Great book
I think this ia a great book for those who want to learn a quick history of William wallace, as well as a guid to memorials in Scotland.For those who are planning a trip to Scotland, and also are intrested in the story of William Wallace I recomend this book.I also recomend trying to find it at a local bookstor instead because I bought mine for $14.99 brand new.

I ordered this book from Amazon,the book started out a bit slow but I was soon to find myself not being able to put it down.I think anyone who reads it will find what a well put together book this is,a must read!

bagpipes and dreams

Women's Book Groups Would Love This Book
This biography is, as the title implies, a romantic story.Fanny Stevenson 's drive for life took her from a comfortable Midwestern family life to Gold Rush San Francisco to Impressionist Paris to the South Pacific, with three colorful men, the most famous of whom was Robert Louis Stevenson.She was maligned for her fierce adventurousness in her own era;Alexandra LaPierre resurrects her story with admiration, and tells it well.

Fanny Stevenson was a strong woman but deeply affected by the attitudes of her day.What a strength she had though.Love this book, any woman would appreicate her story, very well written.

Debunking the myths
The subject of Clans, heraldry and tartans in Scotland is massive and complex.The authors, apart from having been Secretary and Deputy Secretary of the Standing Council of Scottish Chiefs are also Procurator Fiscal at the Court of the Lord Lyon and Chair of the Heraldry Society of Scotland.They are in an excellent position to speak on these subjects, what the book has not got is a list correcting the urban myths which have grown up about these subjects, and so allows people to think that it is incomplete or wrong.For example, one review has said that the Campbell tartan show is wrong and that clansmen should wear another.There is no right or ban on wearing any tartan, and Lady Saltoun, Chief of the Clan Fraser, points out that there are many Fraser tartans, some of which she has never even seen in use.The same is true of the Campbells.
Skewed point of view
Heraldry was introduced to Scotland in the 12th century with the advent of 1000 Anglo-Norman adventurers.The descriptions of coats of arms are derived from middle French. Some may have wondered about the number of French and English mottos and the paucity of Gaelic ones at a time when most of Scotland was Gaelic-speaking. A good resource, but not great!
I have read more than one review of this book which refer to it as a "bible" but, sadly, this is not the case.The second reviewer from Annapolis, MD is closer to the mark, stating that it is a good companion book.Read more

A myopic view of highland history.
If you're interested in reading a narrow view of highland history from the persepctive of a free church islander, this is the book for you. Sheepish and at times embarrassed to express real emotion, this author attempts to write a braod history of the highlands despite possessing no real persepctive or experince outside his native Lewis.
Not worth the price!
The Gaelic songs printed at the beginning of the chapters are the best feature of the book. One of the few ways to learn about the Highlands of Scotland is through the Gaelic songs and poems of its people.
Islanders - A History of the Northern Hebrides
The author does give a good background on the Highlands in general in the early part of the book, but his focus is really on Lewis/Harris for the most part.This is a very personal popular history.There are good points and bad in that.The reader gets in-depth information about some cultural/local things that are probably not covered as well anywhere else (ie the Presbyterian factions vying for control of the souls of Northern Islanders).If these kinds of things do not stir you, you may be a little disappointed.I found some of this interesting.I was particularly moved by the story of the wreck of the Iolaire.I don't suppose it is a story that one would run across anywhere else.Read more
