3-0 out of 5 stars Treasure Now Found
In the book, there are two guys. Their names are Larry Williams, a self made millionaire, and Bob Cornuke, a retired police officer and a former Swat-team member. Larry Williams is also an archaeologist and he hears rumors that the real Mount Sinai (the mountain where god gave Moses the Ten Commandments) is actually in present day Saudia Arabian, on Mount Jabal al Lawz. They want to make sure that they are right, so they actually follow the route on which they believe the Hebrews used to get out of Egypt. After a couple of days, they realize that this must be the way that they took. Every single detail that is in the bible they find. When the get to what they believe is the Reds Sea, They go scuba diving in it. They find the prove that they need and Larry almost gets eaten by a shark.
1-0 out of 5 stars Bad, bad book
This book is written like a 4th-rate children's adventure story. From the spy story to the lead "characters" furtive journey into Saudi Arabia to their diving expedition - it's all so full of hyperbole and exaggeration that the pictures of the book are needed to convince the reader that the trip happened at all.
1-0 out of 5 stars Unlikely tale with no research content
I have the hardest time getting rid of books, and every purge of the family library ends up being a long series of painful decisions. Yet I had no trouble giving away this book after the first reading.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A great resource!
This is a wonderful resource for anyone writing on Saudi Arabia. The book is very easy to read and spellbinding if you're interested in the subject.Van der Meulen starts off with his background and how he ended up in Saudi Arabia. He then goes on to tell of his experiences there, off and on, over a span of almost thirty years. He personally met Ibn Saud as well as Philby, Saud, Faisal, and many others. He saw Arabia grow from tiny villages to large Americanized cities. His analysis of the changing situation is almost ranting at times, but nonetheless accurate. The book includes a small glossary of Arabic terms used and an index. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting --- no axe to grind
I found this book interesting and entertaining -- given the time frame when it was written it is less warped and biased by current events and politics. The Ottoman period is missing. 5-0 out of 5 stars Lesser known history
This history book covers primarily the Islamic Arabian empire, in the period from around 600 AD (the advent of Islam) to around 1500 AD when the last remnants of the empire fell.A few chapters at the beginning and the end address the pre-Islamic Arabs, and also the post empire period through about 1950.I'm pretty sure Professor Hitti is an Arab and a Moslem (though I don't have confirmation), and his perspective is enlightening, though occasionally he comes across as a bit "rah rah".I recommend this book as a good introduction to someone (like me) who doesn't know much about the rise of Islam and the subsequent empire. The book is pretty short so it is something of a summary, but Hitti has a longer work titled "History of the Arabs" which you could move on to.

4-0 out of 5 stars No Contemporary Politics Here
Written in 1943, Hitti's work stands out as scholarship from the days when one could write History about the Arab world. This does not mean that I don't appreciate current analysis; I probably wouldn't be reading books about the Islamic world if not for current history - or perhaps I wouldn't be avoiding them, who knows? But what you will find in Hitti's work is the story of the Arabs as written by someone who's historical axe to grind is apparently no greater than impressing the reader that this is really neat stuff.Read more
