5-0 out of 5 stars US-Middle East relations: 1945-current
Peter L. Hahn's CRISIS AND CROSSFIRE: THE UNITED STATES AND THE MIDDLE EAST SINCE 1945 joins the 'Issues in the History of American Foreign Relations' studies in examining the history of U.S. encounters with the Middle East since 1945. Primary-source documents serve as the foundation of a survey of intentions, politics, diplomacy, and underlying influences on encounters in a text perfect for classroom adaptation. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An.McCracken is a fake. REPORT THIS

4-0 out of 5 stars Robert Schoch, brings forth the idea of a fabled missing link of archaeology.
Robert Schoch, brings forth the idea of a fabled missing link of archaeology--a 'mother city,' in his book, Voyages of the Pyramid Builders. If he's right, then these extraordinary findings could finally answer one of the great questions of archaeology: why did humans become civilized? For over a century, archaeologists have been searching for what they call a mother city. Civilization began in only six areas of the world: Egypt, Mesopotamia, India, China, Peru and Central America. In each of these regions people moved from small family units to build cities of thousands of people. They crossed the historic divide, one of the great moments in human history. Why? To find the answer archaeologists needed to find a mother city--the first stage of city-building. They couldn't find one anywhere. Everywhere this first stage seemed destroyed or built over. And so, instead, scientists developed a number of theories. Some said it was because of the development of trade, others that it was irrigation. Some even today believe it was all because of aliens. Gradually an uneasy consensus emerged. The key force common to all civilizations was warfare. The theory was that only the fear of war could motivate people to give up the simple life and form complex societies.
3-0 out of 5 stars Recommended with reservations
Contrary to other reviewers, I found the book to be relatively well written and organized.True, there isn't much new/revolutionary information presented in the book and there are even a few question marks, but overall it is a very interesting book to read.On the downside, the author presents an absolute pile of data to prove his point and, in doing so, assumes the reader knows (or can remember) where all the places that he mentions are actually located, when and by whom they were built, and what they looked like.

2-0 out of 5 stars Not really worth it - A Priestess Of Isis
I was really excited about ordering this book, but when it came i was dissapointed before i opened it. It was this tiny, skinny little package. I opened it and read it in about an hour. It has bits and pieces of useful and NON-redundant information but not worth the almost thirty dollars. What a rip off.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Magical Book at last!
Like with many of David Rankine's books this book has a practical and straight to the point feel about it.It doesn't try and convince you that it is a great book, but that is exactly what makes it fantastic.

3-0 out of 5 stars Cool pictures in this book
Text book Egyption history is what you like get this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars A first-rate popular synthesis--surprisingly uncontroversial
Like many of Mr. Johnson's admirers, I can just barely see how he manages to read so much. But how he is able to write so much on top of that--incredible.Now he has turned his attention to ancient Egypt.Because this is a dead civilization, there is not much occasion here forpolitical controversy, and so some of Mr. Johnson's fans may miss hispungent polemics. They needn't.He has compiled an largely satisfyingpopular account of the land of the pharaohs, which also leaves the readercurious to read more deeply.4-0 out of 5 stars Think Like An (Ancient) Egyptian
I just came off of reading another book by Paul Johnson, "A History Of The American People", so this was quite a switch! Once again, Mr. Johnson has impressed me with his erudition and pleased me with his smoothstyle. Right up front, let me say that I was as ignorant as you can getconcerning this subject before I read this book, so my knowledge level hadnowhere to go but up! If you already know a lot about this subject you maynot find this book worthwhile. That being said, if you don't know muchabout ancient Egypt this book is a good starting point. Mr. Johnson givesyou some actual history as far as talking of events and dynasties, etc. butthe majority of the book deals with the religious beliefs of the Egyptiansand their art, and how the two were intimately connected. There is also anexcellent chapter on hieroglyphs. One of the strong suits of the book ishow it gets you into the mind of the ancient Egyptians and you start to seethings the way they might have. Mr. Johnson explains such things as why, onwall paintings, people were shown in profile rather than giving us afrontal view and why the Egyptian artist intentionally chose not to useaerial perspective. (Sorry, you'll have to read the book to find out!)Suffice it to say, when you look at things after knowing what the Egyptiansbelieved you will be able to appreciate their achievements all the more. The book is also useful in showing the link between Egyptian art andreligion and what came later (Greek and Roman culture; Christianity;Judaism, etc.) Highly recommended! ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Egyptians Speak a Language they do not Respect and Respect a langauge they do not speak
Niloofar Haeri is an Iranian American; she studied Arabic Language in the USA and went to Egypt to further her studies. On arrival she realized that the language she learnt "modern Arabic" is very different from the language spoken by the Egyptians. The difference was more than just accent or dialect; it was far more fundamental than that. Haeri set out studying the Egyptian "Arabic" language in great detail and studying its role in the society.
5-0 out of 5 stars Spoken Arabic: The Sacred and Profane
This is a very intelligent book about a topic that has been plaguing Arabic philoloigists and thinkers. How do you modernize a language that is considered sacred? Is there a difference between the modern Classic Arabic and the Quran's Classic Arabic? What are people's attitudes towards Classical Arabic? Perhaps one of the best passages in this study is when an Egyptian would explain the ease and the relaxed state of mind he is in upon hearing or reading the Quran (which is written in Classical Arabic), yet at the same time would describe the same language as "diffcult", and a burdan to write and communicate in within other spheres. Other topics explore the efforts made to transfer a sacred language into print and media and how it defines social heirarchies within Egyptian society. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Book
This is a very interesting book. Who could do a better job then Carter at writing a book on King Tutankhamen. I only wish they could have added a few more pictures of the beautiful treasures in the tomb.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of my favorite books
I have a beloved hard copy that I've owned since sophomore year of high school when I learned about Howard Carter and Tutankhamen in A.P. History class. I was hooked and had to learn more. I've read that the first edition was actually two volumes but I haven't ever come across any copies yet.

5-0 out of 5 stars Mitchell continues to innovate
Timothy Mitchell writes consistently on the Middle East in ways that challenge the presupposition of field. This book is a collection and revision of many studies previously published, but they are integrated into a whole to provide insights into new ways to consider. The conclusions thereof are wide-ranging, highlighting the falsification and fallacies of behind the reasoned application of universalized logics capital and techno-politics to Egyptian particularities.5-0 out of 5 stars Thoughtful and envigorating
Mitchell's "Colonising Egypt" transformed my experience as a student in Egypt, so I was looking forward to this work from one of the best minds in in Middle East Studies."Rule of Experts: Egypt, Techno-Politics, Modernity" does not disappoint.Mitchell's work is self-reflective, de-orientalized, thought-provoking scholarship.Mitchell not only connects contemporary political and postmodern theory to his Egyptian primary sources, but he extends theory in new directions and unique interdisiplinary ways.Mitchell empowers the reader to think critically about the negative influences of power and hegemonic discourse on policy and scholarship to create distorted representations and self-fulfilling, self-replicating prophecies. We need more writers like Mitchell to question and challenge the currenttheory and expertise that has so much currency and momentum in the echo chambers of the Washington Consensus.

1-0 out of 5 stars Well written???
Reading the other reviews, I cannot help but shake my head in astonishment...."Well Written"???Ideas move in and out of paragraphs with no real logical flow of ideas.Few dates are presented to help the reader follow the timetable (which is likely because the scenes are re-sequenced for dramatic effect).I am an avid reader of literature, but found myself constantly rereading passages to try and decipher the idea being presented or the scene being described.I finally decided that the editor either gave up or never tried.Much of the book reads more like a stream of consciousness than a documentation of events witnessed by the author.1-0 out of 5 stars How can he type with a massive chip on his shoulder?
This is a book for people who hate Starbucks and complain incessantly about gentrification (while drinking expensive boutique coffee and loving the appreciation in their real estate). After reading half of it I got tired of the constant pot-shots and nasty, one-sided characterizations and had to put it down.5-0 out of 5 stars Sometimes the Truth Hurts
As a Napa resident and former winemaker, I can say that this book truly pulls back the curtains to expose the overinflated egos that are rapidly transforming our valley into just another trendy, overpriced tourist trap.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Royal Genealogy of Ancient Egypt
This book is the most complete reference of royal genealogy in Ancient Egypt that I have ever come across. I did not expect so much detail about royals who lived thousands of years ago.
4-0 out of 5 stars Aidan Dodson does it again!
Yet again Thames and Hudson's series `The Complete' comes up with a winner. Royal Families starts with an outline of the Ancient Egyptian Pharaonic State and the set up of the royal family then goes on to list over 1.300 Kings their known Queens and off springs. Royal Families is laid out in an easy to follow, dynasty-by-dynasty fashion with sections on the family tree, historical information and a fascinating section called `Brief Lives'. This later section is a who's who of all the known players on the Ancient Egyptian Royal Families stage. All in all it's an extremely interesting read suitable for academics and armchair historians alike, but then with Aidan Dodson's involvement what else would you expect. ... Read more
