5-0 out of 5 stars A great book
Don't be fooled by the brevity or put off by the high price of this book - it's worth its weight in gold.If you have a university level math degree and you want to do proofs again, this book is for you.I have been able to understand everything in the book as a result of Prof. Dunham's amazing ability to explain things.I did have to resort to the Internet on occasion to brush up on some trigonometry and calculus.I have been reading it slowly for 2 years now and I'm only half way through - sometimes I pull it out when I need some brain exercise. If you like math, you will like this book.

3-0 out of 5 stars Charming but historically inaccurate.
Once again, the Ivy League establishment has got it all wrong. They continue to perpetrate error in the historical record just as they do in the scientific record with that preposterous theory of evolution.
4-0 out of 5 stars Nice book for readers with a background in math
I really enjoyed reading this book that describes some background on Euler and his work. It is written in an informal style, so for people with a math background it reads like a novel.Read more

It would take a German to give credit where credit is due.
5-0 out of 5 stars Great World War 2 History
This is a great history of the 6th SS-Mountain Division.I enjoyed the play by play of Operation NORDWIND and the research that was put in to getting the facts of the battle right.Read Black Edelweiss: A Memoir of Combat and Conscience by a Soldier of the Waffen-SS first to get a really good look at what is was like fighting in Finland and in Operation NORDWIND.They compliment themselves very well.

5-0 out of 5 stars Great Book
I agree with the previous reviews, i.e. this book is a great combination of personal first hand accounts and tactical and strategic narrative supplemented by plenty of maps (unfortunately not many photos). It is sad that Mr. Zoepf passed away before he knew how much readers liked his book. ... Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars Where Is the Objectivity?
Over the years, I have read more than 100 books on extraterrestrial activity. This is the first book on the subject that made no attempt what so ever at being objective. As an author myself, I understand the standards of quality that most publishers demand.I am completely amazed that Korff was able to find a publisher. If you have read Korff's book and thought that it was convincing, try searching the web for an article entitled "Analysis of Korff's Spaceships of the Pleiades" written by Jeroen Jansen.Jansen performed a point by point analysis of Kroff's criticisms in a much more objective light than Korff ever used. Jansen also points out that mainstream UFO organization officers praised Korff's book.By doing that these officers proved that the brilliant article, "The Psychology of Dreamland" by Terry Hansen was right on the mark; the people who have volunteered to be officers of UFO organizations are debunkers who work for the government. To recap, the most interesting aspect of Kroff's book is that he was able to publish a book that was wholly unacceptable by modern journalistic standards.

1-0 out of 5 stars Enters the CIA
The agenda here is very simple.Kal worked as senior analyst for Star Wars in Livermore California and is out to prove that UFOs don't exist. He tried to do it with a debunking of Roswell, which is another litany of lies. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Worthwhile
There are approx 1150 works by Klee in various collections across America. This book accompanies the "Klee and America" exhibition on view at the Neue Gallerie, NY; The Phillips Collection, DC; The Merril Collection, Houston. The book offers an in-depth exploration of what attracted the various collectors to Klee, the circumstances during which Klee painted and how they affected him (WW2), and the influence of Klee on American art. Approx 100 works from the exhibit are illustrated in high quality, plus photos etc. For anyone interested in the world of Paul Klee this is a worthy book to add to your collection. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars The White Spider
I enjoyed the book and recommend it to all who enjoy the challenges of climbing. The historical account of climbing the north face of the Eiger is quite impressive. The author, having climbed this route, conveys a real sense of the terrain/conditions and the emotions associated with the seriousness of the situations. In the spirit of climbing a route, the author also includes a description of the route for aspiring ones at the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful, Magnificent Eiger
I love this book, and I love all of the writings of Mr. Harrer. The two Tibet books and this are must reading if you love Mountain books, and if you are interested in Tibet.Another fantastic book to read about the Eiger is The Climb Up To Hell, by Olsen.Mr. Harrer was on the team that made the first successful ascent of the North Face of the Eiger. It is an incredible event, truly one of the most fantastic in the history of mountaineering.I have to laugh sometimes when I see and hear about all the "extreme" sports and athletes, letting us all know how radical they are, using their thousands of dollars of equipment and guides to do these things.Just wait until we can get helicopters to fly higher in thin air, then we'll ALL be able to get to the summits of these mountains and have a beer and a bratwurst.Until then, do yourself a favor and read Mr. Harrer's books.

3-0 out of 5 stars Facing down the North Face of the Eiger
This book details Heinrich Harrer's participation in the first successful ascent of the North Face of the Eiger in the Alps. Harrer goes far beyond simply recounting the story of their 3-day ascent and describes the earlier unsuccessful and often fatal efforts that helped pave the way for their ultimate ascent and several of the subsequent successful and tragic ascents as well. Although written in a somewhat dispassionate manner that may be due to the translation from original German, this book is a very comprehensive description of the story behind the climbs of the Eiger. Worth reading. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Visually awsome
This book was designed extreamly well. The book consists of emails, faxes, photos, sketches, CAD, essays, and much more in a scrap book fasion. The whole thing is talking about this project for the Expo, but that isn't what is interesting about it.The design of the book allows you to page through and look at the pictures, read snippits of emails or faxes, and shows you their process of concept and design. If you were to ignore the fact that it is all talking about this one project you can use it to inspire new ideas for your own use. This is one hell of a book. The copy i go was a slightly different version but the inards are essentially the same.

5-0 out of 5 stars THEY LOOK MEDIEVAL BUT BETTER NOT MESS WITH THEM
Yes the Swiss Guard around the Pope seem rather medieval in their uniforms, but their history and their training is far from uninteresting. This short but fascinating book gives the highlights of their foundation, their history and their present place in the life of the most influential religious leader in the world.Well worth reading and well worth gaining respect for an elite group of young men.

2-0 out of 5 stars Could have been better
How I wish I could write a positive review of this book. Unfortuately, I cannot. This book starts out great and then becomes so bogged down with names, battles, and other details that it loses sight of its topic--the Papal Swiss Guard. There are no pictures, maps, timelines or other visual aids that would help the struggling reader, other than a small color spread of photos in the center of the book. I enjoy reading non-fiction books and I love studying the history of the Catholic Church, but this is the kind of book that causes people to hate reading history. Dry, boring with no sense of narrative. It was a struggle to get through it and I only did because I am very interested in the subject. The only section worth reading was the period about the Vatican during World War II. Maybe one of these days a writer will write a book about the Swiss Guard that is enjoyable as well as informative. This one "ain't it."

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent history of a colourful and very special bodyguard
This book is a small treasure for anyone who wants to have a glimpse into the long history of the Papal Swiss Guard. This bodyguard of mercenaries was created in 1506 and 19 years later suffered its greatest challenge, when it defended the Pope against the imperial troops of Charles V and lost 147 of its 189 members. The dreadfull sack of Rome was not enough though for the Papal Swiss Guard to eclipse from history and a few years later it was again on duty. Robert Royal presents this long journey through time in an eloquent way, embellishing it with many little known episodes and painting unforgettable portraits of the various commanders of that small but dedicated mercenary group (it has traditionally the status of a regiment despite its company size). Also useful, is the description of the present day Swiss Guard, the criteria for anyone wishing to become a member and the many changes that modern times have bring to its training, armament and duties. The book includes a section of 12 color photographs. Highly recommended to anyone interested in this colourful subject! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An encyclopedic, sociological study of a multicultural land
This work, first published more than a quarter-century ago and twice revised, most recently in 1996, succeeds because the national Swiss characteristics which it explores are essentially timeless and unchanging. While tracing the begrudging and belated enfranchisement of women and the gradual integration of Roman Catholic and Jewish minorities who once were isolated, the author conveys the underlying tensions beneath a remarkably successful experiment in coexistence. As one who lived and worked in Switzerland for more than eight years, and whose own memoir, Living Among The Swiss, was published in January 1999, I can attest that Mr. Steinberg's generalizations ring true to my own experience and observations, and that they are supported by a myriad of political and sociological details that one would normally expect to learn only from a highly educated native. The prose, though scholarly, is highly readable, and evidences deep thought and mature reflection.

5-0 out of 5 stars Must read if you spend over a week in Switzerland
This turned out to be an utterly fascinating book, and it explained quite a bit about Swiss behavior and culture. While I of course can't vouch for everything in the book, I've tested a lot of it by observation and questioning the natives, and it seems consistent with reality.4-0 out of 5 stars Excellent book for anyone who deals with the Swiss
I work in the US for a Swiss company. Switzerland is unique in Europe and it's hard to figure out why. This book does a very good job of explaining the origins and dynamics of modern Switzerland.I should add that this is not a travel book, rather an examination of Swiss politics, history and culture. For a another, more irreverent, condensed but also insightful book on the Swiss, read the "The Xenophobe's Guide to Switzerland" ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Good Stuff
This has some good stuff, but it is for a mixed audience, so none may be fully satisfied. For horologists, there is a fair amount of movements shown, with many of them "exploded" to show all of their parts. For historians, there is a lot of good old-time advertising and photos. For collectors, of course, you get to see a whole bunch of the product line back over a hundred years ago. The price list is minimal and ten years out of date, so it is not as relevant, but not completely useless either. Still, not a bad offering.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lamer
A Breitling chronologue is better reading than this.2-0 out of 5 stars Where's the passion?
For the uninitiated let me just say that my Breitling wristwatch is my most prized possesion. In other words us Breitling collectors are a bit nuts. You'd have to be to spend so much money for a watch when a fifteendollar quarts digital is all you need to tell time.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Expensive, but well worth having.
I've got this book checked out of the library right now, but somehow I know I'll soon spend the [money] for my own copy.Every page packs a wallop of ideas.Nightly, I open the tome randomly and read myself to sleep.Weingart has the courage to fill a series of pages with oversize underlined text, another with stark photographs of fields, then off to a visual essay on the power of strikethrough. This book knocks me out.

5-0 out of 5 stars The father of us all...
I have been waiting for this book for years. In 1998 I worked as an intern with the Maine Summer Institute in Graphic Design. It was the last year that Mr. Weingart taught there and I was more than honored to work for and learn from him. Near the end of his week he brought out a pre-production copy of his book (no cover, editing marks on some pages) and showed it to all of us. We were enthralled (I have been saving my pennies ever since). This weighty tome isn't your run-of-the-mill portfolio book, this is a journey into the mind of one who personally laid the foundation for nearly all of us in design today. Having this book is almost (but not quite) as good as meeting and learning from the man himself. Open any page and you'll find knowledge and inspiration either in his imagery or his entertaining writing. I now finally have my copy and it is well worth the cost. Humbling and inspiring and is a must for anyone who fancies themselves a typographer.

5-0 out of 5 stars Type and more
This is much more than another book about typography, it's the fulldisclosure of an artist who paints with the letter M and composes layoutsthat evoque the Syrian Desert. In this book Weingart opens his life, hiscreative path and his sources of inspiration. It's not a book of rules orabsolutes about typography, but about the experience of it, about itsexpression and its materials. 3-0 out of 5 stars Richard Noll in the Right Dosage
As might be expected this book, The Aryan Christ, has caused considerable controvery in the US and in Europe. The argument is convincingly presented that Carl Jung's scientific description of the psyche and pyschoanalysis are based more on volkish notions prevalent in the late 19th century, coupled with assumptions from the likes of Max Muller about the truth of a deep "sun religion" behind the plethora of world religions, and all ginned up with allusions to Wagner's Parsifal and the Knights of the Holy Grail.Noll does well to present a plausible explanation of how Jung's theories were generated in the context of Jung's rather voracious reading in a range of fields including, not just comparative religion as it was construed in his day, but also the altogether wacky "fields" such as Theosophy, alchemy, and astrology.
1-0 out of 5 stars the tune of those not in harmony
This book is an example of Richard Noll's self loathing. One writes a negative, critically dissective, slanderous account of another if and only if that individual has certain secrets or behavioral predilections that conjure an amount of resentment and regret in that individual's Self.Perhaps Noll's feminine half, his anima, or shall we say, his own aryan-poking-fun unconscious, meant to flash a slight knowing smile admitting such - while his self-righteous, or perhaps self-emulating, conscious half, and he is surely a half, not a whole, constructed this work of laughable fiction attempting to damage the personality of a man who understood more than Noll ever will.
5-0 out of 5 stars Jung's Public Shadow
As you can see from the diversity of viewpoints expressed both here and in reviews of Noll's "The Jung Cult", this is a highly controversial history of Jung's work with an emphasis on aspects that Noll claims have been suppressed. When I was debating whether or not to buy this book, I found one seemingly scholarly review that called it "bad history" and, just now wondering whether I should say what I am about to write, I did further searches and found several other, seemingly reasonable reviews which take Noll to task for bad scholarship. So, as one should always, I will try to remain open to the possibility that I have been misled. But the diary extracts, letters, and other source material from which Noll's conclusions are drawn are carefully footnoted and mostly gleaned from libraries where anyone could easily show deception if that were the case. So, for the moment, Noll has convinced me that there is a dark side (both in the Jungian and conventional sense) to Jung.

3-0 out of 5 stars Regrettably incomplete
This book is obviously long and detailed, but Ms. Bair loses the forest for the trees. She gives far too much detail about personal matters, family tree stuff, and the like. What I wanted was a lot more about Jung's mind and how it evolved.I wanted to read a lot more about how he arrived at his intellectual break with Freud, his development of specific concepts, like "collective unconscious," "archetypes," and such.Perhaps this book should have consisted of two volumes, in which Jung's psychology is more adequately described.
5-0 out of 5 stars THE Jung biography...
This is the most complete Jung biography on the market... I had read other Bair biographies and am always impressed with her rigor in providing sources and an objective account.

3-0 out of 5 stars A page-turner, but...
C.G. Jung spoke about his number one and number two personalites, one corresponding to his physical/outer life experiences and the other to his psychological/inner life experiences. Like some of the editorial reviews above, I found Bair's biography to be sorely lacking in coverage and understanding of this second and most important aspect of Jung's life and work. The following quote he used in Memories, Dreams, Reflections to describe someone else could just as easily be applied in this case:
