5-0 out of 5 stars If you want toknow what really happen in DS
Mr. Atkinson has written another fine book about todays Army and its 1st real test by combat against Iraq. It is a rich source of information that did not make the screen by CNN. That and the story of the renaissance (rebirth) of the United States Military after the debachle of the post Viet Nam War. A book that is well worth the investment of your time if this is your field of interest.

4-0 out of 5 stars Not a Definitive History, but Compelling
For fifteen years the specter of Vietnam hung over the United States military. After finally devising a way to bow out of the Southeast Asian quagmire with honor, the administration of President Richard M. Nixon was eventually brought down by the scandal of Watergate. Even the failure of its Cold War nemesis, the former Soviet Union, in a similar debacle in Afghanistan, could not dilute the embarrassment of Vietnam in the American consciousness. The invasion of Kuwait by Saddam Hussein's Iraqi forces on 2 August 1990, would give the United States both the opportunity to win a conventional military victory and produce great soldier-heroes such as those that had emerged from more popular wars of the past. That is the underlining thesis of Rick Atkinson's _Crusade: The Untold Story of the Persian Gulf War_. Atkinson argues that aside from the obvious objectives of liberating the Kuwaiti oil fields and protecting America's vital interests in the Middle East, the conflict would produce two important subtle consequences. First it would provide a victory to restore prestige to a military establishment haunted by the ghosts of Vietnam. Second, and more importantly, a victory in the Persian Gulf would provide America with old-fashioned military and political heroes the likes of which had not been seen since the tumultuous parades down New York's Fifth Avenue following Japan's surrender in World War II. The heroes America needed and the media helped to create were General H. Norman Schwarzkopf and President George H.W. Bush. Atkinson portrays Schwarzkopf, arguably the most flamboyant American general since Lt. Gen. George S. Patton Jr., as raging and abusive. Written with a "you are there" approach, the author describes many top-level briefings between Schwarzkopf and his subordinates. A common theme is Schwarzkopf's accusatory bantering that his orders were deliberately disobeyed. Many of these diatribes were aimed at with a great deal of disrespect for U.S. VII Corps commander General Frederick M. Franks. Acknowledging the frustration associated with the burden of command, however, Atkinson concedes that perhaps some of Schwarzkopf's outbursts may have been justifiable. Atkinson initially portrays Bush as an "extraordinary commander." The author credits Bush's campaign to gain support of the American people by demoralizing the militaristic regime of Saddam Hussein as brilliant. Atkinson illustrates how Bush's hero status quickly diminished, however, when the president ended the war prematurely allowing the Iraqi forces to escape and failed to remove Saddam Hussein from power. Utilizing his highly regarded journalistic talent, sprinkled with a sampling of sensationalism, Atkinson examines nearly every controversy of the war. These topics include: the high degree of fratricide among U.S. Service personnel, the reasons for faulty U.S. Intelligence reports that habitually overestimated enemy strength, and the many questions surrounding just how effective were "Smart Bombs." Atkinson also delves into inter-service rivalries, particularly between the Air Force and the Army. He suggests the two services inflated their own roles concerning the conduct of the war. According to Atkinson, this over glamorizing was done in an effort to highlight the importance of their respective services in order to gain the appropriate postwar funding and budgets. The author was privy to certain principal sources during the course of his research. Some documents were declassified just for the purpose of writing of this book through the Freedom of Information Act. The author also was allowed access to the unpublished manuscript of the Official U.S. History of the Persian Gulf War. This is not the definitive history of the first Persian Gulf War, but Atkinson's spin on important issues makes for a compelling read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exciting And Well Written
I am ashamed to admit that this excellent book sat on my bookshelf for a number of years while I read untold numbers of lesser books.I had heard it was a good book, which was the reason I purchased it, and it turns out that everything positive that lead me to buy the book was in fact true. The first thing that stood out for me was that this author is very good at his craft.I almost forgot I was reading a non fiction book at times because his writing style provided the excitement and richly detailed descriptions that you would normally associate with a fiction book. The author details the Gulf War in such a way that almost exclusively focuses on the actual war and not the lead up to the combat nor the political efforts that played out.He does touch on some political aspects, but only when they are needed to augment the readers understanding of what was happening in the war theater.

5-0 out of 5 stars Riviting
After reading all of Jean Sasson's other books (including her most famous "Princess") I was very glad to pick up, "The Rape of Kuwait." This is Jean's first book. The author describes how the Desert Storm affected the Kuwaiti people. It's atrocious, and very said in some parts, but also a riveting tale that should be told. I could not put this book down.
5-0 out of 5 stars Author Amazed me more than the story
This was clearly a quickly written book, but gave good details. The suffering endured by the Kuwaitis reminds me to be relieved that Saddam Hussein is no longer in power! But, what caught my interest the most was the author's knack for traveling alone throughout the Middle East. It's not unusual for tough male reporters to do that, but for a southern female, someone who is not even a reporter, to travel with such abandon is simply amazing.I was struck more than once by her bravery. Not only that, Jean Sasson seemed to be able to interview whomever she pleased, from the highest ranking Kuwaiti official to the ordinary citizens.I'd like to read this author's personal story myself. Is there such a book?If so, I would buy it.

5-0 out of 5 stars Admire the Author
I know this author, Jean Sasson, from her PRINCESS Trilogy, and from her last book, ESTER'S CHILD.I had a difficult time finding this book, but was not disappointed with a second-hand copy.Although the book is obviously written in a hurry due to the situation at the time, and certainly not up to the quality writing of her last 4 books, you can tell that Jean Sasson cares passionately about these human beings and wants their stories to be told.I was surprised at her ability to interview so many high-ranking government officials but after reading her bio and seeing that she lived for 12 years in Arabia, I realized that she probably knows the "ins and outs" of the area. For certain, she is one brave lady and does not seem to concern herself with her own safety.Admittedly, she does seem to try and please everyone just a tad much, but I wonder if that is her Southern background--friendly and warm.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A very entertaining book about the Gulf War
From my point of view, this is a very entertaining book about the Gulf War. The author share with us the life at the battle field on the gorund & up in the air flying. The author said all about what he & his team mates do when not flying any mission & this was really entertaining & fun. Further more, the most interesting part is about the missions that the author flew which most of them are bombing mission & telling us the danger that they faced & the enjoyment after hitting their targets. Actually, this book is just like the dairy of the author, telling us everything he had been doing during the Gulf War. Although there isn't any air to air combat, it's still very interesting because of the amazing bombing missions that he & his team mates flew together. Further more, they were using the FLIR(Forward looking infra-red) pod to find there targets in the dark. The author is flying the F/A-18A Hornet from VMFA-451 Worlords at that time. They were also join by others Marines fighter squadrons too & have been working together during the war. Surprisingly, the Marines perform more strike missions than the Navy did & that's very impressing. I may have said a lot of interesting stuff but you'll have to read it to find out for yourself & I'm sure whoever bought this book will enjoy it a lot, just like I did. You just got to read this book & that's all I can say.

3-0 out of 5 stars A book for backyards BBQ
Take a sunny 4th of July, hamburgers grilling inthe backyard, a cold beer at hand. You sit downand chew the fat with a man who flew Hornets for the Marines during the Gulf war. He tells you hisstories from ananecdotic point of view.Put that chat into a book and you get"Hornetsover Kuwait". It does not put you "in the cockpit", not lay any literary claim. It doseleave you though withthe pleasant feeling of a friendly Holiday chat.

4-0 out of 5 stars An easy read, on the F18.
Its not a pretentious book, and its not a complete history of the region, but it gives a good feel for the problems and solutions faced by the F18 Hornets during the Gulf War. It illustrates everything that has to go on,to make the package work. Very good on tactics. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Good
This book at times was boring, but it is kind of meant to be that way. It's a book on war gaming leading up to the liberation of Kuwait, the politics of how the first Bush administration heroicly gathered a large coalition, the tactics, and execution for victory! It is still worth the read even if your not into military weapons and technology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and insightful
This book gives a thorough explanation of the troops and equipment used during the Persian Gulf War and the build up to the war. The authors dig to find the most accurate numbers. Also give expert analysis on the Iraqi army and coalition forces in terms of diplomacy and experience. Also good background on the history of the region. I give the book an A. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Instructive thoughts from a top logistician
General Pagonis has written a very informative book about his experience in the 1990-91 Gulf War with an emphasis on the lessons that the civilian bussiness sector can derive from it. Without a doubt he was a most capable officer for the job he undertook and his on the spot promotion to Lt General proved the great value of his work. The best parts of the book were those where Pagonis came close to General Shwarzkopf, either to receive laconic instructions or to guarantee that everything will be ready on time for the great outflanking maneuver he planned. Pagonis is a living example of what Greeks can achieve when they work inside a meritocracy system, open to talents like the american model (the complete opposite of what Greek political system encourages in our country in the last decades), and he gives many tips for the military and civilian logistician, like the stand-up morning meetings, the use of the 3X5 cards for the flow of information, the "ghostbusters" idea of mobile problem solvers, the great value of the vision in the leader's mind and how it can be materialised in the lower echelons and many more. Although I would like to learn more about the myriad details of army logistics, I understand that Pagonis' target was not to drawn his readers into the sea of information he handled but to outline the principles of his command and management style. I would recommend reading Douglas Menarchik's excellent "Powerlift" as a more data heavy companion to Pagonis' book.

4-0 out of 5 stars Easy to read and understand
Anyone interested in buying this book must understand two things up front:3-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating read on moving things around the world
This truly is a fascinating account of just how the United States military was able to move 500,000 troops and all their equipment halfwar across the world, fight a war, and then bring it all home. The numbers and statistics of the effort are truly stunning.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Duty and Honor
I listened to this book in audio first, and I liked it so much I bought the printed book too. Stormjammers is a bitingly honest assessment of Stanek's experiences during first Gulf War. The prose is clear, candid, and vivid and provides a gut-wrenching, hands-sweating, feel for life as a military flyer and what it's like to engage in aerial combat. Stanek will take you through his first thoughts on the buildup in Iraq. You will ride along as the war unfolds, sharing his pain as he takes you into places few others have ever written about so well: modern aerial warfare. You will feel the rush of emotion when you ask yourself if you could make the decisions he made and you'll tear up when you finish the book and realize that young men like Stanek will never have a peaceful rest as long as their is terror and evil in the world.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Former Soldier's Opinion
Stanek's memoir "Stormjammers" is a first-hand account of training and engagements in Iraq. It is refreshingly clean of anti-war or pro-war bias. I found the entire volume well-written and fast reading. Stanek leaves the larger debates about the war to others, and concentrates on depicting the confusion, frustration, readiness, service and heroism. Such descriptions have been missing in the mass media coverage of the war.
5-0 out of 5 stars A brilliantly crafted, deeply touching and extraordinary read.
Stormjammers is a beautifully written and deeply personal look at one man's transformation from a young flyer to a hardened combat veteran and ultimately to a warrior irrevocably changed by his experiences. It's also the highest tribute to the men and women he served with.

4-0 out of 5 stars A great place to start
In order to have a good grasp on what's happening in Iraq today, an understanding of the war in 1991 is essential. There's a fair amount of literature on the "first" gulf war, but Finlan's book would be a great place to start if you're not already familiar with the subject.

I will not write a detailed review, suffice to say I agree with the other 5-star ratings already written and highly recommend this book. Very well written and keeps your interest throughout. I enjoyed the narrative from cover to cover and it gave a great insight into the "mentality" of the middle east and what we continue to be up against in that region (with friend and foe). I'm glad he was able to survive, put it together in a book and not be just another untold story. ... Read more

Editorial Review

The swift onset of the Persian Gulf War took many observers (and many television viewers) by surprise. It had, historians Khadduri and Ghareeb note, been a long time coming, however. Kuwait had been artificially severed from Iraq at the end of British colonial rule in 1921, and Iraq had long been seeking access to Kuwaiti ports on the Gulf that, had it been granted, might have forestalled war. Carefully tracing the history of the 1990-91 conflict, the authors suggest that Saddam Hussein's invasion of Kuwait followed a certain logic, but not an inevitable one, and that the Allied powers perhaps should have waited for a peaceful Iraqi withdrawal. Theirs is a controversial reading of history, but one that merits an audience. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars For anyone studying the Mid East, this is a must read.
The book paints a full picture of the historical dispute between Iraq and Kuwait, which basically started in 1899 when the Kuwaiti royal family made secret deals with the British. It carefully goes over the personalities involved and how they tried to shape the situation. The reading can get slow at times if the reader is unaccustomed to the various spellings of Arabic names and locations, i.e. Husayn = Hussein, Makkah = Mecca. However, the information provided gives a clear insight to the logic of the Iraqi invasion of 1990 and subsequent Operation Desert Storm in 1991.Whether or not one agrees with the conclusions of the authors, it definitely is a wealth of information on the subject. This is a must read for all interested in Mid East politics. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars Useful study but not detailed enough for a reference book.
Presenting a background to the roots of the Middle East conflict with any degree of clarity and brevity is no mean achievement. Yet in some 130 pages that is exactly what the author has to some extent achieved here.1-0 out of 5 stars "The blood of the moon!"
'The blood of the moon'the author purports to have taken this title from a verse of the Quran, which, according to him, is the 112th verse of the 9th chapter. In fact, this phrase does not occur anywhere in the Quran. The first part of George Grants misquotation resembles the 111th verse of the 9th chapter. The actual translation of this verse is: Verily, Allah has bought from the believers their lives and their properties for (the price) that theirs shall be the Paradise. They fight in Allahs Cause, and slay and are slain. It is a promise which is binding on Him in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur'an. And who is truer to his covenant than Allah? Rejoice then in the bargain which you have concluded, for that is the supreme success.5-0 out of 5 stars a good beginning for understanding our world today
This is an excellent book to aid in an understandingof the threat of terrorism and the ongoing crisis in the middle East. George Grant compares the Christian worldview as opposed to the Muslim beliefs. Where the divergence came from and where it seems to be leading us. Very readable and interesting book. One you will want to share with many friends. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Introduction Available
This is the best introduction available on the Gulf states, examining such critical themes as the British imperial legacy and the relationship between state, economy, and social classes. It certainly offers a non-Orientalist treatment and avoids the condescending and often bigoted discourse adopted by such colonial-minded writers as J.B. Kelly. The late Said-Zahlan had a full mastery of the British archives and extensive knowledge of the region. This is reflected in this valuable and concise introductory work.
1-0 out of 5 stars A dry and uncritical introduction
Zahlan covers the history of the Gulf states with special emphasis on the history of the various monarchical families. Sadly, her attitude is unflinchingly fawning; she seems afraid to say one negative thing aboutthese countries and their economic and political challenges. As well, thewriting style is very dry and wooden. Her bias is symbolized by one of themaps showing the UAE as extending westward all the way to Dawhat as Salwa,at the southwest base of Qatar. This reflects absurdly ambitiousterritorial claims of the UAE at a time when the Saudis have claimed thecoast in the vicinity of Khawr Duwayhin, southeast of Qatar. This map isemblematic of the book's flaws. A much better book despite its age (1980)is 'Arabia, the Gulf, & the West' by J.B. Kelly. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Well described, paints a good picture of 'being there'
I met Alex Vernon on the job, but I haven't served or anything. He was a tough fellow, very intelligent. Not all balls-to-the-walls gung ho or anything.
1-0 out of 5 stars Duty, Honor, Country
I heartily concur with Dr. Forczyk's outstanding review of this volume. He is right on the money. There is little I can add to his criticisms of it. I am disappointed in the attitudes displayed by the authors, however, as four of them are graduates of the United States Military Academy at West Point, as I am, and it appears to me that these gentleman missed out on some of the outstanding leadership instruction given at the Academy, or, if they were present, they appear to have ignored it.

4-0 out of 5 stars An engaging read
"Yes I Can" by Loretta Scott is a very visceral read. Loretta is a very descriptive writer and her narrative draws you in, making you feel as if you were there with her amongst all her experiences. This account of her journey to the Middle East to serve in the Gulf War, her experiences there, and her return to civilian life, intimately details the journey of the human spirit forever seeking a higher reality as an anchor amongst the chaos that is War and the uncertainties that making a life can present.Indeed empowering material.

5-0 out of 5 stars Love and Terror in Desert Storm
I found it hard to read much of what Cliff Acree wrote, because he tells us how badly he was treated while he was in captivity. He was tortured; badly beaten, denied food and in so many ways humiliated and ill-treated. Still, he never lost his faith and dignity.
5-0 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST POW/WAR STORIES
I have read many POW stories since WWII and this is one of the best. The perspective is a little different as the wife talks a chapter about what is going on at home and then Col. Acree talks about his ordeal while a prisoner of war in Iraq during Desert Storm. The internal fortitude and resolve of Co. Acree is astounding and what he went through is heart rending. At the same time his wife did much in creating a force of help and an attitude of compassion among the entire citizenry of the U.S.A.You will rally 'round the flag after reading this and appreciate the downfall of Hussein!

5-0 out of 5 stars An honest review from a grateful reader
When I first bought this book, I thought it would be something I MIGHT pick up and read...if I didn't have something better to do. Being a new Marine spouse in a post-9/11 world, the story was, at least, an intriguing one, and any new information I could get was a bonus. I had NO idea what was in store.Read more
