At last!A reference that includes all the major topics relating to World War II and not just the military and political history.I was 10 when Germany entered Poland and 16 when thewar ended.Yet, at that young age, I followed the war assiduously.I listened to nightly newscasts and read the local newspaper accounts, even making scrapbooks of the war's progress.The Desk Reference of World War II recently published by Harper Collins is the best single reference to that epochal struggle.There have been many books published on the years 1939 to 1945, many dealing with the military campaigns and other with the causes or other specific aspects of the war.This book is not a narrative,although some chapters chronicle the material in story form.Rather, it is a reference; and what a reference it is.The 33 maps are excellent and easily followed.Numerous tables detail a wealth of information.Whatever topic of the war interests you, you will probably find it here.Timelines outline the major events from 1918 to 1950, the political history from 1918 to 1945, and the holocaust.The causes of the war are discussed.Other chapters relate how the countries -- allies and axis -- paid for the war.Treaties, pacts, alliances, charters, and conferences describe how the countries of europe made decisions relating to peace and war, land and aid from Versailles at the end of world War I to the end of the second World War.Read more

Sartre's last major philosophical work.
Sartre wrote volume one of Critique of Dialectical Reason (CDR) between 1957 & 1960, & it was published in France in 1960. The first English edition appeared in 1976. A second, unfinished volume appeared posthumously in 1982.Read more

A Timeless Classic By One Of The Best Biographers In History
Plutarch in his "Lives Of The Noble Grecians And Romans" written around 100 C.E., sheds new light on Greek and Roman history from their Bronze Age beginnings, shrouded in myth, down through Alexander and late Republican Rome.Plutarch is the lens that we use today to view the Greco-Roman past; his work has shaped our perceptions of that world for 2,000 years.Plutarch writes of the rise of Roman Empire while Gibbon uses his scholarship to advance the story to write about its decline.He was a proud Greek that was equally effected by Roman culture, a Delphic priest, a leading Platonist, a moralist, educator and philosopher with a deep commitment as a first rate writer.Being a Roman citizen, Plutarch was afforded the opportunity to become an intimate friend to prominent Roman citizens and a member of the literary elite in the court of Emperor Trajan.
Excellent for the closet Romaphile
Plutarch is not a historian often seen in the diluted cirriculum of the modern American High School, but I would argue that his love of the dramatic, moving battle scenes,and relatively easy-to-comprehend style would do much do endear the modern student to ancient Rome. WHY THE REPUBLIC FELL?
I feel a bit strange writting a review about any classic. Its a bit like writing a review of the Koran or the Bible. There is a reason why all these books are classics, and the reason is that they give some glimpse at the immutable nature of mankind. Read more

Insightful and sometimes funny
First of all I'd like to comment on the previous review. It is clear that the reviewer stopped reading the book within the first chapter as their review is based completely on a poor chapter to begin a book. After you fight your way through that one first chapter and give the book a second chance, you won't be let down -- that is if you find history interesting in the first place. Some chapters are written by actual pirates and some are written by historians. Either way, each chapter is fun and interesting. If youwant to learn about pirates, I recommend this book.

A cheap, hastily piled-together jumble
With The Mammoth Book of Pirates, Lewis has done little but compile several first-hand journal entries relating to historical pirates into one volume.The accounts themselves are often dry, somewhat archaic, and lack any real narrative flair.The book as a whole has no continuity whatsoever, and offers only a brief, vague, and poorly researched introduction to each (apparently) unedited piece.

Atlas?
I've bought this atlas after reviewing all the options available on Amazon. This one was apparently the best one in terms of map quality and information available within; I have not seen any other atlas referenced by other reviewers so I will not make comparisons here.
Atlas of World History
Information is current, colorfully presented, and illustrated in a fascinating manner. Most would be happy to own this highly informative piece of reference material.

I Rate and Compare World History Atlas Books
As a reader I like to have quick reference books at my finger tips including a new version of the Oxford English Dictionary about 3500 pages long - that I use almost daily. So I decided to add a "history atlas". In the process of doing my research I read the other amazon.com reviewers and then made three trips to two large book stores to actually look at the books and get a better feel for which was the best. Massive, attractively priced, and a bit disappointing
First, the good points:this work is huge, well illustrated, and priced at about one third of what a commercial publisher would have to charge for something comparable.Probably no resource has treated the Garden State so thoroughly since the WPA guide was published about 65 years ago. A much needed book for New Jersey!
If you live in New Jersey, or just want to know about the Garden State, this book was a long time in coming and a very welcomed addition to any library.It is amazing how many interesting facts and stories there are about NJ, and all are found in this compact and easy to read book. It is also bursting with interesting photos, facts and figures. Written by many different experts on their own domains of the state, it brings together varied writers and writing styles. It's both a respected academic addition, while being well written and stimulating to just pick up and pick a county!

Amazing guide to everything New Jersey!
I received this as a gift and haven't been able to stop reading it.It makes the most wonderful gift--it must weigh ten pounds! It's a massive guide to everything you'd ever want to know about New Jersey.When you read one entry it leads you to another, and so on, which makes for compulsive reading.There is even an entry for the small town where I grew up, South River, New Jersey.I don't think any family in New Jersey should be withtout this book - it's also great for research papers for school.This encyclopedia should make all New Jerseyans proud of our great state! ... The perfect guide for touring the Normandy battlefields
I used this book as my bible during a multi-day tour of the Normandy battlefields. The level of detail and first rate analysis really set this book apart.I carried this book the entire time I was in Northern France and referred to it constantly.

Messenger's D-Day Atlas has many maps that are very easily read and the text within the book itself is very well written. A list, not a book
This seems like an overgrown doctoral thesis rather than an attempt to describe the life of one of the greatest military rulers the earth has ever seen.As said above, the legendary sacking of Delhi and the Battle of Ankora hardly merit mentioning.
An important contribution to understanding tribal politics
Temur was born in Transoxania near Samarqand, probably in the 1320s or 1330s. He descended from the Barlas tribe of Chinggis Khan's confederation, which through the adoption of Islam had come in close contact with settled populations and learned to participate in their culture. Although the chronicles written by the Persians during (or soon after) Temur's lifetime suggest that he was a conventional Muslim, a careful reading has revealed that more than a hundred years after the death of Chinggis Khan and the conversion of the Chaghatay Mongol tribes in Transoxania to Islam, Temur and his warriors still continued to observe many of the old pagan practices.

A necessary resource for the student of early christianity
This book is indispendable for a person like myself who got a degree in world religions in general, and early christianity in particular, and who, therefore, lacks an in-depth background in the secular history of Greece and Rome. I hesitated a while before writing a review because I had not read a sufficient number of articles. However, the time has come for comment. I find the shorter articles informative, but at times leaving me waanting more. The longer ones are more satisfying. I was tempted to buy the longer version of The Companion (The Oxford Classical Dictionary), but decided against it after reading the reviews. I am happy with my decision. If I want more information on a topic, I can find it elsewhere. I find that The Companion covers more topics than I need, but I enjoy randomingly paging through the book, selecting what strikes my fancy before going to sleep at night.
