4-0 out of 5 stars A major work on a little-known region of Europe
Shandor tells the modern history of a section of Ukraine now known as the Zakarpatskaya Oblast. This is the fascinating story of a country that has been a part of five different nations in the 20th Century and whose peopletoday live in six different countries. It was a part of the HungarianEmpire until the end of the First World War. After the war it was promisedautonomy as Subcarpathian Ruthenia, the third part of Czechoslovakia, butthis was never realized until the break-up of this country in 1938-39. Thenfor three days in March of 1939 it was the independent country ofCarpatho-Ukraine, until the Hungarian Army crossed the border to reclaimit. In 1945 the Czechs and Russians agreed to make it part of the Ukrainewithout consulting its people. Shandor was the Ruthenian delegate in Praguebetween the two wars and has quite a tale to tell. Occasionally, the readeris swamped with names and details mentioned to prove Shandor's point ofview. The presentation could have been more balanced, but overall it isfascinating reading. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Obviously these one-star reviews are missing the whole point of the book!
A great book that shows readers a look into a side of the holocaust that is somewhat left untaught. How people can accuse Martin of not including facts and figures and making assumptions obviously have done little to no research on the topics he discuses in his book. It's hard to collect facts and evidence on something that happend 50 years ago on a side that is shoved under the carpet.
1-0 out of 5 stars Ignore the 5 star reviewers. They do not read history!
As has already been mentioned --- the author makes numerous assumptions, but offers no proof, because he apparently feels that facts and figures are not required in a holocaust book.
1-0 out of 5 stars Provides no data for claim
Dean makes very specific accusations in the very subtitle of this book, yet he provides no documentation to back his assertions. I expect more from a scholar. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The true-life memoir of a boy who lived in hiding for nearly three years in Nazi-occupied Zloczow
Flawlessly translated from the original Hebrew, 1111 Days in My Life Plus Four is the true-life memoir of a boy who lived in hiding for nearly three years in Nazi-occupied Zloczow, a small Polish village now in the Ukraine. Hidden with his family and a number of other Jews by a Catholic family, he survived and moved to Israel in 1957. 1111 Days in My Life Plus Four reveals his inner life and the permanent impression his past years of hiding left upon him. A dark revelation of the difficulties of coping with the painful past, 1111 Days in My Life Plus Four is vivid and recommended for Holocaust studies collections.

5-0 out of 5 stars In a word: Compelling
This novel is the story of an Eastern European Jewish man (Max), who is imprisoned by the Nazis during WW2 and by the Soviets immediately after. His story is amazing and is being told to famed Nazi hunter and the author of this book, Simon Wiesenthal, in the 1960's.Wiesenthal's involvement surrounds the Nazi camp commander who persecuted Max and his fiance. The Nazi, Werner Schulze, resurfaces as a German plant manager twenty years after the war and Wiesenthal must decide whether or not he has sufficient evidence to prosecute him.5-0 out of 5 stars A Love Story born out of the Holocaust
I read this book many years ago and even now I consider it a much ignored love story with a difference.Max and Helen are survivors of the Holocaust who are separated during the war and both end up in Concentration Camps.Max believes Helen to be dead but many years later finds out that she isstill alive and goes looking for her. What starts off as a journey intoboth their pasts becomes a struggle for them to forget what the war and theatrocities committed have done to them both as individuals; especially asHelen's son is also the son of her Nazi rapist, something that Max findshard to accept. This is poignant love story with a bitter-sweet twist, andyou are left wondering if Max and Helen will ever get back together?Theending is left open, and this to me is the saddest ending of all. SimonWiesenthal proves himself to be a damn good writer of fiction as well asfact about the Holocaust and its tragic consequences. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Putting History Right
This book examines Operation Citadel and the linked battles for the Mius and August battles around Bogodukhov. The book is extremely well researched and this research throws serious doubts over Russian claims in regards to the battle of Kursk and especially the confrontation of armour at Prochorovka. Studies of SS records do not substantiate Russian claims of 400 German tanks destroyed at Prochorovka, however a single Panzerkorps effectively annihilated the armour of the 5th Guards Tank Army where between 600-650 tanks were destroyed.
4-0 out of 5 stars Very good book.
I think that this is very good book.
5-0 out of 5 stars Unbiased view of the Ostfront.
Mr. Nipe Jr. has put together a superb book on Waffen-SS units fighting on the Eastern Front. Prejudices shown by other authors are completely and utterly put to rest.

5-0 out of 5 stars A real hasid writes of a real hasid
Because Rabbi Miles Krassen is a true practiced hasid and deep contemplative his writing about the earlier hasids of the Hasidic movement gives us a genuine entrance into that world. It is not just an academic tome but has the quality of writing of a true scholar combined with the personal wisdom and understanding necessary to fully address these ideas.Of all the books in English that I have read on this topic, it is rare to find that combination. It is not a book to be read only once, but studied and meditated on again and again.I have read it now 4 times and teach from it often.I have recommended it to every group that I teach.

5-0 out of 5 stars Articulating the Ineffable
Miles Krassen's book, "Uniter of Heaven and Earth: Rabbi Meshullam Feibush Heller of Zbarazh and the Rise of Hasidism in Eastern Galicia" is a masterful presentation of the thought of an early Hasidic master.Heller was part of the circle of closest associates of the Baal Shem Tov though not having spent time with the founder of hasidism himself.A study of his thought then gives us a glimpse into one of the earliest directions of Hasidic thinking before it started to gain some of its narrower focus in the hands of the students of the Maggid of Mezheritch. As such, we find expressions of an ascetic orientation and a harshness of approach that are not so characteristic of the teachings normally attributed to the Besht, the Maggid, and the disciples of the latter. In broadening the picture of early Hasidic thinking Krassen has done a real service for Jewish studies scholarship and the Jewishly educated lay reader.5-0 out of 5 stars Great Choice for both Serious Students and Spiritual Seekers
I've found this comprehensive and accessible study to be one of my favorite texts (I'm a rabbinical student with a fairly extensive reading list). I've just completed a third reading of the book and I find that as my learning deepens, so does my appreciation of this work. Rabbi Miles Krassen, PhD brings both the dedication and thoroughness of an academic and the depth of understanding of a serious contemplative practice to his work, a rare and deeply appreciated combination. I strongly recommend The Uniter of Heaven and Earth both to those interested in the study of Hasidism and to those interested in deepening a spiritual practice. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Oddly centered account.
The Carpatho-Russians were Orthodox from their conversion to Christianity as a result of the missionary efforts of the Eastern Roman missionary brothers Sts. Cyril and Methodius c. A.D. 800 until the creation of the Eastern European Unia in the Early Modern period through the military aggression of Poland-Lithuania (at the beck and call of the Roman Papacy). However, there now are a considerable number of them who have made their way back to the One, Holy, Catholic, Apostolic Church -- the Orthodox Church. For one who wants the perspective of the Uniates, this book is a good one; for people who want the story of the miraculous return of some Carpatho-Russians to Holy Orthodoxy, try _Good Victory - Metropolitan Orestes Chornock & the American Carpatho - Russian Orthodox Greek Catholic Diocese_ (1985) by Lawrence Barriger. This volume, on the other hand, is written by an apologist for the Unia -- the Eastern European version of the Spaniards' mistreatment of the natives of Latin America.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Shadow People
Fr. Pekar gives a stunning and vibrant view of aturbulent history of a people who have been up till now relegated to the shadows of both European and Catholic history. He tracesthe story of the Carpatho-Rus as both anhistorian and as a theologian, carefully sorting and placing together thoseforces that helped to shape their identity as well as their survivalagainst numerous odds.I highly recommend this book for those who wish toknow the struggles of these people as well as for those who seek tounderstand the true universality of the Catholic Church. ... I found this hard to put down, that plus thebackground detail for the Crimean War, nineteenth century England, and the inefficiency of armies, makes for an interesting book. I had been an unknowing receiver of the Tennysonian myth created by his famous poem written shortly after the famous charge, and it is actually quite illuminating to check the mental phantom of the saga against the facts. With imperial overtones, the Crimean War begins as gunboat diplomacy. The depiction of the officer class is a snapshot of the British class system, and the defunct policy of allowing the aristocracy to purchase offer commissions. With the resulting sadsacks in charge the misteps towards the famous cavalry charge are set. The ambiguity lies in the blunder mixed with Tennysonian echoes (triggered by the reports of the famous Times journalist William Russell). The minute by minute account of the dread seven minutes of the fatal attack is almost cinematic, and fairly well wraps up the tale.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Rivetting Account Of The Ill-Fated Charge
Brighton briefly sketches the events that led to the Crimean War, but never loses focus on the Light Brigade. His account of the famous Charge is very detailed, and extends for over 100 pages. He skilfully allows the original participants (through their memoirs) to describe the action, and thus his descriptions have a first-hand 'feel' to them absent in some other books on the Charge. Brighton weaves these accounts together effectively. Despite the extraordinary detail of the section on the Charge, I never lost interest -- and was filled with admiration for the cavalrymen who rode up the valley and then down it in the hellfire of the Russian guns. Brighton examines Nolan's actions in (and after) relaying Raglan's orders to Lucan, and although apportioning most of the blame on Lucan, doesn't adopt a one-eyed strategy of making scapegoats of people. Instead, his discussions appear to be well balanced.
