5-0 out of 5 stars Worth the time!
This book made me proud to be a woman!I learned a ton about women athletes, scientists, politicians, etc that I never knew.I also learned that even though I'm not a professional athlete, scientist or politician....we share many of the same experiences as women, wives and mothers. It's a great book and well worth the read.I recommend it for all women (and their spouses/significant others).

4-0 out of 5 stars Women hold society together
Interesting history of women in different fields, and, importantly, shows why they don't have the same interests as men in all the same numbers.
5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful work by Ms. Roberts
Beautiful work by Ms. Roberts. A treasure for all women to read and enjoy. The essays are poignant and well documented. This is a book that should live on through history and handed from one woman to another.Read more

This is my favorite book and I believe anyone could read it.You'll be recommending this book to your friends. You won't want to put down the book!

3-0 out of 5 stars The Games People Play
This was an entertaining study of the games people play in a smallish southern city. Berendt's descriptions of Savannah's atmosphere and the real character's he met there are excellent. Berendt has a great grasp of local Savannah politics. His initial enthusiasm for the place became tempered toward the end of the book as languid Savannah's also a provincial place that tolerates a certain amount of violence and mumbo jumbo, depending on who the perpetrators and targets of both are. The book's end came rather quickly and perhaps a bit incompletely, what happened to Danny Hansford's mom and her lawsuit? Berendt's description of his attending Savannah's African American debutante's ball was hilarious. The main point of this book seemed to be in real life the truth is often hard to find and when it's found it's often awful, but that money often buys the alternate truths that make it into the papers, and that's the truth that people buy.

1-0 out of 5 stars Don't Ever Believe the Hype

4-0 out of 5 stars Intriguing!
This book is great in that it's both a very personal story about Minor (the "madman") and Murray (the "professor") but also about what went into making the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). For the most part, I was more interested in the latter because of the detail and, surprisingly, community that went into creating The Dictionary. It was certainly not the work of a few posh men sitting in an attic; rather, the entire nation (as well as the United States) were involved in scouring works in the English language to contribute samples to go in the OED. That to me was the most fascinating part.
4-0 out of 5 stars And you thought dictionaries were boring!
Winchester takes an academic subject and makes it read like a Victorian thriller. He weaves together the lives of two strange and complex men to tell a story that has touched the entire English speaking world-- the creation of the Oxford English Dictionary: THE authority on the progression of the English language over the past millenium. If you love history, language, literature, and tragedies this is a book for you.Beware, this book will make you want to run out and buy your own OED -- well, a full set will run you at least $1000!There are compact and CD-ROM versions available for under $200.I guess I'll just add it to my amazon wish list and hope....

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent story excellently told
Some readers, I know, dislike Simon Winchester's conversational, discursive, sometimes off-on-a-tangent narrative style, but I for one find it richly rewarding. I first discovered it in "Krakatoa," his book about that Indonesian volcano where it's even more in evidence than it is in this title. But even here, reading Winchester is like settling into a chair, or around a fire, to listen to a talented storyteller weave an entrancing tale. If your taste in history runs to deliberate, just-the-facts reportage, then Simon Winchester probably isn't for you. But if you're willing to trust the author and follow where he's leading you, I predict you'll find reading "The Professor and the Madman" a most satisfying experience.

4-0 out of 5 stars Should be required reading
Andrew Marr is one of the foremost political journalists of the modern age and in his book "My Trade - A Short History of British Journalism" he covers in a series of what are really essaysthe development of journalism in Britain.
4-0 out of 5 stars excellent description, punchy, short on alternatives
Marr's trade is journalism, he has been a print journalist, an editor and a BBC political correspondent in Britain for the last twenty years. The book gives an overview of the origins of and current influences on British journalism. The book is witty, informed and eminently readable, as you might expect.Marr doesn't spare us the basic ruthlessness of the trade - his early tasks as a cub reporter involved trying to get details on local crimes and deaths from the grieving next of kin, he later says that he wrote disparagingly of a rising Tory minister - John Patten - who had been a source, and Marr had been a guest at Patton's home.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece
Joseph Ellis understands that it is what happens between, under and over the events of history that make it interesting. He has mastered the art of drawing out the implications of character, relationship and motivation. He brings the story to life by immersing the reader in the lives - the ideals, emotions, short-comings, likes and dislikes - of the characters that shaped the events of the American Revolution.Ellis doesn't just tell us that "they [all the major players] were making it up as they went along, improvising on the edge of catastrophe," he makes us feel it.
3-0 out of 5 stars Founding Brothers, J. Ellis
A very readable and enjoyable book which makes the men involved in the Revolution, the drafting and signing of the Constitution and Bill of Rights, the relocation of the Nation's Capitol, etc., come alive.Their relationships with each other, envy, gossip, behind the scenes maneuvering are reminscent of politics today, or maybe life in general. If there were time to read only one history book, Founding Brothers would be it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent unbiased opinion of our early leaders
Founding Brothers is an excellent read for anyone interested in a clear, concise review of our struggle for independence and the early days of our republic.Ellis' explanations of the vastly different ideas that the founders had concerning what kind of government the new country should have and how to achieve it were captivating. ... Their faces look out at us, without fear, full of hope, confidence, and pride in a new dawn for the greatest nation on earth. We lament the travails of the laboring men and women but rejoice at their new-foundstrength in union; recoil at the sometimes brutal imperialism in Christian& military guise for civilizing the 'Asiatics'; cheer the jousts ofBryan & TR, while the stolid but comforting McKinley campaigns on hisfront porch.Everywhere there is a let's-get-on-with-it spirit - theDeclaration is read aloud at July 4th picnics, and though there aretragedies such as Galveston and in the Utah mines, we know somehow we'llpull through since this is indeed Our Time.So it was in 1900 and would beso for our century -- See the accompanying video narrated by DavidMcCullough's richly American commentary!

Editorial Review

This must have been an extremely difficult book to write. Its subject, Alfred Loomis, never gave interviews during his lifetime and destroyed all his papers before his death. "Few men of Loomis' prominence and achievement have gone to greater lengths to foil history," writes author Jennet Conant. Had he not done these things, his name would be better known--and this probably wouldn't be the first biography about him. So who was Alfred Loomis? "He was too complex to categorize--financier, philanthropist, society figure, physicist, inventor, amateur, dilettante--a contradiction in terms," writes Conant. Loomis established a private laboratory in New York and hired scientists whose work in the 1930s wound up making possible both the radar and the atomic bomb. These developments were essential to Allied victory in the Second World War. Conant is perhaps the only person who could have pierced Loomis's obsessive secrecy and written this book; she grew up with Loomis's children and other members of his family. Her grandfather, Harvard president James Bryant Conant, was one of Loomis's scientists. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Perhaps the greatest 'scientist agitator' of the 20th century
A great book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Inspiring! Truth is more amazing than fiction- A great peice of American History
I thank Jennet Conant, the author for the deep courage and amazing amount of effort that must have gone into the production of this book. Mr. Loomis is of true hero quality yet he's not without his human flaws and failures. We get to see more than a glimpse into one of the greatest unsung heroes of science, technology, finance and World War II. I was truly inspired by the dedication, altruism and purposefulness of Mr. Loomis and many of the great people mentioned in the book. I also learn from their mistakes. There are times where the book gets a bit too verbose and into trivialities, but that's easy to forgive considering the degree of detail and historical accurateness that the author apparently intended.

5-0 out of 5 stars Would that we had men of this caliber today...
In all my readings about science and men of science, it became quite clear that many of the most important discoveries were made by men who were not only from families of wealth and prestige, but also men who were trained for one area (such as law or diplomacy or finance) who later in life found that their avocations became their life-long pursuits; often to the good of mankind. In Alfred Loomis, there came a mixture of innate abilities in finance, physics, diplomacy, and plain-old curiosity, of the like we may never see again. Part of this is because of the type of education that Loomis received as a member of the elite class of American aristocracy. Part of it was the sheer genius that was Loomis.

5-0 out of 5 stars Best Business Book YTD in my life.
I read this book a few years ago- made my son read it last year and have read it again recently highlighting what applies to my ambitions (in service). What a great reflection Sam Walton is of the opportunities of our country. When I speak to young people about money- I love telling them Sam Walton was a paper boy starting at age 11, worked and paid his way through college during the depression delivering papers. I began working at 11 for 35 cents an hour saving $286 my first summer, significant experience....America is a great place with great opportunities and people to serve. This book reflects infinite opportunities we have and share with the world. It should be required reading in high school and again in college, current affairs on a productive topic like business.

4-0 out of 5 stars with a co writer, but still good
Made in America had a co writer- John Huey, and that usually makes me strongly not like the style of a book. However, I think Huey and Sam did a great job on this one. It's engaging without being pedantic, and the interspersed quotes made it hum right along.

4-0 out of 5 stars Very cut-and-dry book on fighting physics
This book is a very good one for understanding the most effective ways to move the body in a fight. The author starts off going into leverage in what he titles "A Primer", and then goes into the physics and biomechanics of throwing powerful strikes, including putting the maximum amount of weight into a punch. The second chapter is "Guiding Principles for Kickboxing", and goes into powerful, nontelegraphic blows while keeping a good defensive possition. The third chapter goes a little into jointlocks, and specifically the "wakigatame" style arm bar.The next chapter, on "combat wrestling", goes into a few basic, but effective, takedowns, used primarilly as examples to illustrate the authors principles.I think the chapter on unarmed vs. knives is worth looking at, but wouldn't be my #1 source of information on the subject. The last real chapter is unique in that it's about sentry removal in a non-lethal manner for the military. The book ends with a scientific breakdown of Holyfield/Tyson.It's a very good book, especially for the power-hitting and leverage chapters.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book about courage and resistance
I have read many books about Jewish resistance during World War II and this one is among the best I have read.Once I started reading it, I could not put it down. The book covers the life of Abba Kovner, a Jewish resistance fighter from Vilna, through World War II and its aftermath. At the end of the war, Abba planned and executed acts of revenge against the Nazis. This is described in the book as well as Abba's participation in Israel's War of Independence. The book is well written and easy to read.It gives you two different pictures of Jewish suffering during the war.One picture is that of many of the Jews in the Vilna Ghetto.....one of fear and submission to the Nazi oppression. The other picture is that of Abba and his group of partisans.....one of resistance and hatred of the Nazi oppressors.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Amazing Testimony of Courage
Rich Cohen has written an extraordinary tale of heroism and survival during the most horrendous and brutal moment in mankind's history. The tale of these three individuals, Abba Kovner, Ruzka Korczak and Vitka Kempner, shine through as living testimonies in the dark night of the Holocaust. You will not be able to put this book down as you race through the pages of"The Avengers." It is so well written and well documented that you wish you had 20 more books just like this one. It really is amazing how these individuals actually survived this horrible time, but they did in fact prevail and triumph against overwhelming odds. Perhaps the greatest challenge that these people faced in the end was not to end up like the monsters who had persecuted them. Rich Cohen has done an amazing and tremendous thing by writing this book, sharing with the world the incredible testimony of these three courageous individuals. After you finish reading this book, you will never think about the Holocaust in the same way.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the most engaging and horrifying books I have read
The Avengers follows the life of Abba Kovner and his associates, through the horror of Nazism through attempts at revenge, and to a life in Palestine. Although I have read several books on the holocaust, I must admit, I could not bought this book down. Cohen's writing style is very engaging. Cohen makes no value judgements here; it is up to the reader to decide right and wrong. Although I think most people would have a tough time accepting what the avengers tried to do after the war, I cannot possibly judge them. I also cannot imagine living the horrors (which are spelled out in graphic detail) that these Jews went through. One is struck again and again by the brutality and sadism used by these Nazi animals. 4-0 out of 5 stars Pleasurable Read
The book shows that a journalist wrote it. That wasn't meant to be as backhanded as it seems. The stories about Clinton et al are those we can recall, this isn't a back room expos full of conspiracy theory.
5-0 out of 5 stars A very Objective Look at Clinton
I have to admit that Klein's book about the Clinton presidency is one of the most objective accounts of Clinton I have ever seen. Although friendly with the ex-prez, Klein pulls no punches and presents Clinton's presidency warts and all. In the end we all know what Clinton did, but Klein gives us more insight as to the "whys" of his actions. Is Clinton the greatest president of all time? No. Is he the worst? Not even close. If all books on presidents were written as objectively as this one, we would all have a better understanding of what makes these men tick.
2-0 out of 5 stars too short, unorganized
I got the impression that Mr. Klein just threw together a bunch of odds & ends he had left over from another book and notes -- the way they made the movie "Midway" out of edit-outs from "Tora, Tora, Tora!" ... Read more

One of the previous reviewers has no idea what he is saying. I worked at Gettysburg, and 56,000 people did not die there in three days. First of all, the number of casualties was not that high, it was more like 52,000. Secondly, the term "casualties" includes killed, mortally wounded, wounded, and captured. So 52,000 did not die at Gettysburg, but about 10,600 died, if you include both killed and mortally wounded. The remaining 40,000+ casualties were either wounded or captured.

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent interpretation of a great speech
The words of the second inaugural address are very moving and have great relevance for today. Ronald White examines the cultural, historical, and Biblical context for this speech. He explains how Lincoln underwent a dramatic change in what he perceived to be the causes of the Civil War.Going far beyond the usual states rights versus preservation of the Union discussion, White traces Lincoln's change of thought in clear and well-researched terms. The journey from preservation of the Union to judgment/grace theology is a fascinating one that is not often discussed in history classes today. In addition to the great research primary presented in the book, White's writing style is engaging enough to catch the interest of those who normally wouldn't pick up a history book. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good read!
I quite enjoyed reading this whole book. The information about parajumpers was mostly new to me & very interesting. The rescue stories were facinating. All these sorts of books put in some history, background of the area & people.Sometimes that stuff gets boring, but that wasn't the case in this one.The information about Alaska was so interesting I was wishing there was more, rather than skimming to get through it.I didn't give it 5 stars because of 2 complaints. One is that right in the middle of the last big story, he stops the story to give very long lists of all the gear in the headquarts. While the wide variety of gear might be of interest, the placement of it in the narrative was frustrating. The other thing was the author spent a lot of time helping us get to know the parajumpers, especially a few specific ones.Parts of the entire book were devoted to this. But in the final, climatic "big" rescue story, the none of these characters played any part.I found it odd that the story he picked to describe in the most detail didn't include the parajumpers who the book is mainly about. But that rescue was a great story as were all the other stories in the book & it's well worth reading.Impressive group of men!

5-0 out of 5 stars It's about time...
PJs have been going through the pipeline, and more have tried, for years, and it's about time they were recognized for their hairy, heroic efforts that would leave most men dumbfounded with their pants wet. (I can only hope Mike's daughter inspires a sequel to this book!! You go girl.) Bob Drury really did justice to the work these men, and the others in the Forest Service, etc., put in every day, and the camaraderie that goes with risking their lives together.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worst book ever written
I read a lot of books covering a wide variety of topics. This book is so poorly written that I actually threw it in the trash after completing it so that no one would be tempted to pull it off the shelf and read it. I kept hoping that at some point the story would come together and I would be pleasantly suprised. The suprise was that it never got better from chapter 1 throught until the end. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Light but Entertaining final "Good Night" from David
David Brinkley's final work is a brief but often amusing accounts of "persons, places, and events" covered in his long career--a literary post-dinner liquour to be sipped and savored for the moment and the memories. Brinkley is at his best when he recalls his meetings with Washington types, from reporters to presidents, in brief summations. It was fun to once again, for those of us long in tooth, recall the antics of Martin Dies, the racist Theodore Bilbo, the amusing bloviator from the Illinois prairies, Senator Everett McKinley Dirksen, the solemn hat-wearing reporter, Mae Craig, and other worthies that Brinkley chooses to comment on.Brinkley also shares his views on presidents he knew and interviewed. There is nothing particularly notable here, but little asides as, for example, his apology to President Clinton after Brinkley's late night put-down of Clinton's long-windedness during the 1996 convention are of interest.
4-0 out of 5 stars Brinkley's reflections on his career
This book is not a memoir in the traditional sense, or even directly about Brinkley.Instead, Brinkley has composed a collection of essays recounting, as mentioned in the subtitle, the people, places and events that have captured his interest during his career as a television journalist. These compositions provide glimpses into the past sixty years, and are both observant and humorous.Brinkley helps shed some light on the second half of the twentieth century, and in doing so, also provides us a glimpse into his own personality.Through his insights and reactions, we can just begin to get a glimmer of the man behind the familiar face.

4-0 out of 5 stars Sketches Across a Legendary News Career in "Brinkley's Beat"
Legendary newsman David Brinkley's final book lacks the narrative sweep of his autobiography or of "Washington Goes To War," his highly recommended history of the District of Columbia's growth during World War II. But "Brinkley's Beat," published shortly after its author's death in June 2003, retains the trademark of his six-decade news career: a walk along the fine line between wry humor and casual, near folksy storytelling, all told with an insider's sense of detail.

Editorial Review

Little is known--and less has been published--about American submarine espionage during the Cold War. These submerged sentinels silently monitored the Soviet Union's harbors, shadowed its subs, watched its missile tests, eavesdropped on its conversations, and even retrieved top-secret debris from the bottom of the sea. In an engaging mix of first-rate journalism and historical narrative, Sherry Sontag, Christopher Drew, and Annette Lawrence Drew describe what went on.Read more
