5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful - if you can find a copy.
I waited for some time to get my hands on this work. If you're interested in AE faience artistry - the pictures alone are worth it. A fine addition to the Egyptophile's library.

5-0 out of 5 stars Simply lovely!
The beautiful photographs of the belle epoque buildings of Cairo fairly jump off the pages at you. This lovely, understated book should be a guide for architecture and restoration students and buffs. This is a great gift book for the right people.

5-0 out of 5 stars "...an unabashed visual love letter..."
From the Egyptian Press: "[Myntti's] photographs...overflow with her love of Cairo, so the photos have become more beautiful than professional photos, because it was the heart that recorded not the fixed lens thatcannot feel the pulse." (Hussam Abd Rabbu, Akhir Saat.)"TheFrench architecture of the late Nineteenth and early Twentieth Centuriesmakes up one of the most charming of Cairo's harlequin faces.... This erahas left a strikingly beautiful imprint on the citscape. Myntti's zoom lensoffers a graceful catalogue." (Francis Bickmore, Egypt's Insight.)"In its global significance and cosmopolitan sophistication, Cairo wasnot merely a copy of Paris, it was more than Paris. The book inivtes one to'promenade' and also to protect these neglected treasures." (BrunoRonfard, Al-Ahram Hebdo.) ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars some interesting and fun facts
This book taught me a bit about ancient Judaism and how gentiles related to it. I didn't know, for example, that there was an Egyptian spin on the Exodus (that the Jews were Egyptian "undesirables" who were driven out because the other Egyptians couldn't stand them); just knowing this proves that SOMETHING happened between the Jews and Egyptians 2300 years ago. I also enjoyed reading about what the Romans thought of the Jews (surprisingly favorable, despite the ugliness of the Imperial response to Jewish rebellions).

4-0 out of 5 stars No student of this topic
This is the first time I've read any text on this topic, so I'm no scholaron the subject. The book is written in formal, but accessible language. ((I admit with chagrin that I was 3/4 of the way through the text before Irealized that when the author said that "Jews proscribed intercoursewith non-Jews" he meant SOCIAL intercourse! It gave a slightlydifferent sense on the second read!)) I found it a good, though somewhatdry read, and especially enjoyed the insights offered by the author'scomparison of several ancient cultures and the re-introduction to ancientphilosophers whose names are better known for their contributions towestern culture than for their attitudes toward Jews. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Akhenaten Worshipper of the Sun.Indeed, no.
Amenhotep, later Pharaoh Akhenaten, has been called a "worshipper of the sun" by a recent reviewer.Surely he was not. National Geographic (April 2001) quotes him as saying: "Oh living Aten, who initiates life.... Oh, sole god, without another beside him! You create the Earth according to your wish.... You are in my heart, and there is none who knows you except your son." It is said that he spoke these words as the Sun rose.1-0 out of 5 stars PURE VENOM!!
I am sorry but as a decent and self respecting human being, (and to put it nicely, too), I am permenantly allergic to this book. Akhenaten is my absolute hero and I don't know where these peoplewho detract from him including in this work think they'll get off taking untruthful and cheap shots at him. Obviously, they are afraid to look further into the sheer beauty and kindness which radiates from both him and his brilliant poetry. I think that if they decided to open their minds and look further, they would suddenly see the startling lovliness of this man. But this book is just cruel far beyond the edge of decency, though this author obviously isn't stupid, as he projects onto so many other fine people. I give it one star only because there isn't a zero, so this is the lowest.

4-0 out of 5 stars informative book about Akhenaten
The author portrays Akhenaten more as an atheist than a monotheist. A striking portrait is an outline of this fascinating 'worshiper of the sun', who is also one of the best known pharaohs. A good overview is provided ofthe Akhenaten Temple Project. Some of the author's comments are amusingwhich makes the book more enjoyable especially through the 'dry' moments. The book contains a short glossary, suggested readings, and many black andwhite illustrations and drawings. It is recommended for the open-minded layperson. ... Read more

Finally, a book that doesn't insult the history of the ancient Egyptians or humanity as a whole by postulating silly theories about alien space men or fantastic cosmic generators for the lost race from planet x.I think Schock has presented a great piece of exploratory and fact-based Egyptology that will make the Hancocks, Bauvals and Hawas' turn their heads in notice. The Appendices are worth the price of the book alone. Not as good as 'Voices of the Rocks' but well worth the read if you're a fan of hermetic philosophy ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Well presented and full of facts.
The book is large and full of portraits from diferent sites in Egypt, not only the Fayum, which are not always included in other books. It contains several articles from diferent specialists conserning the history, techniques, archaeological facts and findings as well as the dating of these objects, which are very usefull and enlightening.Three fourth's of the book presents the portraits themselves and the study cases of each one of them. Unfortunetly, the portraits are not always full length page and all are placed on a white background. In this respect, the book by Berenice Geoffory-Schneiter, Fayum, is superior. Nevertheless, the book is nicely presented and a good basic book for those interest in the study of this fascinating cultural expression.

5-0 out of 5 stars excellent exhibition catalog
A companion to an exhibition taking place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, this book presents colored panel and shroud portraits of Roman Egypt. Contributors, including R. Bagnall, M. Bierbrier, K. Gschwantler, J. Taylor and S. Walker, give a concise acccount of mummy portraits and their discovery, as well as the Fayum and its people. Extensively illustrated in color, this is a useful book covering a little-known subject. An excellent reference for everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars Incredible documentation of topic, plates not true to color
This exhibition is a facinating personal document of the Roman mummy portraits and their Egyptian and greek influenced hybrid artworks. The incredible freshness of the works themselves is lost in the printing here.Perhaps the encaustic is difficult to photograph? Anyway the topic and textis wonderful, but the images pale next to the 1st person experience ofthese vital energizing works of the Roman era.A good book to own, if yousaw the show it's better. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Informative and Entertaining
This is a well-written book with excellent photographs. This book presents the results of conservation efforts for medieval age Christian Egyptian, Coptic, wall paintings at Saint Anthony monastery, Egypt. The monastery is believed to be the first Christian monastery in the world. In the preface, the writers outlined the genesis of this conservation effort. They also provided progress photographs for some of the early and limited test cleaning work that showed the promising and extraordinary work of art that was underneath centuries of grime and over painting. The preservation and restoration efforts were funded by a grant from the United States Agency for International Aid (USAID). Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The life story of a truly unique leader
Written by the late British historian Stanley Lane-Pools (1854-1931), Saladin: All-powerful Sultan And The Uniter Of Islam is an informed and informative biography of the great warrior, statesman, and faithful believer in Islam, Salah ad-Din ibn Ayyub, more commonly known as Saladin (A.D. 1138-1193). From his early years in a Kurdish military family to the beginning of his military service at age fourteen, to his conquest of Jerusalem marked by an unprecedentedly humane treatment of the citizens within, to his belief and application of civilized justice, Saladin: All-powerful Sultan And The Uniter Of Islam is the life story of a truly unique leader who deservedly earned his legendary status both in the West as well as throughout Islam. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars K Shea
Solar flares are the reason behind all our problems and the the world can only be saved by mathamaticians. Aside from the usual "Hey look Mom, I figured out the meaning of the pyramids" stuff that seems to be in all of these esoteric books there is a smacking of truth in amongst all the those calculations. It may not be enough to support some of the theories put forward by Mr. Cotterell but it is certainly food for thought. If you don't mind wading through the math, there are at least 144,000 seperate calculations, then I would reccommend the reading.

3-0 out of 5 stars The tutankhamon speculations.
The book starts with a short introduction of previous work the author has done regarding the Mayan culture. As he explains, he cracked a secret code the Mayans used to leave messages to future finders. The code involved a jade mask and a lid of a sarcophagus. The author discovered that when one projects images of these mirror onto itself, new pictures form. He presents the readers with his ideas regarding these images and the explanation thereof. 5-0 out of 5 stars Completely Awesome!

4-0 out of 5 stars As reviewed by an Air War College student
In The Albatross of Decisive Victory, George Gawrych critically analyzed the conflict between Egypt and Israel during the period from 1967 to 1973 from within the context of policy, military strategy, and operational effectiveness. His overarching aim was to correlate Israel's decisive victory in the Six Day War of 1967 to Egyptian policy which culminated in the Arab-Israeli War of 1973.The thesis of his book is that Israel's hubris after her decisive victory in 1967 set conditions that a humiliated Egypt successfully exploited in the subsequent war of 1973.Gawrych presented a compelling, detailed, and well-organized argument to support his thesis.

3-0 out of 5 stars excellent supplement
An excellent supplement to a course on Egyptian history, it should be used with a more politically focused book or by an instructor who likes to spend hours going through the rulers and the major political/military events. The book does concentrate on a few periods in Egyptian history, but thenthe evidence does not allow for much detail. Written in a fairly clearmanner, a good instructor will find it useful and students will find manysections of it more interesting than the lists of pharoahs. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Mysterious World Recommended Book
Alexandria: The Sunken City is an top-quality photographic essay of Jean-Yves Empereur's 1995 underwater expedition off the coast of Alexandria, Egypt. There, Empereur and crew found a gold mine of archaeological artifacts, including massive stone sculptures, pillars covered with Egyptian hieroglyphics, and even numerous sphinxes. This now-submerged part of ancient Egyptian history is considered to be one of the greatest archaeological finds of the twentieth century, and Alexandria: The Sunken City covers the subject well in a simply written, lavishly illustrated coffee-table-sized book that is a must have for anyone interested in underwater archaeology, Egyptology, the ancient history of the Mediterranean, and related disciplines.

5-0 out of 5 stars AN AMAZING ACHIEVEMENT
I have seriously studied ancient history and archeology for over thirty years. I have rarely come upon a book in the field that compares with ALEXANDRIA: THE SUNKEN CITY in combining visual pleasure and intellectual illumination with literary brilliance and grace. This book is an amazing achievement.

1-0 out of 5 stars A breathlessly silly book, but some good photographs
Many of the underwater photographs are interesting, and some make a great impression, but the text of this book is of the lowest order -- silly, gabbling, breathless, not at all as if by an informed and serious writer. No stars for the author.Nor for the editors and publishers who went fortrash when they should have aimed for gold. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Rohl's Saul/David section is the clincher
Rohl takes us on a fascinating journey through the worlds of biblical and egyptian archeology and chronology.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE challenge
For the advanced scholar, especially if you want to draw parallels between ancient Egypt and Christinity...........unfortunately Rohls findings have mostly been refuted in the past five years........nothing like it though to challenge the historic belief of timelines in the middle and new kingdom.....

4-0 out of 5 stars Great Book for Its Time:It Is About Time
