Editorial Review

During World War II, hundreds of thousands of Jews were deported from the Balkan states to labor and extermination camps in Germany and Poland. Bulgaria, with a Jewish population of only 50,000, sided with Hitler's government early on, its king having become convinced that only with German aid could he successfully press his territorial claims to land lost to Greece and Romania. Yet, in the face of constant German demands, Bulgaria's government refused to deport the nation's Jewish citizens. Instead, as the Bulgarian-born Israeli politician Michael Bar-Zohar writes in this fine contribution to Holocaust studies, "the Bulgarian Jews became the only Jewish community in the Nazi sphere of influence whose number increased during World War II." Bar-Zohar attributes the Bulgarian government's successful resistance to a general absence of anti- Semitism among the populace: most Bulgarian Jews were of the working class and had long since been culturally assimilated; even many of the ardent fascists in the government opposed their being murdered. To be sure, Bar-Zohar writes, the Jews of Bulgaria were persecuted--yet thanks to the efforts of leaders like the parliamentarian Dimiter Peshev and the cleric Metropolitan Stefan, they were spared the terrible fate of so many other Jews in the region. Bar-Zohar's book recounts an almost unknown episode of World War II history through a well-told, fast-paced narrative.Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars highly derivative, revisionist onBulgarian pogroms
I really wonder about the expertise of the author and the rave reviews of this volume. first of all it is extremely derivativ of Groueff's work. but it leaves one important episode and glosses over another. FirstlyBulgaria's Jewish population was the victim of one of the worst pogroms in Eastern Europe in the early 20th century. Most Bulgarian Jews had fled to Greece and Turkey by the the 1920's. The Bulgarians considered us a foreign element, and Bulgria was convulsed by an exremely, andcertainly for the Balkans, a uniquely, nasty anti-Semitism.
2-0 out of 5 stars Beyond Hitler's Grasp
Serious errors in documentation and unnecessary repetition mar this otherwise interesting work.Bar-Zohar cited Groueff's Crown of Thorns repeatedly, yet even more often copies large sections from Groueff's work verbatim and without acknowledgement. This is extremely disturbing in a supposedly professional historical study. The only area in which Bar-Zohar seems to go out on his own is the period following King Boris' death, an area outside the scope of Groueff's study. For that time period the work is useful; otherwise, read Crown of Thorns instead, or at least, read it first.

5-0 out of 5 stars How decent people behave
This story, nearly invisible in the Western World, is one that deserves to be told. The outline is basic. In 1943, after prolonging the acceptance of a partially coerced alliance with Nazi Germany, Bulgaria found itself ordered to deport its Jewish population to Poland. After recently being essentially handed new territories in what later became Yugoslavia (the main reason Bulgaria accepted the alliance), Bulgaria did `turn over' the Jews living in the new territory. But the somewhat nervous and timid King Boris III managed at the last minute to cancel the order for deportation of the Jewish population within Bulgaria itself. Twice. And at the end of the war, none of Bulgaria's Jews had been sent away, a saving of over fifty thousand lives that would otherwise have met the same fate as millions of others. What happened?Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars More than The Bridge Betrayed!
Sells has been know to write interesting books covering issues and clashes between Christians and Muslims, due to his Serbian heritege and his background as a Professor and chairperson of the Department of Religion at Haverford College, in the US. He critisices his own in a very tough and honest way. Even if some fanatics will claim that he only speaks about the horrible acts of crime conducted by Serbians and Croats.
5-0 out of 5 stars Awsome
I just finished reading this book and it was so intriguing that I finished it in one sitting. It will open your eyes, on the matter of Bosnia, so big that you'll be able to see the craters on Uranus, if there is any over there. Read it!

4-0 out of 5 stars Solid
Sells gives us a solid account of the war in Bosnia in the early 1990's. However, I do have some criticisms. While he covers in quite abit of detail Croat and especially Serb religious fanaticism and violence, he only mentions the Bosniac's own atrocities on a couple of occasions.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Enduring Classic
Among the many published accounts of the Holocaust, Seed of Sarah stands out for its amazing clarity, its portrayal of courage in the face of unprecedented crimes against humanity, and for its optimism despite those crimes. Not many first-hand accounts of the death camps center on the perspective of women. This one does, but it is also universal in its appeal and the genius of the author is that she allows the reader to be with her during the worst of the experience and to survive, as she has done, with love. If you are teaching or taking a course on the Holocaust or on World War II, this book is essential.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Survivor's Strength
I'm amazed that someone who has endured a tragic event in their life has found the stength to speak, and write about it. These survivor's had their businesses, properties and personal belonging taken from them, because they were Jewish!! The treatment in the camps was horrendous. I'm not even sure how they managed to survive. You can spend your life reading and studing the Holocaust, however unless you were there you will never really know. This book bring you as close as you can get.

4-0 out of 5 stars I cant believe it.........
Judith Magyar Isaacson tells her story of the Holocaust that speaks of those who cannot. This first person account amazes me that she has to decipher her role in life, but also has to fight for her life. Why should someone have to fend for him or herself while going through the hardest part of her life? When I started reading this book I thought it was going to be like any other Holocaust book I read, but it had a twist to it that made it unlike any other book I have read. This book I think is one of the best first person accounts of the Holocaust, its right up their with Anne Frank's Diary. She has so much courage to speak out about this horrific time period, to have the courage to tell us what you went through to be where you are right now.

Because Auschwitz was among the most brutal of the concentration camps, ruled by capricious, pure force and not by any discernable political or social structure, the intellectual there "was alone with his intellect ... and there was no social reality that could support and confirm it." In other words, there was no place for the intellect to act, outside of the confines of a person's own skull. Jean Amery's Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing
Amery did not only pick up a new French-sounding name, but (although this book was originally written in German) apparently also the circumlocutionary style of the French. If you like a book full of idle verbiage, with arguments beginning nowhere and leading nowhere, and references to passé writers such as Sartre, then this book is for you.
5-0 out of 5 stars Jean Amery, the thinker, makes one think
Of all the Holocaust books, this book stands above the rest, with the content focused not on the gory details of Nazi atrocities (which are by themselves worth reading if you want to validate the experiences of those who suffered), but rather on the psychological implications of being a victim. Only books by Primo Levi contain this degree of depth of thought and introspection.

5-0 out of 5 stars An extraordinary meditation on catastrophe.
Prior to reading Amery's book, I thought of myself as thoroughly read in what one French scholar has called "the writing of the disaster," but Amery's may be among the half dozen essential texts in the now overwhelming body of Holocaust literature.A profound meditation on language, on mind, and on disaster in the 20th century. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A Treblinka Buff
I read everything there is about Treblinka and I can tell you that this is one of the best accounts yet. Other alternatives are "A year in Treblinka" and Arad's "Belzec, Sobibor and Treblinka: Aktion Reinhard Death Camps". Steiner's Treblinka is a very enjoyable work of fiction (but historicaly inacurate).

5-0 out of 5 stars Star Witness in Claude Lanzmann's epic film, Shoah
None of the previous reviewers seem to know that Richard Glazar, a young Czech, is one of the most effective eyewitnesses in Claude Lanzmann's epic masterpiece, 'Shoah.'He appears at numerous points during the parts of the film that deal with Treblinka. What comes across is his vitality, integrity, and self-awareness.He was one of the few to survive the Treblinka revolt in August 1943 in which several hundred prisoners finally managed to break out, although most did not finally survive.Glazar appears too in interviews with Gitta Sereny, 'Into that Darkness,' in her study of Franz Stangl, the commandant of Treblinka.Glazar's work is utterly authentic and a MUST READ.

3-0 out of 5 stars Holocaust Deniers Beware!
Richard Galzar, a Jew from Prague, survived for 10 months as a clothes-sorter in Trebinka, until his escape in the breakout of August 1943.While not a professional writer, his clear, strongly written accountis an excellent source for true students of Holocaust history. A truly amazing book - I cannot promise that you will enjoy it, in fact I can almost guarantee that you will find most of it heart-breaking and painful.
5-0 out of 5 stars If this is a man; and The Truce
Primo Levi is the most insightful, pragmatic realist of all holocaust authors. I have read more than 50 books on the subject, and his insights into what happened, human nature, the (bad) luck of the draw, and the tragedy of his experience are brilliant and by far the most articulate. Somehow, perhaps with his scientific mind, Levi was able to maintain his awareness through an experience that is utterly beyond the scope of imagination. He somehow emerges from the ashes of this horrific epoch like a literary phoenix. He doesn't dwell on the inhuman acts and suffering, although he has a perfect right to do so, but instead offers his account almost from an omniscient perspective. This book contains the best of Primo Levi, but his other writings demand to be read as well. And, if you haven't seen The Truce, starring John Turturro, you should do so. It's not a hundred percent historically accurate, but it is a great presentation.

5-0 out of 5 stars illuminating
Primo Levi's "If This is a Man" and "The Truce" remain one of the most horrifyingly realistic depictions of life in Auschwitz. Primo Levi recounts the daily ordeals of life in Auschwitz with a stirring and poignant narration, concentrating on not only the physical and emotional hardship but on another level questioning plainly what it is to be human. Both books present an illuminating view into life in a prison camp, and Primo Levi's narration ensure that no suffering remains untold. An illuminating read. ... Read more

The title and cover photo suggests this book is about US troops captured in the Battle of the Bulge particularly since the sub-title is "American POWs Trapped by the Nazi's Final Gamble."The cover photo is one frequently published as capured GIs of the 99th Division at Honsfield on the German/Belgian border in December 1944.

1-0 out of 5 stars Worse Than Hitler's Pope!
I read this book as part of my Honours research project into the Vatican's diplomacy with Nazi Germany. I was told that John Cornwell's "Hitler's Pope", despite the accolades and the best seller status, was a poor piece of academic work, a thesis which Cornwell himself eventually recanted (See the reference in The Economist, http://www.economist.com/books/displayStory.cfm?story_id=3471137).
5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book first: best review of the subject so far!
Having read several recent books on this subject, I find that an author's bias is reflected in his/her writing more on this issue than perhaps on any other. This is particularly striking in the recent Rychlak book ("Hitler, the War, and the Pope") which is unabashed propaganda, veiled thinly or not at all.Even the more objective Cornwell book ("Hitler's Pope"), although it supports the opposite side of the debate, has occasional undertones of prejudice.1-0 out of 5 stars sheltered
The author must be a young person, who has led a relatively sheltered life. Anyone who was there knows that the Resistance, by its very nature, worked in secret. For example, theauthor failed to thoroughly research the Asissi Underground.Under the Pope's order to the bishop, Jews arrived there from Rome, were sheltered in convents and monasteries, provided with false identities, and smuggled to Genoa for passage on neutral ships. In the RC church of those days, obedience was paramount. Orders always came from above. No one would lift the cloister without Papal permission, even to shelter Jews. Ms. Zuccotti ignores the tragedy of Hitler's predictable reprisals. Whenever church leaders spoke publicly against persecution of Jews, as in the Netherlands, more Jews were rounded up and sent to extermination camps. The Pope did speak out as much as possible, as documented by the New York Times, noting his was "the only voice."At the time, few countries, including the USA, would accept Jewish refugees. All U.S. ports refused to let the St. Louis dock here, sending Jewish passengers back to Europe and death. Only false identity papers and Catholic baptismal certificates, provided by the Church at the Pope's order, allowed Jews to sail to neutral countries. The author fails to explainwhy the ranks of the Swiss Guard in the Vatican suddenly swelled, or why so many Jews were camped out in the subterranean depths of the Pope's summer residence at Castelgandolfo. These numbers are all documented. She also ignores the testimony of the Chief Rabbi of Rome concerning the Pope's help. When Hitler demanded gold from the Jewish Community in exchange for their lives, it was the Pope who offered to make up the shortage. Has she actually read Rabbi Zolli's book "Before the Dawn"? The wisdom of experience with the true evil of the powerful Nazi regime is missing from this book, and renders it rather sophomoric. ... Read more

Into the twisted mind of der fuhrer. This work provides insight into the irrational thoughts of a mad man as he conducted a war of annhilation.Great resource for the student of World War II.

5-0 out of 5 stars The most insightful Hitler book
Mein Kampf, and to a lesser extent Hitler's Second Book, were declared obsolete and terrible by the author himself (see Hans Frank's memoirs, or Speer's, among others). For insight into Hitler's personality and thoughts, this is by very, very far the best book available. The conversations were surreptitiously recorded by a notetaker during Hitler's conversation sessions with various visitors and his staff. Some entries are verbatim, while others are summaries of Hitler's comments.Obviously Hitler said many things to many people, which means one has to be extra careful in determining what he really believed. His thinking also changed over time, and, like most people, was not always consistent, which makes the task of understanding his thought all-the-more difficult. But this book is by far the most useful source for any understanding of Hitler. The comments were in private conversations, (Hitler usually did not know Bormann was having them recorded), and they are often unguarded ruminations.Of course to those without a real interest in history, the book might seem long and tedious.Hitler had a tendency to say brilliant things one minute, and then trail off into rantings about nonsense the next, so the book is not for everyone. Anyone interested in Hitler for any reason should read this book, and anyone who hasn't read it can't have much of value to say.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the greatest books
This has been one of the few excellent books i have ever read. It is actually real, it really happened, so it makes you feel as if this was happining before your eyes. It was sad, and well written. i actually heard David Faber, the author of this book, speak. He was an incredibly powerful speaker, and his book places you in his position, just as his speech does.

5-0 out of 5 stars Recommend
David faber visited our high school last week, and had told us about his horrific ordeal during the holocaust. And I was utmost touched and embraced him. I could see those fear he told us in his eyes. And some of us left the auditorium in tears. I recommend this to anyone, because there is a dark side of humanity we taken for granted, and people had suffered more than anyone who had to go through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Incredibly unimagionable boy's triumph against odds
I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Faber as he spoke at the middle school I attended when I was in 7th grade. He spoke to us about his experiences and encounters during the Holocaust that took part in Europe during WWII. Our history teacher read us "Because of Romek" as it was part of our curriculm. I have not been the same since. This is an incredible account of what he went through in keeping of his promise to his mother to stay alive. I would recommend this to a more mature audience being that it does have some parts that are somewhat rough to handle...or so were for myself but overall is an incredible read...as he takes you through his experiences. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Should be considered for a Required Reading in High School
This book is the most powerful and memorable book on the Holocaust I have ever read. Kids in school read Anne Frank, I suppose because it is so popular. It was the first memoir found, not the most telling or interesting. This book is also a great psychology book as it so graphically shows the heirarchy of needs as the situation becomes more desperate. I wish that teachers of senior or junior honors classes would consider this over Brave New World where the main character gives up. Dawid, is a much more positive book of the human spirit in that he continues to deal with the ever worstening cards he is given and works hard to survive. This book hits on so many topics: history, psychology, the power of the human spirit, man's cruelty and literature as Dawid was an exceptional mind for his age.

1-0 out of 5 stars Great film -- Terrible DVD!!!
This is a great resoource for students of the Holocaust. However, the poor transfer to the DVD ruins the film.At 55 minutes the DVD stops playing. There is no chaptering on the DVD, so you cannot easily find key episodes to show to students. In short, this is a BIG rip-off [...].

5-0 out of 5 stars A truly moving account of one's life in desperate conditions
Simply put, Dawid is an amazing young man.Unfortunately for this world, he probably had to suffer to make a long lasting impact.True greatness rarily comes to those of us who contribute daily to the ENHANCEMENT of lifeand young Dawid is proof of this. His sometimes yielding but neverbreaking spirit of joy and hopeful speculation makes him a true hero. While his tragic, and "all too early" death are sad, theimportant things left behind in his words are timeless. He reminds us allthat no matter how (supposedly) bad things get in our (truly) rich lives, athing such as maniacal tyranny and slavery can never be tolerated.Thelight at the end of Dawid's tunnel never came to him, but by his words andactions hopefully we will all see that inspiration and determination willalso glow. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good addition to an Anne Frank library
"The Last Seven Months of Anne Frank" is only periphally a book about Anne - but it is pointedly a book about Anne's experience in those last months of her life. With the exception of her close friend Hannah Goslar, who talks about her at length, Anne is mentioned only in passing by the other interviewees, all of whom were acquainted with her.But their individual stories of what they endured in Auschwitz-Birkenau and Bergen-Belsen is also her story, and illuminates her time in the camps as she herself would have - but never got the chance to.A good addition to a library of Anne Frank material, or an excellent compendium of personal experiences during the Holocaust, whichever way is more valuable to the reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful
Anne Frank's name is one of the most known names in the world. She stuned the world with her diary. But there were still so many unanswered questions about what happend after they were betrayed? Everyone knew that she died at a consintration camp, but what did she die of and so many other questions ligered in the minds of the millions of people who have read her diary. Finally Willy Lindwer took up the challenge of finding out what happend in the last 7 monthes of her life.I recomend this book to anyone and everyone, but I recomend reading her diary first. This book picks up where her diary left off and continues to the day that she died. This book is told by the women who knew Anne Frank and her family at the concentration camp and not only tell what they know happend to her, but their story as well. It is truly and amazing book and a must read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Remarkable Testimony for a Revered Legend
"The Last Seven Months of Anne Frank" by Willy Lindwer was originally a documentary. The author and filmmaker's encounter with the women who knew Anne Frank, after her family was captured, left him with more material than could ever be told in a documentary. It is collected here in this powerful and necessary testament to the legacy of Anne Frank.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Painful but Important Read
This is a hard book to read, but highly recommended. It must have been Eichmann's worst nightmare: to find himself brought to justice by the very people he tried to exterminate. One feels no sympathy for the man; what makes the book so uncomfortable to read is to see him lie and dissemble.
4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating Words From an Engineer of the Final Solution
In many works attempting to discuss the minds behind the Nazi Final Solution, the reader is harnessed with the task of sorting facts from assumptions and interpretations that too often color an otherwise accurate book. However, Eichmann Interrogated allows the reader to study the words of one of the most notorious actors of Hitler's plans for genocide and mass murder. While reading the transcripts of Eichmann's interrogations at the hands of Israeli police, I attempted to try and understand what would cause Eichmann, a man who in his earlier years had a fascination for Jewish culture, to turn evil and attempt to destroy a whole race of people.Although the transcripts don't provide an answer to such a complex question, they did provide a means to study Eichmann.Through out the interrogation, Eichmann consistently denied his role in carrying out the Final Solution.Rather than admit to any actual killings of Jews, Eichmann stuck to a story which maintained that he was simply a soldier following orders, and even then, his only task was to ensure that the trains containing the Jews were running accurately.I found it also interesting to read that Eichmann claims to have provided alternatives to the wholesale slaughter of the Jews, such as exportation of all Jews to the African island of Mauritius, or the strangely Zionistic support for the creation of a Jewish state in Palestine.Although the truth about Eichmann and his motivations will never be clear, the transcripts of his interrogation, although possibly filled with lies, provides an interesting historical document for those wishing to learn more about the psychology of the engineers of the Final Solution.

3-0 out of 5 stars Truth be known...
Adolf Eichmann was the main character behind the deportation of the jews to concentration and extermination camps during the second world war. With that in mind, one better understands the historic and sociological value of a book made of the transcripts of his interrogation at the hands of the israeli police prior to Eichmann execution at the conclusion of his trial. However several things wich I will now detail diminish the impact of this neverteless important work.Read more

This Book is for everybody to read, it is very interesting and powerful

4-0 out of 5 stars In My Brother's Image
The book, In My Brother's Image, was a book that caught my attention and made me want to keep reading. This book showed this very well. You learn about Gyuri and Miklos', identical twin brothers, life before the war when they were best friends, during the war how religion had torn them apart and the events leading to it, and after how different they had become. Miklos' son Eugene wrote the book, not Gyuri or Miklos. He vicariously wrote it and he makes it seem as though he were right there. The accounts in this book are based upon his father, uncle, aunt, and printed documents from the time such as newspapers and books.
5-0 out of 5 stars I've met the author!
I remember reading about this real-life story a number of years before this book was actually published; I still have the clipped article from the Boston Globe in one of my scrapbooks. Then, when I was a student at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, Mr. Pogany came to our Hillel one Friday night and after services and dinner read from his book and spoke to us about the story behind it.Having met the author makes reading a book even better!
