4-0 out of 5 stars Great overall resource
I found this book extremely helpful, if a bit bulky. One shortcoming is that the book does not include prices for the accommodation it recommends.Prices are always helpful if you're traveling on a budget; even though they become outdated quickly, they at least give you an idea.
5-0 out of 5 stars A must-have for the Andalucian-bound!!!
Keeping in the tradition of the insight, clarity, and usefulness which has made Rough Guide among the best of guide book series, the Rough Guide to Andalucia is the definitive book for any tourist interested in visitng that region.5-0 out of 5 stars Must Have Guide
Fantastic resource for the Andalucian paradise! We travelled to Spain with other guides, purchased this one on Gibralter and weren't without it the rest of the visit! We also travelled with a 6 month old, great recommendations for sites and out of the way not- touristy spots.Roman ruins listed in here are incredible and would have been missed if using any other guide. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars Review by a Barcelona native
I am glad Robert Hughes wrote this book. We, Barcelonites tend to take our city for granted and have lost the ability to take in its historical depth.
4-0 out of 5 stars Beautiful city, scholarly book
I visited Barcelona in 1982 and then again, 20 years later, in 2002. I am certainly glad I read Robert Hughes' "Barcelona" before going the second time since it certainly gave me a new perspective on the city, its history, its art, and its architecture.
3-0 out of 5 stars Brilliant or boring
When on his game Hughes' writing is insightful, witty, observant, educational. Here that would be the first 100 pages and the last 120, of the 574 pages which reveal that the Catlans are not Spanish, but Catalan; their art, architecture and politics come from their history of being with or against the rest of Spain, having their own language and culture, with economic/political battles against Madrid from early Roman history to today (Beckham was going to Barcelona F.C. before Real Madrid stole him away at the last second).I imagine he started with the idea of writing a book about the fantastic Art Nouveau architecture in one of the most architecturally interesting cities in the world, to discover that the Catalan spirit was such a force in shaping the uniqueness of the style that more needed to understood about who these people with their own language and culture that is sometimes banned by the national government.Unfortunately the author goes too deep in cataloging the complexities of the history of Barcelona, some of which is just not that interesting, the large middle of the book saps the reader's strength. The text comes alive again for the ending sections on the late 1800s when Barcelona was the bomb throwing anarchy capital of the world leading into the development of the Art Nouveau/Modernista movement, although slowing a bit before finishing with a really excellent examination and comment of Gaudi, the person and his work.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent overview of Spanish culture, art and history
I used Cantarino's "Civilizacin y cultura de Espaa" for some of my classes in Burgos, Spain, and found it to be an excellent supplement to the material that we were studying in class (from prehistory and Atapuerca to post-Franco democratic Spain). Each chapter covers a specific period in Spanish history, along with notes on art, architecture, music, literature for each time period. I found the level of Spanish to be very easy, although it might prove a bit challenging to second or third year Spanish students. The look of the book is a bit outdated (colour photos would have been nice for the art photos!), and the "history" ends at 1996 or so. Overall, a worthy investment, complete with maps, a timeline, a glossary, and plenty of useful, compact information about the most important events and people in Spain throughout the ages.

2-0 out of 5 stars Convoluted and confusing
I bought this book because it was required reading for a class. The text is written in such a way as to be unclear and and very unweildy for third year Spanish students. The vocabulary was very advanced and I found it more helpful to read about the history of Spain on the internet or in the encyclopedia for an overview before thinking about attempting this book. This is not a book that I would strongly recommend to an intermediate student.

1-0 out of 5 stars confusing
I have been reading this book and think the format is awful. He skips around time periods and has details of one thing and then nothing on another. There is no visual aid for where the people came from and occupiedSpain. There also is no outline or good intro for the book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Prescott revisited
Any potentional historian of Spain must contend with the work of William Prescott.Though cutting edge historians of Spain dismiss Prescott as old fashioned (he wrote over 150 years ago), his work can still be read with pleasure and little awe (particulalry when one remembers that Prescott was blind when he was active as a historian.4-0 out of 5 stars Surpisingly Easy to Read!
Nancy Rubin's work on Isabel la Catlica was very refreshing and difficult to put down. As a Spanish Literature student at UCLA, I recommend this book to anyone interested in the brightening their knowledge of this great woman. The chronology was consistant and the surrounding facts of the Catholic Queen were just the right size. It emphasized the rennovations that the queen implemented on the broken kingdom and the tenacity of her character, all fueled by her faith.

5-0 out of 5 stars "I, Isabella.."
Maybe should be called, "I, Isabella".One could think Isabella's reign was decidedly a mixed blessing, but still appreciate the drama of this book.Rubin takes us step by step through the bewildering maze of Spanish politics; she suggests answers to a lot of nagging questions (we see what a long shot it was against Columbus getting his funding); she conveys, ultimately, a sense of the loss and tragedy that followed on power. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars No, the Third Voyage is the best!
This book contains primary sources ONLY. (How do I "rate" the letters of Christopher Columbus? :-) You can read about the life and times of an historical character by the very best historians for years, but until you read what that character actually wrote about his own experiences, you're groping in the dark. Nothing compares to getting it from the horse's mouth.
5-0 out of 5 stars great description of Columbus voyages
This book is a great description of the events related to the exploration of the new world made by Columbus. The first two voyages are the most interesting because of the discovery of the caribbean island and the natives inhabitants living there, the arawaks and the caribs. The latter were very particular

5-0 out of 5 stars Columbus - More Than 1492
This is a terrific history of Columbus' four trips to the Americas taken mostly from his journals and other contemporary accounts. It is better than good for several reasons.4-0 out of 5 stars Columbus..A Place to Begin
As an introduction to the voyages of Columbus, this book by William Least Heat-Moon serves the task well.In its brief 180 pages, an overview of where and when Columbus travelled is well chronicled. 4-0 out of 5 stars A good read...
I received this book "Columbus in the Americas" as a present and enjoyed it very much.I previously read Heat-Moon's Blue Highways as well as River-Horse and this is a quite a departure from those books.Frankly I enjoyed Blue Highways and River-Horse more because Heat-Moon has such a great way of telling stories of his experiences. With Columbus he had to rely upon historical fact and obviously could not put in the first-person details that makes the other books so wonderful.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Why is this book out of print?
This is one of the best publications on the Aztecs, a major historical source that is accessible and fascinating. University of California Press made a mistake by including color illustrations and giving this a high price. It was always pricey for assignment for college classes, and now its out of print. It would have been better to give up the color illustrations and lower the price. But in any case this book it is worth looking at for anyone interested in the Aztecs, Mesoamerica, or native American cultures.

Editorial Review

During the turbulent 1960s, Chicanas who funneled blood, sweat, and tearsinto Mexican American protest movements such as La Raza were often relegated tosupporting the men who leapt to the ramparts. Stung by such sexual discrimination anddisheartened by--or disinterested in--the largely middle-class Anglo agenda championedby the women's liberation movement, Chicana feminists fought to carve out a niche.Though dry at times, the outspoken essays and writings collected in Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars An Incisive Assessment of an Important but Forgotten Historical Episode
Gerald Brenan's THE SPANISH LABYRINTH is a masterful account of the mosaic of the history and immediate events leading to the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939).Brenan effectively deals with the complexities of Spanish political history from the end of the Napoleonic Wars (c. 1799-1815)to the start of the Spanish Civil War.Brenan is clear that the Spanish Civil War was the culmination of events of the early 19th century to 1936.In other words, he does not provide a "quick fix" to superficially explain these events.Another asset of this book is the fact that Brenan carefully examines the Spanish Civil War based on a precise review of Spanish Civil War.Brenan dismisses the notion that too many lazy historians use in describing the Spanish Civil War as one between righteous "Democracy" and wicked "Fascism."
3-0 out of 5 stars A good history of 19th century Spain and up to 1936
Only for those with an interest and some background in Spanish history and politics. Sets the stage for the Spanish Civil War (1936-39). Well written and readable; the English author uses research as well as first-hand experience to paint the complex mosaic of Spanish political factions. In the last line of the epilogue he condemns the English policy of appeasement toward Hitler of allowing the Spanish Civil War to take place by not imposing an arms embargo against Germany. The Spanish fascists were allowed to import German arms and thus, eventually, maintain superior firepower over the Republicans.Read more

Editorial Review

Spain, influential historians once maintained, was an "exceptional" country--meaning that, in many key respects, it lay outside the course of European history. Unlike any other nation of Western Europe, Spain was for centuries the province of Islamic rulers, and the crowned heads of other parts of the continent scorned it as an "oriental," necessarily backward nation--when in many ways it was considerably more advanced than its neighbors.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Epitome of a Scholarly, European History Boook
Words that define this book:accurate, engaging, reliable, fascinating, scholarly, solid...Even the Spaniards awarded this exacting Englishman with the famed "Prince of Asturias Award" and an honorable doctorate from the University of Madrid.
3-0 out of 5 stars Questionable credibility??
Raymond Carr, editor of Spain- A History, is the former Warden of St. Anthony's College, Oxford. His earlier works include Modern Spain, 1875-1980, Spain 1808-1939, and Spain 1808-1975. In compiling works for Spain- A History Carr gathered several authors around the history of Spain.
4-0 out of 5 stars A coherent, interesting introduction to a broad subject
First, you must realize that a 300-page book that covers 2500 years of history can only accomplish the briefest of surveys. This book does a solid job with this task. The text is sensibly divided into nine chapters, each covering a distinct historical period.Raymond Carr is the editor and author of one chapter.Considering that each chapter has a different author, the book has a remarkably unified feel.Carr has done a good job making sure each chapter supports the others and avoiding redundancy. There is good balance as well; most chapters touch on social, demographic, economic, and cultural trends as well as the obligatory political narrative. This gives the reader nice insights into the character of each period and helps to understand the course of events.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars True moorish history for the first time
I am very glad Mr. Stanley Lane Poole wasn't as prejudiced as the eurocentric scholars and students today. If he had been he wouldn't have been able to peice together such an exquisite peice of work on the facts of history. It seems eurocentricists and those miseducated by eurocentricism, are absolutely obsessed with trying to prove that other nations, races and peoples are "less" than them and will go to no ends to convince themselves that their illusion is true. Its really pitiful. I understand though because for a eurocentricist to admit the moors were black africans whom raised and taught the people of Spain ,whom were savage barbarians at the time, would be giving the africans..a little too much credit.
5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic Monumental Work.Historically SignificantFor the Ages.
A debt of gratitude is certainly in order to the eminent historian Stanley Lane Poole for his voluminous literary contribution to Moorish/Islamic culture and history. Lane Poole was a pioneer whose works in his field not only carried the standard of the era, but were nonpariel in his day.
5-0 out of 5 stars Do some research please. (ooops, I meant only to give it 1 star)
Ok, Im Portuguese and I have done a lot of research on the Moors and the Berbers (Moroccans). Now, they "are" from North Africa, but that doesnt make them black.Actually, if you look at the Andalusian drawings and paintings (done by the Moors), they look alot like Middle-easterners (Olive skin, dark hair, so on).The word "Moor" means "dark", not black.I have olive skin, dark hair, and my friends in the Military always called me an A-rab (jokingly of course). Its pretty obvious i have some DNA left over from the Berbers. But my wife is of Irish, Scottish, English descent.Next to her i look dark (Moor).Im not prejudice, and I dont want to steal your thunder. But I would have to ask you to do some homework before you draw lines in the sand and become just like the ones you seem to despise. ps...some of these painting (drawings) do have blacks in them. Its usually one or two people out of the group (of say 20). Here are the pictures I refer to: [...] ... Read more
