5-0 out of 5 stars A must read for Ukrainian diaspora
I grew up knowing that I was a Canadian "of Ukrainian descent" but all through my childhood, I didn't quite know what that meant. I did know that my father was born in the prairies, and I'd heard stories about my grandfather escaping serfdom in the old country only to be unjustly imprisoned once he came to Canada.4-0 out of 5 stars Controversial Interpretation of Ukrainian Canadian Society
I could hardly put this book down. I am a Canadian of distant Ukrainian heritage and was not sure that I would find this new study of the Ukrainian experience in Canada all that different from others I have looked at over the years. Was I wrong! Professor Luciuk has re-interpreted the entire breadth of this ethnic minority's history in Canada, and emphasized the multiple interventions made into Ukrainian Canadian society by the federal government, from jailing innocent immigrants as "enemy aliens" during Canada's first national internment operations of 1914-2920, to creating the Ukrainian Canadian Committee in 1940, to exploiting the postwar immgirants (the DPs, or Displaced Persons) for anti-communist purposes at home and propaganda abroad while, at the most senior levels of officialdom, being utterly indifferent or even against independence for Ukraine, public pronouncements to the contrary! This book is extensively footnoted, which, at first, I wondered about, but then I got into these materials and found almost another book, rich in additional evidence about the themes this author covers in the main text. Some readers won't like Professor Luciuk's forthright style, or how he explodes some of the persistent myths and stereotypes about this community (eg the canard that thousands of Nazis hid in North America after the war is a fiction)but for anyone interested in Ukrainians in the diaspora, or 20th century immigration and ethnic history, this is a must have book. Highly recommended. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting!
In November 2004 the world watched as a politician in Ukraine, the second most powerful country in the former Soviet Union, wrested the presidency through popular and peaceful downtown protests in Kiev. After a second and unrigged election, Viktor Yuschenko became president in December, and, in April 2005, he and his Chicago-born wife were warmly received by the White House and Congress.
4-0 out of 5 stars Miller tells it like it is in Eastern Europe
Terrific! What a great book. All the elements of an exotic Paul Theroux travel adventure, combined with the High Noon suspense of a race against the clock, with plenty of chuckles along the way. Miller's experience and characters are convincing proof to me that what I'm living here in the Czech Republic is not just some weird, time-warped dream. Anyone coming to Central Europe had better read it, and anyone who's been here will enjoy it. Also, as someone approaching retirement, I was completely unaware of the activities of the International Executive Service Corps and will certainly keep it in mind as a productive alternative to golf. An entertaining and informative read. A masterful job.

5-0 out of 5 stars The dawn of a new internationally co-dependent economy
Journey To A Closed City With The International Executive Service Corps details the travel experiences of Russell R. Miller who is a retired executive who has volunteered his time in the International Executive Service Corps, as well as serving as an advisor with the World Bank, the United Nations Development Program, and the Vienna-based United Nations Industrial Development Organization. Detailing the dawn of a new internationally co-dependent economy and the spread of globalization through experienced eyes, Journey To A Closed City is an engaging and informative tale of growth and new experiences, as well as a broad-scale, on-going economic evolution. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars An outstanding biography of a great East-European prelate
It is to the detriment of modern history that ANDRII SHEPTYTS'KYI is little known in Western nations. Sheptyts'kyi stands as a collossal figure in the life of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church, and as a significantbridge between Orthodoxy and Catholicism. However, Andrii Krawchuk's textgoes beyond the restricted readership of those interested in Church mattersor Christian ethics. The text brilliantly highlights Sheptyts'kyi'sstruggle to combat the spread of communism and fascism during his 44 yeartenure as the Head of the Ukrainian Greek-Catholic Church. Krawchuksuccinctly portrays how Sheptyts'kyi tackled the issues of nationalism, andhow this could best be focussed toward the improvement of social justicewithin a nation, as well as how it could also lead eventually to a sense ofinternationalism - a respect for all nationalities. Later in the textKrawchuk describes how the Ukrainian Metropolitan sought to protect notonly his own parishoners but also those Ukrainian citizens who wereOrthodox and Jewish. In fact Sheptyts'kyi's resolute stance against theNAZI persecution of the Jews, saw him challenge Heinrich Himmler himself, only to be warned by the SS leader that but for Sheptyts'kyi's age he wouldhave been executed. Details of Sheptyts'kyi's network of clergy whofalsified Baptismal forms and smuggled Jewish children to monasteries, makefor a better read than "Schindler's Ark". I thoroughly recommendthis text to any person wishing to read a work which is uplifting - it isfundamentally a tale of one man's desire to see the message of the Gospelplaced firmly here on earth; one man's odyssey against two evil regimeswhich traversed his beloved nation. "Christian Social Ethics inUkraine", is in short the saga of a truly great 20th Century figure, perhaps with the hindsight of history - to be considered amongst thegreatest. ... Read more
