4-0 out of 5 stars You can pass with just this book
This book gives you all the information you need to pass the test,I passed with a 76 out of 80 after studying for 12 days, using only this book. The reason I did not give the book 5 stars is that the author makes several glaring factual errors. One that comes to mind is saying that Sinclair Lewis, while trying to promote socialism, revealed the adulteration of food when he wrote The Jungle.Uh.... Ms. Marlowe, that would be Upton Sinclair. Apparently you think one Sinclair is the same as any another. The author also apparently didn't coordinate with the editors very well as there are contradictions such as the text saying that there is no evidence that Hayes won the presidential election by promising to end reconstruction, then in the sample test section it states that such deal was in fact made. Sloppy, sloppy work. And there are several other similar kinds of mistakes. Not anything that would keep you from passing though, so, I still recommend this book as a single-source for passing the test. A tip: no fact or name in this book is too trivial to remember. Try to get as much in your head as possible.

4-0 out of 5 stars CLEP U.S. History II
This book was very helpful. I also watch a lot of the History Channel! Use the College Board's CLEP Official Study Guide, 17th Edition it helps. The practice tests will let you know what to brush-up on. I scored a 69.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful Guide
I purchased your CLEP Study Guides for US History I and US History II. I thought they were extremely helpful. I like the practice tests with the answers with explanations. It really helped me pass both tests. I recommend these books to anyone who will take the CLEP tests. The information and tests were almost identical to what was on the test. I agree with others to use other study guides. I would also purchase the CLEP Study Guides for $10 each that way you can get an idea what is on the tests. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The Art of Historiography
Fritz Stern has compiled a wide-ranging collection of original source materials written by historians, ancient and modern, that illuminate the nature of history as a discipline and a process. Beginning with Voltaire and Barthold Niebuhr and progressing through Macaulay, Jaures, Turner, Trevelyan, Beard, Barzun, and ending with C. Vann Woodward, Stern focuses on different roles history has assumed over a period of thousands of years as well as the various genres and subtopics in which history has made itself a home. These topics include cultural history, economic history, literature, positivism, materialism, scientific history, relativism and others. Stern opens each chapter and discussion of a new historian with insightful preliminary and background information that helps to set the historian in a better context than if it were not to appear. Other than this, his presence is undetectable, which speaks to his ability as a historian himself to remain detached from his work. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Evolution of Historical Thought
Mark Gilderhus' book is a concise look at the evolution of historical research and reporting in a well written, easy to read format which brings life to a less than exciting subject.I was assigned this book for a graduate course on historiography.History and Historians is a good companion to David Fischer's Historians' Fallacies, Davidson and Lytle's After the Fact and Richard Evans' In Defense of History.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great overview
This short book does a good job of providing an overview of Western historical thinking from Herodotus and Thucydides to the modern period. The first chapter is a brief discussion of why we study history to begin with: curiosity, a need to bring order to the world, identify cause and effect, study the identity of a people, calculate the consequences of our actions, and to provide society's memory.
5-0 out of 5 stars Concise and Informative
An excellent book introducing the origins of historical thought, the changing ideas and methods of history, and the challenges of history in the postmodern era. Also, the introduction provides a great discussion on the importance of studying history.A very understandable and readable book, only 135 pages.I recommend it highly for anyone interested in studyinghistorical philosophy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Art Of War Best Translation!
This is the best version of the Art of War I have ever read.

4-0 out of 5 stars This is aextremely short version of a timeless piece of history written for the future.
Sun Tzu's work, "The Art of War," originally written sometime in the period of time from 400 to 300 B.C.E., has experienced numerous revivals in popularity over the years. During the 1970s it was popular with students of the New Left when the study of guerrilla warfare was in vogue. In the 1980s, "The Art of War," reappeared in quite different company.

4-0 out of 5 stars Reflections by a great Historian
This book of reflections by a master historian (and victim of the Nazis, which cut short his illustrious career), is not of the same order magnitude of a philosopher-historian like R. G. Collingwood (who made use of Bloch's work on France in the medieval period), but it contains many insights and historical remarks that make it interesting and informative.4-0 out of 5 stars A Historian's Craft
Marc Bloc's style of writing (or the translation) is extremely complicated. At many times, I had to re-read many paragraphs two to three times, just to get a gist of what he was trying to express. 4-0 out of 5 stars Master of His Craft
To Marc Blanc, the craft of history is an endeavor not to be taken lightly. It is far from a trivial indulgence of human curiosity but a serious science, in fact, "the most difficult of all the sciences."The Historian's Craft is Bloch's portrait of the paragon of history as well as a road map for striving toward that ideal.

2-0 out of 5 stars Teaching Critical Thinking? Not.
In my opinion, the authors should introduce evidence in The Evidence rather than making bold, uncorroborated statements in Questions to Consider (thus tainting the evidence with bias); however the authors are prone to guiding the reader to a pre-chosen conclusion. This, to me, is unconscionable in a book purported to help students become critical thinkers. The authors apparently use a different definition for "critical thinker" than I am familiar with.In truth, the book intends to be censor morum, teaching the student to become a politically-correct thinker.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful and Efficiant
This book was exactly as described and so much more. It is well written, well organized, and does a great job keeping readers intrested. It is so wonderful and efficiant to count on products such as this.

4-0 out of 5 stars Useful if limited; we need more like it
Used this in an undergraduate class at a good liberal arts school. Many students found the workbook exercises simplistic.I like it, though, because it illustrates practical history skills using real historical examples.I am aware of no other book that does this.I particularly like the emphasis on the research process (lots of emphasis on looping back between research and writing), and analytical skills (where making categories looms large). My recommendation is to use the chapters loosely, adapting them to your own needs. When I use it again, I will use the material provided as the basis for more substantive short writing assignments.

5-0 out of 5 stars Adaptable to all student levels
I've used this book for years now for both undergraduates and graduates, with great success. The new 2000 edition is even better (except for a too-brief section on films as historical sources.) The updating with regard to libraries is especially good, and the section on statistics is appropriately demanding. The essay assignment based upon the Missouri Fur Trade readily uncovers problems and personal bias in students' work. Though written for undergrads, this guide is excellent for new grad students as a way of identifying weaknesses and building consistent skills. I require graduate students to probe more deeply in responding to the exercises, and they all agree it is a great workbook, even though it seems too basic to them at first glance! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars very interesting
I found this book quite fascinating.I have been reading Erik Larson's wonderful "The Devil in the White City" but since that comes with virtually no illustrations, I bought this book primarily for the photographs, of which it has a great many and which go a long way to conveying just how huge this fair was (there were 735,000+ visitors on the day that had the highest attendance rate).

3-0 out of 5 stars Not the best way to go...
I don't know why some reviewers said this book was accurate. It was filled with obvious errors in the answer key. The information was poorly organized, and many times the exact same page appeared repeatedly in different places. The actual review is pretty informative and all the information you need is there. As long as you really pay attention to what you're reading and are able to pick up on the errors, you should be alright. If you don't though, and blindly accept their answers (despite the fact they they plainly contradict the text) you'll end up very confused and very mistaken. My friends ordered the Prentice Hall review book (straight from their website, I don't think Amazon sells it) and they seemed to like that better.

3-0 out of 5 stars It depends what you want this book for
I got a 99 on the Global Regents, but it was thanks to my notes from class rather than this book.I had taken AP Euro the whole year and we just reviewed Global at the end of the year, about a month before the regents. At first I tried to use this book, but there was no way I could read the whole thing in a short amount of time with so many other regents I had to take, and frankly, I didn't need to.I was just hoping to get some good review questions to practice with. The questions themselves were all right, but the answer key had many, many mistakes. It was incredibly frustrating and I soon gave up using this book.5-0 out of 5 stars Let's Review: Global History and Geography (Barron's Review

5-0 out of 5 stars Dismissal is not an option
Somewhat dated, perhaps. But, Mrs. Tuchman's insights in "Practicing History" are timeless in key points on the myth of objectivity and keeping the historical context of events in view.In our day, history seems dependent on the historian's political slant with few exceptions and Mrs. Tuchman speaks to that trend years before it became so obvious. Her words also speak to the growth of the post-world war one cynicism that seems as prevalent (perhaps more so) a century later.So-called "professionals" of all fields are sometimes easily offended or threatened by what Mrs. Tuchman calls "independent" communicators in their field.Attempting to dismiss or marginalize the independent/amateur is not a response to the issues they raise.Only an independent could have written this book and challenged the "professional" establishment. And few independents have the credentials to do so as Mrs. Tuchman has.
5-0 out of 5 stars Barbara Tuchman for Dinner
I love the feeling that I'm picking the brain of BWT. Her methods of writing and observations are worthwhile for a lifetime. The humility the author has toward fact gathering benefits all her readers. This collection is first a delight to any fan of the woman herself, and second a tool for learning about good history writing. A bonus third point is for history novices like me- a crash course on several topics of interest. A "crash course" from Barbara Tuchman is possibly an experience of the most concise, informative and comprehensive summary on a subject you'll find.

Many of the research methods that Cantor and Schneider discuss here have become outdated.Yet, their advice on writing and thinking about history remains highly applicable to contemporary students studying to become historians.

5-0 out of 5 stars Required Reading For College Students
This book should be required reading for every first year college student because it teaches you HOW to read and study history... literally. It serves as a step-by-step instruction manual that makes the clear point that reading historical non-fiction is NOT the same as reading any other genre, and should not be read, studied, or remembered in the same way. In fact, the book is so practically useful that the best descriptions of it are to be found in the chapter and section titles in its table of contents: "Why Study History?", "How to Use Primary Sources", "How to Read Secondary Sources", "How to Use a Textbook and Take Lecure Notes", "Planning an Undergraduate History Program", "Shaping an Historical Essay", "Book Reviews", "How to Use the Library"... You get the point. If you have read Michael Stanford's "A Companion to the Study of History" then consider this book as its perfect compliment. Where Stanford's book mentally equips you to approach the study of history, this book physically prepares you for historical work. I wish I had discovered this book before my third year as a history major. If I could make some critical comments about this book, which are usually more helpful than unadulterated praise, then I would. After discovering many of the techniques Cantor discusses on my own through trial and error, I can recommend this book with 100% confidence. If you must take college history courses - let alone major in history - purchase this book. ... Read more
