2-0 out of 5 stars Hezbollah The Lebanese Goodwill organization
This bookd paints hezbollah in a very benign manner. The author goes to great detail to explain how hezbollah helps the lebanese people.I did not know much about hezbollah before i read this book.I was interested in learning why they were among the world's most feared terrorist groups. This book did not do that for me.From the little I do know about this book it turns the tiger into a mouse. If you're interested in reading about how hezbollah really isnt that bad and Israel is the devil, Buy this book.If you're not keep searching for a good book on hezbollah, I've yet to find one.

5-0 out of 5 stars it a good book with lots of facts
i liked the book..it showed lots of facts..and as a person from south lebanon...i could tell whats right and whats wronge..especially reading a book about south lebanon and the war which went down there4-0 out of 5 stars The moving inside story of Hezbullah
I read Ms Jaber's book, and was so inspired by it I visited South Lebanon. Ms Jaber is obviously not an Islamist, but her unbiased and contextual approach presents a picture, which many of Hezbullah admirers would recognise. She shows the Quranic roots of the movement by quoting the Holy Scripture at each chapter head. Most importantly she describes the comprehensive nature of the Party's work, and not just it's military aspects. She allows the Hezbullahi and other players in the drama to speak for themselves, yet is not afraid to form an opinion about some of the controversial aspects of recent Lebanese history.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Outstanding information, sometimes a tough read
The guy who wrote this seems to like using big words just for the sake of using them.I have never seen the information in this book anywhere else.It is a great history of timekeeping. If you're fascinated with clocks or watches and would like to get some true education, pick up a copy of this book.Just be warned that it is not a book that most people can just breeze through.

5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful history of technology and competitive change
I read this book in it's first incarnation, when I first became interested in horological collecting.Mr. Landes writes an informative and educational treatise on horological development and history, and in theprocess creates an illuminating case study of the impact of competitivepressures on established industry. It is fascinating to take one oforiginal "high tech" industries and see how technological changeand marketplace behavior affect entire companies and national industries. The long-term history described in this book perfectly illustratesSantayana's "remember the past" concept. There are amazingparallels to technological and marketing revolutions we still seedeveloping today.A good read, which I would recomend heartily forhorological afficianados and students of business and technology. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Women in Racism and Gender in the 1920s by Kathleen M. Blee
The white-hooded knights of the fiery cross have been the subject of a lot of research, some focusing on the influence of religion, socialism, and Christian Socialism in the group and in government. Much of the work expresses worries of a future filled with religious persecution and totalitarianism. Those worries have relevance to the enormous size and scope of government in the USA and its growing police state.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great short history of both Klu Klux Klans!
This is one of the few histories of the Klan that clearly documents the fact that there have been not one, but two Klu Klux Klans. It also examines just how deeply women were involved in the movement, a little-noticed phenomenon in the past.5-0 out of 5 stars Who Are These Babes?

5-0 out of 5 stars The French Revolution in a readable form
Being overly interested in history I must admit to a hole in my understanding of the when, the where, and the who, of the French Revolution.Tackett has painted an immensely readable picture of "when the king took flight" and how that pivotal event shaped events to come. It's not quite Tom Clancy (Whew!) but then again it's not the dry recounting of history that the casual reader fears. I enjoyed it greatly.

4-0 out of 5 stars The King's Treason
Timothy Tackett is one of the more curious members of the current generation of French historians. He actually goes into archives and tries to figure out what people thought and did.Ordinarily this is what historians do as a matter of course, but under the reign of the Pope of Revisionism, Francois Furet, extensive archival research is replaced with, in the works of Furet, Mona Ozouf or Keith Baker, long analysis of a select and limited number of documents.Tackett by contrast, after starting with a monograph on Catholicism in particular region, has provided two invaluable monographs based on the fullest research yet to date. The first was the on the Civil Constitution of the Clergy, while the second was a thorough study of the National Assembly. In contrast to the Furet school's subtle insinuation that the Revolution was doomed at the outset because the Revolutionaries were dangerously utopians, Stalinist "avant la lettre," Tackett shows that the Revolutionaries were reasonable people in difficult circumstances. For the past few years he has been working on the origins of the Terror.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Inside the Klavern: The Secret History of a racist group in the 1920s by David A. Horowitz

2-0 out of 5 stars minutes don't make good reading
i really like the Fords book cowritten by horowitz, so surfed his other books. this one may be great for the kkk scholar, but for the casual history buff who wants to learn something about the life inside the kkk in the 20's........it's about as interesting as a phone book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A staple for Klan scholars anywhere
David Horowitz has provided the scholarly community focusing ofthe Ku Klux Klan with an incredbily useful tool; the actual minutes from a Klan in La Grande, Oregon. With his brilliantly edited volume, Horowitz provides interesting insights into Klan functions, dress, politics, commerce and attitudes as told by Kligrapp Harold Fosner. What is more amazing though is that these records have survived, and through Horowitz's dilligence, they have been recovered from the Oregon Historical Society and made available by Southern Illinois Univeristy press. The historigraphy of Klan study has been altered greatly thanks to Horowiz's work, as speculation in past work can be either confirmed or refuted by examining Inside the Klavern, if in fact the La Grande Klan is a true representation of small town Klans nationally.A terrific read for all. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, with a heck of a bibliography
In no way is this an attempt to augment Geoffrey's excellent review of this text, for I believe that he hit upon the major strenghts of Frey's book. However, it is worth mentioning, for the sake of those scholars that take particular notice of the bibliograhys, that Frey's research seems particularly solid, having used sources that generally are not considered on this side of the Atlantic when considering the American Revolutionary War.Most notable of these are public war records from Great Britain, which help give a more full understanding of the role of African "Americans" within the Revolutionary War.4-0 out of 5 stars The black liberation movement during and after the Amer Rev.
Frey argues that the black liberation movement had a major impact on how the Revolution played out in the South and that although the movement failed during the Revolution it successfully continued in the postwar period as a struggle for cultural power.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Revised Oxford Edition It Ain't
Don't buy this book! The Revised Oxford Edition of this classic book has it all:Insightful introduction, properly translated quotations, fine notes.
1-0 out of 5 stars Text is Great, Intro by L.G.Mitchell is better
Can't improve on the text of REFLECTIONS ON THE REVOLUTION IN FRANCE.He was the dominant political thinker of the last quarter of the 18th century in ENgland. His reputation depends less on his role as a practising politician than on his ability to set contemporary problems within a wider context of political theory. The introduction by L.G. Mitchell argues this point congently. Mitchell's intro appears in the Oxford University Press edition. It's cheaper, too.
