This book is well researched and presented in very graphic detail.I am indebted to Dr. Ben-Jochanan for his deliberation.
5-0 out of 5 stars New Beginnings for Some
How do you do justice to a long time scholar in a review, who has used time, physical energy, money, intellectual power to bring to the forefront, extraordinary revelations based on extensive research...review candidly...Black Man of the Nile is an exceptional multi paged document put together by an exceptional person.Travelling the world, the author has used little known/rare resources to get at the truth. This historical assembly of information, is based on rare findings in kemetology/egyptology/archeaology, that remarkably differs from the standard and accepted versions of events, ie..people, places, eras in this ancient northeast land.A monumental achievement, a good and funny read....If you expect to read the usual historical mythology, don't bother reading this, otherwise enjoy.

Editorial Review

The Fayum, a flourishing metropolitan community in ancient Egypt, consisted of Greeks, Egyptians, Syrians, Libyans, and others. Like many of their contemporaries throughout the Nile Valley, these people embalmed their dead and then painted commemorative portraits of them, usually on wood or linen, to be placed over the mummies. Looking into the well-preserved, startlingly lifelike faces collected in this beautiful volume, one can trace the earliest roots of portraiture as it began in these Greco-Roman Fayum, or mummy, portraits, and continued through the Renaissance to the present. Despite their ancient history, the stylized portraits appear strikingly modern and painterly, with echoes of Modigliani and Matisse. Having experimented with them herself, Euphrosyne Doxiadis describes in detail the painting techniques and materials. Also included are fascinating notes on the clothing, jewelry, and hairstyles of the period. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars this is MY Favorite book!
I checked this book out from the library so many times, that noone else got to read it. If you are an artist or someone who wants to work with past lives, or a novelist, this is the book for you.
5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful art book on the first great portrait painters.
This is a beautiful book for anyone interested in Hellenistic Greek or Roman painting or portraits from any time. These are the first portraits in which the subjects look directly at us as we regard them. They are ahaunting glimpse into the lives of people dead for 2000 years. This book isfull of big color illustrations. Doxiadis does a fine job of tracing thehistory of the discovery, theories about, and conservation of these images. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars dated , interesting, but overcome by recent events
In many ways the examination of the founding of the Brotherhood is a parallel to the founding of Islam itself. What Mohammed actually said about many issues will never really be known since the Koran as we know it today was not written for many decades and even centuries after his death. al-Bannah and the founding of the Brotherhood did not have the problem of contemporaneous recording of what he said, but it most certainly had the problem of what he really meant since there were many who had their own views of what he meant, and became prophets in their own right. Qutb's idiotic rantings in "Milestones" are really an expansion of al-Banna's preachings. It is really almost irrelevant as to who was Socrates or Plato in this relationship since they both rejected modernity in the search for "true Islam". Admittedly the socialist governments in Egypt provided a fertile feeding ground for a demand to return to the "roots" of Islam, even before the British were kicked out, but what the various players in the founding of the Muslim Brothers really intended is as irrelevant as what Marx and Engle's wanted Communism to be; it became what it became, a blight on humanity. From a historical perspective, this is an interesting book since it introduces many of the founding players of the Brotherhood to us. From the perspective of what the Brotherhood has become, and what it has started, it is not really very good since Qutb and his followers such as bin Laden have made it the modern-day equivalent of Nazism, regardless of its original intent. Admittedly Mitchell would not know what the movement would become writing 35 years ago, but it was pretty easy to see where it was headed, and it was much more insidious than Mitchell reports. This is a book worth reading, but it should be done as a companion to many others which have been written since.

5-0 out of 5 stars First of Its Kind
This work still remains one of the best ever written on modern Islamism; it also happens to be one of the first.John Voll's preface to this reprinted edition is excellent and gives the work its due place in the history of the development of scholarship on Islamism.5-0 out of 5 stars Objective, direct, accurate: Excellent
In The Society of the Muslim Brothers, Richard P. Mitchell addresses the ideology of the organization. He takes the reader from the birth of the movement that would eventually challenge the Egyptian government to it's greatest and worst moments. He writes with an amazingly objective style, neither apologizing for the members who committed crimes, nor minimalizing the excellent social welfare contributions of Hassan Al-Banna, the leader. Of particular interest in this discussion of dualities is the point made about the dual legal systems. Al-Banna felt that the Western laws "corrupted and perverted the nation's thought, mind and logic."Mitchell's point on this seems to hold vivid clarity in the idea that manmade laws and shari'a are innately incompatible. The inharmonious combination of this dual legal system "served to shatter the `unity' of the nation." Mitchell's writing really catches the essence of a group of people struggling to come to terms with a rapidly changing society in flux in a rapidly changing world. His book was translated into Arabic and Arab scholars agree that his portrayal of this politically powerful religious movement is academically sound. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Euro-American falsification of World History...on the way out?
Diop has written a powerful book placing the African civilizations of what is commonly called "Ancient Egypt" at the begining of world history ,where it rightly belong.
1-0 out of 5 stars Fantasies abound
It is a fact that the human race originated in Africa. It is also a fact that civilization originated in the Middle East. So what?

5-0 out of 5 stars Fierce!!!Ten Stars!!!
Anyone who has sat in class and was just bored stiff with the disjointed , disconnected way ofwestern teachingand rote memorization will love this one. This is truly the Missing Link… For those of us who have seenand read historical, allegorical and sci-fi epics such as Anthony and Cleopatra, Ben Hur, Sparticus, Julius Caesar,Lawrence of Arabia, The Ten Commandments, the Matrix, Samson and Delilah, all of the Greek Mythology programs (Jason and the Argonauts, Hercules, Troy)etc., etc., know that there was something missing from these shows, and that if the avoided ingredients were placed correctly into the storylines these movies/programs would have been great, because they would have beencorrect…. Even today if one was to look at the new Sci-fi shows ( Star Wars, Star Trek, Deep Space Nine) andother programs one would see ancientarchitecture, names , languages and places that is not new at all but the ancient future that has been rehashed.!!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Must Read
This book is definately one of the best additions to my library.Dr. Ashby gives a great analysis of the most complex knowledge system known to humankind. Not only does he know what he is talking about, but he is able to transform the wisdom of the ancients into the limited framework of the English language. Very powerful. If one is seeking enlightenment, this book definately provides a step in the right direction.

This book is a classic in a multiplicity of fields; incl.,Kemetic (Egyptian) research, Melanin studies, Yoga techniques,Symbology, Comparative Religions, Esoteric materialism (scientifictechnology behind machinery), and others to numerous to mention.Dr. Muata Ashby is a first rate academician and he is a Masterpractitioner of the Art to boot! This is the most cosmopolitan workyou can find on esoteric/occultic syncretism. Every page is loadedwith diagrams, or sublime research on the esoteric connection aroundthe world of the African Diaspora.Take for example page 8:""THE VEIL OF IGNORANCE- As stated in the ancient Egyptiantext, 'The Book of Coming Forth by Day

5-0 out of 5 stars Very good
Those who tend to disparage the value of this book are doing a disservice to those of us who want to know more about hermeticism and the hermetic tradition and are new comers to this area. Mr. Freke in his introduction clearly states how influential these writings have been. Yes this was written in late antiquity but it incorporates many teachings that would have come from the Mind of Thoth. This book serves as an ideal introductory book for furthur explorations into the hermetic tradition.

5-0 out of 5 stars Frodo
I have this book but haven't read it-yet. Is it any more absurd to rate it 5 stars than one star, not having read it? I had to put something and thought I'd be generous. And "Nothing New" doesn't really put the book down, but feels he/she has to let us all know how erudite he is. Give me a break. Maybe it's a great book for me to start with, being new to that aspect of ancient Egypt.

3-0 out of 5 stars Nothing new
With all the hype surrounding this ancient text in Hermetic circles, I felt it was a "must-read". Maybe I could find some new little nugget of sacred knowledge. I didn't.

1-0 out of 5 stars Turned off by the review.
I was interested in researching this book as I believe that Egypt had an esoteric school at the time of Jesus because it was there that He was nurtured as a child. But the review claims:"Although it is commonly believed that Jesus lived during the first century A.D., there is no concrete evidence to support this fact from the Roman and Jewish historians who would have been his contemporaries."I suggest that the author study the book: "Joshephus The Complete Works" where he will find mention of Jesus by a contemporary Jewish historian.
4-0 out of 5 stars Ahmed Osman Encourages His Readers To Think On Their Own, A Rarity In The World Of Authors!
I have just recently become a fan of author Osman. While some of his theories are out there, I have been intriged and amazed at both the time and research that he has put into his books. As a student of archeology and anthropolgogy, I am thrilled to finally find an author who will go out of the way and really put to tests his beliefs. I have enjoyed his earlier books, and am looking forward to his new books. T he only problem that I find in reading this authors works, is that he leaves the reader pondering more questions then ever before. I think that he does this puposely to not only encourage his fans to buy more of his books, but also to really expand the readers own ideas and beliefs. Some of Osman's earlier books are hard to find, and after having written the author, I still have not been able to find them yet. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Nostalgia for the Alexandria tram and beaches
Andre Aciman's Out of Egypt is an amazing book, I found it very hard to put down. At a time of increased hostility in the middle east it is heartwarming to read of a time when Jews lived in peace with their Muslim and Christian neighbors in Alexandria. Not a whiff of anti Jewish sentiments was reported by Aciman until after the Suez War. Aciman and his family left Egypt in the sixties.
4-0 out of 5 stars A portrait of ethnic cleansing in Egypt
As another reviewer noted, it takes a while for the reader to get his/her bearings about the ties of blood and marriage among the characters in Aciman's memoir. The beautifully written book then becomes an elegy for a lost way of life as the cosmopolitan city that Alexander the Great had founded and that remained significantly Greek through the time of Cavafy, butunderwent "ethnic cleansing" by Nasser's United Arab Republic.
4-0 out of 5 stars A charming family chronicle
Aciman's memoir of his multiethnic, multiglossic family in Alexandria starts out a bit confusingly: he purposefully (and perversely) hides just how certain characters are related to one another, and to himself, in the opening sections, which makes things a bit confusing. But once he enters as a character himself in the book, things straighten out and the reader can immerse himself or herself in the sights and sounds of mid-century Alexandria. The characters (mostly his family members and servants) are charmingly original, and really come to live. Oddly, though it takes his introduction into the narrative for the memoir to straighten itself out, Aciman's own character is kept occulted in this memoir, and most of what we see him do is misbehave. Aciman clearly and wisely learned from Proust (his admitted model) never to sentimentalize himself--a mistake other memoirists often commit. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderful book
While Elam civilization looks as not important or as a minor one for many other historians, Mr. Potts created a great book about these forgotten ancient Iranian people. I enjoyed reading the book a lot. Thank you for your great courage.
5-0 out of 5 stars Ancient Elam becomes More Intelligible
This is a well designed and well produced textbook, which seems to have been organised with students and teachers in mind. Potts has given us a cohesive and logically developed narrative; a big advance on the two chapters by the late Ren Labat in the 3rd edition of the Cambridge Ancient History. Pott's aim has been "to provide a cogent, readable synthesis of Elam" (p. xxi). And he has achieved this admirably. Features of the text of the book are the summaries at the beginning of each chapter (`text boxes'), the clear site maps for each chapter, and the chronological outlines. All very useful.Read more

In the beginning parts of this work, he explains the terms used, concepts, history of KMT and Prt m hru, language use, etc. He supports the book with Mdu Ntr(words of the Ntru, divine speech), pictures of tomb inscriptions, and best of all, Sehu Maa explains each chapter from its intended implications. 5-0 out of 5 stars Engrossing
This book gives intimate details of the events most important to the women involved-- family dynamics, marriage, childbirth, and so forth.Because Ms. Abu-Lughod seems to have become almost a member of the family, the book reads like an insider's rather than outsider's account. It is affectionate without becoming sentimental or lacking in objectivity.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!
I am not usually particularly intrigued by anthropological or ethnographic treatises, but this one is very well-written and very interesting. The author plays with narrative styles and tells stories as just that-- stories-- even as she describes a life in an Egyptian Bedouin community that many readers will not have imagined, let alone experienced.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of Egypt's greatest collection without a doubt.
The artifacts are arranged from earliest to latest, which creates a greater understanding of the arts and their progression. The arts themselves are mostly jewelry, coffins, statues, and painted carvings. There are many other objects like beds, chairs, etc. A discription of the objects is listed with it's use, material properties, aerchaeological founder, and a story behind each item.

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing Book
This is definitely a cheaper way of seeing the museum in Cairo! When I went to Egypt last fall, we spent an afternoon in the museum.People could spend days in there and see new things. It is so packed full of artifacts that we could only stand to be in there for a few hours. Our brains could only absorb so much! This book is a good way to go back and learn about all of the things that we saw.5-0 out of 5 stars EGYPTIAN TREASURES FROM THE EGYPTIAN MUSEUM IN CAIRO

4-0 out of 5 stars Good Read
I found this book easy to read and interesting. I have several Joyce Tyldsley books and I have yet to be disappointed.

4-0 out of 5 stars Informative
Daughters of Isis is a very informative book. There were times when I felt that the author was either drawing conclusions from thin air or repeating information to pad the book but these offenses are out numbered by the many fascinating illustrations and quotes from ancient texts.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great but...
I came very close to getting in very deep trouble for bringing this book to school (I'm a freshman in highschool.) the day after I'd bought it. At that point I had barely begun it.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Splendors Of The Boy Pharaoh
Since the sensational discovery of the Boy Pharaoh Tutankhamun's almost intact tomb in the Valley of the Kings in 1922 there has been a regular stream of books dealing with the tomb, its discovery, and the rich bounty of treasures found in the burial. The books vary greatly in quality but I have to say that Nicholas Reeves' 1990 work on the subject "The Complete Tutankhamun: The King, the Tomb, the Royal Treasure", is without a doubt one of the very best on the subject and is full of informative information and historical background, and beautifully presented colour and black and white photographs on the subject all displayed in an easy to read format that has a logical flow to it. Indeed "The Complete Tutankhamun", is a small jewel box in itself and is essential reading for all budding Egyptologists or people interested in the customs and religious beliefs of ancient civilisations such as Egypt.
4-0 out of 5 stars The tomb and its "treasures" are the real focus.
If you want a multitude of pictures and a fair discussion of the tomb's discovery and the objects found in it, then this is an excellent book.We used this in a grad/undergrad level seminar I took back at Columbia University because it is so detailed on the tomb and its discovery. However, when it comes to information about Tutankhanum himself there are only 20 pages that look at his life and the historical context of his life, most of that is spent on his family and the dynasty he is part of.20 pages out of 200+?!This is why I'm giving this book only 4 stars -- the cover and the summary offered by the book itself suggests the book has three parts and this first one is barely there.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Complete Tutankhamun......THE BEST
This it is the best book than I have seen related young king Tutankhamon, with an exquisite and impeccable design, besides to have an excellent bibliographical quality. My English is very basic, for that reason I cannot continue describing to this book jewel ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Important wisdom from the Ancients
I am surprised to see so few reviews here, as this book has had such an influence on my life. I do not know how to begin to adequately express its significance, and perhaps that is appropriate. Those who are ready for the knowledge will be drawn to it in a time and manner which is right for them.
4-0 out of 5 stars Hermetic Teachings
Wayne Chandler has done a great job with this book. Very detailed and show direct connection with historical facts and the Hermetic Laws. A good book to learn how the Laws works and can be seen in everyday life and history. One problem though, he continues to "compare" KMTic Hermetic Laws with writings that are much much younger than TEHUTI LAWS. He does a lot of comparsions with India and Chinese. I never could overstand how one can think they can explain something better by comparing it to another? And the other is a subject most readers do not know about or are not concern with! If it was the Laws in KMT why reference India? What did the Indians do that is more understandable than what the KMTians ORIGINALLY wrote? I felt that I had a more overstanding of India's sufism than I did about KMTic LAWS. So this is why I gave this book 4 fours because of the unnecessary reference to the KMTic LAWS thru Asian eyes.

5-0 out of 5 stars Gettfing to know you...............
Getting to know a little more about Wayne through his book "Ancient Future" that I was privileged to reveiw when it first made its debut has been & is a blessed opportunity. It immediately caught my heart because of my love for all peoples of the world ~ no matter their color, creed, looks, education etc.It is saddening to realize how many people of the world have and do suffer from mistreatment. We all need to do our part in hightening the vibration of love on this planet if we are to survive. Thanks Wayne for taking your time & energy in putting Ancient Future together. Be well & lots of love~ ... Read more
