Great reading--very exciting
This is a story of a young women being persued by the Nazi's and her ability to get away from them.She was brought to jail for questioning but with a great deal of bravery she was able to get away.A MUST READ.

Received the Carl Sandberg Award in Chicago.
I couldn't put the book down until I read the last page.An exciting adventure of a young lady trying to avoid the Nazi's.

A memorial to those murdered
Life Death Memories is the deeply personal and candid recollections of Thomas T. Hecht, a Jewish man who grew up in a Polish shetl during the murderous years of Hitler's horrific and genocidal "Final Solution". A Masterpiece
Perhaps the reason a scant handful of reviewers here do not appreciate this book, saying that it says nothing new, is because Mr. Szporluk himself is the founder of the way modern historians and political scientists view and analyze Eastern Europe. If this book reads familiar, it is because Mr. Szporluk's theories are the foundation upon which other work has been based. A brilliant readand a keystone in Eastern European history.

Poorly Written
What is this book about?The writing is so poor, it's difficult to say.This author needs to go back and learn basic grammar and sentence structure before trying his hand at some very compex issues.

Szporluk Illuminates as Do Few Others
This is an uncommonly fine set of essays.Their subjects are some of the more important contemporary and historical connections and relationships in Eastern Europe, and the essays leave the reader's understanding of that part of the world much enriched.Among the connections and relationships Szporluk explores are:Ukraine-Russia; Poland-Ukraine; Russia-Poland; and Czarist Russia-the USSR.The essays, wirtten over the last 25 or 30 years, are marked by: an encyclopedic familiarity with all of the types of literature that have bearing on his subjects; a healthy respect for facts--particularly some that were long obscure to most observers--and where they lead (in the sense of not treating facts as mere fodder to be crammed into some favorite theoretical framework); and, a highly thoughtful and perceptive analysis that interrelates facts with facts, and facts with theory.If you're interested in Eastern Europe, a book not to be missed. ... a larger-than-life biography

The best book that I ever read!
This book is the best book that i ever read. It outlines all the horrible things that the Soviet Union did to the Tatars. I believe that all people should read this book, and relize that not much has changed!

Almost complete
Having Crimean Tatar ancestry I was very excited by reading this book. It focuses on the history after the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia. I wish they paid more attention on the Crimean Khanate history but this couldbe the topic of another book. ... Read more

Splendid Read
This is history at its greatist, at its finest and purest; though amort, unquestionably, Prusin has the rare skill of analyzing the topic in the powerful and fair methods that men have tried to accomplish since the begining of writing yet few have since achieved. Excellent short history
This is an excellent short history of Ukraine's early 20th Century armies.Sometimes (most times) the side that they were on was not always the "right" side. But in the face of Tsarist and then Soviet occupation Ukrainians had difficult choices to make.As an American of Ukrainian ancestry I am proud of every Ukrainian soldier no matter what uniform they wore.In their own way they were fighting to liberate their or their parental homeland.This book gives a good overview of how the struggle began in earnest; it is well written, historically accurate and wonderfully illustrated.Nice job to all the contributors. ... "An Incredible Story of Courage"
Well done story that does justice to the men who gave their lives to fight the worst nuclear disaster ever.The book details the exploits of two helicopter test pilots, Anatoly Grishenko and Gourgen Karapetyan.It starts out slow, showing their lives in the Soviet Union just a couple months before the Chernobyl disaster.They are not supermen or people looking to be heroes.They come off as average guys who happen to have one heck of an extraordinary job.Both are called into service to help seal the exposed reactor.Unfortunately, Anatoly develops cancer because of it.I was totally amazed at the level of dedication Gourgen had to get the help his friend needed, any way he could.Quite frankly, he took a lot of big risks doing it, since Glasnost and Perastroika were just beginning in the Soviet Union.Gourgen truly defines the meaning of the word friend by his deeds to save Anatoly.Also, can't forget the dedication of the people in the U.S. who worked to bring Anatoly to the States to get him the treatment he needs (including the book's author). Sacrifice: The True Story of Courage over Chernobyl
The story reads like a Tom Clancey novel, but unfortunately the story is true as well as tragic. You can't help feeling the intensity,courage, joy and sadness of the characters. As a reader you quickly feel part of the story. I hope that Cap Parlier continues to write about subjects that he feels passion for.
