4-0 out of 5 stars Why didn't Christ's followers take notes?
One of the mysteries of Christianity is the lack of proof that Jesus ever existed. Most of what we rely on is found in the New Testament, none of which was penned during Christs lifetime. Pauls letters to various Christian groups around the Middle East were written about twenty years after Christs death and Paul never met Christ while He was alive. The four Gospels all appear to date to after 70 A.D., and it is unlikely that they were written by writers who ever met Jesus. So, all of our main writings about Christ are second hand accounts.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Thorough and entertaining
This book treats the subject with an erudition and a level of detail proper of a scholar, yet in such an agile and balanced way that it doesn't bore a layman.
4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent chronicle
This book provides an excellent chronicle of the actual engagement between the English and Spanish fleets. All the details of war (like the number of ships, men, even the quality of food carried on board) are here. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Annoying
I'll read anything to do with the Titanic, but from now on, I'm going to purchase more carefully (or I'll tell other people to do so, this was a Christmas present!) This is one of the most tedious Titanic books I've ever read. (Maybe I've read too many? I own 12!) At 500+ pages long, it doesn't beat the latest Harry Potter book, but with that amount of detail in a book, it took me a fair few weeks to plough through, and that's saying something! The last Titanic book I read was done and dusted in a couple of hours.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A wonderfully in-depth, rich survey of his accomplishments and times
If the name Benjamin Waterhouse doesn't sound familiar immediately, it's because he's a 1754-born doctor who introduced vaccination to the U.S. and promoted the procedure around the country - yet was scorned by the Boston medical establishment. DR. BENJAMIN WATERHOUSE: A LIFE IN MEDICINE AND PUBLIC SERVICE reviews his many achievements, the controversy surrounding them, and his pioneering popularization of the study of natural history in New England. Despite his many achievements, it's surprising to note this is the first major biography covering his life and work - and provides a wonderfully in-depth, rich survey of his accomplishments and times. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars for the knowing
Limerick made a huge mark on the study of the American west with her "Legacy of Conquest" so I'll read anything with her name on it. This book is a compilation of speeches and essays, which she has tried to group together thematically. Each essay on its own is interesting, but as a group, they don't work. Each piece was written for a different audience - an environmental group, a commemorative book, historians. It feels rather disjointed. Also, she is often speaking to people with some background knowledge of her subject matter, so she does not always explain references to books, authors, events. I think if someone was looking for an introduction to Western history, this would be one of those works you would read after having read other works. For the new-comer, Legacy of Conquest is a much better introduction.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Work From the Heart
This book is passionate but eminently fair--a rare combination these days.Whatever your views of cowboys, Indians, gold miners, the U.S.Army,Mexican-Americans, Mormons, Californians, etc. may be, I guarantee you willthink differently about ALL of them and more if you read this book. Iearnestly hope Ms. Limerick will write such a book about the nation as awhole:we need it.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fertile Soil for Academia
In true "new west" fasion, Dr. Limerick uncovers and more important contextualizes some rather uncomfortable but necessary information about darker moments in the history of the West.HoweverLimerick also moves beyond that paradigm and wittily "reads" whywe read certain aspects of history the way that we do. The book definatelymade me think about how I view the West, both historically and in presenttime.I found the insistent cateloging a bit overdone, but much of thebook is laugh out loud funny. If you are used to reading dull academicprose, this is a wonderful breath of Colorado-fresh air (a little dry, alittle hot, but resusitating nonetheless). Best of all, she includes threeaddendum pieces, one of which offers some succinct and much needed adviceon writing readable prose. The other, "Dancing with Professors"a sly little piece she wrote for a mass audience on why professors act theway that they do, is worth the book itself. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars The best biography of the best British historian
This is a beautifully written biography of the most famous British historian of the twentieth century. It takes its place as the best book on Taylor, far better than the earlier books by Robert Cole and Adam Sisman. Kathleen Burk, similarly a prolific and professional historian, is especially good on Taylor's methods of work, and on the importance of his contributions to historical knowledge and debate.Taylor was one of the best ever diplomatic historians, yet he was also an inspirational populariser of history. He combined excellent scholarship with an unusual ability to make history accessible, through his many books, newspaper articles, book reviews, lectures at universities, speeches at meetings, and radio and TV talks and appearances.Diplomatic history is rather unfashionable today, but, as he wrote, it "deals with the greatest of themes - with the relations of States, with peace and war, with the existence and destruction of communities and civilisations." He analysed the profound and specific causes of historical events, so we can say that imperialism ensures that there will be wars, yet that each particular war occurs at a particular time for specific reasons. All his writings explored the causes, histories and outcomes of the world wars, but he also wrote about a huge variety of other themes. Unfortunately, Burk does not mention his many newspaper articles opposing the Common Market, a shared antipathy that largely explained his continuing links with Lord Beaverbrook. She concludes that his three finest books were The Struggle for Mastery in Europe 1848-1918, The Origins of the Second World War, and English History 1914-1945. Other readers will have their own favourites. I would also recommend The troublemakers: dissent over British foreign policy 1792-1939, and Professor A. J. P. Taylor on Europe: the historian who predicted the future.Read more
