doing it, and why.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wow!
Being in the Navy, and with unrealized macho ambitions, I bought this book to try to understand the people who shoot and get shot at for a living. This book is an amazing account for the27 weeks journey of a groupd of men through their initial training. It illustrates the amazing physical condition, the determination and, suprisingly, the luck that got these men through the training. Not that they got through on luck, but that some others were simply unlucky and didn't make it.

This is a good bible for anyone plus it has many additional features such as stories from other Marines and other patriotic items. My Marine grandson said he will treasure it as he goes off to Iraq.

5-0 out of 5 stars Marine Bible--Great Purchase
I purchased the Bible as a gift for my Marine nephew. It is exactly as I had hoped it would be.It is filled with many inspirational commentaries and verses as well as Bible readings. It arrived quickly and in perfect condition and I was able to send it to my nephew the day he deployed to Iraq.

5-0 out of 5 stars Handsome bible, great value
This is a very handsome leather bible series. Each bible contains the excellent (because it is very accurate and highly readable) Holman's Christian Standard translation. Special helps, prayers, and encouragements for policemen, firemen, and armed forces personnel are contained in each bible. The insignia or symbol of each occupation is nicely printed on the cover. It is sad that due to another religion (guess which one?) we now have a large market for bibles for the swelling ranks of the armed forces fighting the cruel and barbaric methods of those dedicated to violence in the name of their god. Onward, Christian Soldiers - and take a copy of one of these great bibles. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Knife Fighting Classic - Good Intermediate Training Manual
"Knife Fighting, Knife Throwing for Combat" by Michael D. Echanis was originally published in the late 1970s and developed a `cult following' among martial artists and knife aficionados.

The late Mike Echanis was a true warrrior and has written a book for warriors. It is about combat, not sport and demonstrates very advanced knife techniques. These techniques have been proven in battle over centuries. In the Hwa Rang Do system, the knife becomes an extension of the hand. The techniques, although ably demonstrated and photographed, must still be practiced under the guidance of a Hwa Rang Do Master if one is to become proficient. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars REPLACES Clauswitz
To call Hart the Clauswitz of the 20th century is an insult. He rebukes what have become stereotypical interpretations of Clauswitz, but also shows how what Clauswitz really wrote is just not really valid in history's rearview mirror.IMHO, a must read for any serious student of history, or any politician, whether or not military history interests you.

I read this work will reading Mahan (whom Huges is very critical of) and found them to both contain the part the other lacks. Mahan, focusing on national policy, neglects the importance of tactics and their evolution. Hughes, however, states that tactics have universal pillers that remain despite the evloution in technology.5-0 out of 5 stars Best book I have seen on Naval tactics
Although written as a text book. A person can read this book and get an appreciation of the problems of naval warfare particularly involving fleet. Many historical problems that I have heard. Such as why the German's in WW1did not use their fleet much more and why the Japanese kept splitting their fleet in WW2 are explained here very well. 5-0 out of 5 stars Excelent summary of tactical principles
The book is a very good summary about five principles of naval tactics (Scouting, Command, Doctrine, Information, Training ) that could apply almost wherever there are forces in conflict or complex actions integratedby several people. 5-0 out of 5 stars Good book on resource geopolitics. My 13 yo son loves it
We all knew that respources, like money, move the world. And that by explaining the concentration, consumption and need to control them, everything we see in geopolitics can be somehow explained.
3-0 out of 5 stars Needs a 2nd edition
This is a decent book.It is well researched and referenced, and it contains a lot of interesting information about foriegn policy with respect to resources (especially oil and water).Klare remains rather nuetral throughout, which is rather refreshing.Unfortunately, it is a little dated by now (written when the Taliban still controled Afganistan and before the Iraq war). Most of the US foreign policy dates back to the Clinton era.
4-0 out of 5 stars balanced and dispassionate analysis
Thirty or forty years in the future, people will look back at Resource Wars by Michael Klare as one of those books they wished they had read, or as one that policymakers should have read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely the best single volume reference on the market!
After having purchased hundreds of reference books on AFV's over the years, this is the book I keep going back to the most. From WWI up through modern, the sheer amount of information included is staggering, especially considering it features many designs you will not find in even more focused collections.
5-0 out of 5 stars Superb work for those interested in classic armor
As was indicated in a previous review, if you need up-to-the-minute data on modern Armored Fighting Vehicles (AFVs), this is not the book for you. However, that is just about its only weakness.
4-0 out of 5 stars More coffee table than reference
I'm a big fan of anything Chris Foss writes, publishes or edits. His facts aren't always spot on - his deadlines for publication obviously have him rush and cut corners. I purchased this book in December 2003 and have spent many hours flipping the pages. Overall - I enjoy owning and reading this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The theory of unconventional conflict
I read the first edition of this book which was published in 1965 - so I don't know whether this edition is a revised one. Remember that, at the time the original one was published, the Vietnam War was still on - and Che Guevara was still alive & very much active. So the first edition does not make any reference to either the greatest triumph of guerrilla warfare, defeat of the vastly superior US forces to the peasant army of the Vietcong and North Vietnam; nor its dismal failure in almost all other parts of the world, symbolically represented in Che's death in Bolivia. This was the time when everyone thought that guerrilla warfare was the wave of the future; and there were a number of books on its theory and practice. There was Che's own "Guerrilla Warfare", Regis Debray's "Revolution of the Revolution", Carlos Marighella's manual on urban guerrilla warfare, etc (I remember seeing at least a couple more books which came out during this period). There were also books on counter-insurgency, mostly by ex-US Special Forces experts, most of which confidently predicted that US victory over the guerrillas in Vietnam was just a matter of few months :->

Editorial Review

General Powell may have undertaken this book as a form of paid political test marketing, but it turns out to be a success of an altogether different kind. We don't learn from this book if Powell is presidential material, but his recounting of the various steps of his career give us an unrivaled view of the ins and outs of military bureaucracy and shows how the modern American military, with its consistent emphasis on can-do attitudes and actual results, is a much more congenial place for realizing one's talents than our still-alarmingly pigeonholing general society. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars thought for the day
I read this sometime after Powell had already become Secretary of State, but before 9/11. At the time I read the book, I thought differently about politics than I do now, and this book had a subtle, but important effect on that change in perspective. It was among the factors that served a deepening in me. I have become less reactive and superficial when it comes to politics. That deepening was served not so much by virtue of what Powell says in this book -- although he does make a number of concrete points which were enlightening to me. It was more as a result of the fact that although he must have written it because he was toying with a bid for the presidency, I sense that he represents himself here pretty faithfully. I could therefore incorporate that feeling about him into my understanding of subsequent events.
5-0 out of 5 stars There must be something about Colin Powell...
There must be something about Colin Powell. All through his career his superiors continually sought him out; and wherever he worked they always wanted him back.
5-0 out of 5 stars Inspirational book
I enjoyed reading "My American Journey" and was thrilled that Colin Powell wrote an excellent, candid and honest autobiography and resisted the temptation to be self-serving. General Colin Powell achieved his remarkable success through merit and despite the various obstacles (which he saw as challenges) such as racism that could have thwarted lessor people.

4-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful pictures
This book is a little pricey, but the photographs inside this coffee-table book are incredible. Not the run of the mill technical photos, some of these came from private collections, showing a slice of life in and around these plants.1-0 out of 5 stars this book stinks
this book is the worst book i have ever seen in my entire life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Photographic history depicted in haunting humbleness
"Picturing the Bomb" by Rachel Fermi (granddaughter of Nobel Laureate and brilliant Physicist, Enrico Fermi) and Esther Samra is a completely fascinating and often haunting photographical documentary which presents the first images of The Manhattan Project. Many of the picturesare gathered from private collections of people who were actuallyparticipating in the secrecy. The book also containsnever-before-published, de-classified military images. And, as a perfectcomplement to the photos, the accompanying text is equally compelling. Forthose who know the horror of the genie, this is a must for your collection. ... Read more
