5-0 out of 5 stars A Must for collectors and amateurs
This is the most comprehensive and the most complete source of information published so far about this worldfamous manufacturer of top class watches. Close to 100 per cent of its contents are due to the former international sales director of the company, Emil Keller, who had worked side by side with Gerald and Valentin Piaget, the owners, as from 1957.

5-0 out of 5 stars Piaget and other fine watch collectors delight
This is an excellent book detailing the Piaget Company.Anyone whoappreciates fine craftmanship in watches would enjoy this volume.Thephotographs are wonderful and beautiful printing is throughout. As a watchcollector, I would hope that the other "top houses" ofwatchmaking would permit such a work to be published. If nothing else, itis one good ad piece for prospective Piaget customers. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A WWII B-24 Navagator's Riveting Story
Jackson Granholm has put together a wonderfully compelling narrative, telling about his transformation from a normal American boy enjoying his youth to a skilled Navigator of B-24 Liberator bombers with the 752nd Bomb Squadron, 458th Bomb Group (H), 96th Combat Wing, 2nd Air Division, 8th U. S. Air Force. He gives the reader an insightful look into his attitudes as the nation is being drawn toward the World War, then relates the rather haphazard process of being trained to become an efficient part of a bomber crew. The book is rich with anecdotal stories, leavened with occasional biting humor, making it both appealing and informative. His coverage of the dangers, horrors and vagaries of fighting a war from miles in the sky, flying in an airplane he clearly finds lacking in many ways despite it great capabilities, makes for riveting reading. His down-to-earth honesty as he describes a number of officers and men he serves with is particularly gripping, and sets the stage for the event which resulted in the book?s title, bombing Switzerland. As a newly promoted Captain, author Granholm is selected as Defense Attorney for the pilot and navigator of the lead ship in a squadron of B-24s which mistakenly bomb Zurich. His rich, sometimes funny, and extremely informative discussion of his work with two very unique characters, particularly his primary assistant Lieutenant Max Sokarl, reads like a mystery novel and is just as mysterious as to its outcome until the last instant. The Presiding Officer of the Court Martial is the famous actor, Colonel Jimmy Stewart, and his participation is the trial is most revealing of the man. This book is written for any reader with even the remotest interest in flying, WWII, mystery or human nature, and it is an absolute "must read" for those who enjoy wartime aviation history.

5-0 out of 5 stars Exception!
The reviewer of Jackson Granholm's book, "The Day We Bombed Switzerland," intimated that the author and the crews of the 458th Bomb Group were a bunch of "idiots."2-0 out of 5 stars Please change the tiltle!
...It is fair to say that the author has a good story to tell and gives a good description of USAF bomber crews during WWII. However he never saw a Lufwaffe fighter during all his raids and fails to give any credible explanation for this. Also there is not one thought for all the civilians that were killed during Allied bombings. Jackson's first missions were over France and although he does mention USAF bombing US army positions, there is nothing for instance on the bombing of Caen where 5000 French civilians were killed. Later during the bombings over Germany there is no mention on the death of hundreds of thousands of German civilians. ... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Lessons from ABB's experience and Percy Barnevik.
"Is ABB a model for other organizations?...Indeed, Percy Barnevik does have particular views on this question. In an interview in India, he said: 'More and more companies will see the need to develop this multidomestic combination for global coordination. The big American companies used to have a domestic and an international division. You cannot have an international division. In my company, the word does not exist because if you are foreign, you are foreign everywhere. The whole meaning of being domestic or foreign has lost its meaning. When I am sitting here in India, I am not an Indian citizen, but I represent an Indian company just like I represent a Spanish company when I am in Spain'...Is ABB a model for nations?...Warren Bennis says: 'The ability to align, create, and empower will characterize successful leaders well into tht twenty-first century. But there is another theme that surfaces provocatively in some of the interviews..., most notably in the remarks of Percy Barnevik of ABB. That is the emergence of federation as the structure uniquely suited to balancing the seemingly incompatible drives toward global cooperation and the putting down of deep local roots. This paradox is evident in world politics, where intense ethnic and national identities coexist with the widespread recognition that new economic and political alliances must be forged outside one's borders'...So, what are the lessons that other organizations and managers facing the challenges of globalization can learn from ABB's experience so far? We think that there are many lessons that are both explicit and implicit throughout this book. However, we asked Percy Barnevik for his views. He says: 'I do not believe that you can mechanically copy what another company has done. ABB itself has several variations on its organization and management depending on products and customers...However, there are some general principles to learn from and adapt to your own business: the need to be global-local, big-small, and decentralized-central control' "(from the Introduction).Read more

Editorial Review

At what price neutrality? For the 50 years following World War II, Switzerlandhas maintained that whatever collaboration it may have engaged in with Nazi Germanywas undertaken in hopes of avoiding invasion. Recently, however, foreign governmentsand the families of Holocaust victims have begun to take an interest in the fate of themany millions of dollars' worth of Jewish gold, works of art, and money that disappearedinto numbered Swiss bank accounts during the war, never to be seen again. 4-0 out of 5 stars The level of some peoples denial is amazing
This is a good book on this subject it covers many areas of the Swiss partnership with the Nazis. I would highly recomend this book to anybody that is realativly new to the subject matter.1-0 out of 5 stars Another Swiss-bashing book
This is another Swiss-bashing book (not the first one from Ziegler) to be edited. Like Hitler said "if you keep on lying about a subject, in the end people will believe you". The proof is to be found in other posts here that say the Swiss stole money from Holocaust vicitims. Well after four years of an independent investigation, it was found that less than 200 accounts worth no more than $12 million belonged to Holocaust victims. The Times of London correctly called previous claims that Swiss Banks had stolen billions from Jews, a "MYTH".

4-0 out of 5 stars Voltaire Exalted
Having been reminded of Voltaire from reading recent works on James Boswell and Benjamin Franklin, I found this very admirable book by Ian Davidson to be the remedy to my general ignorance about this great figure from the past. It is not the source to learn about Voltaire's early days or as the noted author of plays. However, from this book one can get a good feel for why Voltaire was, and remains, so important as the symbol of a thinking and witty man, living in an age often marked by severe religious, judicial, and political intolerance. He led a long, full life while often acting generously to improve the troubled lot of real humans. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful read for any thinking Christian or pope worshiper
Numbing, head-shaking...these are the feelings I come away with after reading this book. The life of the fallen Swedish hero Swingli has so much depth that a simple review couldn't do it justice. What the reader might come away with is a new understanding that God is so just and so defensive of his church of believers that he wouldn't even let a great warrior for the Gospel like Swingli, go unpunished after he started down the a very wrong (but understandable) path. The incredible sorrow of the dark medieval times due to the plague, the oppression of anyone lower than the royal or bishop class, and especially the violence of their wars, when the evil Roman Catholic Papacy armies slaughter Biblical Protestants (God chooses to let this happen because they've gone too political) pitted friend vs friend, relative vs relative, countrymen vs countrymen...a must read for anyone that thirsts for more knowledge of what has become to be known as Christianity and how God can allow belief in the Bible as the authority on Salvation flicker down to just a couple of people throughout the world in post Apostle Paul days...very sobering.Hundreds's of thousands of modern day Biblical Christians have much more in common with Swingli than they do with Luther, but probably have never even heard of this guy, this book shows why he was so instrumental.God Bless. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars The Work of a Structural Artist
To the layman, the name Robert Maillart probably means nothing. However, in the field of civil enigineering, the Swiss bridge designer is regarded as not only one of the most inovative and important structural artists ofthe twentieth century, but an engineer whose work was beautiful enough tobe displayed in the Museum of Modern Art. This book analyzes what Maillartis most known for: his bridges. David Billington, as he did briefly in hisother engineering guidebook, "The Tower and the Bridge,"convincingly argues the superiority of Maillart's reinforced concretebridges over the works of any other concrete bridge designer during thefirst half of the twentieth century due to the artist's careful balance ofefficiency, economy, and elegance in all his designs. By managing to conveythe significance of the great designer through clear illustrations of themany new forms and creative building techniques while at the same timecarefully avoiding too much technical jargon, this is a wonderful book forthose without much engineering background who wish to understand themethods and works of not just a civil engineer, but a great structuralartist. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating revelation on how medicine is developed.
(if this is the book by Robert Steele)This book was most enlightening. I am not a student of medicine or psychology but I have to say that I found this book most enlightening. I had no idea how psychology was founded as ascience(I'm sorry I really think it is a pseudoscience) and I did not know that it was based mostly on lies perpetrated toaggrandize a career or ego. Shame, shame. No wonder the Doctors who hold so tightly to their much paid for licenses and degrees getupset to discuss in detail their knowlegdge. The common layman knows better. That's what they are afraid of. Does anybody out there actually practice according to the Hippocratic oath.Steele does a great job presenting it the way it was. Ifyou like to know the absolute unbiased truth about academia and its supposed great minds - read this book. It will give you great insight. My bet, Ayn Rand had this book in mind when writing portions of Atlas Shrugged. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Of value as a reference for collectors, otherwise, skip it
It amazes me that a well-known maker as Omega has a paucity of books in print detailing the history and products of this renowned maker (at least in English).Other than a hard to get and doubtless expensive official history, this leaves the gentle reader with this book by Mr. Kreuzer.A translation from German, this book is an exception to the overall thoroughness inherent inthe German horological press. The history of Omega is very general and reads almost like a sales brochure from the company itself.Little effort is given to chronicling product development, especially in the era following WW 2, the most prolific period for the company and of most interest to collectors.Much better in this respect is the book "Tale of the Seamaster" by Messrs. Nakamura and Noda (Tokyo, World Photo Press).Unfortunately, this is in Japanese. On a positive note, the section in the back of the book detailing Omega movements is quite helpful, and I have often used it to identify watches.

4-0 out of 5 stars An Omega collector's must have book
If you are interested in more than how Omega watches look and need to know what's inside them, this book is a great resource. As a collector it's frustrating to see watches listed for sale with movement calibers listed, but not have a source of information that provides details on the movements. For Omega watches only, this book seems to be definitive in this area.I also enjoyed the descriptions of the major Omega lines and the other information on the company, although it's far from comprehensive.I would only recommend this book if you want or need the technical data on the Omega movements.

2-0 out of 5 stars For Really Serious Omega Collectors Only
With a far from comprehensive collection of color photographs of vintage Omega's, a smattering of vintage ad reproductions, and a barely comprehensible company history, this book's only saving grace is theillustrated history of Omega movements. Read more
