4-0 out of 5 stars shaken not stirred
Compulsory addition to the coffee table library. An excellent example of a clever, consistent, cutting edge branding campaign helping to position a generic product at the top of consumer mind. Absolut genius.

5-0 out of 5 stars Absolut Book: The Absolut Vodka Advertising Story
Absolut is one of the best selling vodkas in the world and the advertsing for it is second to none. In this fabulous book were are told the inside story behind the marketing and selling of this tasty treat. The paper is first grade and the pictures are outstanding to say the least. Absolut original with a bottle looking like a Roman ruin is probably my favorite one but there are so many nice advertising ideas that have become stupendous posters. Absolute Enivironment is also a nice one. This is a good coffee table book and a nice gift for the person that likes vodka and to read.

5-0 out of 5 stars Misunderstood!
Really, this book describes the IKEA way really good. But after reading others people reviews of this book I can understand how hard it is for non-swedes to grasp the real lessons learned in this book. It doesnt make it better that the guy that wrote this book is a quite "boring dude".2-0 out of 5 stars Nice Store, [bad] Story
Who doesn't like IKEA? Too bad this book isn't as good as the store is. What's wrong? Certainly not the subject of the book, but rather, the writing is repetitive, monotonous, circular, and repetitive...egad...it's contagious!2-0 out of 5 stars Progress by Experiment According to Family Principles
If you read many of my reviews, you already know that I seldom rate a book this low.I would normally not finish such a book, and not write a review. However, I felt that this book would attract a lot of readers who, likeme, wanted to learn more about the lessons of IKEA's success. What I foundinstead is one of the most poorly constructed case histories of aninteresting company that I can imagine.Read more

In this new millenium it's funny to think how things used to be only 20 years ago.A lot of the principles of this book would be second nature now but it definitely highlights how you can develop a struggling business by focussing on what the customer wants - gee radical thinking!!

5-0 out of 5 stars Unique work
This book contains a wealth of knowledge about medieval armour and the effects of weapons. The pictures are fantastic, skeletons buried in their armour, rarely does one get to see how armour was actually worn. The breakdowns and detail of actual armour construction is immaculate and enables any competant armourer to reproduce the examples shown. The detail from an archeologist's point of view was a little too in depth for my interest but if you are that way inclined then great. Only issue I have is the "analysis" of some of the wounds seen, Mr. Thordeman seems to imply that this battle was unusual in some way, that the combatants fought with unusual fury. He sites one incident of one combatant having both legs severed by a single blow as an indication of some great fury and intensity. I only disagree as there are very few examples of medieval battle wound pathology to compare the Wisby corpses. It seems that the author is looking at the battle from too detached a viewpoint, forgetting that killing was the purpose of the people who showed up to battle that day. This is a small detail but supposition as to the mental states of combatants, by someone who has no first hand experience of battle is unproductive. Otherwise a great book.

5-0 out of 5 stars A true masterpiece!
This book has a very special meaning to me since I'm from the town of Wisby(nowdays spelled Visby). Born and raised on the island Gotland and lived most of my life thete. I'v built several of these coats of armour and so far everyone I've tried on have been of satisfatcion. The book is so far the best resource book I've ever found. I have for a long time tried to find the first edition, but IF you can find it somewhere it's incredibly expensive. So jus imagine my joy when I saw there was a reissue! And very soon I'm going to be proud owner of this masterpiece...5-0 out of 5 stars A true masterpiece!

2-0 out of 5 stars I could not wait to get done.
I have always been very impressed with the life of Helen Keller. The difficulties she overcame in life were phenomenal. This book, however, was not interesting to me in the least. I am sad to hear about how she moved away from her traditional Christian background and followed the false teachings of Swedenborg. The book is more about Swedenborg than it is about Helen. It is a strong promotion of Swedenborg's New Church. She claims that he had a special ability from God to find the truth in scripture. The problem is, he like all other cult founders, only takes portions of scripture and uses them out of context. He claimed to have special revelations that no one else ever did. Beware of anyone who makes such claims. According to the book, Helen was pretty silent on her beliefs for the last thirty eight years of her life. I hope she was silent out of her realization that Swedenborg is not master of the truth, but Jesus is the truth instead. I do not recommend you use your time reading this book. It can be spent much more wisely.

5-0 out of 5 stars Touching Story, Stunning Ideas
This book was not only touching because of Helen Keller's fascinating story, but also an uplifting reassurance that life is worth living. Her ideas, those from and about Emanuel Swedenborg, strike me as poingantly true.Helen Keller's unique perspective on the world adds an amazing depth and reality to this work.I absolutly reccomend it for anyone and everyone.

5-0 out of 5 stars Title not correctly translated to English
The Swedish (original) edition is titled "Swedish wooden houses" which is quite an essential piece of information for a buyer. That's what's linking the humblest farmers hut with a grand manor in this book. The emphasis is on interiors and some are more than lightly deteriorating into a romantic peeling paint and wall-paper inferno, but mainly it's a fair selection of different types of rooms. Exteriors are also present and I think there is a good balance. Photograps are excellent as always when Ingalill Snitt provides them.

5-0 out of 5 stars This book will be a classic!
Sjoberg is the quintessential art historian and his book captures the history and soul of Swedish architecture beautifully.

4-0 out of 5 stars Fun book for Swedes
I am a Swedish citizen who has lived in the US for almost 20 years. I go home to Sweden regularly and feel that I am still Swedish. This book was most enjoyable to me as I recognized many "features" of the Swede. I laughed out loud many times. My husband, who is American, knows Swedish and has also lived in Sweden. He enjoyed the book too and we found ourselves reading parts of chapter out loud to each other. One of my supervisors has Swedish ancestry and I bought the book for him. He has a slightly different take on the book. He likes it but looks at it from a more serious and investigative perspective. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in how people in the world look at the world.

5-0 out of 5 stars Useful for Appreciating Swedes
This one is a keeper. I bought it after living in Sweden for a bit over 4 years. There were things about living in Sweden that I was having trouble appreciating; sometimes there was an underlying "cultural current" that wouldn't decode for me. After the first read, Robinowitz & Carr's book gave me some more pieces to the puzzle I was holding. Subsequent readings have added more pieces.
4-0 out of 5 stars Long live 'Logom'!
I picked this book up when I started dating a Swede and was pleasently surprised (both by the book and the girl!).Since Swedes generally speak very good english it's often easy to forget that they do have differnt traditions and culture. The book is a great introduction to some of those differences and leads to a lot of fun conversations.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Swedish Volunteer in the War Against Communism
Both Eric Wallin, and the editor, Thorolf Hillblad served as Swedish volunteers in the 11th Waffen-SS PanzerGrenadier Division "Nordland".This was a truly elite division made up of volunteers from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, and even a few Brits. This divsion was, in 1945, the single most effective unit in the defence of Berlin against Stalin's communist hordes.Wallin's description of the communist enemy is quite descriptive. These were, after all, the same enemy that we fought in Korea and Vietnam.I would have liked this book to be longer, covering his experiences as a volunter in Finland fighting the red invasion in 1939, and his earlier experiences in the Waffen-SS.However, this book is still an excellent addition to those interested in Hitler's preemtive war against Stalin, and communism. Those interested in the non-German volunteers that served in the WAffen-SS may want to read the following: "The Last Knight of Flanders" by Brandt, "European Volunteers" by Strassner,"Campaign in Russia" by Degrelle, "The Patriotic Traitors" by Littlejohn, "Charlemagne's Legionnaires" by Landwehr, "Latvian Legion" by Silgailis, and "Galicia Division" by Logusz.

1-0 out of 5 stars Unabashed Nazi Propaganda..... Pure and Simple
This exceedingly short memoir of a Swedish SS volunteer in the last days of the SS Nordland division in 1945 is short on real specifics yet long on multiple condemnations of the Bolshevik hordes. Wallin through Hillblad (the editor), gives little in detail on his unit or men he fought with. This contrasts with his unrepentant and relentless anti-Soviet propaganda which even reaches out to American flyers. Wallin conveniently forgets a couple of facts: (1) Nazi Germany was the aggressor nation in WWII., and (2) Wallin volunteered to fight for this criminal regime.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Superb Personal Account
This is a very good book. The combat descriptions are unbeatable, and the author provides a wealth of detail on conditions and circumstances during the last year of the war.As other reviews have noted, the author is not a particularly self aware fellow, meaning that he has some strange views about himself and his mission; but those views are an interesting historical fact in themselves.I recommend this book to any Russian Front buff. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderfully riveting Holocaust story. Life affirming!
This book is a tragic adventure. Anita Lobel recalls the arrival of the Nazis and the end of her childhood as she knew it. I was thankful this book was a fast read, the suspense of what would happen to Lobel and her brother was too much at times. The writing is beautiful and appropriate for young readers as well as adults. Beautiful photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Deadly Game of Hide-and-Seek
Imagine playing hide-and seek, but you are hiding from the German Nazis because you are illegal. Every time they get close to you, a new hiding spot must be found, or your life will be put on the line. During the Holocaust, young Hanusiu played by these rules everyday. Told from a child's point of view, No Pretty Pictures is the memoir of Anita Lobel, earlier called Hanusiu, and her journey through the secrets, tears, and sacrifices of the Holocaust. Ms. Lobel did an amazing job describing everything that happened to her in those fatal years. One part that held excruciating description was when Hanusiu was forced into her first Concentration Camp. I felt as though I was walking into the camp alongside Hanusiu. The other prisoners, barracks, nervousness, and overall feeling of pain were expressed in a way that I cannot believe was seen through a child's eyes. Another major event that took place was when Hanusiu was diagnosed with tuberculosis after she had been rescued. She was forced to stay in a sanatorium for about a year and a half to cure the chronic disease. I could feel her hope and insecurities as each day passed, knowing that she might never get out. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a clear picture of what happened during the Holocaust, supported with lots of description, and seen through a true survivor's eyes.

The Swedish palette of soft pastels conveys an aesthetic simplicity like no other. Even though I do not live in a stately mansion or a castle (beautifully photographed throughout the book) I became inspired to add the same colors and textures to my own decor. Stenciled borders, tromp l' oleil, marbling, and delicately painted wall canvases add harmony and warmth to your living space. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Swedish interiors through the centuries
The cover and the look-inside-glimpse do not do this book justice att all. It's not all that rural and folksy, but has wide range of interiors from palaces, mansions, farms and cottages. The in-put from Italy (and later France) was huge in the days when Sweden was a major European power in the 17th century. The book moves on into the Gustavian era of simple elegance and continues to regency and the summer-houses that became popular in the 19th century. A very well illustrated book with excellent photos.

5-0 out of 5 stars The Swedish Room
Beautiful book, well researched and written with carefully selected and beautiful photos. A must have for anyone interested in Gustavian interiors and the homes that contain them. The interiors selected for this book are the relatively simpler ones with soft color schemes and a cleaner, pared-down look- ones more acceptable to contemporary tastes -rather than the gilded neoclassical palaces of the same period. If you are interested in the more palatial interiors of the same period I recommend: Neoclassicism in the North, Swedish Furniture and Interiors 1770-1850 .I noticed in browsing through this book, that a number of the interiors selected for inclusion in The Swedish Room are actually the simplest rooms in otherwise grand palaces.5-0 out of 5 stars Comprehensive & useful
I have found this book a constant inspiration when considering the Swedish style in general and Gustavian in particular. Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars I love this book!
Aside from the fact a reader will gain new appreciation for the Larssons and their art, a reason to purchase this book is that it is gorgeous.Good paper, excellent color reproductions, a nice heft.If you admire Larssonand Scandinavian culture, this book is a "must have."

5-0 out of 5 stars This book makes me happy.
I ordered this book sight-unseen as a gift, and thought "well, I like Carl Larsson's paintings, I'll get one for myself while I'm at it."I'm so glad I did!I realize that, before reading this delicious book, I had never really "seen" a Carl Larsson painting before.I didn't know that all those happy Swedish ninteenth-century domestic watercolor scenes actually documented Larsson's home and family, and I had no idea that his wife Karin was the creator of the fabrics, co-creator of the furniture and equal partner in what is not only a beautiful and original home environment, but one that has influenced interior design to this day, a hundred year later.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Sweeping and provocative
Mark Blyth's Great Transformations may or may not be the true heir to Polanyi's Great Transformation, but it certainly comes close. Blyth provides a clear, incisive criticism of the way most political economists treat the role of ideas in the formation of economic policy. The two case studies -- the United States and Sweden -- provide plausible evidence that Blyth is correct about the multifaceted role economic ideas play in mobilizing political actors, transforming the way the economy is regulated, and even influencing market behavior. These strengths ensure the book's importance to an academic audience. Read more

3-0 out of 5 stars A great story that lost something in this telling..
The writing is clear and manages to convey many of the important details of Wallenberg's life, yet it was written for a typical young-adult audience. To a sopisticated reader this text can come across as a bit hollow and wooden. These amazing human beings and the incredible times they lived in appear somewhat simplified and one-dimensional in this book. It was lacking a bit too much in feeling and deeper exploration of human nature for this adult reader. Still Wallenberg's life is a great story and worthy of being told many times over. It's just that this one alone fails to do it complete justice.

5-0 out of 5 stars Should be on Everyones Must Read List
This book should be read by everyone. It is informative, well written, and provides information one one of the true heros in the history of mankind. If you read "Shindlers Ark" (or saw the movie) you'll really enjoy this book.

5-0 out of 5 stars History that is more exciting than the best-selling fiction
As a parent, I know how hard it is to find excellent, high-quality nonfiction books for older children who are at an in-between stage - not quite ready for adult books but too old for "juvenile" books. This true account of Raoul Wallenberg, a man who saved more than 100,000 Jewish men, women and children from extinction during the Holocaust, is gripping and well-written. My kids could NOT put it down and one of them is a reluctant reader, so that says a lot right there. Watching my reluctant reader with his eyes glued to the page compelled me to pick up the book myself and I was glad I did.The author has used actual archival materals and even interviewed Wallenberg's family and friends. There are also photographs included, a special touch that brings a sense of immediacy to the past. Perhaps most importantly, the author has not "talked down" to the older children who are most likely to read this book (although it could be read aloud to younger ones). Adults, too, would find this one fascinating to read. A strong recommendation for this one! ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Ga Paa!
Voltaire has left us an account of a great general that is never dry, always entertaining, and honest. While Voltaire gives Charles his due as a charismatic leader and great general, he seems to have written this book more as a vehicle to expose the King's dark side.Charles waged war for war's sake and is not glorified here as might be the tendency among other writers. Charles was among the most daring, colorful and skillful military leaders ever to take to the field. He was also a reckless, thoughtless, war monger who inherited one of the most powerful countries on earth at the time and in a few years, lost it.His selfish ambitions also cost the Swedish people dearly in lives.

5-0 out of 5 stars She has some good points
The suggestions in this book are not expensive. It is always good to get back to the basics. This book has sent me back out doors to enjoy my own little slice of nature. I don't think she is suggesting others to recreate her experiences but to consider your own. This book is a very good buy.

4-0 out of 5 stars Swedish Thoreau
Well I suppose the title on this one was a stretch but it is not too far from the truth.Ms. Catterson-Lindahl and family have found a place of refuge on a remote island off the coast of Sweden. As I had become interested in Swedish cooking I bought a book from Amazon on said topic and this book was linked with it.And so, being curious, I purchased this one also. And I was defintely glad I did.It clearly outshined the cookbook, and told the story of a family which embarked on a great adventure in a new land full of the promises that the USA used to offer.
5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent!!
I thought the book was entertaining, enlightening, comprehensive, and useful. It made me dream of my very own 'away from everything' cabin in the woods living with nature. The references were especially useful and I am already using some of the products mentioned in that section. A very good book for anyone who cares about health and keeping our planet as it should be. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Great guide, but always worth doing more research...
When planning my trip to Sweden, this was the first book I purchased. In the end, it also turned out to be the most useful of the four Sweden travel books I purchased, not including a detailed Swedish atlas.Gives GREAT detail about some of the lesser-travelled cities and things to do off the beaten path...moreso that the Frommer's book - although Frommer's is certainly worth having. The book is very useful and easy to understand, as well as being divided into sections geographically. The only downside as far as I'm concerned was the lack of photographs, BUT - once I got to Sweden - the real thing was better than anything a photo would have shown me anyway.

2-0 out of 5 stars Horrible if you intend to travel by car
This book assumes from the beginning that you'll be travelling by train.Unfortunately, it doesn't bother to mention that fact anywhere on the cover or in the intro. You obviously realize it when you start reading it, but in my case it was already too late.It is one of the bigger guides on Sweden available though, and if you'll be travelling by rail, and don't mind complete lack of pictures, this guide's for you.

4-0 out of 5 stars A good guide overall, but --
I just have to correct one piece of erroneous information. The guide states that you can't buy ordinary painkillers over the counter in Sweden and counsels readers to BYO aspirin. (!) Untrue. You may not find aspirin, panadol etc at the corner market, but you can buy them over the counter at a pharmacy (apotek) without a prescription.
