2-0 out of 5 stars scotland, A Concise History
This is a quite readable work of political history for a general public and with a highland focus.A short book with lots of nice pictures, little analysis, no context provided for the political history, and no footnotes.Concentrates on fifteenth to seventeenth centuries.

5-0 out of 5 stars Just terrific!!!
This book has it all-- organized and effective writing, a genealogy of Scottish kings in the front of the book (instead of hidden at the back as it is in many books), a detailed reference map of Scotland, and wonderful and unusual illustrations, many of them what I call "primary". These illustrations show Scotland's historic figures, its bloody battles, and the politics and religion. We also see examples of Scotland's creative and intellectual efforts throughout the centuries.5-0 out of 5 stars The truth is out there!
A facinating account of the history of our great nation. Having been educated in England, I found that British history in schools is really English history. This book is an opportunity to see a large part of British history from a very different perspective. The accounts of the conflicts between rival families for the Scots crown are as riveting as any novel. This seems to be an accurate account without too much flannel or personal opinion. If you want one book on Scottish history then buy this! Colin............... ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Knowledge Seeker.
This book is defenitively a source of very valuable information to those who love and collect swords. The history that builds its context is profound and helps one understands how a sword was a man's gardian angel that his real life depended on. The highly illustrated secton of this book shows pictures that hearted craftsmen personalized the sword for its owner. One who reads this book gets transported back in time and imagines how people earned their living with the prestigeous art of making the sword. I feel that I have gained another jewel to my loving collection of books.

5-0 out of 5 stars Names, locations, and lifespans of sword makers
Compiled by Richard H. Bezdek, Swords And Sword Makers Of England And Scotland is a superbly organized, specialized, authoritative, 394-page reference that consists primarily of a list of the names, locations, and lifespans of sword makers of England and Scotland in the 1600's through the 1800's. A section of black-and-white photographs of centuries-old swords enhances this unique and outstanding resource. Swords And Sword Makers Of England And Scotland is especially commended to the attention of scholars and historians, as well as dedicated weapon collectors and hobbyists. ... Read more

Editorial Review

Scotland had long been a de facto colony of England by the time the Act of Union between the two countries was signed in 1707. Even so, writes historianT.M. Devine, it was a colony that proudly refused to consider itself anything other than a separate nation, one that bound itself to historical fact and invented traditions alike in an effort to retain national identity. Scotland, Devine writes, fell to England for many reasons, not least of them its small and scattered population. Keenly aware of its status as a subject nation, Scotland still contributed greatly, and disproportionately, to the development of the British Empire--not only by sending its Highland regiments off to battle in distant lands and its people to colonize large parts of the world, but also by committing itself to industrial and technological development, a contribution that created great commercial fortunes in Edinburgh and London alike.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars mmmm....
Well, this review might be crap compared to the others, but I do have a few useful things to say about this book.5-0 out of 5 stars The road to home rule
This is an excellent account of the long and troubled road for Scotland under the rule of Great Britain.Beginning with the Union of 1707, which Scotland pretty much got railroaded into, Devine charts the meandering path toward Home Rule in 1999.Along the way he touches on the cornerstone events which shaped modern day Scotland such as the Crofters' War, the Highland Clearances, the Scottish Enlightenment and Industrial Revolution. It is amazing to read just how vital the Scots were in the expansion of the British empire, yet Scotland remained subordinate to England throughout this period.5-0 out of 5 stars Re-emergence
In 1999, Scotland experienced a momentous event, when after several centuries, a Scottish Parliament was convened in Edinburgh. Scotland is thus in a unique position at the beginning of the twenty-first century to enter a new era of self-determination and national pride such as has not been seen since 1707 (the year of the last Scottish Parliament) or since the times of the Stuart reign.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Interesting book for obtaining a background in Saint Margaret's life and times
Having read another reviewer's dismissive opinion of this book, I was prepared to be underwhelmed. Therefore, I was pleasantly surprised by this book, although my previous understanding was admittedly based on pamphlets and short hagiographic summaries.
2-0 out of 5 stars Proliferation of the Margaret Myth
This book was first published in 1993, in time for the 900th anniversary celebrations of Margaret's death.Herein lies one of the major problems with this book as it accepts the official line of the organisers of the anniversary celebrations and does not seek to question some of the more mythical aspects of Margaret's life. Haggis is the legendary national dish of Scotland. It is, when well-made, surprisingly delicious. We served an excellent one to friends from Nova Scotia that we bought in Scotland, and our guests were delighted by its spicy richness.5-0 out of 5 stars what a breath of fresh air!!

5-0 out of 5 stars An enthralling piece of historical biography
This well-written book documents the life of James Graham, Marquess of Montrose, in the 1600's. It is indeed a page-turner: the crisp writing is full of factual references but never burdened by them, like the photos, period paintings and documents illustrating the book, they enhance and support the narrative. It is free of ornamental flourishes or fawning, relying only on exposition of facts and quality writing.Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Sweet overview of Saint Margaret's life
As an alleged descendant of Saint Margaret, I was pleased by this book by Ms. Byrne. While the style is relatively simple and unmistakably hagiographic (what else, with a true saint), I was pleased to find in this book a large segment of the contemporary biography Saint Margaret's daughter commissioned at the hand of Saint Margaret's confessor.
