A Two For Effort
This book is written from the viewpoint of a flaming socialist with the attitude that anything white or European or is overly valued in American history textbooks.Loewen does have many valid points about what history textbooks omit, but the degree to which he is clearly slanted to the left is ludicrous."Lies My Teacher Told Me" could have been an amazing book, but all it did was aggrivate me and motivate me to write a 23 page paper debunking half of what the author wrote, much to the dismay of my idiotic Sociology professor.The only reason I didn't give the book 1 star is because the overall intent and effort put forth were good, but the book as a whole is just far too biased.

Provocative, appealing and controversial
Fomenko has succeeded to convincingly demonstrate the misconception about what "history" factually is... It is fiction and -like we can read and judge for ourselves- no science. It indeed is "make belief" only. I "discovered" Fomenko while studying the "old" history of Al Andaluz, Spain. Having found too many contradictions in available data, having seen too many forgeries as to pretend the importance of christianity for its decline, I ventured out to find Fomenko, who convinced me that we know little if anything for sure of the epoch before the XI-century. However, the integration of the Arabic-Islamic cultural history into the heavily distorted Western fails... There are some attempts to fit "the budding new religion" (Islam) into Fomenko's scheme, but they are too weak to be taken seriously and too often focussing on Turkey as the region where things started to influence the West, which is untrue at all.

Immensely stimulating!
Fomenko's thesis that all of ancient history was either invented during the Renaissance or at least only based on recent medieval events provided me with an enormous trigger "to see for myself". Having been interested in history for a number of decades, but having got tired of always the same topics in only a new jacket, Fomenko's book opened wide avenues to study new topics to test the author's thesis. To give just some examples: medieval history of the Middle East (Islamic history), the history of the Mongols, Tamerelane, the Ottoman empire; the origins of Christianity and Islam, the development of cartography, language, technology, astronomy.

Calling all educators: A MUST HAVE!
OK, the fact that he is "the" professor who changed the course of my life notwithstanding: This is a terrific book, one that opens doors for teachers who want to think about "what" they do, "how" they do it, "why" they use the materials that they do, and, ultimately, what critical pathways they have opened in their students at the end of the day. Wonderful history book!
This is a "living book" for history at its best!Naturally it cannot contain EVERYTHING one might want in an ancient times history text, it does a WONDERFUL job of bringing history to life for children ages 6-12!I was unsure about this series at first, but once we got into the 1st book, we were hooked!We added some other resources into our study (to fill-in some gaps) and also used the activities book that is available.All-in-all, this is a nice, solid anicient history book for children and while it won't fit all families, it was exactly what we were looking for.:o)

I really, really wanted to love this book!
I really wanted to love this book.I was seeking an engaging survey of ancient history told in an accessible manner for young children.While it partially accomplished that goal, the book had a number of flaws.

GOOD WITH OTHER MATERIALS
I was forwarded this book by my AP teacher. I thought that along with the class, the book helped. I would use this along with your class textbook and class notes. But if you are taking this without a class, I would not recomend it. I would definately use an actual text book, such as the AP version of World Civilizations: the global experience. the book is written by someone who writes the AP exam, and it very good. The book is definately worth the money. I would also use the college board's AP website for the requirements and make sure that you can answer those comparisons. I made charts that had those comparisons. But I would only use this book along with your class.

Depends on what you prefer...
I took the AP World History exam in 2004.This book was my primary source of information, since my teacher was absolutely useless.We were given "study outlines" that were never gone over, and the material was very rarely taught.I didn't really begin studying for the AP exam until March/April.I started to read this book, and found it to be very helpful.When I took the test, I got a 5.

a poorly written rough draft of a book
This is an awful book from start to finish. It contains little historiography and is poorly written. Bentley spends a lot of space on the universities attended by historians and other useless details and not enough space explaining their ideas.

An astonishing achievement!!!
This is, without question, Breisach's magnum opus.From Herodotus to Hegel, and from Bancroft to Collingwood, Breisach offers the student of history a cogent history of historiography.While it is probably best suited for graduate students and advanced undergraduates, it should be required reading for "history buffs", History Channel producers, and David McCullough.
Immigrants into the future
When I studied for the MA, this book (and John Lukacs' "Historical Consciousness") had the greatest influence on my developed historiography. THE BEST
The history of history as a discipline (historiography) tends to be a boring topic. One of my teachers even told me never to take a course in it. Professional historians tend to avoid the subject like the plague. This has left it in the hands of amateurs, even though some of those amateurs have been geniuses in their own disciplines.Read more

It Takes Courage To Know One's Motives
For a book as brief as THE PRINCE, its impact on history has been at least as great as almost any other work. Over the centuries, it has gotten a bad reputation as some sort of guidebook for evil.But back when it was first written in the 16th century, Machiavelli indeed intended it as a guidebook, but neither for evil or for good.Rather he wrote it for a specific purpose. It was written expressly for the ruler princes of the Italian city-states who he believed could best benefit. Although its precepts are generalized to fit most country's ruling elite to a certain extent, the advice was tailored to fit the only government with which he was most familiar, his own. His motivation for writing has been construed as a bald grab for power, with Machiavelli as Mephistopheles and the grabber as a power hungry Dr. Faustus.The truth is more prosaic.His sole concern was the security of Italy.Concepts such as good, evil, war, peace, love, and hate were irrelevant only insofar as they productively led to this security.Those who read THE PRINCE today and try to follow his advice will find that such advice simply cannot be applied when the host country can reasonably call itself democratic.Consider an American politician who reads Chapter 17: "Of Cruelty and Clemency, and Whether It Is Better to Be Loved or Feared." Machiavelli could not have conceived of a leftist judiciary ruled by the edicts of Political Correctness which would not inconvenience even one's enemies to protect one's friends or even oneself.In the 16th century, rulers could and often did take actions that were harmful to a few for the betterment of the many. Similarly such a politician today may read Chapter 18: "In What Ways Princes Must Keep Faith." Here Machiavelli argues that since the world is often run by unscrupulous and faithless dealers, one need not be overly concerned with keeping one's word given to those reprobate leaders.Can you imagine what some politicians would say when they realize that they are dealing with world leaders who may not always be honest but we must act nobly in any case?Despite the resurgence in interest in THE PRINCE, such interest is likely to remain in the academic arena until such time as our governmental system of checks and balances is replaced by one with which Machiavelli is more familiar.

Political Power and Political Reality vs. False Appearances
Niccolo Machiavelli (1469-1527)wrote THE PRINCE as a "how to" book.While this book was written in Renaissance Italy, THE PRINCE is a timely classic of political thought that has been badly distorted by shallow media men and historians too cowardly to carefully examine political reality.
A great little book...
I love this little book. I only wish Mr. Machiavelli had written more - much more. One word says it all: honest. This book tells it like it is. Not for the politically correct, but for those who appreciate an honest take on politics and government. If you love books that say it like it is, no matter the politics, then you'll likely enjoy this small book. Amazingly refreshing for 1530 AD. only a stiff could possibly find this book remotely interesting
After reading this book and writing this review, I considered reporting it to the U.S Consumer Product Safety Commision, because this book is dangerously boring! I found no new information relevent to anything important. In addition, I believed that certain parts were extremely repetitive, and the topics were dull. The AP teachers may find this book interesting, however, they obviously do not care how their students will react to reading such a dry group of essays. I would highly not recommend this book to anyone, and if you do have to read it for AP World History, good luck.

Anxious
Reading this book just makes me exremely anxious... I don't know why.. Maybe its because it just talks about a bunch of stuff that I'm already aware of.. i would rather opt for an interesting story that shows this rather than a bunch of essays. However, if you're into trade and want to sharpen up your knowledge on it, this book is for you.

Fun Non-Fiction(Woo, It's My First Review!)
For my AP world history class, I was required to read a non-fiction book over the summer.I definatey don't regret choosing The World that Trade Created.I learned a lot and I wasn't bored reading it, which is definately a good thing.

Prescient St Augustine?
We can so far divide the New Chronology into the following three parts:
Something of a disappointment
After having read the first volume of this expected series of 7 volumes I was triggered by the thesis of these authors that ancient Greek and Roman history did in fact take place in the Middle Ages. So I started studying medieval history of the Middle East - also known as Islamic history - to find out if the opponents of the ancient Greeks and Romans - the Acheamenid Persians, Sassanids, Scythians, Egyptians, etc. - also have their duplicates in medieval history. My search was disappointing:none of the many medieval Islamic dynasties seemed to correspond to the ancient middle eastern rulers.
Romulus courts Helen, Paris founds Rome, Moses goes to Troy..

In his book, Going to the Sources: A Guide to Historical Research and Writing, Anthony Brundage offers a concise and informative guide on the often daunting task of historical research and writing. Throughout the book, the author maintains that history is a “dynamic and evolving process.” Therefore, it is not only important to think and write like a historian but to also “explore ways in which historians actually go about examining the past, constantly searching for fresh patterns and meanings, and developing new methodologies to achieve them.” (Brundage xi)
Everything you should have learned about libraries...
The chapter on how to use a library is worth the ten bucks all on its own.It is exactly the kind of overview of research materials and their use that librarians give when someone bothers to ask!Overall, the book is simple, straightforward, and USEFUL.Everything you need to know and nothing you don't when it comes to writing history papers.The couple of hours it will take you to read this book will pay off in the depth and quality of your paper, if you follow Brundage's research advice.This is THE book to buy if you have never written a research paper and have never been inside your campus library before.It is written for history majors, but there are only two chapters that other disciplines would want to skip.Most of the book is helpful to anyone who wants to learn something from their assignment -- not just get it done.
