4-0 out of 5 stars This will make a very nice gift to your mother in law
This is the kind of book you can offer to any delicate person (such as your mother in law). Be sure she will say nice things about you after this. The book is the archetype for coffee table book. It will inspire you to goand visit Vatican palace and churches. You will appreciate so much to"read" (mainly pictures) it if you visited the place itself. Buythis book if you plan to visit Roma; don't bring the book with you (HEAVY).Read it in bed when you come back and try to recover from jet lag.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Amazing!

2-0 out of 5 stars The man behind the liturgical reform
Controversy swirled around the late Annibale Bugnini. As Secretary of the Consilium, the group charged with carrying out the reforms mandated by Vatican II, he was in a position to influence exactly how the reform was carried out.He was rewarded with an archbishop's mitre and made first secretary to the Congregation of Divine Worship. This congregation was later suppressed by Paul VI, and Archbishop Bugnini was exiled and made papal nuncio to Iran.4-0 out of 5 stars Never answers the question of "why" of the liturgical reform
This book tells plenty about the who, how, when and where of the liturgical reform. The all important question of "why" is never answered and that is the great mystery of Vatican II and the succession of popes who feel they must uphold the distorted vision of Bugnini rathering than the decrees of the Council itself.3-0 out of 5 stars Annibale Bugnini: The unfavored Son
More is to be had in this book's footnotes than in the text itself. There Bugnini is most forthright, apparently without ever being able to come to truthful conclusions, about his prideful, scheming plans to detach the liturgy renewal from the natural, historic liturgical progression that has always be in motion.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Many photos of the restored frescoes in great detail with fine articles
The huge project of the cleaning and restoration of the Sistine chapel has been completed for more than decade (of course it is continuous and ongoing). It was a huge project that aroused fiery controversy.Even though the ceiling had become almost completely obscured by centuries of smoke and repeated applications of varnish (early attempts to protect the treasured frescoes), some felt strongly that the restoration proposed would ruin the ceiling. In one way, it does make sense that the ceiling that generations had known was the work then on display. The yellowed color scheme and dark views were all that anyone living and the generations previous had known.

This book is the unveiling of Michelangelo's unappreciated genius. The glory of the cleaned and restored Sisten Chapel bursts forth in the high quality pictures throughout the book.Because it was written by an artist, there are lovely little bits and pieces one does not normally find (such as a page of faces . . .).I was so smitten with this book that I read it cover to cover in one evening. It is well written, clear, concise, and understandable without being condescending. This collection of picutres of the restored Sistine Chapel is wonderful. It surpassed all my expectations.

5-0 out of 5 stars STUNNING
This book was illustrated after the Sistine Chapel was cleaned andMichelangelo's vibrant colors were brought back for us to enjoy.Theauthor gives a short history of Michelangelo's life, places him in thecontext of the rennaisance that he was such a major part of.She showssome of his other works, but this is all unimportant. What is the grabbingpoint of this book are the photographs of the Sistine Chapel after thecleanning. The colors that glow from the paintings Michelangelo did are sobeautiful and unexpected from what we have seen of the Chapel before thecleaning.Michelangelo's genuis shows through at last and this book givesyou the chance to enjoy every bit of it.The photography is excellent andfor such a small price the whole beauty of the ceiling is yours to enjoyover and over.I highly recommend this jewel of a book. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars For the true info-junkie...
I read this book cover-to-cover as soon as I bought it. I love things that are organized and encyclopedic, and though I'm not Catholic, I love this book. I frequently look up information in it, it contains not just information on Popes, but many Vatican buldings, departments, and artwork. This would be invaluable to anyone taking a trip to the Vatican. I have also read Bunson's Encyclopedia Sherlockiana and found it to be equally detailed and informative. I heartily recommend these two books to anyone who is even remotely interested in either subject. After you're through, you'll be more than remotely interested, you'll be hooked. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Rebirth of modern scholarship in the Renaissance
Anthony Grafton's "Rome Reborn" is not just a simple and well done 'exhibition catalogue' intended to be a luxurious appendix to the famous exhibition of 1993 held in the Library of Congress. On the contrary, his 'magnum opus' not only exceeds by far the boundaries of this genre, but also laid the new foundations of modern scholarship in the field of Renaissance studies focusing on Rome and its cultural rebirth in the Renaissance. In combining several methodologies which have been used separately in various disciplines before, Grafton showed himself once more the absolute master of contemporary Renaissance Studies in its broadest sense. His "Rome Reborn" should therefore be on the desk of everyone occupied (professionaly or in another way) with the cultural history of the Renaissance.

5-0 out of 5 stars Rome Reborn
This is an excellent book about the history of writing and books not just in the Vatican but in General. It has wonderful prints and photographs of ancient texts and very in depth histories. I was most pleased with itstreatment of classical mathematics and extant Greek writings. In generalthis book is an interesting read, though may be a bit academic for theaverage reader. ... Read more

What the Vatican Archives Really Say About Pope Pius XII5-0 out of 5 stars An exhaustive treatment of a controversial topic
This book presents the facts - and lots of them - straight from the Vatican Archives as it examines the role of Pius XII and the Vatican during World War II. What emerges is a picture that is wholly at odds with what the popular myths that have been foisted upon us by Catholic-bashers operating under a pretense of objectivity and phony moral outrage. Pius XII is shown to be the hero he truly was - a holy man of God, doing the best that could be expected incredibly difficult circumstances.

5-0 out of 5 stars Heroic Charity
The book provides exhaustive documentation on the diplomatic work of PiusXII to save persecuted Jews and Christians during World War II.Itespecially shows how the nuncios in France, Hungary, and Turkey formeddiplomatic coalitions to rescue thousands of persecuted Jews.Pius'sdiplomatic caution will not suit everyone, but it is indisputable that hesaved thousands of Jewish lives by this means. This is a story of heroiccharity with a good bit of cloak-and-dagger thrown in. ...
