5-0 out of 5 stars A pick for any interested in Scottish history and culture
WILLIAM WALLACE: THE TRUE STORY OF BRAVEHEART is a pick for any interested in Scottish history and culture, who should consider it of ongoing interest, offering a new biography based on new research of medieval records. Wallace came to fame through his active opposition to English imperialism: a fight he was willing to die for. He achieved command but was unable to retain it in battle: with little experience in government or war he nonetheless made a name for himself in both areas. Lesser known is the fact that he was a member of the nobility himself: researcher Brown offers new insights on William Wallace's experiences and dispels many myths.

4-0 out of 5 stars Perfect appetizer for a Highland visit
One of the things I love about traveling is getting a good sense of the history of a place I'm visiting.I bought "Flight of Bonnie Prince Charlie" in anticipation of a trip to Scotland, and it was perfect for that purpose. Although it provides an excellent history, it seems designed for the visitor; it's equal parts travel and history. 5-0 out of 5 stars All the information you need, in an attractive package
The authors manage to tell the story of Prince Charles Edward Stuart's flight from the disaster that was the Battle of Culloden in vivid detail without including so much detail as to become tedious.Coupled with the inclusion of wonderful photography and maps, this book leaves the reader with a full grasp of what the pleasant Prince and his various protectors, guides and benefactors went through during his five months as a fugitive in the Scottish countryside.Read more

2-0 out of 5 stars There are much better titles
I had recently read "How the Scots Invented the Modern World: The True Story of How Western Europe's Poorest Nation Created Our World & Everything in It" and since I have a fondness for Scotland and its people I purchased the current volume. The book is very short and the writing is a bit disjointed. While many Scottish Englightenment ideas are addressed in the book, the connection to the American founding fathers is not always direct. In such a short book, that lack of attention to the title is distracting. It is a however a quick read and not completely wihtout merit if you are not looking to devote yourself to a heavy tome.
5-0 out of 5 stars Short Intro To The Scottish Enlightenment/U.S. Connection
Robert W. Galvin is not the most eloquent writer, but his enthusiasm for his subject matter makes up for the excess use of passive voice in America's Founding Secret. The Scottish Enlightenment was a wonderful and exciting period in history and the Scots had a major influence on the Founding Fathers.Galvin enthusiastically and accurately relates this information in a series of short essays. This book would be a good choice to introduce a somewhat reluctant reader to this subject before exposing them to longer works such as Alexander Broadie's The Scottish Enlightenment: The Historical Age of the Historical Nation or Arthur Herman's How The Scots Invented The Modern World.America's Founding Secret is evidence that someone outside of academia can get a charge out of heavy intellectual exercise. If buying/owning/reading a SHORT book bothers you, avoid this book and track down a copy of one of the other books mentioned in this review. If you want a short introduction to the Scottish Enlightenment and its effects on the founding of the United States, I recommend this book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Avoid this book like the plague
This is the worst book I have ever read. The only enlightenment it brings is in its title. Its irrelevant illustrations, very large type, and slabs of UPPER-CASE text give the impression of a confused and average high school term-paper that has been specifically written for people who move their lips when they read. The book is a complete waste of money; and I found myself constantly checking the title page to reassure myself that it had not been "vanity published" by a some very rich business tycoon. The comments of David Litterick in his review of "The Mark of the Scots: Their Astonishing Contributions to History, Science, Democracy, Literature, and the Arts" are also strongly applicable to this appalling work -- and David Litterick has expressed himself far better than I could (and I would suggest you read his review). It would seem that Galvin, with his constant stress on the importance of American "big business", has tried to write a 21st century version of Hubbard's "A Message to Garcia". ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Solid history, attractively presented
The Osprey Campaign account of the two major battles of William Wallace's rebellion has a solid, authoritative feel to it.Pete Armstrong's text is not particularly elegant and would have benefited from stricter editing, but he more than makes up for this with a thorough knowledge of his subject and an infectious enthusiasm for it.
5-0 out of 5 stars Read this book instead of watching "Braveheart"!
I know that many people like the Hollywood movie "Braveheart" with Mel Gibson, and have "learnt history" from that inacurrate, fantasy film. But if you want the real story about William Wallace's war against Edward II, take your time and read this superb, new volume from Osprey, written by the respected historian David Nicolle. Here we're introduced to Wallace the armoured knight, leading his disciplined mailclad scottish pikemen, not the longhaired and kilt-dressed savage in head of his pictish hordes as inacurratly portrayed by Hollywood. Perhaps equally important for the victory at Stirling bridge was also Andrew Murray. So enjoy this fascinating peice of history, and laugh next time you watch "Braveheart"!

4-0 out of 5 stars A Good Summary of the Scottish Hero
Amateur historian Pete Armstrong provides a good summary of William Wallace's famous rebellion against English rule in Scotland during 1297-1298.The two principle battles of this rebellion were Stirling Bridge and Falkirk, the first a Scottish victory and the second an English victory.Overall, Armstrong provides both insight and detail of this epic phase of the Scottish struggle for independence from English domination.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Livingstone. One tough man.
This work, featuring many new and nuanced insights, is a wonderfully written story of a very determined missionary and explorer. As the author so ably describes, our modern knowledge of David Livingstone is heavily influenced by the fact that, in death, he has been made the icon for many causes. His legacy has been put to the service of, for instance, British imperial aspirations. But as the author recounts, Livingstone's complexity defies any neat categorization.5-0 out of 5 stars Livingstone is Alive and Relevant!

4-0 out of 5 stars How and Why did all those Scots get to North America?
Everyone has heard about the potato famines that drove the many Irish immigrants to North America, but what about their celtic sisters and brothers in Scotland? Was it the clearances or was it the disasterous battle at Culloden in 1745? Hunter's book looks not only at the myriad of issues that emptied the highlands, but also at how the Scotts got to North American and what happened to them when they got there.Hunter explains not only the economic factors in Scotland, but also the brutal conditions that many Scots endured during their passage to Canada and the United States. He looks at the political issues in Scotland, England, Canada and the United State. He examines how they survived and why what they did often depended on when and where they landed.Early emmigrants tended to have money whereas those coming later had next to nothing.Hunter tells you about the businesses that they started, the communities that they built and the leadership that they provide even today to new continent. A Dance Called America opens your eyes to a group of people rarely considered when examining the settlement of North America. While anyone interested in history will enjoy this book, those of Scottish descent will find it particularly interesting

4-0 out of 5 stars A book that I can't forget
Some books like some movies stay with you.I learned so much about what happened in Scotland from Hunter's very interesting accounts. This book has made the kind of impression that compells me to reread it and loan it to others. It's a keeper in my bookcase now for reference. Now I am in the process of visiting those places both in Scotland and in America where these displaced peoples were sent.

4-0 out of 5 stars An excellent book on the Scots coming to North America
James Hunter has written a great book on Scottish immigration to North America. He strikes a very good balance between Scottish events that determined why people emmigrated, and the different experiences of these gaelic pioneers.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Scotland's storied past
Neal Ascherson covers some of the same ground Edwin Muir did in Scottish Journeys, but brings these rambles up to date as he deals with the theme of devolution and the re-emergence of the Scottish nation. The chapters are more a series of reflections than a discourse on Scottish history.Ascherson moves back and forth in time, dealing with such subjects as the Stone of Destiny, which was finally returned to its ancestral home after many years in the Royal Palace, ostensibly to deny Scotland any right to royal ascension. But, its course proves to be a very interesting one.4-0 out of 5 stars Well-written but not for the novice
I picked up "Stone Voices" to learn a little about what it is to "be Scottish" in modern times from Ascherson, a long-time political journalist who focuses on Scottish issues.Read more
