5-0 out of 5 stars The Easy Way
In order to familiarize yourself with the thoughts and strategies of any critic or philosopher without being exposed to the sufferings sustained in the painful job of reading extremely complex texts, you should always focus on the interviews made with the critic or the philosopher. You will get a much better grasp of highly complicated ideas suggested by philosophers such as Sartre, Foucault, and Said by reading through their published interviews. I mention those three authors for it has been claimed by some reviewers that they have turned the activity of giving an interview into an artform. Daly's interviews with Zizek does not spare us from Zizek's playful, and at times elusive, style when he goes down on Kinder chocolate, virtual reality, globalization, Hitchcock, Fight Club, etc... Zizek is as quick and as versatile as you may have imagined him to be from his previous books or lectures. Daly seems to know to press the right buttons in order to get Zizek off the ground. The chemistry in this book makes even Deleuze sound as a wild and attractive philosopher. However, you should beware Zizek's Lacan is quite different from the clinical readings of Lacan. It became quite clear already in 1989 in "the Sublime Object of Ideology" that Zizek preferred to focus on the underestimated Real in the Lacanian cognitive edifice. Daly explains in a very lucid way the importance of the Real to Zizek's Lacan, and he helps the reader to enter Zizek's streams of thought. This book helps any reader to understand Zizek's highly complex ideas in a very simple way. I would place this book among the other books of interviews made with the authors mentioned above, Sartre, Foucault, and Said. Daly and Zizek are preserving the artform.

5-0 out of 5 stars Most coherent text on Lacan and/or Zizek ever
Previous to reading this book I had read quite a few of Zizek's books, as well as some other secondary material on Lacan, and always seemed to miss the mark on some key conceptual understandings. They were always too technical, above my head, or hard to understand. In this book, by contrast, and probably in part because it's in an interview format, Zizek does an incredible job of succinctly explaining difficult Lacanian concepts in easy to understand terms. He also outlines his vision of politics and ethics, although if you want to see him defending his politics at his best, I reccomend Revolution at the Gates. The first part of the book also has the added bonus of giving alot of biographical information about Zizek, which, quite frankly, I couldn't care less about, but theory-heads might enjoy the story of his life.Daly also does a pretty good job explaining Zizek's interpretation of Lacan in the introduction - at least far better than most secondary material on Zizek.A great read if you want to get to understand Zizek and Lacan better but have had difficulty understanding his other books.

5-0 out of 5 stars a great introduction
Anyone interested in learning about Zizek should read this book. It is lively and accessible, a perfect way to get acquainted with a daunting thinker who writes faster than most of us read. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars The Best Book I've Ever Read
This book was, by far, the most moving, challenging, and faith inspiring books I've ever read. It is a must read for every Christian!

5-0 out of 5 stars Reading This Book Will Move You To Tears
Of Whom The World Was Not Worthy, by Marie Chapian, is one of the most moving books I have read during my Christian walk.It truly lives up to it's name, because the family described in this book, primarily Jacob Kovac and his wife, Jozeca, were truly of whom the world was not worthy. The faith that they held on to, while enduring one of the most horrific times our world has ever seen, is truly awe inspiring. I'm still amazed at how Jozeca managed to have three children under the circumstances she lived in.Especially the second child which she gave birth to during the war.She was on the battlefield away from her husband and family and stayed there supporting the resistance effort until she went into labor.Jozeca was a woman of prayer, and the LORD Jesus heard and answered her prayers. This book is truly a reminder that our God is an awesome God and "For with God nothing shall be impossible."(Luke 1:37).This book was wonderful to read and if you are going through any faith trials right now, just read this book and it will help you get a new perspective on your situation.

5-0 out of 5 stars Of Whom The World Was Not Wothy
This is the best book I have ever read. It has really restored my faith and changed my life. I met the son Yanni and he is truly a faithful man. I did not know anyone with such a string faith. The story really makes you appreciate what we have. ... Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars Big Brainy Egos Equal Bad Books
Although this book has great descriptions of the NSK's history and Laibach's music, they're wrapped in the worst sort of pseudo-intellectual merde, if merde is the word I want. The most flagrant problem is Monroe's (ab)use of parentheses in order to say two things at once, e.g. "Laibach's (ab)use of totalitarian imagery..." It's indicative of a larger problem, which is that Monroe thinks he's clever, and he uses every available critical theorist's banality to show you. He pissed me off in the preface by deigning that I might "read the chapters, or even the sections, in any order [I] want." Well, thank you for giving me your permission, faggot, since that's what I was going to do, anyway.

5-0 out of 5 stars A great look at the Yugoslav conflict.
Personally, I think that Misha Glenny is one of the best writers on the Balkans.I have spent three years living in the Balkans so I know something about the area.I highly recommend reading his work The Balkans first as it gives great insight into the region. However, if you are only interested in the war than this work can certainly stand alone. The book chronicles events from August 1990 to June 1993.In addition, an epilogue was added in 1996.While it does not cover the most recent aftermath for the time it covers the book is excellent.
4-0 out of 5 stars A very good account of what happened in the Balkans
Misha Glenny's book offers a really good account of the forces which shaped the Balkan conflict. I have a much clearer idea now of the causes of the conflict, and of the various turning points and missed opportunities. This book seems very unbiased. The author seems apalled by the crimes that take place, but does not focus on attempting to list or catalog them. I do think that you will need another book to fully understand the high-level forces at work (US. UN, NATO, etc.) Perhaps Death of a Nation by Laura Silber (which I haven't read). Deliver Us From Evil, by William Shawcross does a really good job of explaining those things in the context of other events happening at the same time (Somalia, Rwanda, etc.). Also, Glenny's book is a bit dense, so it's not exactly an easy read

3-0 out of 5 stars Uninterestingly Interesting........
I find it Unintelligently interesting how the world are now masters at our own history, especially the English,

3-0 out of 5 stars Insightful reporting from a different perspective
Joe Sacco, Safe Area Gorazde: The War in Eastern Bosnia 1992-1995 (Fantagraphics, 2002)
5-0 out of 5 stars The genocide of Muslims by Christians in the 1990s
I just finished reading this brilliant work. I was in Eastern Europe in 1991-1993 and saw the refugees coming out of Bosnia. I followed the story as close as I could, even visting a refugee camp. But Sacco's illustrations put me on the ground in the supposed safe zones. The brutality of the supposedly Christian Serbs to Muslim Bosnians is so overwheliming it makes any beheadings in Iraq look like a birthday party in comparison.

5-0 out of 5 stars A chilling first-person narrative
Metod Milac's account of the dark days before WWII, the rise of fascism, Nazi rule, and communist domination is a chilling perspective of his experiences as a young Slovenian student caught in the vice of political forces that viewed him - and many others - as expendable parts in their quest for world domination. Metod's graphic depictions of life in a succession of forced labor camps and ghettos, of escape, betrayal, and recapture are interlaced with stories of compassion and heroism that paint a vivid panorama of the turmoil, despair, and hope that swallowed the Kingdom of Jugoslavia in the thirties and forties. The narrative is compelling. I was impressed with the detail and research Metod included in this impressive work.Given his advanced degrees, this is to be expected - yet the text is quite approachable. An impressive and important contribution to the library of anyone interested in a very specific insider view of the horrors that befell an ordinary man at an extraordinary time in history! G. Evan Brooks, Cincinnati Ohio

5-0 out of 5 stars A stark reminder, gently given
The holocaust in Europe during the years of World War II, from approximately 1939 to approximately 1945, resulted in the deaths of approximately 50 million people, most of them civilians. Some of this is approximate because the killings began earlier and continued after these dates, with many of the names and places forgotten. That this tragedy befell millions of Jews is well known, that political prisoners of the Nazis were placed into concentration camps and left to starve is well known, and the "collateral damage" to civilians from bombs and bullets gone astray (or not) is mostly accepted. What seems to have been forgotten is that these were in fact people who had families, hopes, dreams, and aspirations, and that the affected peoples were of virtually all nationalities in Axis-occupied Europe. This memoir by Metod Milac, which describes how he survived WWII in Slovenia (then part of Yugoslavia), reminds us that the holocaust of WWII created civilian victims of fights that came to visit them during the night, uprooted them into horror, and left them to fend for themselves as best they could even after the fighters went home.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Unique Perspective on What Was Lost
Simply beautiful.Amidst the outpour of dry political/historical literature that attempted to explain and contextualize the breakup of Yugoslavia, Debeljak's essay represents a very unique perspective of Yugoslavia's brilliant popular culture as a symbol of the new energy, creativity, and initiative that had come to characterize the first truly Yugoslav generations: that young segment of society that, if not obstructed by politics and warmongering, could very well have led the peoples of this southwest Balkan state towards an era of a truly "cosmopolitan" national identity.Debeljak laments the creative, constructive and truly "Yugoslav" intellectual and cultural force that was supressed and destructed by the wars of the 90s.His work provides a unique perspective of a frequently overlooked aspect of Yugoslav identity which many today claim never existed. The emotional force of the writing of this X-Yugoslav additionally proves that it did.

1-0 out of 5 stars Should be rated with no stars
Ah how biased is this book! I wonder how somebody can right this and claim it to be true.....Croatia was arming for war much before Milosevic came to power.Tudjman was a real war monger and a real Radical nationalist. He aimed to clean Croatia of Serbs (like Pavelic started in W.W.II)and he managed to do it in 1995, with Clinton's help.
1-0 out of 5 stars tedious and one-sided finger-pointing
After reading this essay, I was impressed by how little impression it made on me.Other than this: it is written by a very self-absorbed poet/philosopher who laments the collapse of Yugoslavia, but only offers one-sided blame towards the Serb republic. This made for a very tedious read, as not a single high-flown metaphor of Debeljak's is directed towards any Slovenian politician who might have played a role in the disaster. In fact, while gnashing his teeth over the Yugoslavia that was taken away from his generation, Debeljak then talks about his pride in defending his Slovenian homeland from the Serb "aggressors".Was the Yugoslavian National Army not in fact trying to keep Yugoslavia whole? It's contradictions like this that make for a very weak essay.Read more
