1-0 out of 5 stars Why this book sucks....
This book is horribly written, poorly constructed, and really fails to argue a cohesive point. It bounces around from anecdote to story, and if anything, proves the use of history, and condemns heritage.4-0 out of 5 stars Heritage and History-Friends or Foes?
Historian David Lowenthal, author of The Heritage Crusade and Spoils of History, has managed to provide both an engrossing account on the relationship between history and heritage and an entertaining piece ofliterary work. The book comprises of 10 chapters, each one dealing with theevolution that heritage has experienced aswell as the contribution it makesto our lives. After reading this book one comes away with a greaterunderstanding and appreciation for our own inherited events and objects. His use of very relevant and at the same time very interesting examples, ranging from Greek mythology to America's Disney World, allows readers tobring to life the whole concept of heritage and history. I have to admitthat prior to reading this book I had the naieve notion (though commonone)that heritageequated to history. However Lowenthal was able to dispelthis belief by providing vivid accounts on why these two elements are sodifferent yet inextricably intertwined. This he does by highlighting thedifferences in the approach of biasness by both heritage and history andalso the quest for truth and objectivity.Ultimately Lowenthal shows howboth history and heritage work in contemporary society and how theycompliment each other. His humour, knowledge on the subject and his styleof writing makes this book trully a must read for all historians andpotential historians too, infact anyone interested on the topic. EnjoyReading! ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sartre's last major philosophical work.
Sartre wrote volume one of Critique of Dialectical Reason (CDR) between 1957 & 1960, & it was published in France in 1960. The first English edition appeared in 1976. A second, unfinished volume appeared posthumously in 1982.Read more

After reading Bailyn's "ATLANTIC HISTORY: Concept and Contours" many of the more recent histories of North America I've read suddenly make a lot more sense, histories such as Alan Taylor's AMERICAN COLONIES, and WILLIAM COOPER' S TOWN, Linebaugh and Rediker's radical THE MANY-HEADED HYDRA, as well as Victoria Freeman's DISTANT RELATIONS to name just a few.

4-0 out of 5 stars Worthy Topic.
After a brief narrative of early German history, he gives thorough details on the individual peoples or tribal confederations. Actually, you could read ch.15 first and then go to the Introduction. The main emphasis is on the Danubian Goths. He gives a good structural analysis of their institutions and how they blended with Roman culture. His thesis that the majority of Germanic peoples wanted to become part of the Roman World does seem to be valid to this ancient history buff. The German Kings do appear to have tried to maintain both the socio-economic conditions and Administration. It is a vivid picture of an often neglected subject. There is a good bibliography and a plethora of footnotes to research further. The omission of the Franks, who arguably were the most influential is why I'm deducting one star.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, to say the least.
Wolfram tackles the expansive subject of the Barbarians of Europe.A very thorough and well researched book, seamlessly translated from German by Thomas Dunlap.
4-0 out of 5 stars Not easy reading, but worth the effort
My reason for reading this book is that I wanted to know more about Roman Germany after visiting several sites in West Germany.I've had a lifelong interest in the Roman Empire and loved my Latin classes in high school.Since then I've occasionally read books about the Roman Empire.I am certainly not an expert in this field. This particular book is not easy reading. It is a serious, scholarly work in a solemn translation from the German. However, if one has the patience to plow through, it can be quite rewarding and provocative.I felt I was tracing the roots of our own culture when the author showed that so many of the tribes had a religion around a sacred sword. The author didn't mention Excalibur, but it immediately came to mind.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A good place to start
Carr explores many crucial questions in the study of history including subjectivity, point of view, and the limitations sources pose in the construction of the past itself. It's clearly written, concise, and plain-spoken, even as those reading it may be preparing to pursue history into the non-concise, un-plainly spoken world of academia."The serious historian is the one who recognizes the historically conditioned character of all values, not the one who claims for his own values an objectivity beyond history."Highly recommend.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fundamental considerations!
Edward Hallet Carr makes a meticulous analysis and untired exploration around the meaning of the historian and his real role as interpreter . He must consider the story as a musician playing the score becoming in a kind of vanished bridge linking the history and the reader . The subjectivity is very hazardous , but the historian can not just be isolated from the emotion . This delicate balance between the reason and the passion is highlighted with interesting points of view of brilliant authors in this theme .
4-0 out of 5 stars As good as it will get

Thai historian Thongchai Winichakul's account of a critical period in Thai history pairs an originalap proach with thorough academic research.
