5-0 out of 5 stars Socially Constructed Ontology
The possibilities of what can be found to be true or become true have opened up with our advance in technology. There are things that we can make true today that have never been true before. (Idea from Hacking interpreting Foucault). This might also be called Darwinizing Ontology with reference to "Darwinizing Culture: The Status of Memetics As a Science" - by Robert Aunger. So this is still one more the evolution narrative is being used to convert our previous understanding.

5-0 out of 5 stars An all-embracing visual display
It's a religion holding over 6 billion believers plus it's one of the great civilizations of the world - yet Islam remains puzzling to a majority of Westerners, and scholarly histories only increase the mystery. Malise Ruthven and Azim Nanji's HISTORICAL ATLAS OF ISLAM solve this confusion in providing a lovely illustrated historical atlas by a noted scholar of Islam. Maps and eye-catching illustrations accompany clear articles on everything from the early Sufi orders to Islam in the British, Russian and Dutch empires. History blends with social insights and religious coverage in an all-embracing visual display which is highly recommended for high school collections on up.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Encyclopedia of New England
This is a great reference but, unlike many others, it is not simply a list of things with discussion. It is written as a carefully woven story of New England. It is fascinating and wonderful to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Review from SeaCoast NH website
"Finally, a book that defines New England. And it wasn't easy. Just released, this massive volume weighs as much as our cat. It includes 1.5 million words in 22 thematic sections, written and edited by hundreds of experts. "The Encyclopedia of New England" includes 1,300 entries on important people, places, events, ideas and artifacts, plus 500 illustrations and maps on a total of almost 1,600 pages.

5-0 out of 5 stars A light touch with the Grenadiers
Another reviewer tells you what this book contains, so I'll mention that the narrative plus information plus history plus biography is packed into bites ranging in size from a chapter, to a section to a morsel. It is distracting! You start by hunting for information on bearskins (included in 'Grenadier Fabric', where you will find a cartoon, a photo of Crimean War veterans and a specification) and get diverted into an adjacent article on eighteenth century soldiering, and the origin of 'mess'.

5-0 out of 5 stars real political analysis
Unlike the political commentators of the late 20th and early 21st century (watchers of Sunday public affairs programs and AM radio listeners know who they are), the commentators of the 18th century actually had something of substance to say. This was a time when education was rare, but when done was done well. The New American Library does its usual exceptional job in assembling the material in this book including some of the more important selections from the Federalist Papers as well as some of the writings of the anti-Federalists.Here the role of the government and the nature of freedom are really explored.Life was better before politics became about feeling and emotion.Every American should read this book, but only if he wants to really understand the basis of the American experiment.

5-0 out of 5 stars Provides a complete environment for the Federalist Papers
Study of the Federalist Papers, of course included in this two volume series, is a conduit for understanding the American ethic. When the Federalist Papers are viewed as included in this chronological deliberation between the Federalists and Antifederalists, they become even more profound than the enormous depth they can achieve when read alone. The concerns of Brutus and Agrippa are answered, the repititive call for a 'Bill of Rights' revealed. Madison wrote to Jefferson in 1825 defining the Federalist Papers as'may fairly enough be regarded as the most authentic exposition of the text of the federal constituion, as understood by the Body which prepared & the authority which accepted it.' The enormous insight gained from tracking the arguments and concerns of the proposed Constituion , and the responses of the Federalist cannot be easily estimated, yet the result is a much more informed conscience of the American experience.Madison in the same letter mentioned above stated that Federalist Essays did not foresee all the misconstructions which to that date had occured, nor prevent some it did foresee. For the concerned and deliberate citizen of today many of these issues remain, issues such as Federalism are current topics and all too often the opinions of the few become the conscience of the many, examining these volume will do much to alleviate this vexing condition. More alarming is the realization that many of the fears of the Antifederalists have become a reality in todays polity. An excellent and comprehensive collection thank you Bernard Bailyn.

5-0 out of 5 stars Always Relevant . . . and Still a Lively Read at That!
Editor Bernard Bailyn has assembled a first-rate collection of letters, circulars, pamphlets, speeches, and what would be the colonial equivalent of modern op-ed pieces that allows today's readers to witness the foundingof a government through the eyes of (and with the voices of) those who werereally there. But don't be fooled into thinking this is going to be thestilted, polite prose that often belongs to 18th century philosophers ordebaters. Many of the pieces Bailyn has selected are remakrkably spry andteeming with understated wit.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Honest, Insightful and Thought Provoking
Mr. Schivelbusch, in this remarkably well researched and startling book draws parallels between the programs and leadership styles of Adolf Hitler, Benito Mussolini and Franklin Roosevelt. He shows how many similarities there were to be found between each of these very different men. His purpose is not to demonize FDR, excuse the Nazis and Fascists or even to mitigate the failure of the average German and Italian to stand up their leaders. It is, rather, to provide a warning to the future that populism can shift from the benign to the monstrous. It is must reading for the general reader.

5-0 out of 5 stars An entertaining romp through 5000 years of Western Civilization
Jews, God and History is a sobering but very entertaining romp through 5000 years of Western Civilization, which as Dimont so carefully points out, is in many essential respects, the invention of Jews. 5-0 out of 5 stars Simply great
It's hard to believe this was Dimont's first book.As a fan of historical nonfiction, this is one of the best I've read. Its breadth is not limited to the Jewish people but also includes the many cultures into which their story has been incorporated throughout the past- this is one of the most engaging and easily readable works I have come across. It does indeed read more like a detective novel than a historical chronicle, yet it always maintains it's balance and factual integrity. It is about as objective as one can hope to get when it comes to so sweeping and potentially volatile a subject as Jewish history.
5-0 out of 5 stars Good overview of Jewish history for the general reader
This is an outstanding overview of Jewish history for the general reader. It is tremendously rich in information and written with an underlying warmth and sympathy that move the reader greatly. It is a good introduction but should not be the only book the reader reads on the subject. ... Read more

An informative and captivating journey through American history, ending with a heartbreaking collapse into partisan bias.Overall, I very much enjoyed this book and still do.Its year-by-year paragraph format makes it a great little book when you have just a few minutes to read. You can open it up to any page; that is, except the final 30.

3-0 out of 5 stars A very uneven book
This book could be very useful, but often more as a guide to other sources, rather than as a authority in its own right. The appendices, listing numerous references sources as well as a very useful list of relevant museums should be valuable to anyone starting out to do research.Particularly relevant sources are also collected at the end each chapter.
4-0 out of 5 stars Good general writer resource, but not very specific
This is an enjoyable, easy-to-read book to read alongside your historicals. It brings some light to various things like currency, fashion, and food; but knitpickers beware: everything is in broad terms. There isn't a lot of specific detail and the pictures are only somewhat helpful, serving mainly to decorate the book and not necessarily educate. 3-0 out of 5 stars Interesting facts and beginning source for info...
This book is especially slanted towards the Victorian era but does contain some Regency info that is helpful when wanting general information without indepth research. I would recommend backing up any facts with another source though. Some facts weren't dated so it was difficult to ascertain if they pertained to the Regency or Victorian era. All in all an enjoyable dive into history and helpful as simple research for history buffs or writers of light fiction. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Hegel believes Hegel is the only one who got it right
The presumption and arrogance of Hegel's philosophical enterprise is apparent. A powerful and profound thinker he believes that he understands all. It is thesis- antithesis - synthesis and that synthesis is new thesis - antithesis - synthesis. And this logic of mind is the logic of history. And it is all coming to climax in the nineteenth century GermanyHegel is living in.

This book was wonderful. It shouldn't be read as a history but more as a philosophy.Even there, it is a bit short of the greats. Why then do I call it wonderful? It is a view into the past intelligentsia. His history is antiquated; from a modern perspective some of it is wrong. However, it is great to see the history of views about history and the philosophy of them.I am not a pursuer of the P.C., and understand that the context of civilization, at his time, is the molder of his views.Old books such as this are windows into time and are treasures to be cherished. As far as his philosophy I intend to read more of his work in the future to get a better perspective, but I found it interesting.I am on board with Hegel in that we should pursue our Ideal of the Greek Golden Era to maintain a lofty goal for civilization.Which can be summed up by Thucydides in his description ofAthenian life; "We love the beautiful, but without ostentation or extravagance; we philosophize without being seduced thereby into effeminacy and inactivity (for when men give themselves up to Thought, they get further and further from the Practical--from activity for the public, for the common weal). We are bold and daring; but this courageous energy in action does not prevent us from giving ourselves an account of what we undertake (we have a clear consciousness respecting it); among other nations, on the contrary, martial daring has its basis in deficiency of culture: we know best how to distinguish between the agreeable and the irksome; notwithstanding which, we do not shrink from perils."
