3-0 out of 5 stars promo literature
I anxiously awaited this book, and received one this holiday.I read it Christmas Day.It contains a brief overview of knife history, including flints to bronze to iron to steel, and more than one account of how many acres of trees it takes to make charcoal for fueling furnaces. Not exactly SAK information, but OK.And it contains more info about the founder, and his family, than I ever care to know.

5-0 out of 5 stars Classic Rallying Call to Gold!
This excellent book brings up to date similar content to that of Murray N. Rothbard's classic "What Has Government Done to Our Money & The Case for a 100% Gold Dollar". It is essential reading for anyone concerned about what must be done to return the world's financial system to one of Sound Money, i.e. return to the Gold Standard.
4-0 out of 5 stars Info That Needs to be Known
This is a great book.It has a lot of information which needs to be known by those who are interested in preserving their wealth and the reasons why.Central Banks know the truth, who also don't want you to know it, and you should!

4-0 out of 5 stars What can you expect from a former Banker?
I liked Gold Wars, it was a very accurate book on how the Financial Banking community makes a war on Gold, because gold reveals the truth about money, because gold is true money. The bias of the author, however, is evident in that he is a former banker, and it's going to naturally be difficult for him to expose all of the frauds of the banking system.Fractional reserve lending is not the only banking fraud, but also usury, which is charging interest. For a more biblical view on gold and silver, see my site, silverstockreport.com ... Editorial Review

What is it that makes a good biography so satisfying? An interesting subject, of course, but also one that is treated with both fairness and depth, placing that figure in the richness of his or her historical context. In this way we get all the pleasures of a good story along with the delight of learning. This is what Bernard Cottret accomplishes in his biography of John Calvin, now translated into English from the French. More historian than theologian, Cottret brings a useful objectivity to this study. In doing so the book reminds us of the fascination of subjects we might too easily consider merely academic. Immensely influential in his own time (and in our own, almost 500 years later), this biography gives us the story of Calvin's life in its historical context and a succinctanalysis of his theology. It appropriately detours in order to remind the reader of the context in which Calvin was growing up: brief explorations of the Renaissance and the Protestant Reformation, for example, remind us that these were not simply subjects in school in the early 1500's. As Cottret notes, Calvin turned 21 in 1530: what would it mean to be an immensely gifted and driven young man at such a time in Europe? It's a great question to ask, and in this book Cottret answers it with style and depth. 5-0 out of 5 stars An Outstanding Bio of An Incredible Saint!
Calvin has long been misunderstood and misrepresented! The author portrays the man as a mortal, and as a sincerely devoted Christian. His teachings are still as clear and wise as the day they were written.John Calvin was a genuine saint and this biography really does him justice.Thank goodness for biographers who care to objectively and accurately portray their subjects!

2-0 out of 5 stars 'Poor Calvin, a victim of his system.'
Cottret does give an abundance of interesting historical and biographical detail, his description of the early years of reform in France (e.g., the affair of the Placards, 1534) is wonderful, and his portrait of Geneva is fascinating (Parts I and II of the book). But when it comes to Calvin's theology (Part III), he does a shockingly poor job.2-0 out of 5 stars "Poor Calvin, a victim of his system" (?!)

4-0 out of 5 stars Knowing and enjoying your Rolex
If you are interested in the history and development of this much sought after watch, I feel that this is the best book on the market for under $125. Photos of an extaordinary amount of Rolex watches add to the abundant, easy to read, printed information. Maybe there are some new styles not listed but, so what, they will be in future editions. I think this book is invaluable to the Rolex collector, just starting out or with years of experience. A pleasure to read and to own. Please note that this is the 3rd. edition of this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Extortion and Slander of Switzerland
~Between the Alps & A Hard Place: Switzerland in World War II and Moral Blackmail Today~ is a energetic defense of the Swiss and their role as a non-belligerent neutral power in WWII. This thorough and well-documented book challenges the myth of Swiss collaboration with the Nazis and charges the Clinton Administration for obfuscation of historical fact and betraying the national interest. With the precision of a veteran intelligence analyst, the respected Angello Codevilla offers an accurate assessment of Switzerland's geostrategic situation with a chapter-by-chapter breakdown on economics, political, and military considerations for the tiny alpine nation before and during WWII. Codevilla's opening chapter `Pseudo-Event versus Reality' chronicles the smear and extortion campaign against the Swiss by U.S. politicians and activists like liquor magnate Edgar Bronfman. Codevilla elaborates how the Swiss were berated and demonised. He describes how the Swiss banks operating in New York became the target of a political game of state-sponsored legal plunder with the help of former Sen. D'Amato (R-NY), the Democratic Party machine in NYC and the Clinton Administration. They staged a media sideshow in the U.S. Senate and talked of economic sanctions with contrived evidence in an effort to fleece the Swiss. Their campaign of moral blackmail succeeded. Codevilla meticulously documents the $1.25 billion shakedown of Swiss banks operating in America. He records how the anti-Swiss campaign failed to produce any substantive evidence to substantiate its shocking claims. Moreover, he makes light of how U.S. foreign policy can be bought by powerful lobbying groups. "Compromising America's standing in the world by franchising foreign policy to interest groups has become all too commonplace," notes Codevilla. This expos makes light of the disgraceful selling of foreign policy for selfish political gain. As political payoffs and domestic prerogatives of private interests are being entertained, vital national interests are swept to the sidelines. Historical reality has been besmirched and the Swiss are erroneously and shamefully accused of supporting Nazi Germany and sharing culpability for the Holocaust. The settlement resulted in a mad scramble at the money trough for a cut of the $1.2 billion. The massive extortion ended up enriching Bronfman constituencies and lawyers far more than it did any remaining Holocaust survivors.

Editorial Review

When vacationing Genevan businessman Henri Dunant arrived at the resort community of Solferino, Italy, in June 1859, he certainly did not expect to find the remains of a bloody battle, concluded earlier in the day, between the Austrians and the French. The casualties, over 6,000 of them, horrified Dunant. More shocking were the survivors, left unattended on the bloody battlefield, many of them severely wounded and near death. Overcome by the brutality of the scene before him, Dunant organized and led a team of volunteers that systematically cared for the wounded. Within five years, he and four other prosperous Swiss citizens formed the International Committee for Relief to the Wounded and drafted the first Geneva Convention.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An International Nurse Reviews "Dunant's Dream"
I am named after my aunt, a Red Cross nurse who was an Army nurse in World War II.I am also a nurse (and also a Red Cross nursing volunteer, although I have never worked full time for the organization), and a former officer in the Navy Nurse Corps. My speciality is international health; my work has taken me to some of the poorest and least developed places in the world.I have seen first-hand the work of the Red Cross in war zones and after natural disasters.I currently work in a human rights organization. I recently visited the ICRC Headquarters in Geneva, along with its spectacular museum. 5-0 out of 5 stars Well Worth the Effort
This book is not for the faint of heart. It is a hefty seven hundred page epic. However, I found the book spellbinding and finished reading it in less than three weeks time.I would especially recommend DUNANT'S DREAM to those interested in human rights or history.Caroline Morehead is a gifted writer who balances objectivity with revealing glimpses at the men and women who have made the International Committee of the Red Cross the premier human rights and relief agency in the world.I came away from Morehead's book with a clearer understanding of the complex circumstances involving humanitarianism during times of conflict and turmoil.I am sorry that this very worthwhile book is now out of print. However, I am glad that is available in libraries and through "out of print" dealers. ...
