5-0 out of 5 stars History of Wales,John Davies
Well written and well researched. It is an exhaustive history that will not exhaust you.I am reading it for general interest and find it hard to put down.

4-0 out of 5 stars A History that will Endure
John Davies covers a lot of territory (in terms of time, if not in space) in his "A History of Wales", originally published (1990) in Welsh as "Hanes Cymru". This will probably stand as the definitive general history of this fascinating country for years to come.5-0 out of 5 stars Long overdue
Even in the great 'Celtic revival' of the past generation, where the cultures of the Celtic fringes of Britain and continental Europe have re-exerted themselves in various political and non-political ways, the Welsh revival has been late in coming, and a little less forceful in affect and event.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars stopping to smell the roses pays off
I was in a supermarket in college park, maryland just after thanksgiving when I was desperate for a quick read and perused the paperback selection. Being a Civil War fanatic, I bought this book on impulse perfectly willing to accept a lightweight, fluff read for the afternoon. Imagine my surprise when I found out that this book just grabbed ahold of me and didn't let go until the last page. What Mr. Parry has done is nothing short of mastering the form of first person narrative and has inspired me to begin working on my first novel, also set during the Civil War period.
3-0 out of 5 stars So-So Sophmore Story
Parry's Civil War mystery series continues with this second volume (after Faded Coat of Blue), which once again has Union Army officer Abel Jones investigating murder most foul. The Welshman is a meticulously honest and scrupulous officer (bordering on the priggish), who has been enlisted in the Union's secret service. Here he is sent by Secretary of State William Seward to the far north of New York's Finger Lakes district to find out who killed a Union spy there, and if there's an Irish rebellion brewing. Soon he finds himself highly distracted by an Irish "spiritualist" woman who claims to see spirits hovering around Jones. I'm not a huge fan of this kind of supernaturalism, and it detracts from the gritty authenticity Parry labors so hard to construct in other ways. 5-0 out of 5 stars Parry Does it Again
Like with the first book (Faded Coat of Blue, Owen Parry manges to present a reasonable picture of what civil war America could have been like.It is as close as any or us are likely to get without a time machine. This time the action takes place in up state New York.A rebellion of the Irish is suspected and two agents have already been killed before Able Jones even arrives.Parry introduces historical figures we have read about in a lively and interesting way.He sneaks in history lessons painlessly. This would be useful in a high school setting. Some reviewers complain about the pace, but I believe it is appropriate to the time and place described. This is a series well worth investigating. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars One of the best books writtien about the bohemians
This book tells it like it is. Its so good I bought it twice!!

4-0 out of 5 stars Real life of an artistic community
For someone interested in the 1st. quarter of the past century's artistic and creative environment in Paris - this is a book not to be missed. In spite it's novelistic approach, it resembles the life almost every artist, painter, writer, etc. lived in those days.
4-0 out of 5 stars a real history book
This book is a truly historical and sociologic analysis of the early 20th century movement known as Bohemianism. This movement and the individuals who comprised it are a frequently misrepresented group, and shallower attempts have been made to identify the impetus and driving force behind it and/or reproduce one's own simulacrum overnight. This book, unlike such endeavors, is clearly well-researched, thoughtful and well-articulated.

5-0 out of 5 stars A masterpiece of literature
Don't read this book because you want to get closer to the wealth of Welsh myth.Read this book because it is stunning and beautiful.Reading this book you are in the hands of a competent bard aware of the complexities of human behavior.Walton takes you on an adventure complete with misplaced love, tragic deaths, and heroic splendor. She has taken the bare bones of myth and altered little by added a lot and crafted a masterpiece of literature.

5-0 out of 5 stars I loved it!
I was very impressed with this book. Walton does a wonderful job of reworking the original Welsh legends into four stories. Naturally, she allows herself certain artistic freedoms, such as interpreting disputed aspects of the legends in a way that seems most plausible to her. However, her skill and her imagination make me gladly accept her interpretation. 5-0 out of 5 stars Breath Taking!
Ms. Walton does an incredible job of taking Welsh Mythology and breathing life into it making it a novel of unsurpassed proportions. You encounter hidden lessons that actually sent shivers through me.This book by no means should replace the Mabinogion's translation by Lady Charlotte, which is a more literal translation. However, Ms. Walton provides insight to the myths and is quite inspiring in doing so.This book just might change your life in some ways. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Fine Book on the Apollo Scientific Experiment
While much has been written about the Apollo missions to the Moon, most of these books have focused on either the spacecraft the got us to the Moon (Moon Lander or Stages to Saturn) or the astronauts (autobiographies by Collins, Cernan, Aldrin) and to a lesser degree, Mission control and the flight controllers.Furthermore, thousands upon thousands of scientific and technical papers have been and are still be written from the data collected by the various experiments that were conducted on the lunar surface. The story of how these experiments got to the moon, which ones were chosen and why, the people who developed this experimental packages and the internal NASA struggles to even get these experiments to the Moon has never been documented, at least in much detail. In his book, the author, Donald Beattie who was the program manager for the Apollo Lunar Surface Experiments, details all decisions, meetings, NASA in-fighting and the like that got these important, and initially overlooked surface experiments on the flights to the Moon. The author draws upon his extensive library of NASA memos, publications and the like to craft a really fine book.5-0 out of 5 stars Find Out What the Astronauts Did While on the Moon
I first saw this book while at my local library and after glancing through it I decided it might be worth a quick look. Once I got home and started reading I quickly discovered that this was no dry Science/History book by some old college professor but a great read that tells a part of the Apollo story that is far to often ignored. 5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Review of Another Dimension of Apollo
The Apollo program was not launched for scientific reasons but plenty of excellent science was carried out during it.This book, written by a NASA insider, gives a good guide to all the planning and development that went into the scientific investigations. In addition, it provides some very interesting material on planned longer duration Apollo and post Apollo missions, including lunar bases.Overall, this book is a great addition to any Apollo enthusiast's library. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars "My subject is of man and humankind."
Don't be misled by the title of this book, nor by what others may have told you about it. In the first place, it isn't so much a book about 'Melancholy' (or abnormal psychology, or depression, or whatever) as a book about Burton himself and, ultimately, about humankind. Secondly, it isn't so much a book for students of the history of English prose, as one for lovers of language who joy in the strong taste of English when it was at its most masculine and vigorous. Finally, it isn't so much a book for those interested in the renaissance, as for those interested in life. Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars AMUST for genealogists studying Welsh ancestors in OHIO.
A graduate thesis that is easy to read and follows the travels of Welshmeninto PA and OH and the communities they founded. Why would someone buy landas poor as what they left behind? Why settle in the middle of America? Whyleave all that is familiar behind? Not uncommon questions for anyonestudying their ancestors, but the Welsh reasons, while often similar toother groups, are still refreshing in this work. Ms Knowles has helpedthe genealogist greatly with this work. ... Read more
