1-0 out of 5 stars Terrible Book
I was forced to read this book for an undergraduate class and it was one of the most brutal experiences of my whole life.Unless you have an absolute mastery of history and science, you will not be able to understand or follow it.This book was certainly written for his peers, who enjoyed it, but then mistakingly decided to use it as a text. I do not recomend this to anyone, no matter how much you like history

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction for Undergraduates
After years of searching for a suitable basic introductory text for undergraduate courses in the philosophy and method of history, I was pleased to happen upon Wilson's book.He is clear, concise and ascomprehensive as one could hope for in such a brief work.My onlycomplaint is that it is rather pricy for such a slim text. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent contribution to Israeli-Arab understanding
This scholarly study by Elie Podeh of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem analyses Israeli history textbooks’ presentations of the Arab-Israeli conflict and their depiction of Arab people. He contends that, “biased Israeli and Arab textbooks have fostered and maintained a kind of silent conflict between the parties. ... my hope is that better textbooks - free of bias, prejudice, inaccuracies, and omissions - on both sides of the conflict will result in a better atmosphere, congenial to the successful consummation of peaceful relations between Israel and its Arab neighbors.”Read more

I have been teaching English for years in Japan. I have used hundreds of textbook for my English class. However, never before have I come across this kind of textbook. It is intened for 5-8 graders, but ESL students canalso use it and learn so many facts about the Holocaust. This textbookimpressed me so much because in Japan we have no textbook like this. 5-0 out of 5 stars on the nature of history
For the great British historian, Lord Acton (1834-1902), study of the great books of the ages was essential in bringing a person to full intellectual and spiritual maturity. Such study was good for a man because it functioned..."to open windows in every direction, to raise him to the level of his age, so that he may know the twenty or thirty forces that have made our world what it is, and still reign over it; to guard him against surprises, and against the constant sources of error within; to supply him both with the strongest stimulants and the surest guides; to give force and fullness and clearness and sincerity and independence and elevation and generosity and serenity to his mind, that he may know the method and law of the process by which error is conquered and truth is won: discerning knowledge from probability and prejudice from belief; that he may learn to master what he rejects as fully as what he adopts; that he may understand the origin as well as the strength and vitality of systems and the better motives of men who are wrong; to steel him against the charm of literary ability and talent, so that each book, thoroughly taken in shall be the beginning of a new life and shall make a new man of him". Lord Acton; quoted in Hill, p 285-286.
3-0 out of 5 stars Good study;questionable subject
Lord Acton (1834-1902), usually regarded as one of the most eminent Victorians, has largely eluded thorough analysis because of the formidable problems facing the biographer.Any definitive study must involve examination of the vast pile of Acton miscellany gathered at the Cambridge University Library, travel to several European archives (and concomitant facility in French, German and Italian) and an understanding of some fairly arcane problems of 19th century Catholic dogma.Roland Hill contends successfully with all these factors in this excellent study.3-0 out of 5 stars A Master who never produced a masterpiece
This is the first major biography of Lord Acton since mid-century.Thisremarkable historian, Catholic dissident, and philosopher of freedom was inmany ways the very epitome of the erudite Victorian scholar. That is, hewas _so_ learned, that the present-day reader should distrust any reviewer, including the present one, who presumes to encapsulate and classify him ina few easy paragraphs.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Interesting Volume
Reading Hutton is always interesting, as he is such a pivital individual in fencing's transition from the nineteenth to the twentieth century. "Old Sword-Play" gives us a look at fencing's early stages of develpment. For the fencer, it is good to know one's origins. As the author of "The Art and Science of Fencing," and "The Inner Game of Fencing," and the editor/publisher of FENCERS QUARTERLY MAGAZINE, I recommend this book.

2-0 out of 5 stars Dissapointing and uninformative
For somebody who knows nothing or little about the history of Indian-white relations in America, this book would be no help.I have read extensively on this subject and was therefore able to make conclusions about what Hagan was saying throughout the book.He quotes frequently in places that don't fit and have no place in the text, he alludes to things but does not explain what he means, he mentions historical characters but does so in a way that leaves either misinformed impressions or leaves the reader clueless as to why he even mentioned them. For a book by a University Professor and in the Chicago History series, this book is a sad excuse for covering "American Indians." ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Great for 1933 and 1939 World's Fair Collectors
I am an avid collector of 1933-34 Chicago World's Fair memorabilia so naturally I was anxious to get my hands on a copy of this guide. Howard Rosen filled this collector's guide with an abundant amount of colorful photographs of items ranging from vases, bookmarks, china, tapestry, and posters from both the 1933 and 1939 World's Fairs. Also included is a brief explanation of why these two World's Fairs were so important for the psyche of the country during the Depression era.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Bernard Bailyn, A First Rate Historian
Bernard Bailyn, brilliant historian, answers a series of questions at Dartmouth College while in residence there on the subject of writing and teaching history. To the average reader, this guide will be not be hard toread, but probably not very necessary unless there is an intent to teachundergraduate or graduate students in a small class setting or if researchis in process to complete a larger work on history. The book containspractical knowledge for all history teachers and offers some very generalassumtions that must be kept in mind whether teaching or reporting onhistory.Well written and constructed, but intended for the serioushistorian.

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the wisest books on writing history ever written.
Someone had the inspired idea of having one of the greatest living historians take part in an interview on his craft and profession. The result, ably edited and presented by Edward Connery Latham, is one of thewisest and most accessible books ever written about writing history. Bailyn's work spans the range of historical scholarship, and he is perhapsthe most influential historian of the second half of the twentieth century;the list of his graduate students that appeared in the 1991 collection ofessays published in his honor is in turn an honor role of the nation's mostcreative, able, and productive historians.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Extremely Useful Guide to Teaching Primary Sources
What the history textbook I read in school said about the Scopes "Monkey" Trial in 1925 was that defense attorney Clarence Darrow put prosecuting attorney and three-time Democratic nominee for president William Jennings Bryan on the witness stand and forced him to admit that the days of creation were not literal 24-hour days, thereby denying the Fundamentalist's literal interpretation of the Bible and the story of divine creation set forth in Genesis. The moment is also captured in the stage and theatrical version of "Inherit the Wind."However, when I finally read a transcript of the case of The State of Tennessee vs. John Thomas Scopes and looked at the celebrated "duel in the shade," I discovered that rather than Darrow compelling a confession, Bryan had made the admission freely, heading off Darrow from the painting him a corner. What was in the history books was not what "really" happened.

5-0 out of 5 stars if the journey to knowledge begins with just a single, small step, here's a stepping stone to the "new literacy"
College leaders would do well to ensure that a copy of young Professor Trinkle's "The History Highway" is on the desktop of each faculty member, and then interview him or her a month later on what they discovered when navigating around the "new literacy". In pointed contrast, I remember too well a much older and "very retiring" professor at a highly ranked college recently insisting that "this Pen is My computer".5-0 out of 5 stars An invaluable resource for students, teachers & researchers.
