Very good
It's a must have if you care for icons. Wish it was hardcover.

Just keep it symbol.
Four stars because a book that is involved with communication does it in such a disappointing way. The cover, text pages, bibliography and index are extremely bland.For instance, the few text pages have a line space between the paragraphs and also an indentation on the first line of each par, the bibliography is set in the same weight of type so punctuation is required, this can nearly be eliminated by using various weights of type to separate the different elements, the twenty-two page index could have been less if it was set in three columns instead of two. A Must for any Interactive Designer!
This is one of the best books on symbols by one of the best designers ofthe 20th Century! It includes everything from technical symbols to hobo andastrology signs. If you are an interactive designer this book will prove tobe a useful tool for research for icon design. ... Read more

My favorite book of all time
I must seem like someone in great need of a unifying philosophy, because several people have tried to lend me theirs. Ex-boyfriends seem to think Daoism just the thing, while acquaintances recommend Jesus (that's why they stall out at acquaintances).After reading this book, though, I can now say, "No thanks.I've got Adam Smith."

This is a great book and I was able to get even more out it since I am one of Dr. Page's students at East Tennessee State.

Extremely helpful book
Marius has written an extremely readable and informative book on the writing of history. He proceeds from showing readers what questions to ask in doing historical research into types of historical writing can be done, from discriptive to argumentitive. Helpful Resource on Historography

Spy vs. Spy
What an excellent read.Alexander Rose creates an entirely new perspective on the Revolutionary War by thoroughly examiningWashington's development of human intelligence known as the Culper Spy Ring.The author succeeds at placing the well-researched details in the context of time, place, and interpersonal relationships so the reader not only understands the motives and decisions made by the principles, but is able to empathize and relate to them as history unfolds.
Too Much Detail
The topic of this book is very interesting: espionage in the Revolutionary War. Unfortunately, "Washington's Spies" goes into so much nit-picking detail that, as the cliche goes, you can't see the forest for the trees. To really get anything out of this book, you'd have to be a *very* dedicated Revolutionary War buff. It didn't have much appeal at all to me as a general reader.
Rare find: Easy-reading Historical Text
If you've slogged through some of Edmund Morris' or David McCullough's work and said, "That was good...but long..." then Mr. Rose's book may be for you.

How to loop.
This book shows by example that iterative algorithms can be derived - you don't need a lucky inspiration to discover them. If you have ever vacillated between putting something in the initialization or body of a loop; or written a loop that doesn't terminate in some cases; this will change your whole approach to coding.

excellent
This is an excellent book in reasoning about programs.It is fairly rigorous and requires a bit of math maturity, and the reader should be warned that formal methods of computer science have evolved quite a bit since 1976.By this I refer to axiomatic program verification and semantics.The key characteristic of this book is that it is built around discussing real world algorithms.This makes the practical consequences of the analysis more evident than in a typical textbook format.

Nice place to visit, wouldn't want to live there
I really wanted to get my hands on this book and now that i have (via interlibrary loan) i want to warn folks that this is not light reading.I found a majority of this book very boring and all but impenetrable.I like Dijkstra's English prose, but when he embarks on the math I wish he'd state the point of each set of formulae above them. It would have also helped if he stressed practical uses of his insights vis-a-vis an actual programming language.This "just shows how much I know" I'm sure, but I suspect many people will feel similarly. FYI: My background is Bachelor's in C.S. with a C.S. GPA of 3.87/4.0.A depressing indictment of U.S. education, Dijkstra would say :) ... Read more

Spirited Account of a Historical Neighborhood
SPIRIT OF HARLEM:A Portrait of America's Most Exciting Neighborhood definitely worth buying
This book has fascinating stories of ordinary and extraodinary people.For each person interviewed, there is a picture or 2 and a story told by that individual. The writer did an excellent job at capturing these stories in first person...i felt like I was actually sitting in front of these people and listening to them tell me about a moving incident, their childhood, reflections on life... Some of these stories made me laugh and some made me cry.It was a neat experience to "meet" all these interesting people.The photography is beautiful
