A convincing argument
Having made up my mind in advance to approach Braham's book with outright scepticism I put it down after reading with a newfound perspective on this troubling issue. The arguments contained within are surprisingly convincing and well-constructed. The book effectively demonstrated to me that many generally-held beliefs about Vatican policy during WWII are based on little more than second-hand and often erroneous information. Triumph!
"Triumph in Defeat" is a triumph in its own right. This meticulously researched, carefully balanced, and clearly presented examination of the role played by the French minority at Vatican I is a must read for students of this often cited -- and often misunderstood -- council. By permitting the reader to see Vatican I through the eyes of these bishops, O'Gara enables him/her to understand why these churchmen claimed to have "triumphed in defeat," and, what is more, why such an eminent scholar as the late J. M. R. Tillard could subsequently claim that "Vatican II has been on may crucial instances the posthumous victory of [this] enlightened group." In a very real sense, "Triumph in Defeat" is a case study of how invaluable a faithful minority is to the Church when the passions of the proverbial "moment" threaten to drown out the small, still voice with which God so often speaks to His people, calling them to be of one mind and one heart in Christ. In the present moment, when the issues of humility and infallibility, authority and dissent, primacy and conciliarity are debated with no less passion than they were little more than a century ago, O'Gara's work proves itself to be as well worth reading as the lessons her study offers are worth heeding.

The book attempts to redefine the catholic meaning of infallibility as taught at Vatican I in order to strike a balance of authority within the Catholic Church. Another One for the Specialist
Frank Cass among other things publishes several scholarly journals including Intelligence and National Security, one of the bulwarks of the historical genre. Ocasionally one of the issues is repackaged and presented as a standalone volume. They consist of many short articles. Insight into how Hitler regarded the Vatican.
Here's factual research on Nazi espionage against the Vatican, but little insight about true collaboration between Vatican officials, including Pope Pius XII, and Nazi secret police. Interesting insights into how Hitler'sagents worked at cross purposes.They did break Vatican radio codes earlyin the war.Nothing here will directly implicate the Vatican's policiesregarding ultimate sympathy with Nazism. ...
