1-0 out of 5 stars Dave Kopel is an idiot.
It's unfortunate if people are dumb enough to be pursuaded by the type of crap that Dave Kopel writes.5 minutes of research exposes his cause, and yet years of research probably wouldn't determine how and why it is his cause. Nevertheless what he writes here is insulting to most Swiss and to most Jewish people.Any idiot who's seen a war movie with even a hint of military strategy would know why the Nazis didn't bother to steamroll the Swiss whenever they wanted. And any idiot who knows anything about WWII would know why the Nazis were less than hostile towards the Swiss. One figure which Dave neglects is that the Jewish population in Switzerland in 1933 was 18000, versus its comparably sized neighbors Austria which had 250000 and Hungary which had 445000. When it secretly holds your money, poses no threat, is aryan, is completely surrounded, has no strategic resources or ports, and can be taken at any time, why on Earth would you waste time taking it when your military is literally racing towards Moscow? That is, Swiss neutrality has nothing to do with farmers having muskets in their barns. And Sweden maintained neutrality for exactly the same reasons as Switzerland.

4-0 out of 5 stars A spirited defense of a nation and its traditions
At one point in his narrative, Stephen Halbrook quotes Philipp Etter, a Swiss federal counselor from the 1930s through the 50s. In 1937, Etter wrote, 'The armed defense of the country is a primary and substantial task of the state. The mental defense of the country falls primarily not on the state but on the person, the citizen. No government and no battalions are able to protect right and freedom where the citizen himself is not capable of stepping to the front door and seeing what is outside.' No one familiar with Halbrook's other works should be surprised that this seems to be one of the key lessons Halbrook wants us to learn from his history of Switzerland in World War II. 5-0 out of 5 stars David and Goliath
I am a history buff and have always been interested in World War II, especially in Europe. In TARGET SWITZERLAND,Stephen P. Halbrook gives a fascinating explanation of Switzerland's role in that epic conflict.Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Standing among giants
Reagan and Gorbachev are two of the most important men in the last half of the 20th century. Each of them, thru ways subtle and overt, led their nations to the point where the Cold War could end, and a new future could begin.Much has been written about what each did on their domestic fronts to move their governments and populations to this point, and much has also been written about how they worked together, sometimes in public and sometimes in private. This book focuses on the latter.
4-0 out of 5 stars I agree--its about the 'turn'
This book's strength is that the author was present for this historic timeframe and his ability to recount details and nuances of character of the Amercians and Russians involved in the negotiation process. The photos usd could be better. there should have been more of mrs gorbachev and mrs reagan.

4-0 out of 5 stars Comparatively fair - as in balanced.
My thoughts on this book match up pretty much with Oberdorfer's book on the end of the Cold War, which was originally titled "The Turn."They both offer a more open-minded approach.Matlock, in this book, has a bit more distance from the event, which allowed him more access to the Soviet side. And he was an insider's insider to what occurred.Oberdorfer's account is as the top-notch journalist he was. It's easier reading and thoroughly entertaining.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, thoughtful, and engaging
I just finished reading Claire Dunne's portrait of Carl Jung and wanted to share what a powerful and inspiring work this is. Ms. Dunne did a wonderful job of telling the story of Jung's evolving and awakening soul as he lived his life fully as a real individual with great gifts and real shortcomings. The book really reflects both the real earthiness of Jung "the peasant" and the highest and deepest explorations of Jung the genius and truthseeker. More than anything else, it seems to me, that you cannot be in the presence of Carl Jung (either in person or through the skillful help of this author) without feeling, as the poet Helena Henderson is quoted in the book, "Above all I remember someone who, by his every word and action, gave one the feeling that life is a good thing--something even more precious to me than anything he put on paper." (p. 109) The book has really blessed me, and it will be one I turn to again and again. I hope others enjoy it as much as I have.

5-0 out of 5 stars Powerful visuals and
This is the Jung book to have at hand, whether one is a 'Jungian', a seeker after individuation, or an artist. Ms. Dunn has brought us the humanity of Dr. Carl Jung, bringing us into his life and making his work accessible. It is richly illustrated.I highly recommend this book to everyone.

4-0 out of 5 stars A lovely life, beautifully pictured
This is a beautiful book.I expected that, but there isn't an index, so it is difficult for me to see at a glance what else I might learn from this book. The notes are extremely brief, mainly to give page numbers in MEMORIES, DREAMS, REFLECTIONS by C. G. Jung much more than any of his other works, or to give page numbers in the two volumes of his letters, plus THE FREUD/JUNG LETTERS, and the compilation published by The Analytical Psychology Club of San Francisco, Inc. in 1982, C. G. JUNG, EMMA JUNG, TONI WOLFF.In the contents at the beginning, we find that in Part 1, Wounded, there are two pages for "Toni," and in Part 2, Healer, pages 101-05 for "Helpers:Emma, Toni," and in Part 3, Of the Soul, pages 141-47 for "Answer to Job" and pages 169-172 for "Toni," who died suddenly in her sleep at the age of 65.The caption of the picture on page 170 states, "Although Jung tried to get Toni Wolff's scientific writings published after her death in 1953, as yet they remain unpublished."But sometimes things change faster than photo captions, and Jung managed to write an introduction "When Toni's STUDIES IN JUNGIAN PSYCHOLOGY was published."(p. 171).Jung destroyed "Toni's letters to him and his to her."Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars A notable memorial to individual and collective heroism
Meir Wagner's The Righteous Of Switzerland: Heroes Of The Holocaust focuses on one of the aspects of the Holocaust that is as heroic as the atrocities of the Third Reich were horrific. Non-jews of Switzerland who risked their opposition, hardship, danger, and even death because they refused to remain neutral in the face of Nazi crimes against humanity. Their combined and determined efforts were to result in the saving of thousands of Jewish lives from Nazi pogroms and death camps. While some of these courageous figures are known, most are relatively obscure and "unsung" -- but their lives and deeds must not be forgotten. In addition to their individual stories, Meir Wagner's The Righteous Of Switzerland is enhanced with the recorded speeches of Yitzhak Mayer; Andre von Moos; and Federal Councilor Joseph Deiss. A notable memorial to individual and collective heroism in service to humanity, The Righteous Of Switzerland is a welcome and ardently recommended addition to personal, academic, and community library Holocaust Studies reference collections and reading lists. ...
