5-0 out of 5 stars Very complete and thorough.
This is another tremendous reference by McGraw-Hill. This is the perfect source for natives and completely bilingual second language Spanish speakers. The book contains quite an exhaustive list of idioms with a thorough explanation of the meaning and an example of usage. The book is easy to use, understand and is in alphabetical order. Chances are if you have doubts about the meaning of an expression you will find it in this Gran diccionario de frases hechas. This along with the El Diccionario del argot- El soez also by McGraw-Hill should polish off your knowledge and understanding of one of the most difficult aspects of langauge learning. This is a reference for those who definitely have a strong command of the language. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars How the struggle for civil rights in the US and against fascim in Spain were related...
An excellent book, which pays attention to an episode in history, that should not be forgotten. In simple words James Yates makes clear the relationship between his struggle for civil rights in the US and his later contribution to the International Brigades in Spain. Also his courage to go on with his activities after the Worldwar, as his pictures show, is impressive...

5-0 out of 5 stars Favorite Book
This book is one of the greatest books I bought at the time when I was in the US. Pete Seeger wrote about the book: This is a great story, a great read, and has a great lesson to teach young Americans , black and white, ofhow you can be strongly rooted in your home community and at the same timesee a sense of kindship with working people around this whole world. Thebattle to save the elected Loyalist government of Spain 50 years ago wasthe first battle in World War II. The Abraham Lincoln Brigade and othersmay have lost a battle but they didn't lose the war, nor have lost it yet.Carry on! I want to send all my respect to the members of the AbrahamLincoln Brigade, your international solidarity which you showed in thebattle against the fascist Franco regime will never be forgotten, we willnever forget you bright stars in the darkness. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A eyewitness account of Cortez'conquest of Mexico
This first hand account of Cortez's conquest of Mexico was written by Bernal Diaz', one of Cortez swordsmen. It is perhaps the most interesting and detailed first hand account of a historical event ever written. Diaz' writes about the battles, Cortez' manipulation of the various Indian tribes and his own men, and he provides intimate details on the personality of Montezuma. It is an exciting, powerful, informative, cover to cover, real-life, adventure.
5-0 out of 5 stars Thrilling, daunting
A very graphic, realistic and shuddering account of the discovery and conquest of Mexico by one who witnessed this major historical event from 1517 to 1521.
5-0 out of 5 stars CONQUEST: THE GOSSIP
I thought Hugh Thomas's CONQUEST, with its hundreds of sources, included everything there was to know (and his wry British wit makes the tragedy of Montezuma's cowardice read like a novel), but Diaz adds a whole new perspective. Thomas, for example, writes that a Castilian castaway who decided to stay with the Maya, Gonzalo Guerrero, was "ashamed" of his tattoos and pierced body parts. We find out from Diaz's account that this is a gross misinterpretation. Upon hearing of his rescue, Guerrero in fact tells his fellow rescuee, the famous Geronimo de Aguilar, "Are you nuts? I have a wife and three kids! Look at these beautiful children!" Aguilar suggests bringing his family along, but Guerrero's happy with his new life [and has a heroic-sized statue in Yucatan for his leadership against the Spanish - wife and children by his side]. How does the conversation end? Guerrero's Mayan wife does the logical thing and tells Aguilar in no uncertain terms to get the [expletive deleted] out of her house.

5-0 out of 5 stars Insight into the complexity of Spanish colonialism in the Americas
Although this is a masterly piece of scholastic writing by perhaps the pre-eminent historian of Spanish colonialism in the Americas, it is also a vivid read for the non-scholar (such as myself). If you believe that the Spanish relationship to the native people in their American colonies was a consistently brutal and usurious one, this book will give you an appreciation of how highly varied and sometimes very moral (in the morality of the day), it actually was, especially toward the end.

5-0 out of 5 stars Memorable, deep, and completely outstanding
This history book has several things going for it. First, it's eminently readable; the author is a skillful writer who keeps you thinking about the subject matter, not his own style. Second, the reader's interest is doubled by the author's constant interweaving of the development of Spanish character into the history. Thirdly, the author always attempts explanations of the deeper historical processes at work, keeping the (interesting anyway) history from devolving into just descriptions of events, kings, and battles.
3-0 out of 5 stars A Good Overview Of Spanish History
If one is looking for a brief overview of Spanish history, art, and literature then this book might just be what is desired. While it does not go into great depth, it does provide the reader with an overall basis of beginnings of the Spanish peoples, the civilizations that invaded the Iberian pennisula (Visigoths, Romans, Moors), and describes each of the monarchs.
4-0 out of 5 stars To a reader from Corona, CA United States
If you say that until this day NOBODY is sure of the origins of the Iberians, then how can you wholeheartedly dispute his claims. I think what he writes is just like every other history book, unless you were there you can't really know what is completely the truth. There are grains of truth and grains of personal opinion in every history book and historical opinion, including your post. Also, many books have been written that the Moors (and I don't say Arabs because the Moors were not Arabs) were in Spain for about 800 years. You can read how they were described by nearer contemporaries than us including Shakespeare's Othello. To dispute his claims is disputing many claims from many books. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Excellent history of the Sephardic Jews
Because most of the Jews in the USA today are Ashkenazim (descended from the Jews of Eastern Europe), I knew very little about the Sephardic Jews until I read this book many years ago.Since then, I have learned that the FIRST Jews to arrive in the Americas were Sephardic, many of them fleeing the Spanish Inquisition.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating!
This is a lively account of the Portuguese sea discoveries in the 15th and 16th century, arriving at new lands and meeting new people, the trade and other exchanges that followed, all presented in a most interesting manner. Movement, colour, adventure make this book engaging reading. I also have Hermano Saraiva' s "Portugal a Companion History", another excellent book. I think they go very well together, one for the overseas history the other for Portugal itself. These are two books that bring history to life.

5-0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and informative reading
This book on the Portuguese history overseas is not a boring record of past events but a lively account of the intense movement of the Portuguese in the so-called Age of Discoveries, from Madeira to Brazil, to Japan and to Korea. It is a fascinating and well-documented record of the constant flow of people and commodities between Portugal and Africa, Asia and America. The superb illustrations help bring to life this constant flux and reflux. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and am very happy to recommend it to anyone interested in Portugal and its people,of today and yesterday.

4-0 out of 5 stars Another Great Introduction
In terms of scope of work, Russell-Wood's Portuguese Empire -World on the Move is a welcome addition to the "holistic" study of Portuguese overseas enterprise. To be sure, Portuguese scholarship has "caught up" with developments in Western historiography in the last two decades or so; there is also no shortage of area studies. Yet coverage remains uneven and this is especially so where English works on the subject is concernedRead more

5-0 out of 5 stars Neither vague nor an "account"
This is NOT, like other reviewer says, an account of Revolutionary Argentina in the 19th century (the period of civil war that followed the independence from Spain). This is not a book of history. Sarmiento is much more than a mere witness/narrator of a period. He is a man of letters, a writer -and one of the very best from Argentina- it takes you only the reading of the first sentence "Oh, Shadow of Facundo..." to realize that you are in the dark territory of myth, not of the clean, sunny history classroom.
2-0 out of 5 stars Vague Account of Revoultionary Argentina
There are very few primary sources one can find when studying Latin American revloutions, with Argentina being the subject here. This being a primary source, isn't one that should be taken for an overall look on the Argentina Revoultion. Sarmiento has a sort of bias that shouldn't be taken too seriously. It is hard to get really a good account of Juan Facundo Quiroga because he is such a vague figure in Argentinian history. This is probably the only elaborate interpretation of the figure. Sarmiento also has a sort of habit to go off on tangents on things that are totally irrelevant to the subject matter at hand.
4-0 out of 5 stars one classic argentines book
