5-0 out of 5 stars cuban women
Thisbook, published in 1981,still has plenty of powerful information and data for the person wanting to get a real feel for the ongoing revolution in Cuba.Especially as it revolves around women and their role in Cuban society in every level.
5-0 out of 5 stars Where Promoting Women is a Policy
Women in Cuba, who had been maids or prostitutes if they worked outside the home under the U.S.-backed dictatorship in the 1950s, joined enthusiastically in the 1959 revolution. Their hopes and determination were reflected at the 1966 conference of the Cuban Women's Federation(FMC) in a banner which said: "One million women working in production by 1970."In his speech before that banner, which is included in this book, Fidel Castro pointed out that thousands of child care centers, laundries and dining halls in schools would have to be built to make it possible for women to be gainfully employed in their hundreds of thousands.

4-0 out of 5 stars Take some and don't take others
I consider this book a far more emotional read than an academic read. It's full of personal accounts and poetry which really make you feel for the people of Chile.I agree with Castro's statements on Chile but in no way does that mean I am pro-Castro.He IS a dictator.Hands down.Joan Para's and the first writer's(i believe that was Ariel Dorfman) chapter's made the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Castro et al
It is quite an honor to review this book, which was promoted by Fidel Castro. Are you guys kidding?Or is "The Left" peopled by idiots?

4-0 out of 5 stars radical Islamism versus compassionate conservatives
This is a timely publication and an excellent contribution to Foucault studies. If you are interested in anything related to Foucault this is a must read. Also, if Islamic Fundamentalism and it's constant clash with Western Imperialism is your cup of tea then pick this book now.
5-0 out of 5 stars Fetishism and cultural imperialism, Foucault's mission
This book is excellent! It is about time someone wrote the real account of how western intellectuals who knew too little about the culture and history of Iran, implicated themselves in a process that had nothing to do with them and helped set into motion a chain of events that has brought terrorism to the world via hardcore Khomeini radicalism that hides itself behind the guise of Islam.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Important Contribution to Critical Theory
"Foucault and the Iranian Revolution" is by far the most important contribution to critical theory, and to Foucault studies, in years. Coming at a time of a deepening crisis in world politics as well as political philosophy, when the secular liberal ideal is dying and religious fundamentalisms of various stripes--Christian, Islamic, Jewish, Hindu--feed like bacteria on its still moving, breathing corpse, Afary and Anderson's book offers a refreshingly sober and expansive view of the contradictions and aporias of contemporary critical theory. Concentrating on a neglected moment in Foucault's career as a journalist and political commentator, the authors amass a wealth of fascinating details, old and new, to show how Foucault's credulity toward (and even sympathies with) the most reactionary and illiberal elements of the Iranian Revolution, far from being an anomaly or sudden lapse of judgment, was instead the logical outgrowth of his own idiosyncratic theories about modernity, social movements, history, and knowledge. As the authors write: "Foucault's Orientalist impressions of the Muslim world, his selective reading and representation of Greco-Roman texts, and his hostility to modernity and its technologies of the body, led him to prefer the more traditional Islamic/Mediterranean culture to the modern culture of the West."

5-0 out of 5 stars Reactionarism and the Ku Klux Klan
Utilizing the mind frame of Paul Fussell and his contemporaries that the Great War catalyzed the transformation of European and the western world from traditional to modernity.Nancy McLean advances the paradigm that a countermovement to resist the new values and norms such feminism, corporatism, unionism, and globalization. This movement developed under the auspices of the Ku Klux Klan, which contained motifs of populism, emphasis of race, gender, and age (biological) antagonisms over class and national sovereignty. The fervor populism sponsored by the conservative forces in Athens, Georgia was similar in context to the fascist organizations that occurred in Italy and Germany in an attempt to turn back the clock on ethic morals.Yet unlike its German or Italian counterparts failed to firmly take root in politics due to the brevity of the depression and boom. These characteristics manifested themselves into morality crusades to reinforce traditional norms over modern ones, but moreover the patriarchal, social, hierarchy. These inspired the reinforcement of the prohibition of liquor consumption; reconstitute the obedience to one's parents. It caused a heightened proliferation of spying and becoming turncoats on one's neighbors.Along with other fascist organizations held contradictory beliefs suggesting the development of chain stores and national/international companies were exclaimed as instruments of Catholics and Jews to dominate the U.S. economy, and yet were Bolsheviks. To exterminate this external threat from abroad, citizens joined together to boycott these conglomerates and support locally owned shops. The Klan projected powerful images of Black men raping white women in an attempt to outrage their targeted constituents to gain members and consolidate man's power over their subordinates namely women. The other catalyst regarding this movement regarded the economic depression that occurred in 1924 thus sparked a growing animosity towards people's perceived class enemies-Catholics, Jews, and Eastern European immigrants.Which had largely been absent during one of the largest immigration period in 1880.The primary purpose was to insure the independence and propriety of the middle class. Thus attempted to prevent any further declining down the socio-economic status ladder from the upper class and utilize force when necessary when workers movements occurred in threatening their livelihood ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A pick for any interested in Scottish history and culture
WILLIAM WALLACE: THE TRUE STORY OF BRAVEHEART is a pick for any interested in Scottish history and culture, who should consider it of ongoing interest, offering a new biography based on new research of medieval records. Wallace came to fame through his active opposition to English imperialism: a fight he was willing to die for. He achieved command but was unable to retain it in battle: with little experience in government or war he nonetheless made a name for himself in both areas. Lesser known is the fact that he was a member of the nobility himself: researcher Brown offers new insights on William Wallace's experiences and dispels many myths.

5-0 out of 5 stars great book, well researched.
The book tells the history of 3 American and 4 British ships during the American Revolution. The book is well researched. It also show plenty of pictures of the seven models of these ships Harold Hahn built. The models of the first six are described briefly. The last half of the book is about the 74-gun HMS Alfred and the description of the construction of the model. Model builders would enjoy reading the book and looking at the nice pictures (all in black-and-white). It is not a step-by-step model building book for beginners. It is probably more suited for scratch model builders looking for ideas and inspiration. This is a very wonderful book, and I wish there were more books like these.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great book for ship lovers and model builders
The author describes 7 British and American ships representing a selection of different kind of vessels used by both nations in the American revolution, from a small flush-decked sloop to a 74 gun ship of the line. In the first 7 chapters the book deals with the history of each vessel and gives a description of a plank on frame model (built by the author). Each chapter includes photographs showing the respective model throughout various stages of their construction as well as a reprint (in small scale) of the author's plans of the vessel (the plans were redrawn from original plans in the National Maritime Museum Greenwich for use by model builders). The remaining 10 chapters include a full set of the plans of the 74 gun HMS Alfred and describe step by step the building of the model giving lots of hints useful also for most experienced model builders. In my opinion one of the best books one the subject one can buy. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Revolution
This is an informative and colorful book which provides a brief sketch ofthe lives and works of revolutionarieswho have been influential in the 19th and 20th century. The book, however, suffers from twodrawback.First, the authors fail to include Marx, Engels, and Lenin who have beeninfluential in the thinking of a number of the revolutionaries in the book.Second, there is no distinction made between the ideologies of theserevolutionary thinkers. For instance the Dalai Lama,Lech Walesa, andVaclav Havel been politically supported by the Westfor theiranti-communist activities. This is in sharp contrast to the struggles ofChe, Chavez, Davis, and others. Nevertheless, I recommend this book. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars What would the US be like without them?
This book is a great account of the Student Non-violent Coordinating Committee, which was started in 1960 in regard to Segregation on Americas buses and in the Woolworth dining room. This book leaves out no account, and anyone who had anything to do with the movement and SNCC is mentioned in this book.Carson went all out, and I think this book should be required reading in every Civil Rights History course.

4-0 out of 5 stars Great analysis of black empowerment
This book traces the rise and fall of SNCC:the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee. At the time Carson wrote it, it was one of the few books on the Civil Rights Movement that didn't focus on Martin Luther King and SCLC, and as such provided a welcome addition, even corrective, to the mainstream narrative of the movement. It is also a brilliant analysis of the dynamics of a reform movement and the tensions between leader centered and group centered styles of leadership. The analysis of Bob Moses and his approach to grass roots empowerment is right on target and provides a whole new way for thinking about Freedom Summer and organizing in Mississippi. This book is not for the fainthearted--its academic prose is dense at times and details can be a little confusing for those unfamiliar with SNCC personnel, hence four stars and not five. Nonetheless, it's worth taking time with, and I assign this book regularly for upper level directed studies and recommend it to students for research papers. Whether or not SNCC's achievements were compromised by the antics of former members in the 80s and 90s,Carson's book is a great analysis of its formation, tactics, and dissolution.

3-0 out of 5 stars SNCC Comes Full Circle
In Struggle recounts the progression of the SNCC from its early days of assimilationism and conventional middle class values, through its radical and militant period, its separatist and provocative period, and then backagain into conventionalism and low-level activism. Many SNCC membersduring its radical period, debated whether the victim should become theexecutioner.Instead, the victim becomes part of the system, such asMarion Barry's accession to the mayor's office in Washington, D.C.And theidealism of the movement went out the window as well, when in the 1990smuch more mundane pursuits took over Barry's life, including crack cocaineand prostitutes. One reason for the winding-down of the SNCC may stem fromthe conditions that spawned it.Under an oppressive system of the Jim CrowSouth, the SNCC had a common enemy to fight, and clear goals to achieve. Once the 1964 Civil Rights Act had been passed, and subsequent advanceswere made at the legislative level, the goals and mission became less clearand less defined. Now that so much had been achieved, the SNCC began tofight amongst itself as each faction attempted to secure ever smallerslices of the revolutionary pie.The cautious liberalism of the Kennedyand Johnson administrations proved fatal to the more ambitious fervor ofthe SNCC; the legislation acted almost as a safety valve, relieving thepressure that had encouraged the formation of the SNCC.SNCC studentswere, in their heyday, overcompensating for all the resentment they hadfrom being historically marginalized and held down.SNCC members haddiscovered their voice and used it passionately, but once people startedlistening to them, SNCC found itself in the position of not knowing what tosay. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The Real Louis XVI is depicted in this book.
I love this book.Mr. Hardman depicts Louis XVI, the commonly misunderstood King of France, in a way that actually shows Louis as a real person, instead of a lazy old king who treated his people unkindly.I am a big fan of Louis XVI, and when I got this book, I was sure that I was going to love it.If you buy this book, open the first page, and you will love it.Louis XVI: The Silent King, does not show Louis in the more commonly picture of him as a lazy old king bossing everyone around. This book shows the image of a king young king, who tried his best to treat the French people well, but was overshadowed by several prime ministers and a duke. This book is pictureless, but you can imagine pictures in your head as I did. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Another handsome collection of writings from El Sup
Without a doubt, Subcomandante Marcos is one of the most important present day writers and activists in the Americas. "Our Word is Our Weapon" is a huge collection of his essays and short stories about the Zapatista rebellion in Chiapas. As such, I highly recommend it for peace and justice activists engaged in Latin American solidarity work, the anti-corporate globalization movement and indigenous struggles. Moreover, it is an interesting study of grassroots participatory democracy in action. Read it and be inspired!

5-0 out of 5 stars The man is a myth
Subcomandante Marcos is not just a man, he is a myth in his own lifetime. The cult of personality that surrounds him is completely deserved. His poetic voice is so sharp and poignant you can not help but feel sympathetic for his Zapatistan cause.
5-0 out of 5 stars A movement of Now.

1-0 out of 5 stars Really Poor!
Pay close attention to the other reviewer's comments. This IS one dry, boring book. And that is a shame because this event is a signal event in the course of our Nation's history. This 1839 mutiny by black Africans aboard a Spanish slave ship resulted in a trial before the US Supreme Court that pitted former President John Quincy Adams, who came out of retirement to defend the Africans, against the federal government. Importantly, this trial was held during the time in which the Gag Rule was in effect within the United States Congress, i.e., it was illegal to simply speak about slaverywithin Congress.
2-0 out of 5 stars Great story robbed of its impact
Mutiny on the Amistad: The Saga of a Slave Revolt and Its Impact on American Abolition, Law, and Diplomacy by Howard Jones.3-0 out of 5 stars Dry, but informative.
I saw the movie, and it performed its function well: it piqued my interest. But, of course, being a dramatization, it was not bound by little things like facts; it took the basic story, and made it as interesting anddramatic as possible.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Walker Evans meets Pancho
This is a beguiling look both visually and a somewhat tongue in cheek look at the Mexican Revolutionary Struggle 1911-1922.The somewhat dated account is told in newsreel fashion and backed by a wonderful collage of photos whose captions sound as though they were written by an Economist Photo Editor.John Reed would have enjoyed this account and for a general introductory overview I would strongly reccomend it.Having begun a personal exploration of the Mexican Revolution I found this initial read did much to prime my further interest. Some of the views expressed are perhaps overly enthusiastic in their assumption of what Mexico's future would hold, yet this a quick and interesting primer on the subject.

5-0 out of 5 stars See Them All
All of the players in the drama that was the Mexican Revolution are seen here. Even a rare glimpse of Rudolfo Fierro, Fransisco [Pancho] Villa's right hand assassin. A must for any library of The Revolution, large or small. Seeing these photographs helps to sort out the intertwining labyrinthine series of events of that tumultous era.

4-0 out of 5 stars Swept, how about blown away
As an avid student of U.S. history, there always been a lurking curiosity about our neighbors south of the border. This biography of a war-torn nation explored the lively hood and attitudes of the leaders of Mexico, as well as the suppressed peasants that filled the land.Pinpointing the theme set by Brenner in this interesting dive into Mexico's controversial past would be easily done with one saying, "Viva la revolucion!"Of course, the Spanish translation is not needed, but there must be understanding that this phrase was to be said for over an era that spanned from the time Mexico liberated itself from Spain until the 1940s.Read more
