5-0 out of 5 stars The recipient loved it
I bought this as a gift for a friend who helped a great deal with my wedding, advising me of dress styles, hair styles, fashion from this era, dances, music, food, and everything in between, as well as arranging all the flowers for the wedding! She was a godsend! When I gave her the book, her jaw dropped and she was so excited to get it... she said she had been wanting it forever. As I consider her quite knowledgeable about the subject matter of this book, and as it came highly recommended by her, I would say that it's a great book to have if this is something you are interested in as a serious hobby or more.

5-0 out of 5 stars The best place to start for Elizabethan Costuming
This is one of the best books ever written on the subject of Elizabethan Costuming. It mainly contains all of the details of Queen Elizabeth I wardrobe but it has unique points in the society that surrounded the dresses. This book helps to explain the Gloriana image that became so popular and it helps us to understand all the little details that went into the dress of the period.Detailing costumes using portraits and explaining how the fashion progressed makes this book a must for anyone interested in Renaissance Faires and the nobility. The only drawback is that very very few of the portraits and pictures are in color.I think a total of about 7 are in color the rest is in black and white. The only way to make this book more appealing and usable would be to put all of the portraits and pictures in color, but that would make the book even more expensive. After this must have book the 2nd on the shelf should be a J. Hunniset book (the lady who did all the costuming for Elizabeth R and The Six Wives of Henry the VIII produced by BBC).Next, any Janet Arnold book.Last, would be the Norris book:Tudor Costuming and Fashion (although most of this book is very outdated it is nice to look at).All of these are must haves and will make a well rounded library.Dispite the high price of the book it is worth posessing.Enjoy.

5-0 out of 5 stars Such An Amazing Resource!
For the historical costumer focused on 16th century clothing, this is the "bible" hands down.Big, expensive, and filled with the usual detail that is the hallmark of Janet Arnold, this is one very worthwhile investment for the serious costumer. This book has one tiny drawback, in that it focuses entirely on women's fashion in the 16th century as viewed through the wardrobe accounts of Queen Elizabeth I and some of her contemporaries. Therefore, it has nothing to say on the topic of men's clothing, which is an unfortunately neglected aspect of 16th century research.Read more

John Cooke, who held progressive views of the law that were well ahead of his time and who was a key actor in the trial of King Edward I, is rightly rescued from the dusty corners of English history by the very knowledgeable Mr. Robertson. The heretofore forgotten Cooke emerges a fitting hero to all who believe in the rule of law.

Editorial Review

Our term "guy," slang for any man, comes from the name of Guy Fawkes, the alleged ringleader of the bungled plot to blow up King James I and the subject of Bonfire Night, the odd English holiday celebrated on November 5 by burning the execrable Guy in effigy. This and other facts tumble from the pages of this fascinating account of the Gunpowder Plot, written by the distinguished novelist and historian Antonia Fraser. Fraser delves into English religious history to show the harsh persecution of Roman Catholics under Jacobean rule and how James I disappointed those Catholics who hoped for a more liberal reign. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Timely History
Antonia Fraser is one of the handful of historians who is also a great storyteller. While she is not quite in the league of Jonathan Spence or Barbara Tuchman, Fraser can take interesting characters and episodes from history and mold them into compelling, readable books. Fraser has done as much for the wives of Henry VIII and with her book Warrior Queens, and I think Faith and Treason is even better.
4-0 out of 5 stars Great book!
I just finished Faith and Treason (due to seeing V for Vendetta and wanting to know more about Guy Fawkes and the Gunpowder plot) and it is a very very good book. I learned so much and found the whole book interesting. My only complaint(though it's not really a complaint) is that I like some other readers had a hard time remembering names of people and who they where related or married to. But I highly recommend this book and opens your eyes more toward religious struggles and other things. It is very well written with great facts about that fateful day.

5-0 out of 5 stars History at its best!!
In addition to being a great account of an historical incident from the early C17, this book lays a foundation for understanding English history into the 20th Century.

4-0 out of 5 stars A SUPERB BIOGRAPHY!!
I bought Alison Weir's THE SIX WIVES OF HENRY VIII to read at the beach. I thought it would be helpful to have a refresher course on Henry VIII and his ladies from one of thebest popular historical writers and scholars. I could hardly put this book down. It is excellent and surpasses most novels in readability and intrigue. Since Henry was married to Katherine of Aragon the longest, there is more about her and I learned more than ever before about that stubborn, passionate, implacable queen. Henry seemed to have so much guilt attached to his marriage with her that one concludes that she was, as he himself said "buxom" in the bedchamber. She was a saint but also a woman. When Anne Boleyn enters the story, one tragedy unfolds after another. However, Weir did not explore all of the sufferings the English people experienced due to Henry's dissolution of the monasteries and break with Rome. I got more of a sense of Jane Seymour's personality from this book, and Anne of Cleves as well. I thought the treatment of Katherine Howard was too conventional, with the same old story of the slutty adulterous. Weir claims that Katherine became sexually active at age 12 or 13. I would not call that being sexually active, I call it being molested or raped. She was a child, for heaven's sake, and whatever happened to her, it may have contributed to some of her later behaviors. I felt sorry for Katherine Parr, who survived Henry only to be made to suffer by her true love, Thomas Seymour. An overall fantastic book - highly recommended!

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, well-written account of the lives of these six amazing women
Alison Weir is a master at turning historical information into well-versed, readable material.I bought this book and could not put it down for two weeks. We all learn such skewed facts about Henry VIII through ill-informed resources.Weir's unbiased, often shockingly truthful account of this period really opened my eyes to what it must have been like to live in King Henry's court.I can't recommend this book enough!

4-0 out of 5 stars Impressive, though author doesn't give equal time to all wives.
This really is a decent, informative book on such a complex man and the women who shared his life. My only complaint is that the author focused too much on Ann Boleyn and not enough on the other wives. Still a good book, though! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Queen Elizabeth I (Historic Lives)
Elizabeth I (The British Library, Historic Lives Series) by Susan Doran is a really superb book! Though I have read many books about Queen Elizabeth this one, though concise, thoroughly captures the essence of the history of Elizabeth and her England.Susan Doran provides us a captivating glimpse into the complicated world facing Elizabeth both in her personal and majestic life as she confronts the dynamic political and religious world developing around her and the England she loves.Elizabeth I was a complex person ruling in a complicated world. In a very even handed way, Susan Doran presents how a dynamic Queen Elizabeth, at her best and worst, navigates as best she can, through the perils and complexities confronting her and England.Susan Doran gives us an Elizabeth who is real. She shows Elizabeth as a Queen who has human frailities, who is adept in propaganda, can be as cruel as she is rewarding, yet whose monarchy enthralls and inspires us to this day. Susan Doran's adept use ofa superb collection of illustrations throughout the book really provides a wonderful dimension to her protrayal of Elizabeth as a dynamic queen of England. This is a book I recommend to anyone who has an interest in Elizabeth I, Queen of England.

5-0 out of 5 stars An Excellent Overview
This slim volume is only 144 pages including index. Susan Doran has written a complete, if brief, biography of Elizabeth I that hits all the main points of her life and rule. Nothing important seems to have been left out, and the narrative seems unhurried. One could read this book in a fairly short time, and have an understanding of Elizabeth's reign. However, for those who would like a bit more elaboration, Doran includes a Further Reading List at the end.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An extrodinary year for Shakespeare
This is one of the best books I have read dealing with Shakespeare. Becuase it has such a specific focus, the year 1599, it is able to take an indepth look at some of Shakespeare's best work. The book focuses on some of Shakespeare's best plays: Julius Ceaser, As You Like It, and Hamlet, but unlike so many other Shakesperian analysis he does not look at this only from a literary standpoint Shapirio looks at it from a historical view. Shapirio chronicles the events in Shakespeare's life and in local and global politics that would effect what he was writting in a particular year. This specificity of this topic allows Shapirio to fully engage the reader in intresting and unique analysis of very well known plays. Though this book is detailed and very focused it is by no means dull. This book is engaging and witty throughout. I would strongly reccomend this to anyone intrested Shakespeare or the Elizabethan Era.

4-0 out of 5 stars A challenging book that is well worth the time and effort.
Recently I was given a copy of "A Year In The Life of William Shakespeare: 1599" as a gift. Although I am an avid reader of non-fiction I initially balked at reading this volume because literature is really not my cup of tea. I have always struggled to understand Shakespearean plays and as such I felt I would get very little out of this book. I expected the book to be dry and uninteresting. I was wrong. James Shapiro has done a splendid job of helping someone like myself to get a handle on who William Shakespeare was and more importantly what his plays are all about.
5-0 out of 5 stars notyour ordinary "year-in-the-life"
One man, one year - what a difference it makes (with a bit of prosaic license). I picked up this book with considerable skepticism - how interesting can one year be in anyone's life. The answer - if you organize biographies like plays (with a bit of space-time rearrangement), very. It may be redundant to call Shakespeare a genius, but an unfamiliar genius from the popular lore he becomes. Not a brilliant writer as much as a brilliant re-interpreter of seemingly ordinary plays. Not just an artist, but a shrewd businessman with the political instincts of a survivor in treacherous times. One who gets away with political commentary that may have lead (and did) less canny artists to the chopping block. In this day and age when artists carp about having to choose between art and popular appeal, Shakespeare hardly saw this as conflict. And a word about the author - American scholarship at its best - lucid, enlightening and unpretentious, with an economy of prose that strikes the right balance without seeming either terse or prolix. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Extremely well written!
For some months, I've been educating myself about Anglicanism. In so doing, I've discovered the hard way that Anglican histories are sometimes not the most readable or well written books around.English Reformations is a happy exception to that.
4-0 out of 5 stars Read alongside Dickens, English Reformation.
Haigh, Christopher. English Reformations: Religion, Politics, and Society under the Tudors.5-0 out of 5 stars the complete guide to english reformations
In this book Christopher Haigh puts the 16th century religious reformations in England into their true perspective. He sees the religious reformations not as 'The Reformation' nor the 'English Reformation' but as'English Reformations' and that they were part of an ongoing movement whichencompassed the 18th century religious reformations. Previoushistorians,e.g, Dickens and Elton believed that the Protestant reformationwas a swift affair and complete by the time of the Religious Settlement of1559. With the Reformation out of the way the natural next stage of studywas 'The causes of the Civil War'.Haigh challenges this perspective andargues that the protestant reformation was less than inevitable andgradually enforced through parliament and by a slow but important processof evangelisation. For him Protestantism was not established in Englanduntil the end of Elizabeth I's reign. His arguements are compelling andsensible and, certainly for British undergraduates, his has becomeessential reading for the student of 16th century England. If there is onebook on the reformation worth having then this is it. It is clear, wellordered and lays out the Parliamentary reforms as well as assessing thesuccess of Protestant preachers. His final conclusion is that by the end ofElizabeth's reign England was indeed a Protestant nation, but without beinga nation of Protestants. ... Read more

What can I say?I wasn't impressed by this so-called "textbook."It doesn't seem matter-of-fact enough to be an actual textbook, yet isn't interesting enough to be considered a decent historical work. There is surprisingly little detail about the events here depicted.4-0 out of 5 stars An Entertaining... The second in an informative and entertaining series on English history, this book is not a difficult read, even if it's required for class. An excellent overview of this time period for any student of English history- or the average reader. One of the few disappointments was the section in which Oliver Cromwell appeared.Absent was any mention of reasons why historians such as Maurice Ashley have labelled Cromwell as a "brave, bad man", or of the atrocities he instigated in Ireland. If your interest does not include the information on Cromwell, this is an excellent book, one I did not sell back after the semester was over! ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A good biography of the Virgin Queen by Tudor Scholar Erickson
Carolly Erickson has done her homework on the Tudors of England and in her 1984 biography of Queen Elizabeth (1533-1603)
4-0 out of 5 stars Nearly reads like a novel ...
I tend to read mostly fiction, but for some reason earlier this year I decided to foray into biographies. This book gives you a peek into Elizabethan life, gives you insight into Elizabeth I's personality, and you learn quite a lot of history, scandals, and rumours-of-the-day along the way.4-0 out of 5 stars First Elizabeth a reading pleasure
The major difference in "The First Elizabeth" by Carolly Erickson and "The Life of Elizabeth I" by Alison Weir is stylistic. Both women are thoroughly versed in the life of their royal subject, and obviously enthusiastic about her as well.Read more

Editorial Review

When we think of the wives of Henry VIII, we tend to think of women who literally lost their heads. But Antonia Fraser opens the door to the political and cultural demands that shaped the destinies of the king and his royal wives. Romance, unfortunately, rarely had anything to do with it. And if you think the modern American media is too tough on political leadership, you oughta READ about the royal court in King Henry's day! That's one family you'd never want to marry into. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A man of whims, to be sure
A good book to read to get an overview about what went on with Henry and all those wives. Those who enjoy history and detail will enjoy the perspective Fraser always provides. This one is not to be missed if you enjoy British history.

3-0 out of 5 stars Somewhat slow but still worth reading....
Antonia Fraser has certainly written more enjoyable works but nonetheless, The Wives of Henry VIII is worth taking the time to finish, especially if you're not very familiar with the subject matter beforehand. She does a fantastic job of laying down facts as with all her historical works but she also injects her own rather 'forgiving' viewpoint regarding the intentions and motivations of the people about whom she writes.Fraser has a wonderful way of exposing the core humanity of characters that most of us have been inclined to view as ruthless, inhuman monsters.I would suggest, however, that one read other not quite so tame opinions because the 'truth' usually lies somewhere in the middle of the extremes.

4-0 out of 5 stars thorough and thoroughly engaging
Antonia Frazer makes history alive and completely interesting. This book separates fact from fiction regarding the Wives of King Henry VIII.There are many pieces of information regarding Henry and his wives that historians disagree upon. Frazer discusses WHY she came to the conclusions she did and discusses the alternative viewpoints of other historians. This detail in particular really impressed me.(Of course, it was a little disappointing, however, to discover that Katherine Howard didn't actually cry out her love for Thomas Culpepper from the scaffold, though!)

4-0 out of 5 stars Gloucestershire and the English Civil War
This is a highly specialised work of academic history, so it isn't for everyone but the style is much fresher than the usual and the author, Andrew Warmington's obvious affection for the area means that it shouldappeal to anyone interested in the history, topography and popular cultureof Gloucestershire. Editorial Review

The royal family may have its problems these days, but as Alison Weir reminds us in this cohesive and impeccably researched book, the nobility of old England could be both loveless and ruthless. Weir, an expert in the period and author of a book on Henry's VIII wives, focuses on the children of Henry VIII who reigned successively after his death in 1547: Edward VI, Mary I ("Bloody Mary") and Elizabeth I. The three shared little--living in separate homes--except for a familial legacy of blood and terror. This is exciting history and fascinating reading about a family of mythic proportions. ... 3-0 out of 5 stars slightly disappointing
In her forward, Ms. Weir states that this novel would be the first to look into the personal lives of the heirs of Henry the Eight and their relationships to one another.....well if that was PERSONAL then the heirs of Henry the Eighth must have known each other only as competition to the throne rather than siblings in the vaguest sense. I was disappointed by the book. While it was factually accurate it failed to hold my attention or provide me with a passionate look inside the lives of the characters. I suggest picking it up on a bargain table or borrowing it from a friend.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another great job by Alison Weir!
I read about Henry's wives, and loved Weir's writing, so I bought this one.I really loved the way she set it up, beginning with young Edward inheriting the crown, and the whole backstory about his disdain for Catholicism, then Mary and her bloody period of putting "heretics" to death. The book was structured with Edward's short reign, Mary's reign and her marriage to Phillip, and it ends with Elizabeth ascending the throne. She is pretending to practice Catholicism to placate her half-sister.Her next book, the Life of Elizabeth I, will be my next purchase!Excellent read!

5-0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable Read for the Casual History Fan
This is history light, to be sure.A fusion of biography and history may be a more accurate description, but it is an engaging read. The writing is smooth and Weir keeps the story moving right along. She even manages to distinguish individuals sufficiently that it is easy to keep track of who played what role in each of the dramas, plots, and intrigues. That in itself is no small feat when discussing the history of England, given the tendency of English parents to name all of their sons Richard, Edward, or Henry.

2-0 out of 5 stars Jane Grey fan
I didn't read much of "Lady Jane Grey: Nine Days Queen", but that's due to the author. However, the book is skimpy and regulated to "this event happened" and "He/she did/said this and that".Alison Plowden is a good and factual writer, but this time she paints by the numbers. Also, in her excellent four-book biography of Elizabeth I, Plowden's attitude resembles Hester W. Chapman's; she tends to get a bit terse and condescending.I guess this is why I didn't finish "Lady Jane Grey: Nine Days Queen".I simply didn't want to encounter Plowden's attitude again while reading about my favorite Tudor princess.

1-0 out of 5 stars Disappointing reprint, no revisions, cover portrait?
I was honestly hoping that the issue with the cover portrait would have been resolved with the reprint. There is no new information that I had so hoped for from a writer as well-known as Alison Plowden. I am disappointed and would not recommend that anyone seeking facts about Lady Jane read this book. In an "information age", I had really hoped for facts, the book is so reflective of 1986. There are plenty stories about the Tudor period of our history but little factual compositions.

4-0 out of 5 stars Queen for a day, but not much more...
Jane Grey was queen for nine short days, during a period of great turmoil. The documentary evidence from this time is rather spare; even the coins minted during this brief reign are so rare as to be valued collectors' items.Author Alison Plowden uses documentary evidence and secondary sources to reconstruct the world around this brief reign.Indeed, Jane Grey remains a shadowy figure, even with this and other biographies available, given that, as a child, she was not party to much life at court, and did not have ongoing correspondence with many people likely to preserve such writing (only a handful of personal letters remain from her).Read more
