5-0 out of 5 stars A terrific collection of articles
There's already an excellent review of this fine book on this site (by Shalom Freedman). But I'd still like to add a few words of my own.
5-0 out of 5 stars An important analysis of an extremely sad phenomenom
This book is a collection of essays in which the phenomenom of Jewish self- hatred most particularly in the form of hatred of the Jewish state is analyzed and to a degree explained. It deals with many of the most well- known haters, including Chomsky, Tanya Reinhart, Norman Finkelstein, Israel Shahak, Daniel Boyarin , Jacqueline Rose, Joel Beinin, Michael Neumann(Canada), and others.

Editorial Review

Open the mummy-shaped box.... Smell the must of the tomb.... Reveal the secrets within.... Included among these secrets are a 24-page booklet all about real-life mummies and the people who study them, a 10-inch plastic-model body, and four carved heads of gods to protect the Canopic jars where you'll store the plastic organs found inside the body--both lungs in a single jar, please! Find the hidden drawer containing the gauze wrappings, headdress, scarabs, and a cardboard cat you can mummify to accompany your Pharaoh in the afterlife. Wrap your mummy from head to toe, place lucky amulets in the gauze, and bury it in the back yard (soak the gauze in brine first for a more realistic mummy experience). Don't forget to seal the tomb with your "Curse of the Mummy" sticker ... and to warn your parents, so when they rent the expensive tiller to dig up the garden, they don't break the blades on your ultracool mummy.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Cool, but overpriced
My kids (10 & 11) had fun exploring this. No one has yet discovered the "craft" side of it. Still it would be a nicer treat from the Clearance isle. Full price is a little much for what you get.

2-0 out of 5 stars Time intensive cutting and gluing for assembly
Time intensive cutting and gluing of small pieces.Frustration level of trying to get all the little pieces to stay together with glue overshadowed the learning. My daughter loves Egyptian history, but became bored with this kit because of the time involved in putting the canopic jars and cat mummy together. Would have been much better if kit had come with premade canopic jars (or something easier to assemble.)

5-0 out of 5 stars Best of the Best
Like many kids his age, my seven year old son is VERY interested in mummies. (I think it's one of those ways kids cope with beginning to understand the concept of death and death rituals, so I figure it's okay to indulge his macabre interests!!) Anyways, I paid $19.99 for this kit at a local museum, and even at five dollars more than the Amazon price, it was a great value! The enclosed book that comes with the kit is terrific on it's own. It starts by explainging about ancient Egyptian mummies, the rituals surrounding their production, and why these rituals were important to the ancients. As the book describes the rituals in very kid-friendly but still no-holds-barred kind of way, your child can follow along with the enclosed kit pieces to make his own super-cool mummy. There are even canopic jars! The book then goes on to describe where else mummies can be found and discusses how some are intentionally made by man while others occur naturally due to environmental conditions. Top notch all the way through! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Amazing and Interesting Book
I have been searching for a book all over the Internet on all Egyptian pharaohs from the beginning to the end. However, it was quite hard until I came to Amazon and found this book.
5-0 out of 5 stars expensive but good
an excellent book for anyone who is interested in ancient egypt. I have to say I could do without black and white photos because those photos would have been so much more effective in color.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best "starter" book available
I have a whole library of books on ancient Egypt and the dynasties of pharaohs ruling from 2664 B.C. to 345 B.C. and i consider this book to be the best encompassing book available for people who want to learn about ancient Egypt. This book should be the first you buy and read as a neew scholar to ancient Egyptian history. You will not regret it and it will allow you to decide how to procede with your interest. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars subtle and manipulative propoganda
Chacour has a huge (somewhat justifiable) prejudiced axe to grind and he does it in a sneaky manipulative beeding-heart manner that draws you into his family's pain and paints a false picture of the current struggle.
5-0 out of 5 stars Justice in the Middle East.
A must read for everyone interested in international justice. It shows the irresponsible hand of British and United States administrations in their handling of the Palestine affairs, and how they gave in to Zionist pressure. If you are seeking to find why the is "terrorism" coming from this area, this book will explain why. Yet the most interesting part is Abouna Elias Chacour's formula... May Allah, Jehova and God praise him. Down with the power hungry military zealots in the area. Peace will come when your average citizen revolts and turns them down through Chacour's formula, naturlich!!

5-0 out of 5 stars essential reading

5-0 out of 5 stars Magnificent collection of essays and photographs.
This is one of the best books that I've seen on the art, symbolism and life in Ancient Egypt. Set within the reign of Hatshepsut, a royal wife and queen who transformed herself into Pharaoh, it looks at the lives of royal women from the images and personal artifacts that have been left behind.
5-0 out of 5 stars Catalog of the Exhibit Regarding a most unusual woman
Think of early Egypt and you think of King Tut and Cleopatra. Those two, however, are not the sum total of Egyptian history. This book is basically a catalog of the collection regarding Hatshepsut a most interesting woman. She wasthe daughter of a king, and was married to her half brother. Upon his death the kingship transferred to his son by a secondary wife with Hatshepsut as regent for her nephew. Later she became co-ruler and king in her own right. Got all that?
5-0 out of 5 stars The Mysteries and Secrets of Ancient Egypt Continue to Emerge
Once again the Metropolitan Museum has enriched the history and art of Egypt books with the publication of this very impressive catalogue that accompaniesthe exhibition 'Hatshepsut : From Queen to Pharaoh'. While many other museum exhibitions have been inundatedwith people attending the King Tut behemoths, this exhibition focuses on Hatshepsut, daughter of King Thutmose I, and wife and half-sister of King Thutmose II, who in the mid-15th century BC gradually acquired kingly status and power for herself. Her reign was twenty years in length as a woman pharaoh.

1-0 out of 5 stars a disappointment
although the book has many interesting anecdotes it is shocking in its bias in favor Sunni insurgents. Hashim spends chapter after chapter about the "suffering of Sunnis" for the two years they have lost power, but makes no mention of the massacres of Kurds and Shias, and their decades of suffering. I thought the book has nothing new to add but to make the case of the Sunnis. It serves as a good statement of Sunni and insurgent view but no a level-headed analysis.

5-0 out of 5 stars First rate summary of what we know about the Iraq insurgency
The author is a soldier/scholar who is now back in the US teaching college, after a tour of duty in Iraq's Tell Afar as an Army reservist specifically trained in counterinsurgency. The Iraq situation seemed an amorphous mess to me before I read this book; after reading it I understood better the groups involved and their motivation. The author is quite candid in his views, praising someofficers and decision-makers he came across, while subjecting others to whithering criticism. There are some other good books about the initial invasion phase of the war, but this is the best book so far about the insurgency phase that still continues. An excellent book for those who want to understand the current challenges facing the US in Iraq.

4-0 out of 5 stars Chaotic times
A chrystal clear insight in an extremely complicated subject. It is, however, hard to follow some of the reasoning, and the back-history could have been more thoroughly documentede. Otherwise, a very engaging, satisfying and fascinating depicture of a chaotic movement and its counter-force. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thanks!
As a relative newcomer to the field of historical criticism, I appreciate Provan/Long/Longman's work. It is truly a sign of good scholarship to be able to take the complex and make it understandable. I don't mean easy, but understandable. Provan's command of his topic is clear and thorough, especially in regard to epistemology and testimony. Those who by faith and reason trust the Biblical texts as reliable testimonies of ancient Israel will find encouragement in this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars Turns critical methodology on its head.
The first 100 pages discusses the methodology of modern historiography and demonstrates how biblical critics continue to use out of date methodologies in their attempt to destroy the concept that ancient Israel actually existed. Especially telling is his discussion on testimony. They maintain that the biblical testimony about Israel's history is as valid a source as any other. Even modern archeaology is not neutral but needs to be interpreted; therefore it becomes another testimony in the mix.5-0 out of 5 stars a long time coming
The modern arguments for how a methodology should be when approaching the Bible are challenged, and challenged well! The book borders on overemphasizing its counterarguments. There really is no reason to do this, for the arguments are very good and hardly need any repetition.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Truth in Advertising
While the second half of this book told the story of Steve-O, the Iraqi boy, the first half of the book told about 1SG Hendrex, his life, his ambitions, his feelings, his job, his tactics for keeping his men safe, ad nauseum. The meat of the story I was anticipating begins about mid-way through, and it is a compelling, if somewhat short story.

5-0 out of 5 stars Is This The World's BestBook?
Ok, maybe it isn't The World's Best Book. But it is sure enough at the very tiptop of its genre.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Extraordinary Woman . . .
Jehan Sadat is an extraordinary and courageous woman. I was amazed to read about all of the wonderful programs she created for her country, including cooperatives for women, educational facilities, communities for the disabled, and home communities for orphans. She served tirelessly on local political committees and charitable committees, including Egypt's version of the Red Cross. The fight for women's right to divorce and vote in elections was so important to her that she risked her own family relationships but constantly asking her husband (to his annoyance) to support her agenda until he gave in. Sadat accomplished all these things and much more while raising three children, pursuing a graduate degree in Arabic literature, and supporting her husband, president of Egypt. _A Woman of Egypt_ is not just about Sadat, however; the book discusses Egyptian politics, especially Egypt's relationship to Israel and the US. After reading Sadat's book, I've come to understand the complexities between US-Israel and Arab relations. Sadat is even-handed and fair in assessment of the political situations--she does not condemn her enemies just because they are her enemies. I found her to be an admirable woman and her husband to be an incredible man--the first Muslim leader to actively seek peace with Israel. My favorite line from the book is (paraphrased): They say my husband was ahead of his time, but how can a man who lived only for peace be ahead of his time?

5-0 out of 5 stars A Woman of Egypt
I was living in Saudi Arabia with my husband for several years. Last summer, a German friend of mine gave me this book translated into German. I was completely captivated by the contents of which I knew very little and the interesting way Ms. Sadat wrote about her life. It was definitely a revelation to me how deeply rooted the problems in the Middle East between Egypt and Isreal were already at the time. Whether this my suggestion belongs into this review or not:I wished the book was made more public - I could not find it this past summer anywhere in a bookstore. (Competitive store)only showed the German title. Every American should read the book in order understand the unsurmountable problems between Jews and Arabs in the region to this day.5-0 out of 5 stars Very Good Book
I've never wrote a review before but I thought A Woman of Egypt was so interesting that I couldn't resist. This book gives you an inside look at a lady who was constantly in the public eye in Egypt and wanted to see change. I thought it very courageous some of the things she did and tried to do in Egypt as the first lady. I believe Jehan Sadat spoke from her heart. You will find it hard to put this book down, I know I did! I have resided in Cairo for some years now and I can see what Jehan Sada was trying to do from a different light. Well done Mrs. Sadat! ... 1-0 out of 5 stars very disappointing...
I have been reading a series of autobiographical accounts of modern day warriors and had high hopes for this title. As others have pointed out, Coughlin's ego can be suffocating at times. This could be forgiven if it were the books only flaw.Alas it is not.The writing is amateurish at best and the author's overuse of adjective and hyperbole is very distracting. The language is disjointed and unnatural as if it were written with the heavy use of a thesaurus.Again this could be forgiven as we're reading this book for a soldier's account, not that of an English grad student.
5-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding!
This is an Outstanding book!I am a former Marine and bought the book after seeing a friend who was reading it.After reading a few pages, I couldn't put it down. It's an easy read, filled with stories of the Marine Corps and Jack's assignments.
4-0 out of 5 stars Right on Target
This is an excellent account of the early days of the Iraq war and the fascinating role a professional sniper played in it.Reading it not only made me proud of the dedicated men who go to war on our behalf, but also showed me that the noble warrior ethic is alive and well today. These Marines are heirs to the proud warrior traditions of the Round Table, the Japanese Samurai and the Spartans -- men who liveby the Spartan dictum:"Come home with your shield or on it.""Shooter" has given me new insights into the war in Iraq, the dedication of our people fighting it, and the sheer professionalism of someone who, for 20 years, had one of the most unusual jobs on earth. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Osman's Dream: The History of the Ottoman Empire
An excellent book. Very readable. A great way to compress six centuries of the great Ottoman Empire in a relatively short space. Finally the truth about Ottomans are emerging from the pens of eminent scholars, instead of garbage spewn by Armenians, Greeks, and some European powers that vied for Ottoman territories and resources for their own colonial purposes. I hate to see armenian-Americans to unfairly degrade a book that is truthful or complimentary to the great Ottoman Empire. Hope these folks grow up soon. I will not stoop to their level and demean the authors that put out lies about the "poor" armenians. Great job Caroline.

2-0 out of 5 stars Shallow political history
I was quite disappointed by this book - its like a 19th century history with a shallow retelling of the names of Sultans, dates and major battles. I would have expected a greater analysis of the socio-cultural milieu in which the Ottoman empire arose and the institutions it spawned. I kept reading on hoping that this would follow but its really just a chronological listing of sultans, the major battles fought - if you want a political history of the empire, this may work for you. But when, why not just read the Wikipedia entry if you have no interest in the socio-political institutions.
4-0 out of 5 stars Solid
This is a decent survey of Ottoman history. In many ways, this is traditional history from above, mainly a political history concentrating on the ups and downs of the reigns of the Ottoman Sultans.Finkel does well in constructing the basic narrative, covering centuries of Ottoman history in solid prose. The complicated dynastic politics of several periods are covered well.Finkel makes a less successful attempt to integrate social and economic history. She describes different phases of social and demographic history in the Empire as related to the political history but rarely provides enough detail to be satisfactory. For example, she mentions the declining Muslim population of the 19th century empire but never describes the size of the population or whether this was an absolute or relative decline. In many sections, she devotes more text to architectural history than relevant economic or social history. This book is largely descriptive and useful on that basis. As a basic political history, it will probably be useful for many, but its analytic shortcomings make its utility limited. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The very best on the subject
Runciman was a genius. A brilliant writer in English, whose grand ambitions never lead him astray from the most meticulous separationof fact from speculation, he was also an extraordinary polyglot. He read not only the Latin, Old French and Greek among the contemporary accounts of the Crusades, but the Arabic, Syriac, Persian, Hebrew, Gergian, Ethiopic, Slavonic, Norse and Mongolian as well, not to mention modern secondary works in many more languages still. (My man had a BIG BRAIN.) If he shows any favoritism at all among the warring factions of the Crusades, then it is towards the Byzantine Greeks, although what looks like favoritism to me may only be due to my own ignorance. Even if I'm right about his favoring the Greeks, Runciman is still by far the most impartial historian of the Crusades known to me. He's certainly the only one who took the trouble and had the talent to read all the sources in the original. (Most people who've read widely in more than one language can probably appreciate how much tends to be lost in translation, not to mention how much is never translated at all.) As if his reading weren't enough, he often walked through the cities and over the battlefields which he describes in his works, in order to discover things which no one had yet written. 5-0 out of 5 stars Very Excellent Point of Departure of a Misunderstood Time
Runciman's "A History of the Crusades" might very well seem daunting at first glance. Three volumes devoted to a well known but little understood series of events spanning several hundred years may seem like it will take a lot of note taking just to get through. Rest Assured this is certainly not the case.Keeping the narrative lively and and maintaing a fast pace these books read very quickly.Keeping in Mind that the period covered in these volumes stretches over about 500 years three volumes of medium size still is just a scratch on the surface of the Crusades.Following the copious footnotes the reader will easily understand that there is plenty of more material that could be explored if desired.
5-0 out of 5 stars History at its finest
Steven Runciman's three-volume history of the Crusades (originally published in the early 1950s) is widely recognized as one of the greatest works of history written in the English language in the twentieth century. As such, it is indispensable reading for any serious student of the crusading period or the Middle Ages in general, as well as those with a broad interest in military history or the Middle East.

In the global search for culprits and causes in the rise of terrorism, former Israeli ambassador to the United Nations Dore Gold shines a spotlight on a nation many think of as a close ally of the United States: Saudi Arabia. As he explains in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A history buff gets shamed...
I am embarrassed to realize the extent of my own ignorance regarding the Wahabi menace. As a lover of history and one who could draw a fairly accurate survey of the events that shaped the West during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, I was grievously unaware of the monstrous theology and murderous campaign of Ibn `Abd Al-Wahhab.One wonders how the terrors of the crusades could compare to the genocidal murder of "impure" Muslims by the fanatical armies of Wahab. One wonders still why the West fails to see the ever-present and growing threat posed by the Wahhabi poison which spans out from Saudi Arabia (our allies?) to infect Muslims around the world. This book is required reading for every American who feels the need to make some progress toward understanding why some Muslims cultivate hatred above all other "virtues."Want to know why supposedly godly people feel compelled to murder innocent women, children, and men?Want to understand why they have no difficulty murdering their own kinsmen and fellow Muslims? It's the poisonous Muslim heresy of Wahhabism.Where does it come from and how is it funded and propagated across the globe?Saudi Arabia is Hatred's Kingdom as Dore Gold has dubbed it.This book is a good starting place and a dreadful portent of things to come as long as Saudi Arabia is not held accountable. The Saudi mission to spread Wahhabism has been incredibly "successful" in Indonesia, Chechnya, Bosnia, America, and of course, Palestine where their PLO has become the center of a maelstrom of Islamic hatred. One stat that might be instructive for all those who think the extremists are a small minority is that 79% of Palestinian children state that they want to be suicide bombers when they grow up.It would seem the "extremists" are the few who want peace. If you think this is all an academic discussion for Americans consider that 70% of the Mosques in America teach the Wahhabi doctrine.Get this book and learn what those "friendly" neighborhood mosque-goers really think about you.

3-0 out of 5 stars Good start, weak finish
I found the historical chapters of the book (up until about 1960) to be most useful section. As we pass into King Fahd's reign, the reasoning becomes much more speculative.Nonetheless, the author presents a plausible scenario. Careful documentation of the links between the major players is useful, and however you slice it, the latter chapters show the razors' edge the political leaders of Saudi Arabia must walk.

1-0 out of 5 stars Politically driven with no real substance
I've read this book out of curiosity, but unfortunetely found it to be without real or factual substance and no objective conclusion.

5-0 out of 5 stars Full spectrum research !
Engdahl's Century of War is a great historical research that reveals the policies of the past and its direct connections to the conflicts of the present.
5-0 out of 5 stars Never have so few, taken so much, from so many
This book tells the hidden history of oil and money, and how they have been the underlying cause of almost every conflict since WWI. At the turn of the century oil became the new fuel to power naval fleets and provide energy. Ever since, the Anglo-American powers and their cohorts have never ceased to interfere in the affairs of other nations. In the cold calculating hands of a few, they have become the strategic weapons of choice to extend their sphere of global hegemony and domination.
5-0 out of 5 stars The Politics of Oil
This book cuts right thru the hype and allows a peek at the puppeters. Modern History (this century) is truly about the greed and stuggle for the control of oil. The author does an extraordinary job of unraveling the truth behind the curtains. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A sublime account of the demise of the "Greek emperor" and the fall of his city
Exceedingly well written and utterly fascinating, Sir James Stevenson Runciman's classic account of the siege and fall of Constantinople manages to be thoroughly academically sound and highly entertaining at the same time. Steven Runciman doesn't just deliver the dry facts, which would be alright, no, he tells the story, which is much better. And he does it without forefeiting historical accuracy, and, blessedly, without drawing any politically motivated parallels to "modern" conflicts, be they religious, or political, or both.
5-0 out of 5 stars strongly recommended
I strongly suggest to buy and read this book to all people interested in history in general.

This book consists of some interesting recollections from Efraim Halevy, who served as the director of Israel's Mossad.
