4-0 out of 5 stars Too personal, too anti-Da-Vinci-Code
The title is misleading. It is the story of the Sinclair family that built the chapel and their castle from the darkest and dimmest origins of Sanctus Clarus to today. They were linked to the famous Templars and the armourers' guilds, groups, that followed them, many of them gypsies from Egypt. When the Templars came back to Europe they settled in many places but were particularly welcome in Rosslyn. The Rosslyn Sinclairs became the weapon providers of the Scottish crown and various factions. When the Templars were banned, it is highly probable that at least some of the ships transporting their treasures took refuge in Rosslyn. The chapel is built as a crossing and mixing of various influences. First the Templars influence and the clearly asserted desire to build a new Temple of Solomon with the two columns of Jachin and Boaz. Strangely enough in reverse order when compared with the original in Jerusalem : Boaz, the master, and Jachin, the pupil, the apprentice. Apart from this element many other elements are wrongly interpreted. The vault is a barrel vault, so romanesque, whereas the outside look is Gothic. The extremely carved decoration and tiling is not cistercian (Saint Bernard was for plain and only vegetal decoration) but directly romanesque, hence benedictine. What Andrew Sinclair says is problematic. Some elements are even unacceptable the way he presents them. He says there are seventy odd green men borrowed from nordic mythology. Wrong. Green men are Irish, hence Celtic, and they are always twinned with Sheela-na-gigs, female representations of fertility. Sinclair does not even speak of Sheela-na-gigs. So either they were all destroyed as lustful, or they were never there and then the green men are a continental Celtic representation widely recuperated by the Benedictines in their romanesque period and they are wuyvres , male reprsentations of the creative power of nature, of underground forces, and of the power of the Verb, the Word, hence a representation of the Druid, the one who knows, the master, recuperated into the Christian faith as the patriarch, the creative power of the Verb, the Word, of God's Word, hence of the creative power of God. I could multiply examples, and I should visit this chapel to really see what it is all about. A last remark. The final diatribe against those who invented 50 years ago (on the basis of a quite longer tradition) the connection of the Saint Clairs with the blood line of Jesus and Mary Magdalene is out of place in a serious book. The final paragraph against the Da Vinci Code in this diatribe is purely un-academic and hence absurd.

3-0 out of 5 stars A Marxist Interpretation of the Great Jewish Revolt
First let me state that this book is very well written, although at times the prose tends to be a bit "over the top".It was a good read, the the battle descriptions are excellent, although I don't agree with all of his interpretations of ancient battle. He has been heavily infuenced by Keegan, and the works of SLA Marshal, even though the latter has been discredited.

2-0 out of 5 stars More than you thought, less than expected
While Maggie Craig's book shows that women had more influence and participation in the '45 than you may have thought, her book itself delivers less than you should expect. Written from an entirely modern perspective, Craig takes the stance that these women of Scotland were the exception rather than the norm. She seems to believe that until her generation any woman who dared express an opinion or lobby for her political ideas was ruthlessly suppressed. Nothing could be further from the truth, as women of that time were very influential in political and social action, even if they didn't always do so from the frontlines. In failing to admit this Craig does her readers an injustice even greater than that which the English Parliament came up with to defraud the House of Stuart. Craig's book relies on stories and personal observations about a 'woman's place' that contrast strongly with what scholars of the era know.Scottish Clan hierarchy valued women and children as the future, and their position in the clan 'family' was respected and greatly acknowledged.True, English law at the time was very abusive of women's rights, but those ideas had not yet taken root north of the border, despite the Act of Union. Though it presents some interesting characters and events, I found this book unconvincing.
5-0 out of 5 stars Wonderful edition to Scottish Women's History
I found this book to be one of the great finds in recent years. Scottish women, be they common or noble, have always had a unique place in Scottish History. Unfortunately their story is often missing from the pages of Scottish history annals.Ms Criag has provided readers with a unique glimpse into the romantic period of the second Jacobite uprising from the women's point of view. The women were remarkably loyal to a man and cause doomed from the start. This is a must read if you want an historical approach that is scholarly in its content but entertaining in its delivery. This one should be in all Scottish historians' keeper shelves.

4-0 out of 5 stars Don't Mess with the Ladies...
This is a good book for the ladies of all of those kilt-wearing men who portray Jacobite soldiers in the '45 Rising.Extensive research is evident throughout.Women played a huge role in the Rising, from recruiting soldiers to gathering intelligence. This book explores the activities of some of the most fervent, yet overlooked, Jacobites: the women.Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars wonderful resource on The Bruce and James Douglas
Called "some of the most famous lines in Scottish Literature", they were written in 1386 by John Barbour, Archdeacon of Aberdeen. This was the Age of Chivalry - a time of knights and ladies, where bravery, valour and larger-than-life heroes came into flower.Above all, Loyalty was treasured, and none rivals the tale of loyalty between two men, who faced some of the hardest times in Scottish History and paid the price:Robert the Bruce, Earl of Carrick, and James Douglas.Even today James "Black" Douglas still thrills the imagination and heart of ladies fair!Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Rivalry explained
I really enjoyed this book.Being a newly active member of the Clan Donald, I had always seen references to the Macdonald/Campbell feud but never understood it or the history.Mr. Tomson tells the story from the beginnings with the events that led to the centuries old competition between these two great clans. Now it makes sense to me why people snicker at the Clan Donald and Campbell's tents being next to each other at the highland games or the little battles between them. The history of the Lords of the Isles and Earls of the Campbell family are easy to read and enjoyable. The second half of the book is just various stories of people of the name Campbell and Macdonald who ended up in rivalries or succeeded or failed in different endeavors.A fun easy read, yet very informative.Good book to have on the shelf for members of either clan.

2-0 out of 5 stars Move over Hatfields. The Campbells are Coming.
Oliver Thomson has done a fairly good job of telling the story of what is probably the greatest feud of all time.He does a very good job of explaining why tension developed between the two great families and why they took the sides they did in various wars. The story is a little shallow at times but for the most part he tells the story well. One of the things he handles best is explaining the split between the Stewarts and the Campbells who had been long time allies, often against the MacDonalds. For some reason he keeps saying the various clans were involved in ethnic cleansing.Scots were removing Scots to make room for sheep not killing off another ethnic group.Hitler was involved in ethnic cleansing, not the Scots.2-0 out of 5 stars Entertaining but Over Priced and Mistake Prone.
Thomson has produced an entertaining account of the Campbells and the
