5-0 out of 5 stars A book that keeps you thinking.
The title of this book is unfortunately an accurate description of Raoul Walllenberg's fate. Why wouldn't (or couldn't) the United States step in to save a man they later named an honorary citizen from the Russian prisons? Or for that matter, why did Sweden abandon a countryman of family stature the likes of a Rockefeller in the United States? This book is part biography, part mystery novel as to what may have happened to Raoul Wallenberg.Gersten explores in depth each possible angle beyond the well-known factors of his life, yet allows the reader to make up his own version of the truth behind his tragic disappearance. One can only wonder how many heroes there would be in the world if they were all treated this way.I did not know who Raoul Wallenberg was before I read this book, and now I will never forget him.

5-0 out of 5 stars A thoroughly documented autobiography
Researched and written by Ernst Benz, and translated into English by Nicholas Goodrick-Clarke, Emanuel Swedenborg: Visionary Savant In The Age Of Reason is a thoroughly documented autobiography of the scientist Emanual Swedenborg, a great and influential mind of the 18th century. Swedenborg underwent a profound spiritual transformation in 1744 and thereafter devoted himself to extensively documenting his visions of the world of the afterlife. A profound, amazing, and detailed account of a revolutionary scientific and spiritual thinker, Emanual Swedenborg: Visionary Savant In The Age Of Reason is critically important reading for all serious students of Swedenborg's life, work, philosophy, and metaphysical teachings. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Lessons from ABB's experience and Percy Barnevik.
"Is ABB a model for other organizations?...Indeed, Percy Barnevik does have particular views on this question. In an interview in India, he said: 'More and more companies will see the need to develop this multidomestic combination for global coordination. The big American companies used to have a domestic and an international division. You cannot have an international division. In my company, the word does not exist because if you are foreign, you are foreign everywhere. The whole meaning of being domestic or foreign has lost its meaning. When I am sitting here in India, I am not an Indian citizen, but I represent an Indian company just like I represent a Spanish company when I am in Spain'...Is ABB a model for nations?...Warren Bennis says: 'The ability to align, create, and empower will characterize successful leaders well into tht twenty-first century. But there is another theme that surfaces provocatively in some of the interviews..., most notably in the remarks of Percy Barnevik of ABB. That is the emergence of federation as the structure uniquely suited to balancing the seemingly incompatible drives toward global cooperation and the putting down of deep local roots. This paradox is evident in world politics, where intense ethnic and national identities coexist with the widespread recognition that new economic and political alliances must be forged outside one's borders'...So, what are the lessons that other organizations and managers facing the challenges of globalization can learn from ABB's experience so far? We think that there are many lessons that are both explicit and implicit throughout this book. However, we asked Percy Barnevik for his views. He says: 'I do not believe that you can mechanically copy what another company has done. ABB itself has several variations on its organization and management depending on products and customers...However, there are some general principles to learn from and adapt to your own business: the need to be global-local, big-small, and decentralized-central control' "(from the Introduction).Read more

1-0 out of 5 stars NOT a great book
In this small book Jack R. Evans attempts an "all-you-wanted-to-know-about-Sweden" book.Unfortunately, his book is very uneven, and it reads like a collection of high-school termpapers on Swedish topics, with little connecting thread. His historicalsection ends with the establishment of the present royal house in 1818, hissection on religion devotes more to the mythical Sankta Lucia than toeither Christianity or the old faith, and sprinkled here and there are afew pages on Swedish inventors, foods and recipes. There is nothing onSwedish politics after the early nineteenth century, and almost nothing onthe contributions of Swedish-Americans to our national culture. On top ofthat, the book is terribly edited, with typos throughout, from"Lews," Delaware, as the name of the first Swedish settlement inAmerica (it's "Lewes") on page 1 to two different misspellings ofthe name for Swedish hot spiced wine on page 149. In a time whenword-processors can handle almost anything, there is little excuse forEvans' almost total omission of Swedish diacritical marks. There are manyfar better books. For starters, try Sweden: A Political and CulturalHistory by Eric Elstob, and Swedish Mentality by Ake Daun (my wife says shecan see me in this one!). ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars DELIGHTFUL INSPIRATIONAL READING
I can't wait until the authors finish the next volume.St. Birgitta is a wonderful saint for parents of troubled young adults to study. She had eight kids: one was also a saint but several of the others had big problems. She had religious visions throughout her life which are well documented. The authors did a wonderful job of making the book readable and not just academic. ... Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars Nice for enthusiasts, not so hot for modelers
The book is okay.It should have been run by the editing department another time or two though as there are a lot of gramatical errors and typos and such.
4-0 out of 5 stars Aerofax produces a solidly detailed book on this versatile 4th Generation combat aircraft
In the world of aviation books, Midland Publishing can be considered a leading authority on a diverse range of civil and military aircraft. The majority of titles published under the Aerofax and Red Star banners deal with Russian/Soviet or British/US aircraft. Some of the best work in the field are the volumes by Russian/Soviet aviation expert Yefim Gordon, such as the recent titles on Soviet Secret Bomber Projects and the Su-24 FENCER. Midland also does an excellent job examining aircraft from other countries, such as this solid volume on Sweden's JAS-39 Gripen multi-role aircraft by Dutch author Gerard Keijsper.
2-0 out of 5 stars Huge disappointment
Ok, this is written from a modelers standpoint.

5-0 out of 5 stars A history of Sweden that is not like any other
Vilhelm Moberg (1898-1973) was one of Sweden's leading men of letters, chiefly remembered today for his peerless emigrant tetralogy. His Min Svenska Historia was his life's work, and only completed after his death. Published in Swedish in two volumes, this book is the English translation of the second book, taking the history of Sweden from Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson and the dissolution of the Kalmar Union through to Gustav Vasa.
3-0 out of 5 stars jaded but basically good history
The book is a generally solid history of Sweden which tries to focus more on the common man.Moberg is successful in this aspect and his book is very readable. However, he even states that he was disillusioned with heroes of the Swedish state when he learned of thier darker side later in his schooling. This disillusionment colors his his book throughout. It is akin to recent books on Washington and Jefferson that focus on slavery and discard the enormous good they did for their country.Istead of writing a balanced asessment of figures throughout Swedish history, he takes sides, commiting the same error, though in the opposite direction, as the nationalistic historians. I learned much on Swedish history from this book, but realized early on that it all must be taken with a grain of salt. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, poignant, beautifully written
I admit I am biased since I am reading this in an Email group called "18th Century Worlds", which perhaps give me more insight and perception into the world of Mary Wollstonecraft. But my Penguin edition of the book is very good, including as it does both Mary's "Short Residence" and the biography of her by her widowed husband William Godwin.Richard Holmes' introduction is a delight, situating the book in its context and also making the life of Mary accessible, and the relationships between Mary and the people of her day and age very interesting.

3-0 out of 5 stars Swedish Men-what???
On the whole I found the book a little dull, it paints the picture of average life, but is this really Sweden, perhaps it once was. A little bit outdated I think, but worth a read if only to try and understand your parents generation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Reccomended
This is a very well written book about the Swedes and also very true!

5-0 out of 5 stars Illuminating study of national character
Much of contemporary social science still looks down upon the study of national characteristics as hopelessly unscientific. What a pity. Author Ake Daun shows that such studies, intelligently handled, can provide awealth of reliable insights into other cultures. Covering everything fromchild-rearing to academia, he sheds considerable insight into Swedishculture and answers, in the process, some worthwhile questions. Why, forexample, is Swedish society, on the whole, so dull? Students interested inthe cultural components of creativity will do well to take note of theSwedish distaste for novelty, the predilection for order, peace, literalmindedness, and the surprising salience of envy. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Who knew?
This book is a revelation. It shows that the genius of Strindberg extends beyond the literary and makes itself evident in the visual as well. The paintings in this book are amazing; landscapes made over a hundred years ago that are heavily impastoed and luminous- the quality is almost sculptural- and border on pure abstraction. It's difficult to compare them to anyone else's work (though they do have a quality that recalls Turner in a darker mode). These are paintings that would thrill you if you walked into a contemporary gallery. The book also has a generous selection of Strindberg's photographs and photographic experiments. It's a must have for painters and lovers of modern art. ... Read more
