A concise, scholarly review of 17th Century Swedish cavalry
"The Army of Gustavus Adolphus (2): Cavalry" by Richard Brzezinski follows the same general format of the other Men-at-Arms volumes, by concisely discussing a military topic, in this case, the Swedish cavalry of Gustavus Adolphus in the early 1600s.One distinction between this book and others in the series is that the author presents some non-standard viewpoints and backs them up with references.This being the case, this book is more scholarly than many others in the Men-at-Arms series.
An accurate and objective viewpoint of the army of GA.
The army of Gustavus Adolphus is an objectively written book of Gustavus' cavalry.I mean objective because many of the long time myths of Adolphus are dispelled.What is said about him is merely factual data and has nothing to do with thestories typically associated with him.It fairly shows the quality of his native Swedish and Finnish regiments.The book discusses the causes of Gustavus' radical new cavalry types were as a result of a lack of money not a flair of genius.While many lovers of Gustavus Adolphus may be upset at the authors lack of respect for Adolphus' generalship the factual information cannot be denied. ... Kant's flip side
This book is supposed to be the funniest thing that Kant ever wrote, and I really wanted to swim through this book before I tried to figure out what I thought was so funny, but even treading water is a challenge when the current has such a fierce undertow, and the serious "First Part, Which is Dogmatic" demands some consideration, though it ends with the famous prudence which demands "that one make the pattern of one's projects appropriate to one's powers, and if one cannot reasonably attain the great, to restrict oneself to the mediocre."(p. 40).This collection of DREAMS OF A SPIRIT-SEER and other writings from the Swedenborg Foundation Publishers, edited by Gregory R. Johnson, which puts everything that directly related to KANT ON SWEDENBORG into this book, allows a serious consideration of Johnson's view that self-defense was the essence of Kant's approach.Religious controversies had career consequences in those days, and Kant had to show he was laughing "because Swedenborg was a controversial figure.Rumors of interest in Swedenborg would have seriously jeopardized Kant's prospects for academic advancement.This is sufficient motive for him to write a book exculpating himself of the suspicion that he took Swedenborg seriously."(p. xvi).Johnson was writing a doctoral dissertation on Kant the first time he read DREAMS OF A SPIRIT-SEER in 1994, and he cites it in the notes as his COMMENTARY, (Washington, D.C.:The Catholic University of America, 2001).The acknowledgments are dated January 2003 (p. xxvi) and I feel lucky that I received this book as soon as I did. Kant accepted that our spirit conjoins two worlds.
This work is often described as Kant's most "mysterious". The mystery lies in the fact that here in this treatise the Great Professor of Metaphysics unreservedly admits in the existance of "immaterial natures in the world", i.e. spirits and a spirit world. There is nothing mysterious about this statement, it is just that modern readers refuse to accept it. I've never understood why this should be so hard for some, since Kant's System of critical idealism is perfectly consistent with this view. Kant claimed that we could never know the true nature of the world around us, the true causes of sensations. He always held that there is a real world that we can never accurately know. This real world corresponds with a "spirit world", or if you prefer, a platonic world of Ideals lieing outside of our human perception of time and space. Kant unmistakably states that "We should ... regard the human soul as being conjoined in its present life with two worlds at the same time...." Nothing could be more unambiguous, especially considering his references to the writings of Swedenborg. Read more

Political science analysis at its very best.
This first rate study of the struggles of pre-WW 2 democratic parties in Europe casts an illuminating light on the problems of emerging democratic societies in the post=Soviet period. It is thoughtful and well written.

what a dog of a book
You may be an ABBA fan, and if so, don't bother with this book. Poorly written and a dull read. You can get most of the information presented anywhere on the web, and find it to be a better presentation. Occasionally she hits a high note with a few pieces of obsurity, but overall Ms. Vincentelli tries too hard and too often to high-brow her writing with toungue-in-cheek cliches that treat the reader with condescension. My advice - just browse the internet and find out what you want to know - there is nothing new here.

More an ABBA history that a critic's insights
A hard one this - a series devoted to classic LPs tackles a "greatest hits" compilation as it's subject. As a result the quandary is how to approach given one is dealing with a group which used the single not LP as its main platform; the tracks cover 1974 to 1982 and this complilation itself was not released until 1992 when the group was clearly long dead but about to undergo a major revival and reassessment, helped by their old Polar label being acquired by Phonogram.
A compelling look at ABBA's biggest selling album
ABBA GOLD by Elisabeth Vincentelli is a fascinating in-depth look at the phenomenally successful compilation CD ABBA GOLD, first released in 1992 and which to date has reportedly sold over 25 million copies worldwide. The author delves into the songs themselves, the original context of the songs and where they fit into the history of the group, the albums the songs originally appeared on, the creation of the ABBA GOLD CD and the ABBA revival that coincided with and was fed by its release. She also goes into great detail on why this compilation, rather than any of ABBA's eight studio albums, should qualify as a "classic" album. It's obvious from the text that Elisabeth is a fan of pop music in general and ABBA in particular - she declares `SOS' to be her favourite song, ever. But it's not all blind praise - if negative critical comment is warranted, it's made, but in a constructive manner. The author justifies her arguments in a persuasive manner that the reader may not necessarily agree with, but can find little to argue about.Read more
